Mama Thai has great food great service and great atmosphere. They have never messed up a take out order and it is always hot and fresh. I think you should get some food at Mama Thai. read more

How does a Thai place mess up Pad Thai? It's the equivalent of a Chinese place messing up fried rice. Well Mama Thai managed to do it, and do it quite well. The noodles were dry and void of any flavor. The curries were extremely bland and watered down, not to mention very light on the selected protein. They also messed up our Thai iced tea order giving us a different drink altogether which we didn't realize until we brought the order home. And the kicker: they clearly shorted me on the change but I didn't bother asking for them to correct it while I was there bc at that point I just considered it as a tip. We were in Oak Park for the afternoon and turned to yelp for some ideas about Thai food. We looked at numerous reviews, and found that only Mama Thai was open on a late Sunday afternoon. So we headed there. Parking was a breeze and the storefront looked inviting. We were offered a table the moment we walked in and then ordered the most important item on any Thai menu (in our opinion) - Thai iced tea. It was delicious, coming in a tall frosted glass with the dark red tea on the bottom and cream on top, and a straw to mix it to perfection. I ordered the Pad Thai and my husband ordered the Pepper and Garlic beef. We decided to split an order of Pork Curry Fried Rice. Our food came very quickly and tasted wonderful. I've had Pad Thai in more restaurants than I can count and Mama's was among the best. My husband loved his entree, the spice level being just right and the fried eggplant surprising him at how good it was. The curry fried rice was great, having a dense, complex curry flavor and just the right stickiness. The ambience was peaceful, even as several more diners entered the restaurant. All in all, Mama Thai is a great place to get your Thai fix in Oak Park. We will definitely visit again the next time we're in the neighbor hood. read more

I am a Pad Thai fan but have a hard time finding what I consider to be a good version! I really like this place. I've had the chicken and shrimp. Many places, they come over-cooked but on each occasion, I've been happy. There is enough of a sauce so that the noodles aren't dry, not too sweet. Very good! I've also had the eggrolls which are pretty good. Once I get tired of this, I'll try something else! I haven't eaten in but did have an experience where there was no parking and someone came out to give me my food. I thought that was very considerate and good customer service. I've just moved back to Oak Park for the third time (what can I say, I like the place!) and I've known about Mama Thai since the first few weeks of my very first move several years ago. Back in the day it was the best Thai food in the village - delish and large portions and no more expensive than anyplace else. However - that's simply not the case any more. About 6 months ago I ordered from there while visiting a friend here. I was less than impressed with the quality of the food, and the prices seemed to have jumped up quite a bit. Last weekend the DH, my girlfriend and I ordered dinner and all three of us have simply decided that we just aren't going to ever order from there again. I ordered Pad Thai with extra Tofu - and what I got was mildly-flavored noodles and some bean-sprouts. Okay, there *was* a lot of tofu, but they charged me SIX DOLLARS for it! You can order *plain* Pad Thai for $8.95 - but to add any meat or tofu is an additional $3 - since I asked for "extra" - I got charged a total of $14.95 for a small-sized entree without any actual ingredients - there were no crushed peanuts, no shredded veggies - the sauce was minimal and a bit bland. Girlfriend's Pad Thai Chicken was pretty much the same. The only thing that was *more* disappointing was DH's BBQ Pork Noodle - it was if the noodles came from a package of ramen (not much flavor other than SALT) and the BBQ pork was a few chips of rather flavorless dry meat. He didn't even want to finish the meal (which is absolutely not his SOP), so we gave him the rest of the appetizers - Chicken Potstickers and Golden Crab - which were at least better than the entrees. I do love chicken potstickers :) The cost of this sub-par meal? FIFTY DOLLARS. Seriously. I knew I was going to miss some of the takeaway/delivery options when we left the city to come back to OP, but this is ridiculous! When has anyone *ever* paid $50 for Thai - unless you were ordering a TON of food??? But I do love my Pad Thai Tofu - so we'll now go through all the other places in the OP area and find someplace else to order from. If we can't find anything good, I'll have DH pick up from some of the great places in Chicago on his way home from work. We WILL NOT order from Mama Thai again. read more

