What a beautiful tea experience. Visited on a chilly Sunday so the tea pairing was perfect. Make sure you try to make reservations since it's a small and intimate place. I was able to snag a walk in slot but it was 1:30pm. I got the afternoon tea package for $35. You get a tea of your choice and 2 sandwiches option alongside the desserts. Great cozy spot for an afternoon tea. It took me a while to try this place because they're always booked out. After the third try (and remembering to check a week and a half ahead), I was able to reserve a table for three. The experience is lovely. They have a large selection of caffeinated and non caffeinated teas to choose from and you get your own pot. The food that came with it was light bites so I suggest you eat beforehand if you are hungry. They did not have a lot of staff that day so it took really long to wait for someone to walk by. read more

It was named with the word 'caramel' on it, and when a sugar cube and cream was added, the tea tasted like boba milk tea. That was one magical tea. The sandwiches arrived a couple minutes later after the tea. The Malayan sandwich filling mostly contain meat and protein. I recall one, that tasted like sweet ham and another also was a different pork like filling. While they were good, in my next visit, I might swap around and pick some fillings from Malayan and the other from English. While I liked the sandwiches with the meat, my family preferred some with vegetable. I'm very pleased to see more sandwich options here because sandwich fillings mostly are the same from one tea room to another. Malayan Tea Room stood out to have more options than the others I have tried. From the Malayan selection, my most favorite is the one with the coconut butter. This one is sweet but the butter creates an even saltiness. My family and I agreed, that we love the desserts. I love supporting small Asian businesses, and I grew up going to British-style afternoon tea. What better thing than to put the two together?! I can honestly say the Malaysian-style tea at Malaya was the best afternoon tea I ever had. Booked an appointment here on Monday and was able to grab a spot for 3:30pm on Saturday. I was surprised because it's Valentine's Day weekend! We each got the $33 afternoon tea. The price is very good compared to prices in SF and other parts of the Bay. For tea, we got the No. 44 (peaches and cream) which smelled so nice if you love fruity teas (but it wasn't overly fruity) as well as a classic earl grey with vanilla (the staff recommended vanilla over lavender earl grey). There's lots to choose from, from black to green to herbal teas. We also got a Malaysian pulled milk tea to share. From experience I know it can pack a punch in terms of caffeine. It was hot and creamy! Loved it. Sandwiches: Curry chicken - While the layer of meat is quite thin, you can definitely taste the flavor. This was my favorite Malaysian flavor. Fig, brie and turkey - This was my favorite traditional flavor. The sweet fig jam and the brie went together so well! Beef jerky - The beef jerky reminded me of Vietnamese sweet beef jerky. I think it comes with a butter spread, and I love salty and sweet combinations. Salmon - this was shred up, quality smoked salmon. We could barely taste the dill, it felt like just fish. Scones - This is my favorite part of every afternoon tea, and this does not disappoint. It is perfectly crumbly and moist, and I loved the honey glaze on top. Pack on the clotted cream! Sweets - I think there was pandan bread, a fruit tart, and little yogurt cups. They were all really good, I liked the Asian twist. The service was so friendly! I thought it was a bit weird that you had to ring the bell to flag someone down (it's a covid precaution and I completely understand--just felt funny grabbing someone's attention with the bell). A review is long overdue as my daughter and I've frequented Malaya numerous times in the past couple of years, generally to celebrate her returns during college breaks. On our most recent visit, we enjoyed the delectable and tasty morsels on the Mother's Day prix fixe menu; the kale and water chestnut sipping soup was exceptional and cleansed the palate between courses. The artichoke and cheese in phyllo pastry was a surprise and welcome treat. Service, as usual, is pleasant and unobtrusive. Celiac review! I'll say the nice things first. Scroll to the end for an update. Malaya Tea Room is a nice high tea experience. Each time I go I call and ask if they can do gf and they say YES. It's relatively inexpensive compared to other high tea places in the bay. They have flavors for both picky and adventurous eaters, and their desserts change seasonally. What I like about them is that the desserts are usually gluten free; mango sago, ondeh ondeh, macarons, and