Curry Lhaksa - the takeout version is enough to feed two! 2. Roti Tellure - which is basically Roti Kanhai with egg 3. I struggled to write this review- being that I lived in Malaysia for 15 years I felt that I would be way too hard on them. The truth is, my three star review is not just about their food. I'm in fact, rating them a three star mainly because of the unfriendly staff - particularly the male waiter who acts like he really hates his customers. This does not represent the spirit of Malaysia. Malaysia is a country that has three major races -the Malay the Chinese and the Indian. The food should represent the amalgamation of all three cultures. Because in Malaysia, it does. The restaurant offers food that is mainly Chinese. Not bad, but it is not authentic. It would've been nicer if the people also represent the spirit of Malaysia; which is "service with a smile." It would've at least made up for the lack of spices in their authentic claim. read more

I have been coming to Malaya Kitchen for nine years now, and even after all that time I can still say that this is one of the best restaurants in Charlotte. The reason for this is consistency; every item that I have ordered here has been amazing. Even Sesame Chicken, the most basic asian dish, tastes different from any other. Allow me to explain. Simply put, everything they serve at Malaya is amazing. I have visited this restaurant about fifteen times in 2018 alone. I cannot imagine the overall number of visits made throughout the last nine years. The food is ready and served within ten minutes of ordering, every time. That may be a concern, as that is quicker than McDonalds, but the quality never falters. The interior decor and ambience could be better, but food should be the only reason why anyone would want to eat out. Pricing is relatively moderate during dinner time, but I would recommend coming here from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during their Lunch Special period. During these hours, most items on the menu are priced around $8, which includes a menu item with your choice of white or brown rice and a house salad with an amazing ginger dressing. I have tried every item on the main menu, and I can say that you cannot go wrong with whatever choice you make. As always, there are some dishes that are better than others. My personal favorite is the Mongolian Beef served with white rice. The Mongolian Beef is prepared very tender, with a hint of sugar. This makes the beef also a bit crispy, which paired with the tender beef is such a delight. Overall, the taste of Mongolian Beef is the perfect blend of sweet and savory that draws me to order it every time. My second favorite dish is the Beef Rendang, with is a curry dish with an excellent sauce. Just have toothpicks handy. Among the desert options, I would go with the fried ice cream. It consists of a big ball of vanilla bean ice cream surrounded by a crispy brown crust that makes an excellent pairing. It also costs around $5.25, so you must really want dessert to pay up. As you can see, I would highly recommend Malaya Kitchen. It just amazes me how consistent a restaurant can be with the amount of dishes that they serve. Even so, having been a regular for nine years and seeing how amazing it has been every time, it truly is amazing. I went to the restaurant with my family and ordered 2 appetizers and 3 entrees; 2 of the entrees (chili chicken and pad Thai) tasted horrible - I have had the dishes here before, but today it was horrible. I informed the server about this - The staff was curt and just took it off the table and offered no explanation. Now, here comes the fun part - when I received the check, both the entrees were in the check. I just did not want to argue with the lousy staff - just paid and left, never to come back again. The mango chicken dish that I have always loved here was not on the menu. I was bummed. Thankfully, when I asked if they could still offer it, the server told me YES! The main dish was preceded by an iceberg lettuce salad with ginger dressing that tasted very strange. I couldn't eat it and I normally love ginger dressing on anything. I don't know what happened here. The mango chicken was good, but came with steamed broccoli on the plate that was not even luke warm. I will give them a pass on this because I really enjoyed the mango chicken. I didn't remember the mango sauce being as thick and sweet, but what's not to love about thick and sweet? The iced tea didn't taste as fresh as it should have and there was no Sweet and Low, my preferred sweetener. The service was good. The atmosphere was perfect for conversation with my friend, Sam. Update - Quarantine time 2020 - still good and added the Pad Himmgpan and the SIngapore Rice Noodles to the regular. Previous Review - Some of the reviewers have hit the nail on the head with this one. The high quality (taste and prep) and the consistency are what sets this restaurant apart from all its brethren in the Asian restaurant business in Charlotte. I have been partaking of Malaya Kitchen for almost five years (about 15-20 times per year, according to credit card records) and there's a reason I keep coming back. Our personal favorites (we tend towards spicy and flavorful, but not burn-the-house-down spicy) are the Cilantro Chicken, Shredded Eggplant, Curry Laksa and the House Special Fried Rice. Oh, Malaya Kitchen. How in the world have I passed by your doors for so long after dwelling, eating and shopping in and around the Arboretum for so long? Made it in after finding another restaurant was closed on a Sunday afternoon. Boy, oh boy, am I glad they were closed! These guys are on my culinary map for good. A quaint, low-lit dining room with a few tables, bench/booth-ish seats and a full bar. We made it in around 1:30pm and were seated immediately. For you soda drinkers, know that if you order a coke, you'll get a 12oz can with a cup of ice. Kind of a bummer, but I guess it's better that limit the intake to one per meal. We started out with the Roti Telur. "Pancake" style app with egg, onions and peppers served with an incredible curry dipping sauce. There are a few potatoes in the curry sauce. Like little starch boats floating in a delicious stream of Malaysian happiness. That good. Each bite was perfect as it was drenched with the curry sauce and a little added sriracha. I saved the curry sauce for the rest of the meal! My wife had the Stir Fried Okra and Belacan Sauce. Served with white or brown rice. The sauce was spicy and smoky. It had a hint of fruitiness. Kind of difficult to pinpoint but each bite was intriguing. The veggies were aplenty among the rice and sauce. I ordered the Char Kway Teow. Malaysian pan fried noodles with red onions and bean sprouts. I ordered it with chicken. WHOA. Smoky, tender noodles with so much chicken in each bite, I'd thought there wouldn't be any left for anyone else to order! I added the remaining curry sauce to my entire plate and couldn't have been happier. Whoever discovered this flavor profile deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. I cleaned my plate. Our server was so helpful and described each dish and how it was made. Very nice and so happy! The prices are very, very fair for lunch. We ate for just over $20. Can't go wrong in that department. It's cozy and comfortable and the servers are so helpful. You can tell they love explaining their dishes to newbies. My hubby and I had the Malay Roll - it's seasoned ground chicken rolled up in tofu skin and deep fried - it's served with a sweet-chili sauce and it was delicious. It reminds me of a Chinese-Filipino dish, called Kikiam, I grew up with and it brought back some really nice memories. We also had the Hainan Chicken - it's poached chicken served at room temperature with the most amazing rice! And last but not least, we had the Char Kway Teow - pan fried noodles - oh my - so good. Can't wait to go back! And their hours fit folks who tend to eat late - they close at 11:00 PM Mondays -Thursdays, at 12:00 Midnight on Fridays and 10:00 PM on Sundays. read more

