The first time I stopped by was on Saturday, 04-01-23 after receiving a few positive reviews about this being the place for good African food. I was disappointed that they weren't available due to roof issues because it meant that I'd have to cook. I returned on Saturday, 09-16-23. I called ahead and ordered banku and okra soup with tripe, donuts, and a side of jollof rice for someone. I can't speak on the rice, but the soup was good and filling. I wasn't a fan of the donuts. As a first-generation Ghanaian American who spent my formative years in that beautiful West African location, finding a good Ghanaian restaurant is paramount everywhere I live -- and even everywhere I visit, whenever possible. Mama Gee's has been my saving grace in Charlotte. Mama Gee's isn't a sit down restaurant. There's a small counter, a register, a fridge or two full of drinks, and a small opening that allows you to watch the cooks throw down Ghanaian jollof -- the best in Africa (sorry, my Nigerian and Senegalese homies). Anyway, the guy at the front is always super friendly. The food is cooked to order and their "red red" is absolutely, freaking fantastic. Same for their yam and tsoofie, their banku and fish and pretty much everything I've tried here. And one thing I love is that they have a lot of local Ghanaian drinks which really adds to the experience. Next up is trying their late night menu. Heck, I may even bargain with them and try to talk the price down just so I can feel even more at home. read more

What happened? The quality has gone down the drain. I was the only customer at around 2pm on a Thursday. I won't be back. I ordered take out the wakaye with beef and the jollof rice with chicken. The beef was Hard chewy and DRY the noddles were mushy. The sauce was flavorless. The chicken was hard. The jollof rice was dry as desert. The price listed in store is different from the price I was charged. Overpriced. I threw ALL the food away even my African husband said it was trash. I won't be back. Sorry not sorry. This was my first time visiting Mama Gee Sadly, the reviews were totally opposite of my experience. I called ahead. The gentleman said 45 minutes. However, once arrived we experienced many people coming in ordering right on the spot who walked out right away with their food because they were friends of the man at the counter. The customer service is very unprofessional. The Jollof rice was overcooked and smelled burnt and the chicken was very dry and had no flavor. The only thing that was halfway edible was the plantain. The guy at the counter was on the phone, some might say it's rude but I expect that from African or Jamaican restaurants idk.. normally it means the food is gonna slap. WOW, when i took the first bite, it just reminded me how much I've been missing out. I got the Waakye Chicken platter, and he allowed me to substitute my egg for more plantains. (I'm a plantain addict). I also purchased Bofrot (in Nigeria we call it Puff puff). I also got a side of fish for my mom. Assuming you are like me and love spicy foods, LISTEN TO ME, you MUST get the extra spicy pepper sauce to put on your rice. Yes it is extra But It is very mandatory and will take the flavors and food to the next level. It is very spicy but it's so worth it. I stumbled upon Mama Gee's after a Facebook Friend in MIAMI posted a video of a young lady eating fufu and spinach and I was intrigued. I had not had Ghanian food before and I HAD to experience it..... I've been in Charlotte over a decade and hadn't heard of Mama Gee's before, but I was excited about my new culinary adventure. I Googled the restaurant and found out you had to call ahead so I did that. I ordered the Spinach Egusi & Fufu. When I called the young man that took my order was pleasant and patient with me. When I went to pick it up the restaurant was clean and the young man (sorry I didn't get his name) was professional and courteous. He assumed correctly that I was not African, and offered me a spoon to eat the fufu..When I got home I first tried eating it with my hands like the girl in the video but I had to eventually let that dream go and use a spoon! lol ... The fufu and spinach was very tasty and I really enjoyed it ... My next Mama Gee's experience was the Waakye chicken... Again - the gentlemen in the restaurant were very friendly and and the restaurant was clean. I appreciate that they are practicing COVID safety protocols which are visible and easy to read. I am definitely going to be a repeat customer... The restaurant is take out - and I kinda like it because i can take my meal home to eat in the comfort of my home as I wish... I recently moved to Charlotte for school and I was feeling a little homesick, and one of my classmates was telling me that there was a local Ghanaian restaurant close by so we headed over here after our orientation. My friend had to call in ahead because it was a Saturday and they run out of food pretty quickly. I had jollof rice with tomato stew and chicken with a side of fried plantains, and I also had to get a bottle of Alvaro and Vita Milk just because. The food was amazing and the portions were really big, so it lasted me 2-3 days. The rice was really good and it definitely reminded me of my moms jollof rice which made it even better. A few things about this establishment: 1. You should definitely call ahead, especially on the weekends because they will run out of food. 2. It's not really a sit down place so your order it automatically gonna be for to-go. 3. There's not much parking. Overall, I will definitely be coming back here.
