Mama Mia seems like the popular local Italian eatery. This place was pretty full here on a Monday evening. Service was friendly. The food itself was average. This kids pizza, bread basket, and Caesar salad was great. The Capellini was somewhat bland though and the Linguini Pescadore had an unusual flavor (tastes like a bowl of marinated artichokes). Located on the right front side a a shopping center, lots of parking, if you are wheelchair bound you probably won't find a handicap space as they are scarce throughout the whole shopping center. They have inside and outside seating, inside ac temp I felt was perfect. The inside of the restaurant has a bar at the center with multiple TVs to watch sports. The inside looks classy with white table cloths, however I don't understand why they put white paper over the table cloths. IMO I f you are going to do white table cloths then do white table cloths and change them out between services. So this is the first time my pops, my wifey and I all ordered the same dish, which is honestly crazy because we all have such different tastes. We ordered calamari antipasto and for our main dish the salmon with capers, steamed veggies and substituted the pasta marinara with pasta Alfredo. Pops also got his usual non-alcoholic Heineken beer. After ordering we were given two small loads of bread, cut and quarters with a small plate of garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. The rundown: The bread looked and tasted commercial, store-bought and the dipping garlic, olive oil, and balsamic was way over powered with an old garlic flavor "I love garlic but this garlic was just not good. "We all had one small piece and stopped eating it" The calamari was definitely nowhere near the best I've had but it was good, quality wise. It struck me as though it was also prepackaged and frozen prior to cooking. The veggies were good but underseasoned "I dipped them in my pasta Alfredo sauce" The pasta Alfredo I must say was very tasty. The salmon was slightly overcooked but tasted good with the caper sauce they put on it, unfortunately the capers were flavorless. The server did a great job and paid attention to detail "he gets 5 stars" The price point "nearly $100" was IMO on the high side for the quality of food "or lack there of. My parents have lived in Gilroy for over 20 years and this was our first time dining at Mama Mia's. We came on a Friday night for dinner and got seated right away. We placed our orders- calamari appetizer, lasagna, calabrese, Mediterranean chicken, roasted pork chop tenderloin, and kids chicken tenders with meat sauce pasta. They gave us bread and oil/vinegar for the table. Service: We had been waiting for close to 45 minutes. Our waitress had only come by once while we were waiting, no update with our food. I asked if she could at least see if my toddler's order could be brought out first. I thought it would be common sense to accommodate little kids as I've never had a problem in other restaurants, but to my surprise, I guess it's not common sense after all. After I spoke up, my son's food magically appeared within 5 minutes or so. However, the rest of our order didn't arrive for another 20 minutes, which at this point, it had been over an hour since we placed our order. Mind you, the party behind us got seated after us (after our appetizer arrived) and got their meal way before us. Not sure what the hold up was. There was no update like, "I'm so sorry, your food should be coming out shortly" or "let me check in with the kitchen." Our waitress basically just dropped food off, dropped off boxes and our check. Didn't really do much more than that. Food: the calamari appetizer was smaller than I expected. All of our other orders were good though. Very generous portions. We had to take most of it home. They refused to honor a Mama Mia's gift certificate simply because the location that issued it has since closed. All four original locations are listed on the gift certificate. There is no indication anywhere that it must be used where it was purchased. They stated it was "too old" and they don't accept them "anymore". Service was great. We sat near the draft and they were nice to close the door. We got our drinks. Everything like clock work. I had the Lazy Man's cioppino. No crab but it's ok. Got mussels shtmrimp, calamari strips, and fish. The best part was the fish, so melt in your mouth, not overcooked. The broth had lots of fresh tomato. A tiny bit salty. I took the broth home to put more stuff in it. The garlic bread was hard but after you dip it in the soup, then it was ok. The lamb shank with mash potato was hugh. Had to take home half. The chicken pilaf was a big portion. Plated nicely. We got the best herb bread. Very soft and cut up in chunks. It went well with the olive oil and balsamic. Very enjoyable dinner. They asked if we wanted to sit in these bar tables. What is it with bar chairs and tables? We preferred regular tables and chairs. This place is huge. Indoors and outdoors. This must be a quiet night because we found parking space right outside. I realized that they wrapped up the soup to go with saran wrap so it doesn't spill. That was really thoughtful. First of all, I must admit that we