I was loyal to Ludlow Blunt (formerly Tommy Guns) in Brooklyn, and Justin's skills vastly surpass their best barbers, even on their best days. Yes, his cuts take time. He cares about his craft and his attention to detail clearly reflects that commitment. You have to make an appointment, though. And, be prepared for a slight wait even when you make an appointment. Justin (and every barber who works with him) treat each client individually, and they will make sure you leave looking your best. Frankly, their prices are low considering the level of skill exhibited and the consistency of results. Additionally, the shop is a really cool space, and everyone in there (barbers and customers alike) are down-to-earth and easy to talk to. Far too often, with other barbers, I get home and find uneven patches around my head. Many of them just can't blend or cut evenly with scissors. It's become a huge challenge that requires me to fix it myself or return to the shop. This is why I've only been to a handful of people throughout my life, switching stylists only if they retire or move. Just as I hoped, Marshall showed his skill with scissors, clippers and any tool he used. He cut to the length I wanted while also making sure the form worked with the lay of my hair and shape of my head. I booked an appointment at the beginning of the week for a curly cut. When booking, there was only…read moreone option for the stylist followed by a quick survey that asked for pictures of my current hair and desired cut. I was sure to fill this out immediately. When I arrived to the salon (again, DAYS after booking the appt), I was asked to wait to meet my stylist. I was brought back to her chair where she asked me to describe what I'd like. She proceeded to say that she did not feel comfortable cutting my hair type. While I am grateful that she did not jump in while unsure, I did find it pretty upsetting that the stylist and the salon chose to handle this embarrassing situation in front of other clients rather than calling me beforehand or even speaking with me at the front of the salon. Likewise, I have a difficult time understanding the purpose of submitting pictures in advance (which the stylist stated she saw), but then waiting until after I have driven to the salon to discuss. J. Bauman was actually in the salon while this was happening and offered no reassurance or alternative. He sat on his phone in the front of the salon while the stylist told me how "awkward" the situation was. The best that they could provide was asking me to come in a different day (mind you this haircut was for my graduation the next day.) If you have textured, curly hair, I'd be extremely wary of booking with the curly cut stylist and this salon in general. I found that EDUCE down the road was a similar price point with a much more understanding and qualified staff.
