Pizza burger with a side of potato chips.
    Dustin M. R.

Passing through Deshler one afternoon, my stomach reminded me that it was just past lunch right about the same time as my eyes spotted the Mama Roses sign on Main Street. Parking out front along the road, I entered the establishment and paused, not sure if I should seat myself, or wait. After a minute or two of uncomfortable waiting, the waitress who was helping the lone table of customers paused long enough to look up and ask me if I wanted carryout or to eat there. Once I indicated I was planning to dine in, she invited me to sit at the table of my choice. Soon after making myself at home at a booth along the wall, the waitress finished up with her other table and sauntered over to ask what I wanted to drink. When she returned with my Pepsi, I went ahead and ordered the pizza burger with chips. The restaurant was decorated in what I affectionally refer to as 'small town diner,' with tasteful pictures and food-type signs on the walls. The dining room was structured with a row of booths running along both walls, with tables and chairs down the middle. One item of note was just how meticulously clean the restaurant was. I mean, most mom-and-pop restaurants tend to be pretty clean, but Mama Roses was *spotless*! After a fairly short wait, my order was delivered to the table. While the pizza burger was piping hot, it was conspicuously missing the side of potato chips. When I asked the waitress about it, she looked puzzled, apologized, took my sandwich basket away ("hey, I wanted to eat that!" my gnawing stomach shouted), and immediately returned it with a double-handful of chips. Before walking away, she said they make the pizza sauce in house and told me to enjoy my meal. She was right, as the pizza burger had a great taste, with an especially delicious marinara sauce that was not overly salty, like what store-bought sauces tend to be like. Returning later with my bill, the waitress asked if I wanted a refill on my Pepsi, which I appreciated. However, before bringing my check, I was a little disappointed that she never asked if I wanted to try one of the many pieces of pie described on various signs around the restaurant. Maybe she thought my butt was already big enough, and she was trying to spare me from further embarrassing myself from the COVID-19 that I have already put on? Regardless I gave her the benefit of the doubt and left a 30% tip. PROS: very good food, reasonable prices, and a fastidiously clean dining room CONS: This is a minor quibble, but the waitress was not as overflowingly friendly as one might have expected given the fact that she had just three patrons in the entire restaurant. Overall I rate Mama Roses as being Very Good, and look forward to returning the next time I am in the area.

We went again on Saturday. WOW!…read more Started with a Martini for my dining partner and iced tea for me. Both were great. The waiter (Josh, a five-star waiter if ever there was one) really knows how to take care of his customers. He really knows the menu, can explain the dishes along with their components and what makes them unique and paces each course perfectly. He even asked if we were BOTH done before any dishes were removed from the table. Nothing looks worse than one person still eating while the rest of the table has no plates in front of them. We started with the roasted carrot salad. The carrots were perfectly roasted and chilled with and amazing tahini "paste" and radicchio, perfectly dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. OUTSTANDING!!! Seriously, this could have been my entire meal! The tahini paste is great, and I made it once while making a tahini dressing for roasted Brussels sprouts. Tahini naturally gets thick (paste like) when liquid is added. To make the paste, just stop adding liquid to it and stop mixing until it gets smooth again. Seriously, delicious. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel for our entrees. It comes with a really nice side salad consisting of mixed greens, dressed again with a very mild vinaigrette. My only quibble (and it's a really small one) is I would have liked the schnitzel to be a bit thinner. That said, it was perfectly cooked, not at all dry and the thickness is up to the creator of the dish. I don't think there's a "standard" for this (ha, ha - get it!). Great breading and very tasty. The dessert... Again, had to go with the sticky toffee pudding! If this is on the menu, there's no way I'm not going to order it. GOD, it's just a perfect ending to a great meal, well, that along with a pot of French Press coffee. All in all, the meal came to $108.00 excluding the tip. Expensive, but WORTH EVERY PENNY! I spent that much a few weeks ago (maybe more) on a really awful meal/experience at a different place. You'll have to read my old reviews to figure that one out! Anyway, this place treats their employees like they actually appreciate them. They took them on a cruise! Of all the restaurants I used to work at, the best thing I ever received was a shift meal or maybe a cold beer because I was still at the place cooking apps at 1:00 in the morning and the manager wanted to go home but felt bad because I couldn't leave. Thanks for the glass of Miller Lite draft, Mr. Chi-Chi's manager guy! Everyone in the place, from the servers to the hostesses, to the bus folks and the floor manager had smiles and a sense of graciousness and appreciation to each and every customer. Try to find that at any other restaurant in Toledo. The food is top notch, made with very unique recipes and techniques you're not going to find anywhere else. The dining room and restrooms (at least the men's) are clean. I never had to ask for a refill on my iced tea or water. New silverware was brought before each course was served. The old plates were removed from the table after the staff asked if it was OK to do so. Proper training in procedure and etiquette is obvious. Again, just a great meal in every way - 10 out of 10! Can't wait to go back.

