It's been awhile since I ate in a restaurant with live music. Mari, the songstress at Matiz made our late lunch there a special and memorable outing. We greatly enjoyed her song choices in English and Spanish as well as her lovely voice. For Appetizers, we ordered chicken quesadilla and ripe plantains which were yummy. I was super hungry and ate the hot plantains too quickly and burned the roof of my mouth. My bad. I had the avocado green salad with shrimp and mango and pineapple which was huge, healthy and tasty. My dining companion ordered the steak and also enjoyed it. We took home the Lomo Saltado for the family. Service was friendly and efficient. This is one of our regular lunch spots in the area. I always get the chicken fajitas--they're my go-to, and I haven't felt the need to try anything else because they hit the spot every time. The spicy hot sauce they have is so good--honestly, I haven't found anything like it at other nearby places. The ambience is cute, and the music is usually on point. It used to take a while to get our food, which was a bit of a pain during lunch breaks, but the last couple of times I went with my coworkers, service was noticeably faster--definitely a plus. I ordered the grilled pork chop in lemon sauce which turned out to be a a dry pork chop sautéed in a brown sauce with a touch of lemon. The woman behind the bar looked at the dish and had to check with the chef to confirm I was served the correct dish. The waiter finally appeared and I showed him a picture of the dish posted on their website. He agreed it looked like a different dish and walked away. We walked by this place and stopped because the decor was very beautiful and it was spanish food. We were greeted and sat pretty quickly which was nice. We ordered our food which we genuinely forgot the names of the dishes because we both did not like the food. I believe mine was passionfruit and mango pork.. We werent told the food would take an hour to arrive which was disappointing. Grateful the manager gave us complimentary chips. After an hour of waiting and receiving our food, the sauce did not compliment the pork. The dish wasn't good and my boyfriend agreed. My boyfriend said his was okay but the beans tasted a bit burnt. I came here for lunch on a Saturday with a friend and was so happy that we did. The drinks are delicious and they don't skimp on the alcohol. The food was delicious. We started with the tostones topped with guacamole, shredded beef and chicken. The portion was generous and plenty to share. For my entree I went with the special of the day Pura Vida. This is a Costa Rican dish which was so delicious I still think about it. The portion was huge and I took half home. We shared the guava empanadas for dessert and they were good but didn't blow me away. Cute cozy setting, staff was incredibly friendly. Drinks were good. My only bit of criticism would be the amount of time it took to get our food which was close to an hour and no update on our order, but I have to be completely honest, it was worth the weight as the food was really delicious. I was pleasantly surprised being that it was my first visit. I also appreciate it the portions of food which weren't greatly exaggerated as of the places where they give you Flintstones sized steaks. Ceviche was a total disappointment. Why was the liquid yellow, sweet & tart tasting rather than spicy?? Just cuz it had chilled shrimp in it, doesn't mean it's a ceviche! I have been to Spain, Mexico, D.R. & P.R. to know what authentic ceviche is, this ain't it. The guacamole was too tiny of a portion. Waiter could not get one of my friend's drink order correct. Asked the waiter 3x for a shot of gin and some salt. Not sure why that was so hard to understand or maybe it was a language barrier?? At least the cocktails were good (strong too!). It's one of the best restaurants off Queens Blvd in Forest Hills. I have been going there regularly since the pandemic. I appreciate the many tasty food options and the hospitality. I feel "at home" here, like meeting my neighborhood friends for lunch, brunch, or dinner. It's always a great time. I've had their delicious chicken quesadilla, empanadas, arepas, tacos, pabellon criollo, salmon tropical, mofongo with pork cracking, and various flavored frozen margaritas. I probably missed a few more dishes I've loved and tried. There are so many choices in Forest Hills. To be fairly honest, the gentleman and woman taking orders seem and sound incredibly nice + understanding, but: -Messed up the order 2x, first wrong drinks, then wrong food lol (I may be wrong, but it is under my belief that waiters are drunk! I hope it serves them well. - sangria PITCHER was 80% ice hahaha. We had 5 tiny cups from the pitcher! I had an incredible time outdoor dining here recently. The table set up was super cute and the service was very good. Outside of that the menu is amazing! We didn't order the drinks, but they did look incredible. We ordered the mango ceviche as an app- it came in this super cute martini glass with plantain chips and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were so on point. Next we shared the churrasco steak which came with this cheesy potato and spinach. I thought the spinach was over salted but the steak itself was divine.