As I've said before, I'm not big on Thai food. This is the best I've had. We got the appetizer sampler, which was great. It included 2 chicken satay, shumai, golden crab, pot sticker, shrimp in the blanket, and 1 egg roll. The golden crab is the BEST crab rangoon I have tasted. Small, intimate Thai restaurant in Oak Park; casual decor, like most storefront Thai places, maybe a cut above. The food was good, very traditional and very tasty. Service: the service was great at the beginning, but kind of shaky towards the end of the meal. We asked for our entrees to be wrapped, as we still had half left; and (partly our own faults) we realized that they had never brought them back to us after we were already in the car a couple of blocks away. Other than that, I would go back here; but I still feel that the best Thai in this area is still at Amarind's! read more

We typically carry out from this place, but not because it isn't an attractive restaurant. The service is very good, and so is the food. My favorite is the Kow Soy. It is a yummy combination of chicken, noodles, onions, cilantro and sweet/spicy sauce. There is no cow or soy in it as far as I can tell, go figure. Spicy Basil Chicken and Pad Thai are excellent. Potstickers and satay are among the appetizers we enjoy. read more

Mama Thai is the gold standard for thai food. If you have never had Thai before, then let Mama Thai set your expectations for what is good Thai food. I have visited this restaurant many times over the past few years but this is my first review. Upon walking in, you might find the decor, along with the paper tablecloths, to be a bit underwhelming. Do NOT let that stop you from taking a seat. I ordered shumai as an appetizer, followed by shrimp pad see ew for my entree and mango sticky rice for dessert. Overall, the meal was a bit on the sweet side (especially with the pineapple juice) but I tend to like my sweet & savory meals to weigh a bit more on the sweet side. The shumai was presented on a long, thin, rectangular plate along with a cup of of soy sauce. Those eight pieces were definitely a great way to start the meal. The Pad See Ew came next. The reason I consider Mama Thai the gold standard was that a few weeks ago, I ordered Pad See Ew from another restaurant and their noodles were bit al dente and too thick for my taste. Mama Thai gets the texture just right. The seasoning along with the texture make for a truly savory meal. Lastly, I indulged my sweet tooth with the Mango Sticky rice which was beautifully presented on a plate with sliced mangos and a sliced strawberry topping off a healthy serving of sweet sticky rice. The strawberry added more to the visuals than the actual taste. I preferred pairing each bite of the sticky rice with a mango instead of the strawberry. However, I imagine I would have a different experience if it were a farm fresh strawberry as opposed to the strawberry with a significantly whiter core. Nevertheless, it was delicious! I highly recommnend Mama Thai for the great food and attentive service. read more

STOP!!!! Don't go here unless you want to get sick! I asked the owner upon entrance if they use MSG. She responded with a firm "never." I trusted her. The food was just so-so. Ten minutes after we left I got a rash up my neck and on my face. My eyes were bloodshot, I had a sore throat and a pounding headache. This is what happens if I eat MSG. It had to be a substantial amount for me to get this sick. The next day I wrote a letter about what happened. She called me but at first said that they don't add MSG. After she asked what food we ordered she than said they use oyster sauce that has MSG in it. Excuse me, that means they use MSG. She told me she would tell her husband about me but I never heard from them again. Shame on them! read more

Maybe I'm missing something, but I was very underwhelmed by this place. Friend and I went for dinner. i ordered egg rolls for an appetizer, and chicken pad Thai. Friend ordered an app for her meal. Her app came out, followed by my pad Thai, followed by the egg rolls. Made no sense. The pad Thai was just blah. The chicken was dry and had zero flavor. The noodles were in one big lump, and had zero spice to them (and I'm a wimp when it comes to spicy food, so if I think it's bland, it must really be bland). Garnish was simply a lime wedge. - no peanuts, green onion or cilantro. There was just no flavor to the whole dish. The egg rolls were very tasty-crispy with a yummy dipping sauce. Maybe other dishes are better, but don't think I'll be back to find out. read more

