After many years, I revisited this place for lunch at its new South Boulevard location... The new place was casual, yet chic and modern...and runs on this touch screen ordering process. I actually loved the bright, comfy vibe of the place. Thought it could use a bit louder music to fill the space. I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles, Rainbow Dumplings and this Mango Jasmine Tea drink...and they were all pretty good. Still, I was surprised how my bill totaled about 35 bucks. Normally, I'm not too surprised by the pricing (even for lunch), but it felt a bit high...given that everything was served on paper and plastic wares. I did like how they have these DIY take-home plastic wares accessible and ready to go...so some points for that! Overall, it's just a casual eatery...not a full scale restaurant. I prefer full scale service, complete with nicely plated presentations, but this type of DIY eatery is just something that's becoming more common. read more

This review is for Sun's Kitchen, tucked down near LoSo/Lower South End, and let me tell you -- these dan dan noodles absolutely hit the spot. I was in one of those "I need noodles immediately" moods, and Sun's Kitchen did not disappoint. I called my order in for takeout, and everything was packed perfectly. No leaks, no mess, still hot when I got home, and the portion was surprisingly generous for the price. The dan dan noodles here are rich, savory, a little spicy, and incredibly comforting. If you're not familiar with them, dan dan noodles are a classic Sichuan street food dish from Chengdu traditionally tossed in a spicy, numbing ma-la sauce with pork, scallions, and pickled vegetables. Sun's Kitchen does a really delicious version that's flavorful without feeling too heavy. The noodles have that perfect chewy texture, and every bite has just enough heat to keep you going back for more. If you're someone who's curious about ethnic food but maybe unsure where to start, this is honestly a great entry-level dish. Yes, there's a little spice, but it's approachable and balanced. The dining room itself is modern and beautiful, and now that they serve beer and wine, I definitely need to come back and enjoy a full dine-in experience instead of rushing home with takeout. The only caveat is the parking lot can get a little chaotic since it's shared with neighboring businesses, especially during busy hours. But trust me, it's worth circling for a spot. My Mom and I had a great lunch here. It's been a good while since I had Sun's and it was my Mom's first time. I like how you can order as soon as you walk in on a computer. It was a quick and easy process. It was impersonal but I guess that is how technology is changing things. We ordered and sat ourselves. I tried the mango drink and it was really delicious!!! We ordered the dumpling platter, lamb and beef skewers, the don don noodles I believe and I got the lunch special with the spicy chicken. Everything was SO GOOD!!! My mom ate all of here food and loved it. I really enjoyed every thing too. I need to come here more often, there's a lot of other dishes I would love to try!!! The chicken itself wasn't too spicy and it was nice to regulate the level of spice by how much of the peppers I ate. Dan Dan Noodles (4/5): These noodles had a better texture than the noodles in the beef noodle soup. The pork was good, and I liked the hint of sweetness in the dish. Super sweet customer service! They bring you water with your meals but we did order the watermelon and mango jasmine rice drinks and they are soooo good! I got the beef stew and potato's meal with cucumber and eggplant! Was super yummy and my boy friend got the lamb and rice meal which he loved as well! We also got the pork dumplings which were hands down my favorite and would have gotten more if I could eat more lol with the vinegar soy sauce and the garlic sauce. I came here with my mom and i got the jianbing guozhi and it was pretty good. The only thing is the outside was pretty soggy and usually with jian bing in general the outside is a bit crispier. My mom got the breakfast combo which came with a soy bean milk, the taiwanese donut, and some soup dumplings. They were good and the soy milk was very authentic. read more

I ordered from this place not realizing I had been here before until I checked in for the review. Unsurprisingly, I seem to have ordered the same thing. The reason I didn't realize is that they have left their ghost kitchen roots behind and opened a full dine-in location of their own, which I am happy to endorse. The parking was a little limited and is shared with other things, but seating was ample and airy. They have decent vegetarian options. I was fooled by the fact that the noodles I got had a separate sauce. The flavor with the accoutrements they came with was not bad, but the sauce, which I missed until I had wrapped up those noodles, was a powerful, numbing and salty creation. It's a small menu and one high in sodium, but I enjoy it and it's more specific than average Chinese taekout. I wish them the best in their new digs. read more

