Perhaps its the fact that I've travelled a lot and am used to a certain standard...I stayed at the Mallard Inn at the recommendation of a local resident while in Lakeport on business. I pulled in and it is obvious that the place is old and needs repairs. Lily was nice and while I booked a small room with no kitchen she implored me to upgrade and even showed me the difference in rooms - I didn't need a kitchen and the small room was fine, but I felt like maybe she needed the extra income, so I upgraded. The room itself is very modest, everything is old and in need of an update...I wasn't sure I wanted to walk on the carpet on my bare feet. With that being said, the bed, bathroom and kitchen area were clean. There is not HVAC, so be weary in the heat of summer (small wall AC unit) or the freeze of winter (small floor heater). I ventured to the elevated dock area to look out at the lake - The view is beautiful, there is zero doubt about that, but the dock and the surrounding structures are all in such disrepair its very sad; I didn't feel safe. The walls are quite thin (I was in #5) and I could here traffic from the street, doors closing, TV's, conversation, etc...Also, they advertise that no pets are allowed, but the man staying in the unit next to mine had a large labrador that came lumbering out as I arrived...He later took the dog to the lake, let it swim and then brought it back wet and let it back into his unit...mmmm wet dog smell! Would I stay again? Given that there really isn't any good hotel (Marriott, Hilton, etc) in Lakeport, his place is as good as any and did I mention the bag of Famous Amos cookies on my pillow?! Why couldn't I find this place on Yelp when we were in Lakeport late one night, and were looking for a last-minute place to stay? We were actually going to check out a place next door and fell in love with Mallard House. My husband walked in to check out if they take dogs, the owner came out to look at our cute little pup, and within ten minutes we were tucked into a sweet little cottage close to the Lake. What we really enjoyed was the quality of the bed and linens. Comfy! And, I'll admit that I was anxious about staying by Clear Lake because of it's bad rep with poverty...but this place was quiet and actually gorgeous in a way that Napa can't compete with. read more

After reading many of the yelp reviews, and looking at the beautiful pictures my family and I decided to stay here for the weekend. Sadly our stay hasn't been a pleasant one to say the least. First off from what we've been told from other people staying here, the previous owners were very kind and generous. They took care of the place very well and made it an enjoyable experience for folks. But the new ownership is a tight wad middle eastern man, who I had to pull teeth when I asked for extra towels so my kids could go swimming. He said the kids couldn't play basketball because it was too loud (about 8 pm). And he actually had the nerve to knock on the neighbors door and told the kids (who's parents were not in the room) to keep it down because they were too loud. So about the amenities, the fridge in the room is about a constant 70 degrees. The freezer as you can see is capable of holding two I've cube trays and one pack of hotdogs. I'm a 6"0 man and the shower head goes to my shoulder so unless you're a midget then you're going to have to sit in that shower. The gorgeous spa in the pictures is more like a mosquito breeding ground with a puddle at the bottom. And out of the 3 power outlets in the bbq area, only one actually works. I will definitely not be coming back here. But it is a nice area and there are plenty more complexes in the area which aren't run by shady just out to make a buck type folk. Update: Our microwave (Rm. 11) didn't work and neither did room 8's. read more

potential - cute adorable.. sweet place.. that seems to have been caught up in lots of deferred maintenance projects. If I had that place, I would keep it really sweet all year...especially through the Spring - Summer range. no excuse. I told the owner I would give 5 stars to places that deserve it.. So it's Lake County, CA. I don't have a whole lot of expectations but I must say this place a great find! They have little cottages which are a short walk from the lake. The rooms are clean and pleasant. Clive and Lily are very nice as well. I go to Lakeport for work and this is a great little place to stay. Most of the rooms have kitchenette, full or half. It is a great way to pack food and cook there. Don't expect a breakfast buffet like the conventional business hotels. They have a coffee maker with some pastries if you need something. Overall, a GREAT place to stay!! read more