We loved the Standard after visit #1. Then, somehow, a year and a half passed before we returned…read more The reason was location, and the reason was atmosphere, but mostly it was atmosphere. After visit #2, I'm not sure there will be a visit #3 anytime soon. The consensus among friends -- confirmed now by our own table -- is that everything is too heavy. The first few bites bring the oohs and the ahhs. By halfway through the plate, the ughs and the oofs begin. The menu reads as thoughtful and dialed in. Our table of four ordered very different entrees -- seafood, steak, pasta, salad -- and somehow every plate arrived at the same destination: rich, savory, dense. No acid. No brightness. And strangely, blue cheese and garlic had crept into every single bite, as if the kitchen could not bear to let a dish leave without them. A meal that should have pleased everyone left most of us with a mild remorse. I felt surprisingly ill for hours afterward -- not because anything was unsafe, not because it wasn't delicious, but because it was simply too much. Too rich. Too savory. The body, it turns out, asks for contrast, and we had not been given any. The service, on the other hand, is STILL outrageously good. Without question some of the best in the region -- better than nearly every higher-end room in town. But the atmosphere is stuffy, the food is one-note, and high quality is not the same thing as good execution. My wife's "medium plus" steak arrived extremely rare. My salmon was undercooked. At this price, that is inexcusable. Still -- the service. The service is something to behold.

Every single staff member from the hostess to the servers were so super sweet, friendly, and accommodating. We came during their 50th anniversary so they were a little busy but the wait was pretty short. Their buffet was so good. They had so much to choose from. A salad bar, different meat that was absolutely delicious, just a bunch of comfort food all in one place. How can you beat all you can eat comfort food?! The staff were on top of changing out all of the food when the trays were empty too. The servers even wear clothes from the time period and the restaurant itself is exactly like a barn which gives a great, beautiful rustic feel. Be sure to check out the little gift shop too!

We have greatly enjoyed National Conferences in US from Boston to San Francisco, and it is a joy to attend the Sons of American Revolution Conference at Sauder's Village in Archbold. Always something about hotel lobbies, fireplaces, and good friends that is satisfying. The Friday night buffet is BBQ, and following a week of Great Smokies's dining, we were eager to enjoy "German style" meals. Brisket was better than southern; pulled pork had no flavor; ribs were burned; great salad bar; very few veggies. Locals love this place and we recommend. Neat and different ambience. Servers are first rate. Large parking lot. Older couples are attracted to buffets.

It's open, there is a bar to your right as you enter and lots of seating to your right and front. Can eat at bar. We sat, mimosas and bloodies available. Or for that matter- whatever you can think of. They have scotch eggs swimming in a bowl of gravy... yes gravy... and it was delicious. Definitely a Mexican "flair" with lots of black beans, sauces, etc. I stuck with a Belt sandwich - nice and crispy bread with bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato. Friendly service and lots of value! Glad we found this spot since we are headed to Ohio a few times a year.

My friend ordered prime rib medium rare. The rib was served Medium to Medium well. Shanna took it away & brought a Médium rare one, which was much better. I almost forgot about the Horrible house salads she served us. She returned them & brought us the Cole slaw & Augratin potatoes. The mistakes were corrected, but totally changed our view of the Dark Horse. I hope improvements will be made!