A friend suggested this place for lunch and can I just say I loved it? It was very economical and you get lots of food during the lunch. A choice of starter (spring rolls were awesome, although the plum sauce was a bit thick), soup of the day and your lunch item for like 7 bucks!! I'm still dining as am writing this review because I'm so disappointed about these plain, tasteless, and sweet dishes. I had a spicy basil beef, it wasn't spicy. I had a tempura vegetable as an appetizer, but they didn't have the sauce and it was extra greasy. The pad-Thai was so sweet that I had a toothache. The beef broccoli gravy looked like Popeyes's chicken gravy sauce; which Popeyes gravy taste better. The service was horrible!! My coworkers and I order mama thai probably at least once a week. Their food is really good but it is unfortunate that their cashier is so extremely rude. I can tell she is new because in these past 2 years ive never had a problem till now. The past two times i have ordered the cashier always interrupts me while im talking. Today she told me she was going to charge me the delivery twice because she could only do 2 orders at a time and i had 4 orders. Two of our orders were going to have a total of 12 each and we were going to pay with a card and she said no because the minimum was 15. I told her that i didnt have cash with me and she right away said bye. Horrible customer service. I will not be ordering from this restaurant again. read more

After an event in the city, my family and I were on our way home and decided to stop in Forest Park to get some dinner. We were actually on our way to a different Thai restaurant when we spotted Mama Thai's and decided to check it out. It was a good move. =) First of all, as new parents, we are still getting used to bringing a baby (8 months old) into a restaurant. We don't want to bother other patrons (even though our baby is REALLY good a restaurants and doesn't cry) so generally speaking, we avoid going anywhere "nice" so that we can enjoy dinner without stressing out that we are bothering someone and so can everyone else. The staff was so very welcoming to us having the baby and even stopped by a couple of times to see if they could get us something to feed the baby even if it wasn't on the menu which I thought was awfully nice. The atmosphere of the place was really nice too. Not too fancy and not too casual. Food came out REALLY quick. I think that we waited maybe 5 mins for our appetizer (crab rangoon) and about a total of less than 15 mins for our dinner. The food was outstanding! Service was great too. I'm not sure who our actual waitress was though, we had 3 girls coming back and forth to our table to see the baby and also to see if we needed anything else but it wasn't gratuitous where I was getting annoyed that they were stopping by.... Just "attentive." We eat Thai a lot and this was one of the better restaurants that we have been to. Prices were reasonable too. I know that Yelp gives it $$ for the pricing but we had an appeizer, drinks, pad thai, another noodle dish (sorry I forgot what the other one was) and the total came out to $35 and a few cents. I've paid MUCH more for worse food and terrible service. If you are in Forest Park, give it a try. =) read more

I was surprised this place wasnt more crowded on a Saturday night because it is fantastic! The hours stink (open til 10) but that's OK. We shared Mongolian beef and pad woonsen with chicken. Both were flavorful and the meat was tender. I only wish it was a little more spicy. All the noodle or rice dishes come with your choice of meat, tofu or more veggies so anyone can find something they like. The portions are decent and the prices are awesome. When I moved up to Oak Park, the first Thai restaurant the boyfriend and I tried was Mama Thai. I was not impressed then finding it relatively average but apparently failed to ever give it the 3 star rating that I thought it deserved. Fast forward 2 years to tonight when I was really wanting thai food but was getting tired of the fact that most of the thai restaurants in Oak Park vicinity served their dishes with american broccoli. Because I knew that Mama Thai actually used chinese broccoli, and because I discovered that they do online orders - my favorite!!! - I decided to give this place another shot. I'm sorry I did. Here's the run down of my experience: Food ordered: pad see ewe with beef, panang curry extra spicy, potstickers and vietnamese spring rolls. Cost: $45 with delivery charge and tip - YIKES. I could have gotten delicious Sen Sushi for the same price, and I consider that to be a bit of a splurge meal. This place is significantly more expensive than other places in the area as evidenced by $7.50 spring rolls and $6.50 potstickers. If this meal was solid, the price would be totally worth it. Sadly, I cannot say that the experience was worth the money spent. Delivery time: 1 hr. --Time we actually received our food: 1hr20 minutes later. Condition of food upon pulling it out of the bag: --The spring rolls were cold, so that's a good thing. Unfortunately, so were the potstickers and the panang. The curry wasn't just luke warm; it was as if they had pulled an already portioned container of curry from the fridge and subsequently failed to heat it up before packing the order. The potstickers were clearly cold from having sat for a while. Only the pad see ewe was actually warm. Condition of food after having eaten it: --The potstickers tasted pre-made, like something I could grab from dominick's where I could get a package of 20 for the price I paid for 6. --The spring rolls were poorly rolled and the lettuce or bean sprouts inside tasted dirty. Side note complaint: if you're going to call something a vietnamese spring roll, where the hell was my mint or at least some comparable herb? --The panang was the best dish, and they did add some heat as I requested. It was just bland compared to other panangs I have had. It was a solid three star dish tops. --The Pad see ewe - the broccoli was great as was the beef and the egg. My issue centers on the noodles that accompanied the dish. Based upon their limpness, they seemed like they were added to a stir fry dish after the fact instead of being pan fried together. --The rice: some of the better rice I've had in the Oak Park and surrounding area. I was actually shocked by how great I thought it was. Unfortunately, good steamed rice does not save this place from losing a star from the 3 stars I would have given this place 2 years ago had I been diligent enough in my yelping duties to have reviewed it. I love the option of delivery on days when I'm just exhausted and don't want to have to go out, but if your restaurant cannot handle delivery without sacrificing the integrity of the food, don't do it. read more

