The food was less than desirable. My partner was sick, and hoped to enjoy some delicious soup, similar to what he grew up with. I should've heeded the warning of the other reviews, but I thought I would give a small business a chance. I was absolutely wrong. My first clue should've been the lack of customers in the restaurant. My second clue should've been that 90 sanitation rating. My third clue should've been the lack of food in the chafing dishes upfront. My fourth clue should've been when I was charged more than the posted price for the soup (which came to $19.47). I ignored all of this just to support a small business. Beware. If I could have given zero stars I would have. I hope this place shuts down soon. It is a real waste of space. read more

First of all we asked if it was authentic African food & the guy said yes. We ordered Jollof rice! Everyone who knows Jollof knows how it's supposed to taste. I visited Samoha Restaurant yesterday and I must say the égusi sauce ( melon seeds sauce covered a fish cooked in a savory tomato sauce.) The flavors were rich and authentic. The beef is fried hard and then cover in a sauce. NO yuck! They give you every little sauce you may leave still hungry. I had the spinach stew which I enjoyed but not the meat. Ive ordered from them multiple times based on items listed on their menu just for them to send me whatever they want and think it's okay. So, I'm Cameroonian by way of being married to a Cameroonian and 43% by DNA. I know this food is Nigerian but I find that Nigeria being so close to Cameroon and being that my husband was almost born there, is my 2nd favorite country when it comes to African food. My daughter was at a salon a few miles away and someone mentioned this place because they were waiting on an order from here. I looked it up on yelp and though there were no pictures or detailed reviews, I gave it a shot. The place is clean, and laid out well with the food visible and mostly all dishes were labeled. The staff member was very attentive and answered all my questions and even let me sample the jollof, the egusi, tripe and spinach because I struggled to decide. Not all things can be sampled, it's not Costco or Sam's so don't expect a free meal. LOL! The jollof was okay, the tripe had a nice texture but too strong of a tomato flavor and the egusi needed maybe just a tad more oomph and pepper. But It's tough when you're used to a certain way and for me that's Cameroon style. But I decided on the suya which are seasoned beef skewers with a pepper powder blend that you sprinkle on and eat with the red onions that come with the order. The suya pepper is PERFECT! The beef was tender but still with a good chew to it. I also got the spinach soup with fufu and cow foot. She picked out two perfect pieces and it was cooked so well. Not too tough, not too soft. The spinach soup just needed a tad bit of salt which can be done easily if you prefer. It's always good to not over salt your food! The fufu was a good sharing size and it was done well. No complaints! I will definitely trek over to the other side of town for this because I don't think Ballantyne has any African restaurants. Or do they? I brought it home to eat and heated a plate up for my husband and he said it was really good and he really enjoyed it. The suya was $9.99 for 4 skewers The spinach soup which comes with either rice or fufu and your choice of meat (chicken, fish, beef, goat, tripe, cow foot or a combination) the goat and combo is a $2.00 up charge. So that meal costs $12.99. They do have lunch specials as well and sells wings and fried fish if you don't want to be as adventurous. Definitely check this place out. Thumbs up for me! As a veteran Nigerian food enthusiast, I enjoy coming to this spot as their food is fresh, flavorful, and delicious. The Jollof rice is cooked perfectly and has the right amount of spice, the plantains are not overcooked, and the versions stews you can choose from compliment the Jollof nicely (Goat, Beef, Hen, Tripe, and oxtail). Listen this is the best place to get fufu omg it was so good. They let you sample the food especially if your not used to it. They allow you to understand what your buying rather than rush you off like some foreign restaurants I've been in. I order got the fufu with the soup and chicken. For full discretion i am 100% Nigerian, and my mom is the best chef i know so i grade true and on a high level. Potato greens review: on a 1-5 scale (5 being zoewees level) is a 3.5. The greens are a bit too salty. I also felt ripped off bc my greens had big pieces of bone so i got less greens and less meat. The good thing i guess is that for $12.99 it comes with plantains unlike zoewees but overall, Zoewees is a real Liberian restaurant in comparison to this a Nigerian spot so i guess my expectations were too high. Food is Def not nasty, just not on par with zoewees. I've also tried the jollof rice combo (3.5 stars as well) and the rice in my opinion was too tomatoey and not as seasoned as to what I'm use to. I had the Crocker fish with Jollof rice and it was seasoned to perfection. *chef's kiss* if you're unfamiliar with African cuisine then I'll tell you this , except some type of spice. This has kind of become my go to spot when my other place is closed or if I Have a taste for something different- like tonight. So, I will just say I had their egusi for the first time tonight. The stewed meat was tender but still had a good chew to it . The snapper was okay in my opinion (I choose the stewed meat over it) but also had bones in it which is hit or miss for me . Some days I feel like bones in my fish (bones in fish is always better and fresher) but some days I don't feel like messing with the bones . The plantains were yummy (I ate mine and my friends). The MEAT PIES were 10 out of 10. Fresh , flaky , stuffed with meat and temperature hot. It needed nothing else and was absolutely perfect . I want to go back just for the meat pies . KEEP IN MIND: if you go here go early in the day . Alot of the seafood dishes I wanted to try they were all out of because they tend to sell faster in the day and they only have a certain amount out for freshness purposes. I settled on Samoha for no particular reason, other than it was kind of on the way to Ikea. I ordered the jollof with hen and plantain, and egusi with goat and pounded yam. These are my go to for Nigerian food when I am trying a new place--kind of like chicken tenders for chain restaurants. The jollof was perfect, the stew chicken could have had a little more of a kick to it, but I still ate the whole thing and was satisfied. Plantains were fried just right, I should have ordered more.