chocolates. My parents got some of the items (not the macaron), in addition to a small slice of cake (they are not gf)-- they also received scones and potato canapés and fruit, none of which I received. They SOMETIMES have gluten free bread for the sandwiches, plus gf crackers. They have a summer item (this cost extra-- not included) of Air Batu Campur which is shaved ice with toppings: red bean, sweet corn, pandan jelly, grass jelly, rose syrup, coconut palm sugar, and evaporated milk. It's gf and refreshing! Overall the staff seems aware and knowledgeable about what gf is. Staff is very friendly. Service is good. Here are the critiques: My one chief complaint is that I didn't get any fruit but my parents did-- since when is fruit glutinous??? This, in addition to not having gf scones or canapés (even though the price of the meal includes the scone and canapés whether or not you receive it). They offered neither to replace fruit nor scone and canapés with another gf sandwich flavor, or an gf extra dessert. So the lack of fruit and scone with no replacement makes it $35 for two sandwiches, three small (SMALL) desserts, and tea. It was good but just disappointing that they did not want to substitute either. I want to make a special note or something else: when I originally posted this review on another platform, I received a pretty rude response from the owner, claiming that they would never do gluten free tea, and that I demanded it despite them telling me they couldn't do gf. I made a reservation earlier 1-2 months ago, we came here to celebrate my hubby's birthday recently. This is our first-time experience of having high tea here. And both of us very enjoying the indoor ambiance, the food was so delicious and delicate. We love really their English breakfast tea, Malaysian Pulled tea (Teh Tarik) & hot apple cider tea. The price was quite reasonable for us. The staffs here are very attentive and friendly. They would help you as much as possible if you need their attention. We would love to come back here more often for some special occasions as I can see they have a different menu for certain times. I made a last minute reservation the morning of because I'm a procrastinator. Lucky I was able to get one. I booked for a 11:15 seating for two to have a special breakfast to celebrate and spend quality time with my Grandma. We ordered the afternoon tea for one which is $33 per person. They also have a "light " tea service which is $28 (one sandwich choice instead of two) and a "Wee Tea" for kids which is $20. It's a traditional afternoon tea service , of course offers three courses. #1 tea sandwiches, #2 scones, and #3 a dessert . And we each get to choose a tea: either a black, green, or herbal . We ordered and shared our sandwiches: 2 English tea sandwiches which were the salmon , chive and the other was a turkey, brie, and fig. And , 2 Asian Malay sandwiches were included the coconut jam and chicken curry. ALL of which were very tasty and beautiful and delicate. The scones were tasty and I loved the lemon curd. The potato canape was light. The dessert course was very unique also. They had this pretty jelly lychee dessert, a yummy panna cotta, a pretty green (I think) pandan sponge. Not too sweet, just right. Even though the servings are small, it is really filling. We actually had to take home half of our sandwiches home because we got full pretty quickly. The service is great. It's provided with their service that if something more is needed, like if you need more hot water to be added to your pot or more more sugar or milk you ring the tiny bell to call the waitress. I felt very wierd personally to call on someone like a butler but it's part of the experience and they came right away. I love this place , feels very sophisticated, and Crazy Rich Asians-esque. Loved the ease to book a table as there are specific sittings through the day. I loved the interior and the cleanliness of the place. Great choices on the menu price range from $35 to $30 depending on appetite. The choices of teas are fantastic. I was a little disappointed with the Brie figue jam and turkey sandwich whereby the bread was overpowering the Brie that was hardly present. The scones were ok but more biscuity than scone. We decided to dine inside since there weren't many people there. The interior space is small but super cute and cozy. I loved the warm tones and inviting décor. When I initially got there, they had sat us in the middle of the room, but then offered to move us to a corner booth near the window. We loved this space as it gave us some beautiful natural light and a nice street view. I was running behind (as usual), but they were able to seat my friend when she arrived. I love that they put the little name plates on the tables for reserved parties. I