This used to be my favorite Thai restaurant in the suburbs. They had the best Thai ice tea at one time and it was so good you would want another. This time it was so strong we had to ask for more cream. Also the shu my was tasteless and the panang curry was peanut sauce and rice for $12. I ordered Padthai and potstickers. It was good, the only thing that I didn't like was the potsticker sauce it was super sweet.

I'm used to ordering Tom Yum soup as a healthful option. It was not tasty here. Couldn't taste the lemongrass in it and it was greasy. The egg rolls were okay as were the dumplings. My local grocery store (in Houston) has tastier fresh dumplings. I'll have to agree with other diners. This place is just okay. read more

Yes I finally found a good Thai restaurant in the OPRF area! I've been reading reviews for good Thai in the area and have avoided most based off of Yelp. I tried Mama Thai as a suggestion from friends. I ordered delivery which came within the hour for a busy Sat. Night. Basil chicken, veggie egg rolls, brown rice, green tea ice cream were all delicious. My only small complaint is the menu stated it was spicy so I asked for medium spicy only to end up with zero spice at all. That's ok-next time I will just ask for hot sauce on the side. After a few friends talked it up as one of their favourite Thai places, I figured I'd have to give it a shot. The first time I had Mama Thai, I was less than impressed. Granted, it was take-out and it sat for quite a while before we dug in, but what we got was uninspiring. The packaging for the take-out didn't keep the food hot for long, the flavour was minimal, the noodles were overcooked, and the tasters were greasy. I was set in thinking that was it, no second chance needed. The friends that talked up the place were surprised by this experience, but couldn't say much since they had only ever eaten in the restaurant. I was talked into giving Mama Thai another chance and I'm very glad I did! The restaurant is open and cozy with a minimalist feel, the staff is friendly and helpful and the food was served fast! My friend and I split an order of the Golden Crab (which was delicious and nicely seasoned), the Pad See Eiw (lots of meat and a generous serving of chinese broccoli) and the Roast Duck Noodle (not up to par with the rest of the meal, it was lacking in flavour and was cold). I'll gladly be back and try other dishes off the menu, the plus being it's close by and parking is easy. read more

I have to say I love this place!!! I found this resturant by word of mouth and have never been to another place since. The food is always fresh and the prices are great. My son is very picky and I took him out on a mother son outing and to my amazment he loved it. We shared the calamari which the sweet and sour sauce is awesome and had the pad thai. Needless to say my son eagerly said he wanted to take the left overs, which he never does!!! If a pick 9 year old loves the food you know it has to be good!! read more

Mama Thai is the second Thai place we have visited since moving to Oak Park. This one is WAYYYYYY better then the first. The food was good. If I was rating on food alone I would probably give it 4 stars. The service on the other hand is lacking. Our waitress only brought out 3 of the 4 meals and walked away without saying a word. I flagged her down a couple minutes later and she said the fourth meal was on its way. Aghh. Would have been nice to know that originally. We will be visiting Mama Thai's again though. Weak. My girlfriend and I came craving good soups and authentic flavors. All we got was out of season supermarket vegetables, over cooked rice noodles and cloudy unbalanced soups.
