I love the food here. The noodles are always cooked perfectly and the broth is so flavorful. I've only gotten take out but even then it's delicious. I always get a noodle soup but my friend always gets their tomato egg noodles and you can't go wrong with either. Their triangle noodles are the best for that amazing texture but they did stop making them. They also have side dishes like the cucumbers and the scallion pancakes that are pretty good. There's plenty of parking and the staff is friendly but it does take a while for them to prepare the food. The wait is long but the foods worth it. read more

If I want a soupy noodle it's either Malan noodle or beef noodle soup. If I want the dry then I get the brown sauce with pork. Dont forget to ask for chili oil! This place is so delicious. I used to eat here weekly when I worked over on that side of town. The ingredients are all fresh and the beef noodle soup has this fragrant aroma to it that I've never experienced at any other restaurant. It's consistent quality too. The broth has a deep, rich flavor. The owner/ manager is friendly and always greeted me when I came in. The atmosphere is calm and pleasant and parking is easy. I can't recommend this place enough. The Malan Noodles I've known and loved for so long is no more. I've been coming to Malan Noodles for almost 20 years. The freshly pulled triangle noodles were what always kept bringing be back. I remember when they were a cash only place and their soup was $6 a bowl. Over time, I've seen the restaurant slowly change, quality has wavered, and prices have gone up. When my friend and I went in yesterday, we were shocked to find out they no longer had triangle noodles on their menu-- one of the things that made this place so special and unique. After we ordered, we didn't hear the usual banging of dough or any sounds of noodles being pulled. When we got our food our worries we're confirmed-- they no longer make fresh noodles. The soup broth was the same but the noodles were not their usually chewy goodness. When we asked about what happened to them making fresh noodles we didn't get a straight answer. I hope that this is a temporary change but I don't think it is. This place is my favorite noodle spot, so it makes me sad that it's changed so much. If they never return to making noodles fresh to order, I will not be coming back. read more

Maybe I caught them on an off day, but the place was empty, the A/C wasn't on (or working) so it was crazy-hot inside, like in the nineties... food took quite a while to come out, and perhaps I ordered wrong, but it was really pretty mild and a bit bland. Now that i know they have never had real beef noodle soup before they had nothing to compare it to. The beef noodle soup tasted like tap water. The clear broth shows that it was not cooked for very long and the beef in it was tough, dry and flavorless. 0/10. The sides the pig ears was 5/10.. the firm tofu was 2/10. I've had beef noodle soup at many places and by far this is the worse for the broth. The noodles were okay a 5/10. I spent $90.00 on this meal and I feel robbed. I got the tomato and egg with medium round noodles The eggs are scrambled with chunks of red tomatoes in a light tomato base sauce. Been coming here for years since I was a child. This place has always been a family favorite. Since restaurants reopened with social distancing in mind, the restaurant does not offer indoor seating as of now, but have signs to keep 6 feet distance and masks are required upon entry of the restaurant. They have all the safety protocols posted and provided (sanitizers at the entrance and order tables) - patrons are asked to wait outside for their orders. Onto the noodz. Hand pulled noodles - and depending on the noodle dish you order, you can select the style of your noodles. I personally like the Pork Chow Mein with medium flat noodles (wide). Because the noodles are made in house and made to order, the texture of the noodles is just unbeatable. I tend to like my food more on the spicy side, so I always ask them to make my chow mein dish spicy by adding extra jalapenos. They add this into the cooking process so the jalapenos do come stir fried and not raw and I add their chili oil into the mix as well. My family tends to like to order their beef noodle soup too which is another good option to try. Came here on a Sunday afternoon & it was empty. Service was super fast and they were very attentive to us. We just came for a snack and ordered their house special (aka Malan noodle) with the large flat hand pulled noodle. The broth tasted very clean and flavorful. You can tell that they cooked the soup for a long time. The noodles are perfectly chewy and they give a generous portion of noodle. Although a filling dish, you won't feel super bloated/ heavy after eating because it is such a clean broth. They also give a side of their homemade chili oil that is a great addition to the soup if you like something a little bit spicy. I will definitely be coming back to this place. If you love chewy hand pulled noodles this place is for you! To this day, I have not found hand pulled noodles as special as this place. You can see the chef kneading, rolling, and pulling the dough in the back so you KNOW the hand pulled noodles are legit. The noodles taste fantastic and are just super chewy. I loved this place as a kid and the friends I've brought now love it too. Their Malan Beef noodle is their staple and I love the soup. It feels super homey and clean to drink. It is a bit on the lighter flavor so those who really like flavorful soup might not want this one -- get the Braised Beef noodle soup instead! As for picking noodle size - I like the medium flat over round. I just feel like there's more to eat and more flavor in a bite. If you're looking for something unique - try the large flat! Wouldn't say it's the most enjoyable to eat but it's an experience eating such a large noodle. For appetizers - their garlic cucumber is crunchy and refreshing. The thickest hand pull noodles you'll ever eat. I've recently been obsessed with hand pull noodles, so I'm glad my friend recommended this childhood favorite of his. We