First I'd like to say to Lorri, who obviously was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, get a grip, lady...wow....next time sip your Cristal in the back of your limo and search for your Ritz Carlton in Beverly Hills...you're obviously in the wrong part of town....#pretentiousnessatitsbest....this place was more than adequate... Nice location...nice touch with the cookies and pastries in the room...and a great rate for the night...Clyde was an awesome host...very pleasant and accommodating...we were merely passing thru and stumbled upon this little gem...would definitely stay here again...so if you feel that you need the red carpet treatment, complete with white table cloths and a white glove experience... Keep driving...of you want real hometown hospitality and small town charm, book a room here...it's clean and tidy...and worth every penny.... read more

My sister made reservations for us to stay here 6/3 and 6/4/2014 while we went to our grandfather's funeral. I had traveled 2,300 miles away (and 2 planes, one delayed, and a rented car later) to get there. She had called the manager the day before to indicate that we'd be getting there late--as late as 11pm or midnight (due to my travel). The manager, a man, indicted that he would leave the room unlocked with the key inside and that she should also check in with the office. When we arrived that evening (late), the manager did not answer the doorbell or our knocking. My sister finally called and the manager was very nasty and claimed that she should have not checked in, but just entered the room. He was in error. The room itself was one of several "half-cottages." I say half because since the place was built, the owners have cut each cottage in half to maximize the number of guests. Unfortunately, whoever did the work was clearly unaware of codes for electricity, water, etc. The places are shockingly poorly set up (with electrical extension cords running all over the place), and our half cottage had a makeshift shower with thin plastic sheets glued together at the seams and a temporary floor and drain on the bottom. Here's the thing. This place was SO DIRTY and broken down that I wanted to immediately leave. Had it not been so late (and my sister so tired), I would have insisted that she get her money back and we would have stayed in another hotel. Even the Skylark Shores (which is run down and tacky) was a huge jump above the Mallard House Inn. Claiming it was air-conditioned, the place actually just had one old, rattling unit in the back--which meant that the bed in the front (separated by a partial wall) was hot and uncomfortable. When my sister opened up the windows (and brought the old blinds up), the room was sheeted in floating dirt. It was DISGUSTING. I have asthma and this place was so dirty that I later had an asthma attack and had to go to urgent care. That's how dirty this place was. The bathroom was horrible. Pieces of caulking and flooring were TAPED to the makeshift shower stall. I couldn't believe my eyes. I littered the floor with towels, hoping that we wouldn't get athlete's foot. The "bed" in the front of the half cottage was a makeshift futon that was unfolded (which we were not told about when making our reservations). The hard, uncomfortable futon mattress was humped up where it crossed over a beam and then sloped down to the front. Whoever was unlucky enough to sleep there would slowly slide off all night. If you're interested in having a small, dirty fridge and microwave with a tangle of extension cords, this place is for you. Decades ago, someone had taped contact paper and placemats on all the furniture--I suppose this was an attempt to keep the surface of the furniture safe. Of course, this was furniture that would be hauled to the dump if you tried to donate it to the Goodwill... so putting a long strand of office tape on each side is kind of silly. The next day, I realized that I had accidentally left my funeral clothes in the broken down closet there. When I returned, the "housekeeper" was talking with the manager (a woman this time). I was shocked to find that there was a person who cleaned who worked there since the place was so unclean and unsafe. The manager walked me to a shed behind the hotel. My blouse and outfit was balled up and shoved into a plastic grocery bag and tossed on top of something else. I thought, "Really?" This was the best they could do. I took my balled up, rumpled clothes and drove back where I had to change for my grandfather's funeral. I was so upset, I cried. They were such awful people, it never occurred to them to allow me to change in my old hotel room. I'm actually contacting the department of public health to report this place. Wow.....I will NEVER stay here again. The rooms were old, run down, and a little dirty. They screwed up our reservation and had given our suite away, separated our family. Not extremely friendly. The Dock had NO electricity (which had been promised) and was falling apart. Not to mention bogged in with no ability to get your boat in and out. WAY too expensive! Definitely stay away! read more