Ambiance is great, bright, modern, clean. Everything is ordered via a kiosk or through your phone, very little interaction with staff but the staff were friendly. Food was a bit disappointing, flavors were bland and all the dishes had a weird seasoning which can be clearly seen on the skewer flight and eggplant. The wonton soup which I did not get a photo of was delicious and I would come back and try their other soups. They share parking with other businesses. But I'm sure there's plenty of parking spaces available. The place is cute and there are plenty of tables to sit at. They have a pretty good bit of items on their menu. The price is pretty comparable. The food is good. Nothing else I can say about it. Would come here again. Went here on a Saturday night, the parking lot for this center was packed and hard to find parking, I think it is because of the sport bar on top of the restaurant. The decor for this place is pretty and felt clean. It is simple and felt great. The concept is simple grab a table and order your food on your phone and they will bring you the food. Although ordering your food on the phone seems not much interaction with the staff, but I felt the staff cares and bring out the food quickly. The food was brought out in more to go style and able to throw away plates. The food tasted great. I ordered the beef noodle soup, I think this is one of the best beef noodle soup in Charlotte. All the other food tasted great. The price is a little high, but I will come back for the beef noodle soup. read more

First of all the parking is plentiful! The restaurant is modern and gorgeous inside. When you walk in you place your order at one of the kiosks. Ordering is simple and easy. Don't forget to grab your table number stand. Food came out quick and was delivered with a friendly smile. There is a station stocked with all the necessities- utensils, to go boxes and bags. I ordered the watermelon beverage, which was fresh and refreshing, the bbq bao buns, which were decent, not great, and the ja jang noodles, which were flavorful, but I don't think I would order again. My friend and I went during mid-autumn festival and each patron had the option to get a complimentary slice of moon cake, which I thought was a nice touch! I've been eager to try this place after seeing constant advertisements come across my Instagram. So today I decided to take my mom to lunch for some dim sum. The place is small and narrow. Decor was light but beautiful. Sun's Kitchen is an informal dining experience, you order at a kiosk or with a QR code at the table, then the food is brought out to you by a server. I believe all their food is served on to-go/disposable dining ware. Convenient for leftovers and clean up. Dim sum obviously isn't like your traditional dim sum, where carts of food are pushed around; everything they offer is on the kiosk menu. Sadly, their dim sum menu is limited. The offered several types of Bao buns, chicken feet, sui mai, spare ribs, egg tart (which I didn't see on the menu when ordering), shrimp dumplings, wonton soup and a few other unfamiliar items. Outside the dim sum menu, they have dumplings/gyoza (which is what most of the ads I've seen center around), noodles, rice bowls, street foods like skewers and veggie side dishes etc. Order: sui mai, shrimp dumpling, youtiao soup, squid skewer, and soy milk. Sui mai and shrimp dumpling didn't disappoint. Flavor was good. The soup was a little too salty and we should have asked for the youtiao on the side because it became soggy fast. Youtiao is similar to croutons but lighter in texture. And lastly the squid, it was coated with some spice rub, skewered and grilled. The portion size was generous but the flavor was not it. I couldn't make out what the spices were but they did not have a good flavor. The squid would have been better plain. Overall a decent experience. I probably won't return for dim sum but their other menu items look worth a try. read more

I heard about this place through social media and wanted to try. There is parking which is a plus! They have you order through a kiosk at the front and a server brings you the food. Our sever was amazing! I ordered the crème brûlée and instead of bringing all the food out at once he waited until we finished eating to bring our dessert. The food was ok, I wasn't in love but it wasn't bad either. In the city of Charlotte there are so many amazing restaurants to try and sadly this one doesn't stick out in my mind. I wish there was more ability to customize our food such as lowering the sugar content in the tea or having a sauce on the side with the potatoes. If I do come back I will definitely order the cucumbers again, those were the star of the meal! read more

