Tho the Hainanese rice seemed oily, it had a taste I could not pinpoint that tempted me to order more to go...garlic jasmine rice with a chewy texture, not dry. Mmmm. The Sarong Barong was served in a crispy taro bowl which our happy server snipped into bite sized pieces in front of us. Lots of different veges with shrimp and chicken cooked in a sweet, but not too sweet, soy sauce-wine base. Loved that it was not salty like most Asian restaurants. I couldn't pass up an even more tastier dish of Belacan (shrimp paste which is reminiscent of fish sauce). Served with okra and chicken for my dish but also available with green beans, beef, or shrimp. I'll definitely order this again. Now I must find a Belacan dish recipe . It's bn a while since receiving such doting service. From beginning to end, it reminded me of restaurants of days past. We were tended to meticulously from chopsticks to even being asked if we wanted our second bowl of white rice brought out to be added to the leftover take home. Most servers wouldn't bother. I hope to try other dishes here. It was the night before the wedding and my parents love trying new food. We tried 3 or 4 dishes from the appetizer and entree menu. Absolutely everything was spot on. The service was great too. They had sat us at a booth but realized with all the food we ordered that we'd need a bigger table! I have to shout out the roti appetizer (amaaaazing curry and soft roti) and the soft shell crab (I don't usually like soft shell crab but this one was super tender underneath a perfect crunch) and the Singaporean noodles (I've had the Chinese version before but Malaysian version is better). I had been craving this place shortly after that initial visit but it was so far from us that it just didn't happen before the quarantine. Don't be fooled by its simple, inconspicuous exterior, this little family-run Malaysian joint packs quite a wallop. Although somewhat hidden among a bevy of other small storefront independently-run restaurants, it is definitely worth finding at the insanely busy Arboretum Shopping Center. It should also be noted that it and many of its neighbors have been in business for many years in their same locations. The menu is packed with hard-to-find Asian options including Thai, Cantonese, Mongolian and, of course, Malaysian dishes. Not that adventurous? No worries, they also offer your standard Chinese American staples like Hunan Chicken, Beef & Broccoli and Fried Rice . They're all delicious and that's where I started, but thank goodness I didn't stop there! On my most recent dinner visit, I ordered the Crispy Duck for $19 (hey I decided to live a little, I had a BOGO coupon.) It was outstanding! The portion size was generous, it was a perfectly prepared crispy brown, and beautifully plated. On most visits, my wife and/or I order the Char Kway Teow ($13), a Malaysian dish consisting of flat noodles topped by shrimp, bean sprouts and eggs. We also add broccoli. It is a fabulous dish made known to us by our former Chinese house guest who loved this place. Every visit is an adventure. Service is also consistently warm and friendly and the sanitation score seems to consistently be in the high 90's (97.5 this visit). Their chocolate covered buttermints (served with the check) in lieu of your run-of-the-mill, stale fortune cookies is also a nice touch. If I nitpick, my only real gripe is that the bench seating along the walls are in dire need of an upgrade, but that's not gonna keep me away. It's definitely a Gotta Try! This is my favorite restaurant in the whole world. I can't even begin to explain how much of an impact this restaurant has had on me. The first time I ever went to Malaya kitchen was maybe about 10 (or more) years ago when I was 7 years old. Immediately, I fell in love with the Thai tea. At that point I was too young to care about food. As I grew older, however, this place became my escape. Throughout high school, every time I felt sad, I would come to Malaya Kitchen to pick up a Thai tea, and my worries were automatically resolved. I loved the Thai tea so much that I even tried making it at home, but to this day, I'm unable to replicate the taste of the Thai tea at malaya kitchen. Moving on to the food, in middle school I would only stick to the Singapore rice noodles because it was simply amazing and I thought nothing could ever top it. However, my dad would always get the spicy cilantro chicken, and upon trying it, tears fell out of my eyes because of how amazing the flavor was. This became my next go-to dish. Then, I realized I wanted to try some new dishes. I tried the chicken fried rice, and the chicken was so flavored and amazing in the fried rice. I also tried the Malaysian noodles, and I dream about it every night. The chili chicken was also an amazing option considering I love spicy food and this had the perfect amount of spice. My mom is vegetarian, and she always used to order the curry laksa, pad Thai, or the mee goreng. All I can say was.. amazing. Then, she ended up switching from those 3 "usuals" to trying out the spicy cilantro chicken, but with tofu instead of chicken. This was an absolute game changer for her and she LOVES it. As for appetizers, the roti canai will be the most beautiful, flavorful food you will ever eat. Fun fact, my family invented the spicy cilantro chicken (it originally came with beef I think), but we asked for it with chicken and it was then placed on the menu. I've talked enough about the food. Let's talk about the people there. I've gone there so many times to pick up Thai tea that they now know me as the "Thai tea girl." They always ask me about how school is going and are the nicest people in the world. I love malaya kitchen; I've taken everybody important to me to malaya kitchen and they can all attest to how amazing this place is. My only regret is going out of state for college because now I won't be able to get malaya kitchen as much. Truly though, this is, and will always be my favorite restaurant. read more