My wife and I went here for 3 days and 2 nights this week as a mini-honeymoon. I say mini because our actual honeymoon is in August in Canada. This was a gift given to us by my dad on our wedding day. We choose Lakeport because the jet ski rentals were cheaper than Lake Berryessa. Anyways, so when we first drove in, I wasn't entirely impressed. It looked run down, but not ghetto, just not taken care of, not dirty though. Hard to explain. Also, the driveway is for one car at a time, and kind of comes upon you. As you pull in, there are "cottages" scattered about 15 feet apart, about 4 buildings with 4 rooms each. It is facing the lake, but we will get to that later. The lake looked pretty, the rooms looked rustic and older, but I just wanted to start drinking so whatever. We park and I get out to check in. The office looks like the cottages and is deperate need of repair. The first "turn off" occurs in the office. There was a lady, who I'm pretty sure I talked to before, and a guy on the computer who turned, looked at me, and turned back. They didn't greet me, they sort of stared at me. So I said I'm checking in. Now, my dad told me the room had a view of the lake. I pictured what most people would, a freckin' view of the lake. Well, I could SEE the lake, but it is not what people would consider a "view". There is one small window, perpendicular to the door of another room and facing their patio, facing the lake which is about 200 feet away. Okay, I don't consider this a view whatsoever, but again, whatever. So keep that in mind when you rent a room. There are two rooms with "views", but because the buildings are tucked back and in between two other hotels which are two stories, you have a 25 degree view of the lake. Anyways, on to the room itself. The room is what saved it, because it was comfortable, had a full kitchen and tv and table. The full kitchen had a small, but not mini, refridgerator, a small stove, sink and even pots, pans and utensils. Awesome. However, the refridgerator was off so my beer and food took awhile to get cold again which kind of bugged me. The kitchen was awesome either way. Kitty corner to the kitchen was the bed. It was a comfortable for two people, no more or less. The tv was in a big tv stand, had okay reception and turned off sometimes. The table was tucked away and kind of hard to sit in. Overall the room was nice and comfortable, clean and cozy, and nice to come back to after jet-skiing, which is at Disney's Watersports down Main Street which I will be reviewing soon. The one thing that got to me was the air conditioner. It was one of those that is stuck in the window. It cooled it down, but the door didn't have weather stripping so it took a the whole night to cool the whole place down. As far as security, I felt safe staying there at night. I never had any problems. Now the only problem with this place is their "lake view". The are tucked back and away so you don't get much of a view. They do not have a pool either, except a hot tub that we didn't go to because it was too hot. The do have a lawn area with chairs, and a dock that had an upper level which was cool to sit at during the sunset. It was really dirty though. Another thing, the lake has terrible algae problems. I'm not sure if it is just summer, but I did NOT go swimming. i didn't see anyone swimming either. It also made jet skiing annoying because I was constantly afraid of having to get off and pull out the algae from the air intake from under the jet ski. Not sure why it is called CLEAR lake. Anyways, overall I'd give Mallard House Inn 8 out of 10 stars. The only cons are the run down buildings, the "view", and the customer service. Not sure how much my specific room was, but I wouldn't pay anymore than 70-80 bucks for it. It was room 8 by the way. Make sure if you want a view, ask for FULL LAKE VIEW, not semi view, which is what we had. i would in fact stay here again, if given the choice. However, I would rather have stayed at the Skylark which seemed nicer. Good luck! read more

It was late and I was looking for a cheap, convenient place to stay. The Mallard House Inn exceeded my expectations. I can't remember the name of the gentleman that checked me in but he was super helpful, recommended some great restaurants and told me about some cool things to do in the area before leaving town the next day. I had a room without a kitchen unit (didn't need one) and was very comfortable. I like the cottage feel and the place was very quiet. If I'm in Lakeport again and need a room, I'll call this place first. read more