got the Brown Sauce and Pork with large flat noodles and the Malan Beef Chow Mein with medium flat noodles. I wanted to get large flat noodles for both, but the waiter said some dishes can't come with large flat because they'll break. I was surprised by how thick the large flat noodles were! I'm definitely glad we got the medium flat noodles because the large flat noodles were kind of hard to eat. Nonetheless, both dishes were very light and not oily, which I appreciated. I wish the brown sauce and pork was a little saltier, but that's just my western palate. I definitely preferred the Malan beef chow mein and the medium cut noodles if I had to choose one. Summary: 5 stars for chewy noodles, tender beef shank, comforting broth - the only order I have made for the past 15 years; fair price *** I have been eating here since before I had a Yelp account. Today I ate some to-go and my first thought was, "holy **** these noodles are Q". This is just as good as I remember as a kid. 1 Large noodle and soup is $10 when it used to be $8 10-15 years ago. That's nothing to raise a pitchfork over, in my opinion. I'm not really sure what cuisine the noodle soups are. Maybe a form of langzhou beef noodle, but I don't think it comes spicy. The light broth does seem to have an msg-enhanced flavor, but it doesn't leave me thirsty. However, there was a period of time when the broth was WAY TOO SALTY and our family would dump hot water into the bowl to dilute it. I like the uniformly chopped pieces of green onion and cilantro (stems included). As for the beef shank, today's was particularly tender with some striping of cartilage. Yum!!! Other days, it may be a little tougher. Some days you will also get a bounty of meat, other days they're on the stingy side. But I think those inconsistencies are fairly normal compared to all other restaurants serving a form of beef noodle soup. However, the one thing that I have always desired is 3x more thinly sliced white daikon radish. You can usually find 3-4 pieces per order. Today, my sister stole all of it and left me none.... And now onto the main event: HAND PULLED NOODLES! I have tried a variety of sizes and shapes over the years. Note that some may no longer be available. - Large flat. Big noodle belts! My favorite because it is the sturdiest and chewist of the bunch. Can be the messiest and slap you around the face if you're in a rush to eat. - Medium flat. Was meh for me, I didn't find it as chewy. - Large round. Eyeballing it as 2.5-3 mm in diameter. Extremely chewy. I would get this if I was too lazy to chomp through large flat. - Small triangle. A noodle house so close to where I live I was surprised that I haven't noticed it. Not just any noodle house. Hand pulled noodles! I was recommended by Ben L. and company to come here for dinner. When I did I was a bit taken back that there was no one there except the company I was meeting that night. I was told that Malan is typically busy in the afternoons. I was also assured that the quality of the noodles are awesome. And they were! Unfortunately I was not attentive enough to photograph the dishes except one. And I was really having an engaging conversation to remember the names fully of the dishes. We had an appetizer of cold noodles and tofu with some kind of peanut sauce which was tasty. Then came the signature Beef Stew with triangle noodles( I think), Chicken Chow Mein with Round noodles, and green onion pancakes! The broth in the Beef Stew was mild but very flavorful. Noodles were al dente! Definitely comfort food for me! Chicken Chow Mein was delicious and the noodles definitely soaked up the sauce! Green onion pancakes were crispy and tasty! And very filling! Many restaurants in LA have dropped or changed due to the trend that people care more about the decoration of the place rather than the taste itself. Malan did not disappoint. The food itself was made to order clear beef noodle soup, just tasted like how it was when I used to work nearby decades ago. Clear beef soup with just some cilantros and turnips. Noodle you can pick the size you want and the chef will make it for you. What a great hidden gem! I've been to this plaza countless times, but never really thought to go in to this restaurant. They are known for their handmade noodles in all different sizes and shapes, 7 in total! I'm a huge noodle lover so this made the decision making quite difficult. I went with the Malan Beef Soup Noodles with Medium Flat Noodles. The broth is clear and very flavorful. The noodles have a great bite to it, I even saw the guy making our noodles in the back. The beef slices are tender and they give a lot of both! We also got the House Special Beef cold dish to share. Nothing too special about it, but it was good as well. It's actually quite pricey at $11.99 so I don't think I can come back too often, although the portion is quite large. Custom hand pulled noodled made to order exactly the way you want it. There's a lot of choices but I always get the triangle type. I mean where else can you get it like that? The guy works the dough and makes his magic on what you order. So the noodle part is only partially what makes this place great. The soup base, flavors that tie into a clear broth for beef noddles just tops it off with their custom hot sauce oil. They sell it on the side too if you want to take it home. Overall I find myself coming regularly, not sure what the addiction is, but it's not bad at all. Probably best if you consider this a entry level fast food place. Still my favorite hand pull noodles in town. They have now the new option of soysauce version of the beef noodle soup but I didn't try as I have been craving for their original, clear beef noodle soup. The beef that came with the noodles on this trip was very tender, which was the only weakness I think they had in my previous visits (that previously the beef was more harder and dry). I got third to the thinnest size noodles and it was nice and chewy. I love the fact that I can customize my bowl with extra diced up green onions and cilantrols (pile high) to really infuse the soup with even more spices. Will be back again and again. read more