felt special seeing my "Shayla B. Party of 2" sign on the table. A really cute gesture. Unlike other tea rooms that I've been to previously, Malaya offers a mix of both English and Malaysian style teas and snacks. We decided to try a combinations of the two, and we really enjoyed just about everything aside from the desserts. All of the sandwiches were tasty, but the southeast Asian curry chicken sandwiches were definitely the standout. It was so flavorful and a tad bit spicy. I would definitely love to explore their Malaysian sandwiches a bit more next time just based off of that sandwich alone. The classic scones and clotted cream were scrumptious. The only thing that we really didn't care for were the desserts. The desserts were a mix of jello, rice pudding, and mini macarons. The macarons were decent, it there jellies and rice puddings weren't appetizing at all. We also both aren't really a fan of jello and rice pudding, so that could be the bulk of the dissatisfaction as well. Aside from that, everything else was great. They had mentioned on their website that they would be offering limited service due to COVID, but we didn't experience this at all. In fact, all of the staff members were extremely pleasant and they checked in on us multiple times to see how we were doing. They also cleared items off of our tables as we finished them. We stayed there passed closing and not once did they try and rush us out. We were honestly having so much fun that we kind of lost track of time. Patrons use a bell at a table to have the wait staff come to you. So many food and tea options to pair with. Our group mixed and matched some British classics with Malaysian options. I stuck to the British menu (how imperialistic of me). Sandwiches were good the salmon and fig, turkey, with Brie were nice. I would say the highlights were the ambiance as well as the various bites that came with each food option. Recommend coming with 4 people and sharing food to get a lil bit of everything. Minimum purchase of $28 each but $28 is the lowest one-person menu anyway. For $5, you can get an additional sandwich choice and other sweets so I think the $33 menu is worth it to try more flavors! We came here with our aunt for afternoon tea but after I picked up my aunt, I got lost and was alittle late for our 11 am reservation but luckily my daughter was there first. It was a treat from my daughter to take us there. Middle tier included a traditional British scone with clotted cream and kasturi limecurd along with a delish canape (so yummy I ate the whole clotted cream on my scone)! Bottom tier included one sandwich of your choice, so we ordered the smoked salmon, the curry chicken and the Malaysian style pork jerky. And for teas, we ordered the Earl Grey with vanilla, No. 54 with calendula, butter and caramel, and No. 14 genmaicha with coconut! So, on a recent visit to the Bay Area, a friend and I ended up at Malaya Tea Room. Reservations. Enough said. Hit their website. Choose a date and time. Even a non tea drinker should be able to manage. Tip: let the know you prefer indoor seating. Think sidewalk seating or Bay Area weather. You're welcome. Frickin' Covid has things changing on the fly - so ask or check the menu for purchase minimums. Gettin' old - I don't remember and things could have changed since my visit. If you know your teas, pick your poison. I chose Rooibos Superior. It was. Also got an order of Butterfly Pea mainly for the Gram. Add lemon and the color changes from blue to purple. Looks cool. Not much in the way of flavor. It was basically hot lemon water. The finger foods were decent but none of our selections stood out for me. Not that they were bad - just that I wasn't there for the food. I was there for the tea. And that's what I had. Tea. Service was great. Helps when there's a bell to ring for assistance. This place definitely surpassed my expectations. The location: right on the main road with lots of free street parking. The shops is intimate and cozy with a few tables outside. As the weather heats up, those outdoor seats are going to be the place the be! Service was undeniably attentive. They specialize in Malaysian style but also have the traditional tea treats. We enjoyed the chicken curry sandwich, salmon. Favorite tea was the caramel infused as well as the peach mango. Loved that we got to choose a tea each person as some houses only a few to share with the table! Malaya Tea Room in Alameda, CA is such a charming spot for afternoon tea. I went with a group of six ladies celebrating a birthday. Imagine stepping into 1920s Malaya - think rattan fans and lush greenery with a delightful twist on the traditional afternoon tea. They have the classic finger sandwiches like egg salad, salmon, and cucumber as well as a scone and clotted