For $8, I had the caprese appetizer. Their unique twist is what I would call a "tomato soup" drizzle which was delicious! The tomatoes were fresh, huge slices of fresh mozz and it was well-seasoned with salt and basil (I opted for no EVOO). My husband had the $11 Low Country Chicken sandwich which was a very yummy combo of chicken, pimento cheese and tomatoes, served with a pickle spear. It had a flavor reminiscent of buffalo wings without the heat. Pretty darn good! We were definitely happy with our selections and I will not hesitate to order again if I see them out and about.

The chef cooks the oyster Rockefeller to order and I received it nice and hot. It was perfect, the cheese and Rockefeller topping did not overpower the oyster. They have only been operating for a month now, this was their third brewery appearance. For appetizers they have a buffalo chicken dip and pimento cheese nacho- talk about solid brewery apps! Most of their menu items are types of wraps. Their special was chicken fajita tacos (Cinco de Mayo celebration) and for dessert they had a crispy ice cream sandwich. One unique thing that I don't see many food trucks do, is they offer kids menu items as well! Again- it is just their third day- this could all be totally different once they are more established and have tried different things. I opted to get the ice cream sandwich, because I'm a total sucker for dessert. I ate this first. Two crispy shells with a cinnamon sugar mix and if I'm not wrong it possibly a second seasoning that had a little kick to it. Maybe it was a touch of cayenne? Definitely not strong or overpowering in spice, just a little something to make it interesting. In the middle was a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a scoop of chocolate ice cream. The vanilla was complimented by the cinnamon and the chocolate was complimented by whatever that other ingredient was. I was definitely a fan! The more I ate the more I wanted more! I also got the chicken fajita taco special. I should point out that if I didn't go for the food truck option at Smartmouth I was headed to my favorite taco spot in VB. Maybe it was the unintentional comparison of the authentic street taco from my favorite spot, but these tacos fell a little flat for me. Not letting it really affect my review, because I did eat dessert first and then I messed around taking pictures before getting to them. It might be a "it's not you, it's me" thing with the tacos- I'll own this one. The tacos were served with a side of corn on the cob. It had a lemon cilantro butter which was fantastic! I'll definitely be craving that corn again sometime! The prices were on the lower-side of average for the food truck scene in Hampton Roads. Prices are another thing that might change as they are in business longer. They were also extra friendly from the moment I stepped up to the truck! Offering me whatever I needed and even getting out of the truck to come ask me a question of convenience, not necessity. I know several spots that would have just shouted it or not even bothered. So far so good! I hope they keep popping up at Smartmouth VB so I can try more of their menu and see how they change things up as they get a few more months of operation behind them! Norfolk isn't known as a foodie destination, but based on this first restaurant, the food here is pretty good and worth a visit. My friend who lives in Norfolk recommended it, and it's in a lively commercial spot near where we stayed. Parking was easy in the lot, and even with no reservation, 6 people walking in on a Friday night, we got seated right away. There's a handwritten note on the menu saying chips and salsa is one complimentary basket per table, and since we split into two tables, we ended up with two, which worked out nicely. Good queso to me comes down to viscosity. The thinner it runs, the better, gloppy queso is no bueno. This one ran right off the chip like water, which is exactly what I want. We ordered it to share and demolished it within a few minutes. Most of my group ordered tacos, which come in a single meat type, three to an order. Everyone ordered a different meat type and then traded so each person ended up with one of each kind, a fun way to try more of the menu. The fish tacos were a highlight for them. I was the only one who went a different direction, getting the chicken fajitas, which I split with a friend since the portion was huge, sizzling hot, loaded with chicken, peppers, and onions. My one gripe is they only gave us three tortillas for that much meat, so the tortilla to filling ratio was off. We left extremely full, and pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the food was ($30-40 a person, even with each person having a drink). Service was fast and friendly the whole night, and paying at the end was quick too. Drink-wise, the Trash Can looked very intriguing with almost 5 different liquor options, but I ultimately played it safe with a Paloma. Two friends got margaritas, one of which came practically the size of my friend's head, others had beers. My only real complaint is the drinks run sweet. I thought the Paloma would be the least sweet option, but it was still quite sweet for my taste. The margarita friends also said their margaritas were oversalted, like the salt fell in instead of staying on the rim. Small gripes aside, this was a great spot and I'd absolutely go back next time I'm in Norfolk.

After we FINALLY received our drinks--which were all waters--and three small shots, the more experienced waitress essentially disappeared, leaving us with the clearly new and inexperienced server. I have no problem with someone being new; everyone has to learn. But if you're training a new employee, they should have support. We never received water refills, and the overall attentiveness simply wasn't there. The atmosphere didn't help either. There were flies around the dining area, and remodeling was being done, which definitely took away from the experience. Then came the bill. I HATE FEELING LIKE I PAID SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE ITS RHW WORSE FEELING I have absolutely no problem spending money to take my family out and enjoy a good meal. What bothered me was paying that bill and feeling like the only thing I was paying for was the opportunity to finally LEAVE. When the food is good but the service and atmosphere make you regret dining in, something is wrong. The food deserves credit--it really was good. But based on our overall experience, I couldn't recommend dining here. If I ever ordered from this restaurant again, it would probably be delivery or takeout. Good food shouldn't have to overcome bad service.

Then, the waiting... and waiting... and waiting... 45 minutes later (and we were 3rd in line to order), we finally got our food (they definitely need to prep ahead of time for the anticipated lines). It was NOT worth the wait and we were really disappointed. For $10 each, we got a ton of plain basmati rice, some black beans, the most tasteless, dry chicken, a little shredded lettuce and a couple of grape tomatoes. I definitely wouldn't seek out the brick and mortar location and, if they're on schedule at a brewery, would be eating at home first or finding another way to spend my time.
