I have been meaning to try this location for the longest and thanks to my dear husband, he picked up some of these delicious goods for dinner! I'm pleasantly surprised and pleased with these empanadas. Generally, anywhere we have gone to order empanadas comes with a wait but it's understandable since it's freshly fried. But when you want empanadas, it's hard not to want it right then and there as you place the order! I would only get it from here if it's a short line because I'll be too anxious to eat it right away. We tried the beef, chicken and hawaiian. Really liked all three with beef being my absolute favorite. Well flavored, stuffed with plenty of filling and loved the potato mix in there. We've been coming here for years, the food and service were always spot on. Its been awhile since we've been here, the empanadas are still good but the service is horrible now. The female cashier in particular is nasty and rude to anyone that isn't Hispanic from what I witnessed. I was actually shocked at the way she treated a few customers that ordered after we did. One lady ordered 24 empanadas and only received 10 sauce cups. She asked why she only received 10 when a sign clearly stated "1 sauce for every 2 empanadas". The cashier said that she can purchase more for 25 cents each, take it or leave it. The lady requested a refund and the cashier refused and told her to leave. Another lady ordered 15 empanadas was given 6 sauce cups but she bought 8 more. She was treated in a rude manner also. A young man ordered 12 empanadas and he was given 10 sauce cups. The women were not hispanic and the man was, this is not the way to run a business or treat customers. The cashier wasn't rude to us but my daughter looks hispanic but isnt. The health department needs to pay a visit to this place because where another employee was cooking the empanadas would not pass inspection. The young man wasnt wearing gloves or a hair net and the cooking area was cluttered and not clean at all. He dropped a few empanadas onto the floor, he picked them up and placed on a table by the bags instead of throwing them away. After I saw that, I watched him closely to make sure he didnt drop our order or placed the dropped empanadas in our box. Years ago an older lady was the cashier. She was so engaging, friendly, very helpful and kind to everyone that came to the stand for empanadas. The owner needs to bring this lady back to teach the nasty rude cashier how to do her job. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because i enjoy the empanadas. However, the service is HORRIBLE with one of the cashiers. I've come here different day at different hours, so I've interacted with different ones. But the one that is normally there on weekdays at around 2:30 - 3:30 is so rude! I've seen her being rude to other people. About two weeks ago she was so impatient with an elderly man asking simple questions about the menu. Today I got that attitude from her. I ordered 2 empanadas, a soda, and an extra sauce ( they charge for them, ok no problem i understand ) my total came out to 6 dollars and some change. I had 5 singles and a 10 dollar bill. Then looks at me and says " no no i can't take this bill, so you have another one? " I tell her I don't, and she tells me in the worst attitude ever " IM NOT TAKING THIS " so I ask her, " okay so how am i supposed to pay? The bill was in perfect condition, because i used it afterwards at the train station and they received it without a problem. This location is quite busy and can get crowded easily because it's a very small space, no sitting area - Only a handful of people can be inside and eat along the wall. But, the service is fast and the empanadas come out nice and warm. I came here twice in one day and tried 4 different flavors of empanadas. I was quite impressed by the variety of flavors they offered and happy to see that the prices of the empanadas were all around $1-$3. They have 50 different types of empanadas - Savory and sweet. When I came here in the morning, I selected the Cheese Steak empanada and Bravas Arequipa Y Queso, which consisted of figs, caramel, and cheese. After I ordered, I checked my receipt and saw that the lady at the counter had put the wrong sweet empanada order. When I let her know, she replied that she already put the order in, insinuating that it cannot be changed. So, I had to repeat myself and clarify that I wanted what I actually ordered. In the end, I got the right empanada but she was quite rude about changing the mistake that she made. Both the empanadas were yummy. The Cheese Steak was pretty good- Plenty of (cheddar cheese) cheesy goodness and the meat was tasty. There were also some onions and peppers in it but not that much of it. The sweet empanada had a nice crispy shell and it was sprinkled lightly with powdered sugar. It was delicious and the fig, caramel, sweet cheese complemented one another well. The fig was wonderfully tender and delicious. However, the empanada was a bit too sweet. I had 2 empanadas: 1 chicken and 1 beef, which came with a drink. At first, I picked a soda, but then my friend asked if she could have coffee and they allowed it so I asked if I could get coffee as well and the person at the counter graciously let me get the coffee instead. I love this place and I have an addiction. This place is within walking distance to home and it means that whenever I have a hankering, it's a quick walk away. I usually get the queso on wheat, pizza, cheese on corn, spinach and cheese, and my husband likes the broccoli and cheese as well. Friends that we've gone with here like the rice and beans one, too. The mozzarepa is another fave, but I really want to try their normal arepa con queso, but last time they were sold out. Their delivery hours also vary, and sometimes they don't have their delivery driver there so they can't deliver. I want to kick myself for never trying these bad boys until recently! I highly recommend Mama's if you're looking for a meal under $10 (more like $6-8) or a quick snack. Mama's offers two types: the standard corn flour empanadas and wheat flour empanadas which are more like patties/calzones. Here are my top 3 choices: #1 beef (corn flour) - A mix of shredded and mashed potatoes. Very hearty and traditional. Try this one first. #2 figs, caramel And cheese (wheat) - Yes, I know sounds gross at first but think slightly salty gooey filling instead of your ordinary cheese. This plus the the sweetness from the fig+caramel, with additional sweetness from the powdered sugar. Divine. I got everyone hooked on this! #3 biagra (wheat) - Shrimp, scallops, and "crab" stew type filling. Not fishy at all. I actually would like to try this with the corn flour. The most expensive empanada on the list. Others that I recommend are: cheese steak chicken breakfast - bacon, eggs, cheese Not so much: cuban chili beef So, I always promise myself to try the other flavors but I always end up getting the beef, figs, biagra, and the cheese steak. I will try the hawaiian next time since a man came in and ordered 10 to go last time I was there. Must be really good! Get all the sauces: mild sauce - "red" sour/tangy; a mix of tabasco and liquid salsa green hot sauce - "green" ketchup mayo Try them out and see what you like. The only con I came across was that the prices vary by location. I went to another location and the beef empanada cost $1 (I think) while the one here cost $1.60. Summary: Empanadas is like the Spanish version of a dumpling but with many different varieties. I ordered the egg and sausage, pork, Italian sausage, and a polish empanada. They were all great. All the sausages didn't taste the same so it gave you a variety of flavors. The egg and sausage and the polish are the best ones that I like. Located steps away from Queens Center, this hole in the wall has no seating, no AC and no perks other than the piping hot food, namely empanadas. It's one of the busiest locations with many shopper and locals dropping by to pick up empanadas to go and while the prices have crept up in the past few years, it's still great bang for your buck with most empanadas ranging from $1.50 to $2.50. I have yet to try their other hot food but I can imagine it being difficult to eat as the only place to eat would be standing on one of their counters. Service is fast and a bit brusque but does back up if it gets crowded because of limited fryers/oven space. My favorite is definitely the chicken parmigiana empanada with the crispy exterior and wonderful cheesy saucy chicken-y goodness inside but for a healthier option, try the baked wheat empanadas. Every two empanadas comes with a choice of red or green chili sauce and additional sauces are 25 cents each. Whichever option you choose, rest assured that most of their options are under $1.50 - $1.75 each. They also offer cheap combo meals. While I am not a fan of the corn flour empanadas, I do enjoy the white flour patties. The taste of the corn flour I simply find too overpowering, and the actual patty seems to taste like a giant Frito to me. My boyfriend, however, favors the corn flour empanadas, so it is really just a matter of personal taste. You have to give them all a try!