I agree... Not just the Arboretum, but Ballantyne area in general needed a more authentic Asian restaurant, rather than the fluffy "chain" type spots. This place is the "sister" restaurant to Cuisine Malaya in downtown near CPCC. So the menu is VERY similar, minus the sushi. Honestly, I heard the sushi is VERY good there, but I have only tried it once (and it was good). I cannot keep from ordering teh main dishes- and these are almost all the same at Malaya Kitchen, as Cuisine Malaya. Great food and service. So happy to be able to get their good Malasian food close to home!! Try the Char Kway Teow (like Chow Fun), one of my favorites. Oh, and the crispy or Curry duck!! read more

OMG! We live in the Steele Creek area so we stumbled upon this place on accident while hungry and in the area for another reason. I will definitely say this, I will drive the 14 miles to eat there any time. The noodle soup that I ate made me weak in the knees, it was THAT good. Also, usually when you tell a restaurant you would like it EXTRA spicy, they wimp out and bring you something vaguely resembling spicy, but not this place. We said make it super spicy and the waitress said, "how about medium?" She talked us into going medium and bringing more chili sauce in case it wasn't hot enough. Thankfully we listened. Medium is PERFECT, and by that I mean very spicy! We loved it! Amazingly wonderful food, exceptionally friendly and attentive wait staff and seriously very reasonable prices. If I'd have taken a breath between all the curry slurping and pepper scarfing, I might have thought to ask. Guess what I found in my bowl of curry noodles? Daun salam. A bay leaf relative - but more anisey, bitier, different. An awesome, strange nuance I always stick in my curry laksa but not to be found at our only other Malaysian joint. Made my little day, seeing that leaf, all scenting my curry with odd, tasty flava. Roti was good, if standard. Hainanese rice on the burner here, but veggies beware - chicken stock abounds. Service was comfy and attendant. If I lived closer, I'd be here regularly, but even leaves of Salam won't get my belly to agree to a 30 minute drive when the craving for curry hits...alas. read more

