It was not the food that was spectacular, it was our server Nicole that made dinner the best. Bread was good, Greek salad with chicken was very good and the pasta primavera was tasty. I love coming here for dinner, my family and I come here for birthday dinners and anniversary dinners. Ok that's a lie, we come more often than I noted. I hate a packed places. And they get fairly busy. But oh my good god thank you for Mama Mia's for the most delicious Italian dinners in all of Gilroy. They also have one in Morgan Hill. Yes, 2 stars after eating here about six times. Look, there isn't a really good sit-down restaurant in Gilroy that serves upstanding food. I ordered a salad once that had the plastic-food-service-hygiene-fingertip tossed nicely with my wilted radicchio. On another occasion, there was the cut off corner to the plastic bag of the soup they served me. NEED I SAY MORE? Why yes, let me continue. I ordered something basic, simple that I knew would be a testament to their 'Authentic (Autentico in Italian) meat ravioli'. Well, good thing Nob Hill is down the street...oh wait, they went to Safeway instead and picked up some Michelena's frozen rav's and some Prego and doctered it up with some hamburger meat, or ground sausage perhaps and then served that to me piping cold, I mean warm. Damn, I can make that myself after the kids have Tae Kwon Do and Baseball and we're eating by 9:00 p.m. And it costs like $75 less including a bottle of wine. Don't bother, make that one star. If you're in Gilroy and you're craving Italian food, this is the best place to come. I'm not saying it's the best Italian food you can get, because it's definitely not, but compared to the other mediocre Italian restaurants in town, this is your best bet. Some things to note... Bread is very good and dangerously filling if you stuff your face with it as much as I do. The capellini fresca has got a crapload of garlic. So much garlic, you will reek for days. The calamari is surprisingly decent. Sometimes it's better than other times though. The pizza is also pretty good and worth a try. Mama Mia's is nothing special, but it's good enough. This is the only Italian option in town, so I have been here often over the years. I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with Mama Mia's. I went in on Friday for the first time since the remodel and it looks great. I love that they have a bar that you can sit and have a beer and an appetizer. They seem to have good happy hour deals, too. The service has always been good in my opinion. Very friendly and attentive. Now on to the food. The pizza is 4 stars. It's my second favorite in town. The pasta dishes and entrees are hit and miss in my opinion hence the 3 star rating. I have had things that I loved and things that were just not good. So we went here last night for dinner and I will start off by saying the service is quite slow but very friendly and accommodating. Now the food was average for a big metropolitan area but this is Gilroy. We order the bruschetta which was excellent, 1/2 Mama's Masterpiece and 1/2 Church's Choice Pizza; which both could use more marina sauce. Well it's better than the Morgan Hill location but that's not saying much. On a scale, the food could be considered somewhere between "meh" and "it's good", depending on what you order. The pasta dishes are usually alright while meat dishes can sink below mediocre (hint: the Osso Bucco is dry, tough, and salty). The only thing you can always count on here is the pizza; it's really good, especially the Greek With the exception of the pizza you'll always be disappointed with the price to quality of food- especially with the price of the pasta dishes. However, the food is consistent and the waitstaff is usually on task and friendly. The Gilroy facility isn't as nice since they renovated; I feel like it's too open now with the new bar and it feels cold and uninviting. read more

I am disappointed..... took my 3 kids here along with their Grandpa to celebrate his 63rd birthday. Our waitress, Heather, seemed constantly annoyed and bothered with us like we were somehow privileged to be served by her. ( it was only 5 of us, 2 boys, 1 girl and two adults) She ignored my kids whenever they tried to order something and seemed annoyed even when I asked for something. We finally gave this place a try after a friend of Sicilian extraction vouched for their quality. We got take-out: lasagna for me and the MahiMahi kale salad for my wife. The salad was good, perhaps a 4.5 out of 5. The fish was perfect and the salad was crisp and generous. The kale and carrots could have benefited from a more piquant dressing but others might disagree. The lasagna, on the other hand, was simply fantastic. I view lasagna as the acid test for a restaurant, with far too few passing muster. This one was simply perfect, with tons of Italian sausage, a great flavorful bolognese sauce, perfect al dente noodles, and mounds of mozzarella, all of generous proportions. Too often you get a miserly cube of mushy pasta, bland sauce and a half inch smothering of bechamel that tastes like whipped spit. Not here! It's among the very best lasagnas I've had in several continents. We'll be back! read more

