Quality and portion size did not match the price. Vegetable rice was dark brown and tasted of beef. Sweet and sour pork was majority breading. Chinese food is no longer affordable at most locations. To be honest, I am not sure how long Chen-Fu has been open, but I found it tonight on Yelp and saw they delivered through Grubhub. And, as we are all quarantined and trying to support local, I decided I would give them a try. As some of you may know I am a Crab Rangoon lover, so of course that had to be ordered. So, with that said I placed an order for crab rangoon and the triple delight, chicken, shrimp and beef with mixed vegetables and steamed rice. Through Grubhub I received my order in less than 45 minutes and everything was still hot. The Crab Rangoon was crispy and filled perfectly. The sauce is was good, but a little sweet for my liking. New to the area so I'm try out different food spots. During Covid 19 they are adding $1 to all entree menu options. They offer takeout and delivery. The accept cash and card (with a fee attached to the card orders). Service was quick for a walk in order. The crab Ragoon is delicious fresh. The egg roll was okay it's a mixture of pork and shrimp . The only things I did not like was I had more vegetables than shrimp and the shrimp were extremely small compared to other places I've tried here and for $1 extra I definitely had expectations. VERY Disappointing Chinese Food I was in town for a visit and decided to get lunch here, the service was great so that's what my one star goes to. I got the egg drop soup which was palatable but the crisp that come along with it were over done and very dark in color. I also got steamed pork dumplings, the dumpling was very thick and under cooked and the pork had no flavor. I also got shrimp egg rolls which if you still decide to eat here after reading the bad reviews please do not get the shrimp egg rolls. They were like nothing I had ever tasted that someone labeled "egg roll". I bit into it and there was cinnamon!?! Who puts cinnamon in a savory egg roll? This place does, that's who. When you taste something off of course you are going to go into inspection mode. So I looked and there was purple cabbage in it which just gave the inside a very off putting color. My husband ordered Beef and Broccoli with Garlic Sauce, which had all kinds of flavors going on, it had a ton of garlic, it was super sour, salty and just gross. The rice was over cooked also. My favorite Chinese restaurant. The food is always cooked to perfection and unlike any other. Major soul food Chinese style. My favs are the chicken in garlic sauce and the wonton soup. The garlic sauce is so aromatic. Smells amazing on the drive home. I like the white rice as it's more moist and healthy. The fried rice pre-made and I find it to be dry. Recently, I tried the pineapple chicken. I wasn't sure if it would be breaded and fried like sesame chicken. It was stir fried with a sweet n spicy sauce which included pineapple tidbits. I don't think I could get a bad order. Homemade duck sauce would be awesome if they had it. Friendly staff and accommodating to your taste at a fair price. read more

we have been ordering from Chen-Fu for years. The food is always consistent and always flavorful. And the portions are huge. I really like spicy food so I get it as a hot as can. But not everyone likes it that way. That's ok, you can ask for it to be a less spicy. As for customer service, as soon as you walk in someone greets you from behind the counter. Its usually one of the owners. She greets you with a smile and quickly takes your order. I highly recommend this place for take out Chinese food. read more