I've been here several times for dining in and take out. The food is absolutely delicious. I've had the Pad Thai, Sesame Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Spring Rolls and the Vegetable Samosas. Each time I've gone with different people and everyone was pleased with the food. The only reason I'm not giving this establishment five stars is because they need to work on the cleanliness of the restaurant. Also, the seat in the booth is not attached so it's easy to fall off. Disappointing Malaysian food. The roti canai lacked in flavor. The curry laksa was bland to say the least. Even the nasi goreng couldn't save the day. What with all that ketchup (?) it was doused in! I so wanted to like this place, being a big fan of Malaysian cuisine. I will probably give it another shot because lots of other things on the menu looked promising and the family running it though understaffed did their best to accommodate all our requests. The Service: Friendly and prompt. Awesome job. The Setting: Looks like a fast food place with a bar and Asian-ish touch. It has TV and clean restrooms. The Food we ate: -Love how the salad was crispy fresh...but the salad dressing ruined it...ick. -The calamari looked different (like puffballs), but they actually tasted better than I expected. The sauce that came with it complemented it. -The summer roll and its sauce was ok...not that good, but not that bad either. -My teriyaki chicken was a bit a bit dry with very little sauce on it. If they added a bit more sauce, it would've been perfect. It still tastes good though. The veggies that came with it was perfect. -My hubby's basil beef tasted like a regular stir fry. So good! Everything was so fresh! Often the problem I have with eating out is the veg. If it's overcooked or the flavorless I'm sad. I had the chili chicken. it's spicy! And I love spicy food. I'm usually disappointed in the heat but this was perfect! And like good asian chili spice the flavor keeps building with each bite. I don't think I've ever had green beans as the main vegetable but I'm definitely going to be rethinking that! It was so good. My hubs had the teriyaki chicken and he only reason I'm knocking this to 4 instead of 5 was his chicken breast was a little bit dry. He ate most of his vegetables and had to share a mushroom with me it was popping with tenderness and flavor. We will definitely be back! read more

One of our favorite authentic asian places to go in Charlotte that has a nice and clean ambiance and a variety of dishes on the menu. The starter soups are the only non authentic thing that we have found, but the Taiwanese beef noodle soup seems like it was magically transported over from the streets of Taiwan and onto your table. If you're going to order it, I would recommend getting the salty veggies on the side so it doesn't get too salty. The curries are also amazing and I would highly recommend getting a side of roti to eat with it. It goes without saying that the service here is amazing. The servers are all very pleasant and attentive and your food usually is at your table in less than 10 minutes. You won't be disappointed! read more

Just moved to Charlotte last month. I was so excited when I found there is Malaysian restaurant in Charlotte area. Whenever I go to Malaysian restaurant, I always order Char Kuey Teow. It's a popular noodle dish in Malaysia. When I lived in Raleigh, I have been so disappointed because good restaurants in Triangle area that offered that noodle dish were closed (Fortune Palace, Penang, & Merlion). With a great expectation, I decided to make a trip to Malaya Kitchen for lunch last week. The restaurant is located in the busy shopping center. Kind of remind me with Cameron Village in Raleigh. The waitress was very nice & polite. I ordered Char Kuey Teow, & I was so disappointed. It was just Ok. The authentic Char Kuey Teow usually comes with shrimp, squid, sliced of Chinese sausage, fish cake, chives, & bean sprouts. Mine only came with beef, bean sprouts, & scallions. There was no taste belachan in that dish, which is the key ingredient in Char Kuey Teow. Sighhhh.... I guess I have to make a trip to Atlanta if I want to enjoy delicious Char Kuey Teow. The service was good though. I give them a second chance, so I will come back to try other dishes next time. read more

Worst food is an understatement... I have eaten here a couple of times in the past - it was never great but a meh type of place where you can do a take-out when you are lazy to go anywhere else... But last night the food was horrible.. I would not even eat it if it were free food... Roti Kanai was horrible .. the roti was hard as a rock and the curry was so like yellow liquid... same thing with Roti Telur.. they didn't even fry it well... you can taste the rawness.. the pot-stickers were not steamed right - you could not only taste but see the raw dough !!! Beef Rendang - that came as a nightmare.. so spice.. no flavor.. as if somebody made it and poured a glass of water on top it !!! I am so disappointed with the food ...this was my last time there.. I should have guessed that this place has gone downhill when I went to pick up dinner on a Friday night and there were just 2 people in the bar and none sitting and dining !!!