were greeted and served with a lot of friendliness and efficiency, and the place was very clean. We were served a few rolls and a dipping sauce of olive oil, vinegar and herbs, which was good. But our entrees were disappointing. I would not go so far as to say they were "bad" or anything like that. But being Italian, I guess we are just used to how our family makes things like ravioli and gnocchi. Things are mostly a la carte, so we added salads to our meal at an extra cost. The gnocchi were kind of large, much larger than I have ever seen, and very, very soft. The sauce over them was curry, and while I was willing to try it, I have to be honest and say I am not a fan. The ravioli were also quite large, and may have been prepared with shredded, but very fine, meat. The marinara sauce was very chunky, not to my liking. I haven't been able to find a good, old-fashioned, traditional ravioli for decades. I wish restaurants would offer traditional fare, along with whatever "new inventions" they wish to experiment with. The music was kind of pop/modern that we did not care for, and the ambiance was not any particular ethnicity. The name does state, "Mediterranean" rather than "Italian", so I guess they can play whatever kind of music they want to. Oh, and they placed white paper on top of the white tablecloths! It reminded me of Marie Barone placing clear plastic over her living-room sofa. I was looking for a traditional Italian experience, so my bad. I am sure the place will succeed anyway. I ordered a meatball calzone and got a pepperoni calzone. I called the merchant and they argued with me. They told me, we sent a meatball....you can see from the picture that isnt what they sent. As I noted, we've been to this location several times and I've never written a review until now. Figured it was time to share my experience. I ordered my favorite meal Chicken Parmigiana and as usual it was delicious. I've had Chicken Parmigiana in many restaurants and have been to Italy 4 times! In my humble opinion the Chicken Parmigiana here at Mama Mia's Gilroy is the best I've had. Great ambiance, great service and great food. Can't ask for better than that. I shall return. my sister and i came here one afternoon before going to the gilroy outlets. it was not busy and we were able to be seated shortly after entering. they handed us a menu, gave us water, and then came back to let us order. we ordered two different pastas (pictured) and a parm garlic bread appetizer (not pictured). all of it was really good. we really liked the bread. my sister's fettuccine had a very rich cheese flavor which we liked. my pasta was also really good and it was a vegetarian option (i didn't add chicken or anything). i also had leftovers which i took home and let my friend try, she also really enjoyed it! the inside is nice and they have lots of tables. overall, nice restaurant in the gilroy area. read more

Love this place! I've been to both locations (Morgan Hill and Gilroy) in my opinion this is the better of the two. Most of the time I order for pick up/delivery and the food portions are VERY generous I definitely get bang for my buck! I really dislike having to leave a poor review for a local place but my meal and service were really bad tonight at Mama Mia's. I ordered a side salad with ranch and there was maybe a teaspoonful of dressing on the salad, however the greens and vegetables were very fresh. My entree was the smoked salmon with fettuccine and spinach in a dill cream sauce. The pasta was good - mostly al dente and nice and hot. The salmon was INEDIBLE SO salty! Literally could not eat it. I tried taking small pieces and incorporated that into a bite of pasta. Still waaayy too salty. I let the waiter know and he said that it was a "salt cured salmon, and you had to be ready for that"! Lol so funny. Be ready?! How exactly does one ready themselves to consume sodium at inedible levels? He offered no ideas or remedies. Additionally and further unfortunately the waiter was incredibly untrained. He rushed us, interrupted our ordering, served us only from the end of the table, so we had to awkwardly pass our own plates to their owner, slapped my wine down in the middle of the table with no direction as to who ordered it, and seemed to think he needed to clear our bread plates when the entrees were served. No water refills, no second glass of wine offered, had to ask for soda refills. I can't really hold this young man responsible for this lack of training, someone didn't ensure he was ready to provide service. The chef apparently doesn't taste his own food and neither does the manager or owner either. No plan to return here. read more

Server forgot us after seating us. After waiting a long time I had to grab another server to place our food order. Food was very bland. Even the costumers next to me were saying the same thing. Costumers and staff kept leaving the outside patio door open and I had to get up multiple times to close it. Very cold constant draft. I asked a staff member that was at the desk next to the door to please try to keep the door closed. She yes with a smile but didn't bother to do so even though she was stationed to stand at the desk next to it to welcome costumers in.