The worst part about Mama Mia's is that it's a local chain, and the one in Campbell is AMAZING. Campbell has really authentic, flavorful dishes that are rich and sinful and just delicious. Gilroy's is the worst, and we'd never, ever return. The food was bad - bland, poorly cooked, and we pushed it around the plate. The service was also very slow on a slow night. First time here as we just moved to town. Cute place with friendly staff. Service was good. Starter bread was hot and fresh, great dipping with the oil balsamic and garlic. Food overall was just OK. I had the supreme and I enjoyed it, the veggies could have been cut up smaller and it needed a little more overall flavor. My wife had the stuffed Rigatoni and did not like it, we both confirmed the cream sauce was grainy. My daughter had the make your own pasta with marinara and prawns, she said the prawns were very fishy which she is not use to since she typically has them in Monterey and they are fresher.The other kids had the fettuccine Alfredo which was OK, needed some salt and the chicken strips with pasta, she seemed to like it. The reason we won't go back is that we ordered 2 large milks and a small milk, first round of milk tasted like garlic, no exaggerating, the waitress brought out a fresh round of milk and although it didn't taste like garlic it just didn't taste good, we didn't drink more than a micro sip to test. We told the waitress the milk Didn't taste good and she obliged, when the check came we paid almost $10 for milk we didn't drink, I didn't have the energy in me to complain, it just sealed the fact that We won't return. One last negative, when you go to an Italian restaurant and eat dinner, you shouldn't have a UFC fight on in the dining room with people bleeding and beating each other, I thought it was kinda tasteless but that's just my opinion as much of this review is. I went to Mama Mia's a few months ago for a nice girls dinner with my roommates. I ordered the Ravioli Napolitano and was not happy with it. The "creamy Marsala" sauce was eh. I only ate a bit but was going to take it home (since I paid $19 for it). The young waiter took my plate along with my roommates and brought them back their togo containers. When I asked were mine was, he said that he threw it away. I was upset that he threw mine away but boxed up my roommates when we all obviously had large portions of the meal left. He said that he could get me another order but it would take 30 minutes to make. We had just paid the bill and I didn't want to take any longer. I walked out dissatisfied with my meal and the service. Won't be coming here anytime soon, would rather travel to Morgan Hill or San Jose to find decent Italian food. read more

I lived in Campbell and went to Mama Mia's often! I was thrilled when there was one here by my new home. The food is excellent but the menus do differ. While the drinks are good, it's sad that this restaurant doesn't carry the same calamari salad available at Mama Mia's and Campbell. I tried to Fashion my own calamari salad by ordering a Caesar salad with blue cheese dressing and a side of the fried calamari. Mama Mia's is a casual (mostly) Italian restaurant with a relatively large bar and has had a restaurant at this location for. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. They also offer outside dining but as this sits on a busy street it may not be very desirable. The food ranges from pretty good to ocasionally awful. I have had some rubber chicken and the red souce is rather mediocre. Since it is close and currently the only Italian in town we go occasionally with hope but often leave with the hmm should have cooked at home feeling. read more

This review is for our server Heather tonight. There was no lemon with our calamari appetizer so I requested lemon from the busser as well as more oil&balsamic vinegar for the bread and red chili pepper flakes. No big deal, I understand it gets busy and things slip a servers mind. Half way through our meal, I ordered a plate to-go and my son a drink. I'm done with my meal so she assumes my son is too but he was waiting to order a drink so he can continue eating because she tried to grab his plate. She asked if I asked the busser for a drink and I told her, "No, no ones been here since I asked him for the condiments before our food got dropped off". She insisted she's been around several times and I pointed out that she has but not to our table and was busy taking orders from the other tables. She said, that I should've interrupted. I'm not one to interrupt and holler from a distance, if she just did her job and checked up on us then we wouldn't have to wait so long. I despise her attitude not just towards me but from my observation towards another table next to me. She told them the fish wasn't fresh and her dislike for something shows in her face...that was definitely the truth because although we've dined here plenty of times, she made this dining experience twice as long. The wait and unpleasant tone, with her rude expressions. Also, I didn't appreciate her saying Thank you loudly in my ear as I passed by when she didn't get a response from me when she said have a good evening. Very poor service man at the front is very rude food was horrible ordered raviolis and it's was not homemade or fresh

I've been here twice and the first time it was good but the second time the food and service was horrible! We were seated right next to the server station where I felt they could hear our whole conversation, which I didn't mind. The reason I bring this up, is because I did not like my food because it was a whole bowl of sausage with barely any pasta! She must have heard me tell my boyfriend that I didn't like it because she purposely avoided our table and never once even checked in with me on how my food was! The bus boy took my plate and he seemed perplexed on why I had so much food left that I didn't want to eat so I told him I didn't like it and why. He was nice about it, but it isn't his responsibility to make guests happy, it is the servers! She would come and give us our check, take it, etc. and never once asked how everything was. I found this very rude. It is server 101 to make sure guests like the food! I said something to her to call her out on it so she knows it isn't okay to pull something like that. Not going back. Management if you are reading this the server has dark hair and was working on Monday 3/6 evening. Get rid of her. read more