I know this place is not for everyone, but let me put in my two cents! I am a nurse who travels to Lakeport for classes at the local hospital every couple of years and have been coming to stay at The Mallard for a decade and a half. It is sweet and quaint BUT needs a TON of work--the previous owners were not able to keep up with all the repairs. I met the new owners (they also own the Anchorage Inn next door) who acquired this property two months ago. Already they are working, upgrading, making changes and trying to improve the premises indoors and out. It is going to take MONTHS before they can get things fixed (paint, light fixtures, floors, furniture decor is all going to be upgraded). They had a few rooms available and let me choose which one I wanted (after all these years I have my favorites), also offering a great rate next door which was very kind and generous--they were quite friendly and personable. But! I love this old place with the little cottages and though it isn't fancy and has seen better days, I am thrilled someone has taken over who is managing, involved and doing much needed repairs. It is clean and I had my own little kitchen, quiet with good WIFI and friendly staff. Don't expect much now but I have ever confidence when I return in two years "The Old Girl" will be back looking fresher and younger. All the cottages are different, so it depends on needs and what is available. They offer the pool and spa next door; there is a tri-level dock overlooking the lake. Restaurants steps away if needed. Tip: I always bring my own pillows, these are pretty flat. Rates seem reasonable. Non smoking, yay! The owners are very hands-on and appreciate feedback. I like when I have questions or needs, someone responds quickly and is sincere about helping. They no longer provide a breakfast basket with pastries so this should no longer be considered a "Bed and BREAKFAST" ( I do miss the treats!) read more

BEWARE of spiders EVERYWHERE including inside the rooms. This place is so dirty and unhealthy. The carpet makes my feet black. The floors in the bathroom were nasty. This is my first night here and I already want to leave. The dock is run down, I tripped on the screws and nails. I tried to enjoy the views of the lake on the dock and there were HUGE spiders everywhere, spider webs all over the chairs provided. I can't even believe this place is open. We decided to go to the hot tub to try and cheer us up but unfortunately there was bugs all over the edges of the tub we couldnt even relax. I would seriously rather sleep in my car. There is black hair all over our room, in the shower and inside our bed. There are black dots on the bed sheets after I cleaned off, they reappeared. I payed 100 $ a night for this place and I cant leave because its the only place available on this 4th of July weekend. :( read more

WHAT A DELIGHT! If I'd known, I would have added at least another day to my trip. This place is so charming. Friendly, helpful staff, unbeatable location for both scenery and convenience, beautiful, beautiful views. Nothing fancy, but everything you want. For us working class stiffs, this is a freaking spa resort for less than a hundred bucks a night. For real. I was traveling for work and I selected this place online hastily, mainly for the low price, so I was dumbstruck when I pulled in to discover charming bungalow cottages right on the lake. People with more discretionary income who stay at real spa resorts may bemoan the dated decor and appliances, the carpets due for a cleaning, the spotty wifi, the overbleached hot tub, the mismatched patio furniture. That's great, let them stay somewhere else and leave the Mallard House to us! I'll be looking for an excuse to come back to Lakeport so I can stay there again! read more

Stayed here for 2 nights. It is a charming little resort like something out of a fairy tale. Located right on the lake it has a dock and a pier. Of course, there are ducks and grebs too. There is a barbecue/picnic area with gas fired grills. They keep you in the propane. There is plenty of parking. Each cabin is unique and adorable. The cabins are small, but management has thought of everything you could possibly need. The cabin was spotless. The queen size bed was very comfortable. In the large closet was an extra wool blanket, an iron and ironing board and a space heater. The kitchen was complete with full fridge, electric oven, microwave, dishes, pots and pans, utensils and linens. There was a dining table with 2 chairs and, of course, the tv with free cable. The bathroom was full. Each cabin has a little porch with table and chairs. Flowers are everywhere. The lady manager was charming and easy going. I checked out an hour late - no worries. Oh, and it was very quiet and safe - 2 blocks from the police station. Overall, I wish I was still there. read more