We ordered both a Thai Tea (not too strong, but good flavors) & a Malaysian coffee (nice balanced strong taste, reminded me of a latte) I tried a shrimp dish and my mother really wanted to come and try the curry laksa. I was initially very excited but the flavor wasn't as delicious as I thought it was going to be. For the drive I'm not sure I would make the trek to South Charlotte for the average food. read more

Even though they are a small restaurant looking almost like a Chinese takeaway I was blown away by how clean the tables and the whole restaurant generally was. It was my goto at all Malaysian restaurants. For the main dish, I got the chili chicken stir fry and my friend got a curry laksa. As we were just done with appetizers and moving on to our entrees, I had about a quarter of still remaining. I would have imagined the waiter pulling away the plate before setting our entree plates, but to prove me wrong, the waiter suggested to keep the remaining roti and use it as a wrap with the stir fry entree! I love when waiters could read our minds! The chilli chicken stir fry entree was magical. The chicken pieces literally melted in my mouth! The texture, the softness, I still don't know how they cooked that. Not at all leathery or chewy like any regular chicken. The only downside was, there were more beans than the chicken. I would have expected more. The curry laksa that my friend got was huge containing a whole lot of vegetables. The vegetables is another story - so fresh and well cooked! So I happened to see if there were any Malaysian restaurants in Charlotte that were close to my house. Malaya Kitchen was pretty close at The Arboretum. My wife and I drove over around 7pm. There were a few empty tables and we were seated right away. I was looking forward to sampling this cuisine again & looked over the menu with interest. I wound up ordering Tuna Tataki, Chicken Tom Yum, Thai ice tea and Beef Rendang. My wife ordered Satay Tofu, fried Pot Stickers and a Cucumber Salad. My Chicken Tom Yum was spicy and flavorful. The Tuna Tataki had no flavor at all and the accompanying sauce was salty more than anything else. The Satay Tofu had some odd textural problems but would've been okay if it hadn't been stuffed with cucumber & bean sprouts. The tofu was very hard to cut as well. The Pot Stickers had no flavor either. The sauce was another salty concoction. The Beef Rendang was a curry sauced dish. The orchid on the plate was beautiful, but the pineapple slices were a mystery. The presentation of the beef was not very appetizing. The beef was very tender but had no flavor. The orange sauce had nice flavor it's just a shame that there wasn't enough of it to eat with every mouthful of beef. The dish also had a spicy icon, but wasn't spicy at all. I overheard another guest asking for chili oil. The food should be spicy enough not to require it. I'll be thinking twice before I go back. read more

We got take-out from here today, ordering via phone (you can order off the website, but there's a service fee). We got... - Curry Laksa (with chicken) The curry laksa had lots of meat and vegetables, but they were the star of the dish because the curry "broth" itself was very one dimensional, without any umami. (If you want a good curry laksa, stick with CO instead.) - Char Kway Teow (with chicken) This dish just tasted like food-court lo-mein or plain stir fry but with better noodles. The onions and bean sprouts added some nice variety in texture, and we liked it better than the laksa, but nothing I would bother ordering again. (If you like this dish I would recommend the Ho Fun noodles at Great Wall Chinese off Caramel Rd.) - Roti Canai This was underwhelming as the "curry" was the same as the broth in the laksa. It was more watery than any curry I've had, and more like dipping your bread in spicy chicken broth. (The one served at Hawkers Market is way better.) - Satay Tofu This was easily the most flavorful item we ordered. It was the only thing I would recommend out of what we tried today. I'm not sure how I ended up in this part of town, but I let my Yelp app randomize for me. I said one $ and sort by highest rating. After excluding a fast food place, Malaya was the top. Now, I know NOTHING about Malaysian food. In fact, I'm not even sure I know where Malaysia is on our big planet. But after eating this meal, I need to find out more. I stuck to the specials menu and ordered the "Malaya Roll" which turned out to be ground chicken in a pastry roll that was fried to a crunchy goodness and served with a sweet chilli sauce. I ate all of it and then dipped the garnish cucumbers into the sauce too. For my main, the Hong Kong Duck Soup caught my eye. When it arrived, it was a massive vat of dark colored broth with noodles, veggies and probably half of a duck sliced into bits. It took a little while until it cooled enough to eat but when it did, OMG yum. Deep flavor in the broth and the noodles were just perfect al dente and the bok choi was nice and tender. The duck. Oh, the duck. Tasty, meaty and all too many more adjectives that need to go here to describe a great meal. Check the picture I posted! I opted to skip dessert, instead finishing the Chinese beer I had ordered. Great service sitting at the bar.
