typical crappy brooklyn auto shop, you show up there and no one speaks english or looks you in the eye, you've got to hunt around for the fat guy (with impenetrable russian accent). twice i go there with relatively simple problems, they don't look very busy, twice the fat guy mutters something about not being able to do any work today -- 'i don't have anybody here' he says, while i'm looking at a half-dozen techs. personally i think the owner favors the orthodox jews in the area as customers -- knowing he can rip them off. please avoid this wretched shop read more

I know nothing about cars & seldom need to use a mechanic / repair shop, so I was looking for a place close to Bed Stuy to take my 2007 Lexus that wasn't starting. Plenty of places in Brooklyn have lots of bad reviews, so I went with Malibu due to their lack of abundantly bad reviews. Diagnosed as a rat-chewed wiring harness. Estimated at $390 to fix, which is exactly what I paid. Bit skeptical around how much work/time was actually involved (e.g., I'm a dude who knows nothing about cars & it could have just been a loose ECM wiring plug or a single chewed wire), but at the end of the day, my car is now running perfectly & I didn't have to spend $1k+, so I don't really care how much time actually went into it. Full wiring harness replacements can be thousands of dollars. Also got a tire patched and swapped out for $20, which is cheaper than what a tire repair shop would have charged. Great communication & updates... called in the AM for drop off via tow truck & they promptly kept me updated on progress throughout the day and notified me immediately when my car was ready. Also worth noting (which is pretty reasonable) -- they charge a daily car storage fee once work is done after 24 hours. My dream of not having to deal with street sweeping for a week was unfortunately shattered pretty quickly because they were so quick. Another reason I went with Malibu is because they have a spacious workspace that can hold a lot of cars -- lots of other repair shops have 1-2 lifts in what's effectively a residential sized two car garage. Malibu has a massively sized car warehouse that can hold multiple cars being worked on, and has space for other cars around still. Entire staff is eastern euro (not sure the specific flavor), but they were friendly. I picked my car up right at closing, and got blasted with cig smoke in the garage, which felt appropriate for a car shop closing up for the day. 5/5, would come back! read more

I've been taking my car to Malibu for several years for NYS inspections and oil changes and have found them to be honest, reliable, and considerate. When my fuel pump light came on, they checked it out free of charge and told me everything was fine, and that it was probably just an issue with the gas cap not being tight enough. They even walked over to jump-start my battery when I was parked a block away. They will also tell you straight up when they can't do the work you're looking for (like cleaning up rust spots). Second review for this place, only because my experience was even better the second time round. Had a tire blow-out on the highway, scraped my bumper and wheel arch pretty badly. Given how positive my last interaction was with Gene and his guys, I thought I'd give them a call. Immediately, I was told what had to be replaced (1 part, which I knew needed replacing), what could be repaired or replaced (my choice). As I say, the bumper was pretty well banged up, but Gene assured me he could repair it. When I picked it up, I was truly amazed - it looked better than it had new and the cost for the entire thing was less than replacing a single piece of the bumper! Left my car here for the first time due to a code P0456 small leak. Engine light on. Very poor communication I called daily repeatedly and was put on hold no one returns or many times they didn't answer. When they did they couldn't tell me what was wrong with it. After 3 days they tell me a rat at my wire and charged me over 200 in cash to fix it. I picked up my car and a few weeks later the same light comes back on. Had someone look at the wires to find out they didn't change any wire. Complete scam! read more

Wow. Was hearing a soft metallic clang and brought the car to Malibu. Immediately, the lead mechanic asked to ride in the car. "200% it is the tailpipe" he said. We brought it back to the shop and he put it on the lift. It was the tailpipe. 20 mins later it was off the lift and silently purring along. Amazing...how thoroughly and immediately this service was offered. Sure, it may have been a slow day and my timing was right....but their inclination and willingness to offer thorough service....is a constant! read more

They were open on Sunday to do some diagnostics on the engine problem with a Volvo S60. I had another mechanic do an emergency patch on an ignition coil to get home, but the car was not accelerating properly. Arkadiy (excuse me for incorrect spelling?) and his team checked the coils/spark plugs/engine and found that the fuel injector was faulty. All supply shops were closed on Sunday, so he told me that it will be worked on Monday. They had my car working around 11am, and he showed me the faulty fuel injector. Malibu will be my go to shop in the future. read more
