But malatang has been a growing trend in the city nowadays, perhaps increasingly outpacing hotpot, and Mala Project was really the first one to bring it to NY. I will say that I do enjoy a lot of the ingredients they have on selection for the dry pot. Favorites were the tofu puffs, the glass noodles, and the taro. The scallion pancake had a great, crispy texture but was very oily and lacked scallion flavor. The vegetable dumplings were bland and weren't enjoyable without some kind of sauce (we like them with chili oil). For mains we both got their house noodles. I felt the sauce was lacking and there were a lot of random bits and pieces of spices that I would chew on accidentally and it wouldn't taste good. Pricey, but ambiance was cozy and fun. Neon lights were a nice touch at this specific Mala Project location. Took a bit to get water but afterwards, our service was normal. So the first time I went to a Málà project location, I honestly wasn't a fan, but I have given it a couple more tries and now I love it! It really does matter what you order here. Skip the scallion pancake and dumplings. And DO order the cold chicken salad and the dry pot. The servers at this location were super helpful in recommending items from the menu! The dry pots are great if you know what combinations to make. But warning, the medium is VERY spicy. The spice builds over time, and any ingredient you order that soaks up the spicy oil will be very overwhelming. My recommendation is that if you want to order anything spicier than mild, stick to foods that are thicker and won't soak up as much oil. For example, the Chinese bacon, quail egg, fish filet, fish or beef balls all won't soak up too much of the spice. However, things like thinly sliced meat, lotus root, potato will soak up all the spicy oil and will quickly get overwhelming because the spice builds. If you order a mild bowl, the ingredient choice matters a little less because it's less spicy, but big warning if you order the medium or spicier!! My favorite ingredients are beef tongue, Chinese sausage, fish slices, chicken thigh, quail egg, lotus root, potato, Chinese cabbage. I usually will pick one or two proteins and two or three veggies to mix. Usually the pots are big enough to share and you can choose around 3-4 ingredients per person for a decent meal. read more

Okay, I've been to the one in the city years ago and I remember I said it will do if you're not able to trek it to Flushing, but you definitely don't get the same value as you do there. I was craving mala dry pot and saw they had a Brooklyn location, so I said why not and I want to say you definitely don't get much. This was like $30 dollars and only came with one to go container and one small rice. In Flushing the one in the New World Mall, would give you two rice containers and 2-3 containers of the mala pot for that price. Our dry pot came in a tray and that's when I realized this was an enormous portion. I've always been a fan of the Manhattan Mala Project locations, and I'm so excited there's one now in Brooklyn closer to me! Their signature dry pot is not for the faint of heart, so if you're not into spice this may not be the right place for you. The dry pots are most ideal when you have a larger group, so you can share the large bowl and order more ingredients. Some other favorites of ours from the menu are the Dan Dan Noodles (also spicy), the purple rice, and the Herbal Jelly dessert. But honestly, you should be going for the Dry pot. We love these in the dry pot: Pork Short Rib, Lamb, Pork Filled Beef Ball, Spam, Fish Fillet, Boy Choy, Chinese cabbage, Shiitake Mushroom, Firm Tofu, Konjac Noodle, Roe Filled Fish Ball. This new location is definitely an update from the East Village location that I'm used to, it's much more modern, punchy, and contemporary-it definitely feels more Brooklyn, but glad that they've maintained all the same flavors and spices. read more

We split one of the dry pot with bean sprouts, shrimp balls, bok choi, and pork belly as well as the duck salad. Got a side of rice for the dry pot. Overall, it was a tad on the salty side, but if you enjoy it with a drink or two it pairs wonderfully. The duck salad is more like duck with a bunch of microgreens, but i LOVE microgreens so I thought it was great. The dry pot came with more sauce than I'm used to and it was vinegar-based I think so on the tart side. Either way, it was good! I was a huge fan of the shrimp balls as well. The pork belly was okay, it was sliced pretty thinly so it isn't your typical pork belly I'd say. Tasted on the leaner side of meats in my opinion. read more