cream, but the true gems are the Asian-inspired options. The chicken curry, Malaysian beef jerky, and coconut kaya jam sandwiches absolutely delicious. For dessert, you'll find Asian treats like mango sago, kuih lapis layer cake, pandan and chocolate sponge cakes. Even the little chocolate candy "rocks" were a revelation. For a full afternoon tea experience, it's a very affordable spot considering the high quality and unique offering, and only a 30-minute drive from San Francisco and five minutes from downtown Alameda with cute shopping on Park Street. Afternoon tea is the best and I'm so glad Alameda had such a fabulous tea room. I honestly can't wait until we are open again and we can dine inside. It looks so cute. I emailed them a day before I wanted to pick up the boxes and they responded and emailed an invoice to pay. Super easy. They are participating in Alameda Restaurant Week for each box is $30 that feeds one. Everything inside was tasty! From the cute sandwiches to macaron. You have a choice of teas we tried black and green. Also love that they are are doing curbside pickup! Had my 1 year old son with me so was great to not need to get out of the car. up! read more

The cutest little tea experience! For $33 here's what you get: -choice of tea in a personal kettle -2 finger sandwiches of your choice (8 pieces) -scone with lemon curd and whipped butter -3 house desserts (macaron, tart, tapioca was what I got) The ambience is really sweet with amazing service. Their outdoor seating is a total vibe. You are seated in a wicker thrown next to beautiful planters. If you're outdoors, take a sweater if it's windy. We were proved with umbrellas to cover the sun. This made for a really lovely afternoon activity. I will definitely be back! read more

Was so looking forward to try this out once I learned that they are reopened for dine in, finally the opportunity came. We are a big fan of high tea as we had tried many places in UK, HK, etc. We have high expectations on scone, tea, and finger sandwiches. Malaya didn't disappoint us. A little cute place good for girls get together. We had a lot of fun and very tasty food. The Malaysian fusion is perfect, here is what we ordered : - Umami meat floss with basil house spread - Pork Jerky with light mayo - Coconut jam (kaya) with sliced cold butter - Curry chicken (Southeast asian style) They are all very good. The pork jerky is one of my favorite snack in Asia, that's a really interesting idea to make it in a sandwich, we like it but will order something else to try out next time, if you have never tried the Asian style pork jerky you shall order. The scone and the sweets are all very delicious, usually scone serves with clotted cream and raspberry/strawberry jam, however they serve kasturi limecurd here, pretty unique, but I pretty jam, just personal preference. We had Malaya's Signature Golden Monkey and Malaya's English Breakfast Blend, if you want to drink with milk and sugar, choose breakfast blend instead of golden monkey. Last but not least the price is very reasonable compared to other tea places, we found some places with very nice decorations for taking photos only but the food and tea are just so so, but they cost an arm and a leg ;p I already thinking to come again, highly recommend this place, and don't forget to make reservations. read more

TLDR; For the togo boxes, try to order a couple with friends/family so you can try different sandwiches! We tried the afternoon tea in a box set a couple weekends ago with some company. It was easy enough to preorder through email and they confirmed and sent an invoice back for us to pay. Pickup was a little bit slow - my sister arrived early for pick up, but even when it hit our pickup time, the order wasn't ready for another 10 more minutes. Not a huge deal though, since we weren't in a rush. The food was pretty tasty. We all had different favorite sandwiches! My favorite was the smoked salmon, and some other favorites were the fig and brie, as well as the kaya and butter one! Since you can only pick one sandwich flavor per box, we all chose different ones so we could trade and try a bunch! I'd recommend doing that for your first time, so you know which faves to get next time! I wish we could pick the macaron flavor though because I ended up with a flavor I didn't like (not a huge fruity person). But my boyfriend's pistachio-tasting one was good! The scone is pretty good too. I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the pudding thing with chia seeds - it seemed like it was lychee but also the flavor wasn't strong enough for any of us to confirm. All in all, everything was pretty good and looked very aesthetic too! We definitely want to go try this place in person once we're fully vaccinated to get the full experience! read more