I tried Chen Fu based on its (relatively) high ratings and for its close proximity to my home in Matthews. I called in a take-out order of sesame chicken (one of my favorites). Their prices were just a tad higher that the Chinen restaurasnts we have in the Union County part of Matthews, but this place was worth trying given it's 3.5 star rating on Yelp. When I arrived to pick it up, I could not help but to notice that their facility and dining area were seedy, unappealing and borderline dirty. The women that took swiped my credit card and gave me my food was not at all friendly. She was not mean per se, just not forthcoming. Paying nearly $7 for my take-out lunch, I assumed she would at least be appreciative of my business; apparently not. The food was neatly prepared in the Styrofoam tray and the servings were very generous (see my attached picture). It was actually pretty decent, to my utter dismay given the visual appearance of the inside of their restaurant. I decided to try Chen-Fu again after receiving fantastic food about a year ago. I ordered small veggie fried rice, small sesame chicken, two egg rolls and a small chicken low mein. I was very surprised my order rang up 34.00. I've ordered the same order at other establishments and the total was significantly less. It may be pandemic prices. The food not same quality we had experienced before. "The low mien tasted as bland as the styrofoam it was served in, according to my son who is a college student." I did a takeout order and the server lady was very friendly and nice. They have a clear window with a little slot blocking the cashier area and receiving money avoiding for any physical contact. I thought that was very thoughtful during this time. In terms of food, they were just okay. My boyfriend and I had General Chicken with Lo-mein and Beef with Broccoli in lunch specials as well as House Special Fried Rice. The lo-mein was overcooked and general chicken's fried batter was soggy as if the sauce was mixed long time ago. Beef with Broccoli was really fresh and good in my opinion and House Special Fried Rice was okay, I think if the rice itself was more fresh then it could've been better. Granted I will give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe the drive home put it in this state. I've made enough egg drop that I know the corn starch can cause this if there is too much added or it sits too long. The dough on the dumplings was a bit thick, and almost over powered the meat but they were decent. It's really, really hard to find good Chinese food here in Charlotte. I'm talking your go-to takeout Chinese food. Their food is on point! Probably the best Chinese we have found in Charlotte, especially in the MoRA/Matthews area. The only thing we aren't a fan of are the steam dumplings, the dough is too thick/chewy. Everything else is on point. I love the General Chen's chicken, egg drop soup and spring rolls. Their noodles are great too! Owner is super kind. It is still my favorite take out Chinese food even though I live half way across the country. I always insist on getting Chen Fu when I come home for visits :). Great Chinese food in Matthews. I've been coming here for close to a year now whenever I work at home and need a quick Chinese fix. There are three restaurants that are always great - here, Best Wok II, and Best Wok (at Sardis Rd). This restaurant is a little dingy inside. Never dirty, but very dated. The service is always very helpful, and attentive to your needs and preferences. After five or so orders here, they had my usual down pat, and knew when I called what to have ready for me. They've given me drinks for free on occasion just to say thanks, and have had me try "off-the-menu" items before, too. The food is also very good. The sesame chicken (my standard by which I measure all Chinese takeout places) is awesome. The chicken is always tender, and the sauce is sweet with just a kick of spicy - just the way I like it. They aren't liberal with the sesame seeds (a plus), and the broccoli is very fresh. The eggrolls taste different than any I've had before. They aren't the usual crunchy, chicken/shrimp-filled rolls most other places serve. They have what appears to be red cabbage in them, and the treatment is heavenly. It tastes almost herby rather than meaty, and they are not as crunchy, but fried to perfection. Fantastic egg rolls. Prices are very reasonable, it's easy to eat lunch for $5-7, and dinner for $8-10. My wife and I order from here frequently and never pay more than $20 for two people. read more

Sometimes you just need Chinese take-out. Nothing expensive, nothing flashy, just the standard box of rice, egg roll, and gallon of sweet and sour sauce. Matthews has a couple options, but Chen-Fu is the only one still open at 8:30pm when my craving hit. The interior is very small, but the mirrored side wall helps give them impression of more space (and prevents claustrophobic anxiety attacks). They have the obligatory picture menu above the counter, near-life-size 3D artwork of the Great Wall, and the golden cat that perpetually waves you to the register. It's expected and comfortable. The food is on-par with the genre, too. All the usual suspects are present and the flavors are fairly decent. My fried rice was a little bland, but the main dishes were good. The huge servings and low prices help tip the scales in their favor. To be honest, there are better options in Matthews, but for a cheap fix that doesn't operate on unusual schedules, Chen-Fu is a neat place to check out. read more

Chen-Fu has excellent garlic sauce- perfect for broccoli or chicken. I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food but when my husband wants Chinese, this is where I enjoy going with him. The crab rangoon is especially tastey if you're in a need-lots-of-fat mood. They do have "diet food" available on their menu ("plain steamed meat and vegetables on our entrees with or without sauce"). The staff is very friendly- they make it fun to be regulars. Chen Fu was our only choice for Chinese food for years until now. Probably 8 months ago ordered our usual from there and it was absolutely tasteless. Swore I would never eat there again. Ordered tonight the Chicken Chow Mein, Beef/broccoli, and Moo Goo. I will be throwing my other half out. Not even fit to eat for lunch tomorrow. Husband said same about his. Egg rolls used to be heavenly but EVERYTHING WAS ABSOLUTELY TASTLESS. Don't waste your time or money here. You will be disappointed. Tasted no seasonings/spices at all.