Ordered a little bit of everything but I highly recommend the wontons and the egg tarts!!! The wontons come with a delicious chili oil and the filling is moist and so flavorful. and the egg tarts have a perfect shell crisp and delicious not too sweet custard center. Easily some of the best egg tarts in charlotte!! The Dan Dan noodles are served hot and are flavorful and taste wonderful. I personally still prefer the dumpling lady Dan Dan noodles but they truly are almost equal in terms of quality and flavor- so this is not meant to be a diss. I even tried the durian crème brûlée and I'm not a huge fan of durian but this dessert was probably the most stranger-friendly, palatable form of durian I've ever had (true compliment). durian is a very strong flavor that is very unfamiliar to American palates but the custard with the thin sugar brûlée shell on top, was honestly delicious. If you're looking for dim sum, this might be your place. It's not exactly cheap, but this isn't the Chinese takeout in a strip mall. The steamed dumplings are great (and I wish I could figure out how to get more of the dipping sauce onto them, as thin as it is) and the bao are almost creamy with how soft they are. Service-wise, it's a bit odd ordering off of a screen at the front and then having your food brought out to your table, but it's real quick. Apparently something about it works well. The restaurant itself is essentially a cafe - high windows letting in plenty of light and tall ceilings and paintings to make an otherwise cramped space seem larger than it is. I needed to do takeout this first go, and let me commend Sun's Kitchen for the absolute best online ordering experience. They have excellent photos and full descriptions of every dish. I picked up my order, though the place was spotless and inviting (as were the staff), and went home with my goodies. I want to try EVERYTHING but convinced myself to be conservative and chose the Ma La dumplings and the Xiao Long Bao. The bao were so so so so good, as was the scallion garlic sauce I chose for it. I am absolutely ordering those again. The Ma La dumplings - one of my favorite Asian dishes - were, first of all, no joke spicy. Not ghost pepper spicy but they have a good kick. I did not, however, like them as much as I had expected; some slightly bitter flavor, likely in the sauce, turned me off of them and I left half uneaten. If you knew me with dumplings you'd realize something was amiss because I didn't finish off the dish the next day. That's how unpleasant I found the sauce. And that's why I'm giving it four stars instead of five. I'll try more soon and may update the rating accordingly. Next time, though, I need noodles! read more

A unique place to get Jiambing in North Carolina. We came for this but we got more than just the Jiambing, we also got a Rou Jia Mo, a chinese pork burger which was spicy and delicious like everything we had. There's 2 different jiambing on the menu, 1 with and 1 without the yutiao, a fried donut both are good but different because of the texture of the yutiao. I shared the dumpling flight with friends, which was very good (especially with the soy vinegar) even if the dumpling wrapper was a bit thick. The Xiao long bao was probably my favorite item. As an avid lover of spicy food, I ordered the spicy braised beef noodles, and it was WAY too hot for me. Although it was my own mistake, they were very accommodating and gave me the non-spicy broth and an empty bowl to replace it. It was incredibly kind, and the soup was delicious. It's definitely a casual spot with not a whole lot of tables, and it does seem a bit more formatted for carry out (like all the food being served in disposable/to-go containers). If we have a Sun's Kitchen near where we live, it would probably be an almost weekly routine for me to visit it. Sun's Kitchen has a wide variety of Chinese cuisines (not a large menu, just different types of Chinese food). There are Taiwanese, Cantonese/dim sum, Sichuan, Northern, etc... from what I can tell. During our short visit, we went there twice because I wanted to try different types of dishes. The honest truth is, nothing wow'd me in flavor, but I would be ecstatic if I have this type of food near me. We tried braised beef noodle soup (pretty darn good flavor), ma-la dried peppers chicken (pretty good, ask for extra spicy), ma-la Xiao Long bao or dumplings (I forgot, it was alight), egg tarts (good), sai do si (yum), lamb skewers (good), ma-la shredded tofu (I'd come back for this again and again), you tiao (a'ight), soy milk (decent), egg tarts (pretty good), special crepe with egg and you tiao (flavor is there, but texture is off), and mango lemon Jasmin tea (yum). I also love the efficiency of this restaurant. Walk in, order at kiosk (or via you phone), take a #, get your utensils, and wait for the food to arrive. Not a lot of space for dine in, but it's also not really a hang out type joint so I imagine the tables turn fairly quickly. Everything tasted a little weird. The only thing that was really good was the WonTon Soup. We got pork dumplings and I had shrimp skewers and my wife had beef skewers. Always hot, and always HEAPING with tender, flavorful braised beef and chalk full with noodles. The value is outstanding.
