I finally made it to Matiz after bookmarking it a while back. Most of the reviews were positive, so expectations were high and for the most part, it delivered. It was pretty packed on a Sunday afternoon (Father's Day), but the service was still solid. We ordered the Papitas del Campo, the Bandeja Matiz, and the Lomo Saltado to share. Everything came out flavorful. Their house hot sauce? Insanely spicy in a good way, but definitely not for the faint of heart. The Bandeja Matiz was generous and filling. The steak in the Colombian breakfast was on the salty side, and the sausage was a bit too crispy for my taste, but otherwise, the food hit the spot. Almost two years ago I had an early dinner reunion with my co-chair during my public health days. There was a generous portion of food and everything tasted good. The happy hour white sangria was strong yet refreshing. The guacamole was beautifully presented with a combination of tortilla chips and plantains. My friend got the grilled chicken and avocado salad which was huge. I ordered the Mofongo vegetarian which was huge. I ate a portion of it and took the rest of it home for lunch the next day. Service was on point (what helped was my friend speaking Spanish to all the staff). Ambiance is a cute and can be potentially a neighborhood gem. They tell me they stopped regularly because of the positive staff and friendly owners. Checking out the food was delicious with all of us sharing around. The steak was delicious and excellent in terms of seasoning. My Mofongo was delicious and the texture was amazingly on point. It's been awhile since I ate in a restaurant with live music. Mari, the songstress at Matiz made our late lunch there a special and memorable outing. We greatly enjoyed her song choices in English and Spanish as well as her lovely voice. For Appetizers, we ordered chicken quesadilla and ripe plantains which were yummy. I was super hungry and ate the hot plantains too quickly and burned the roof of my mouth. My bad. I had the avocado green salad with shrimp and mango and pineapple which was huge, healthy and tasty. My dining companion ordered the steak and also enjoyed it. We took home the Lomo Saltado for the family. Service was friendly and efficient. The spicy hot sauce they have is so good--honestly, I haven't found anything like it at other nearby places. The ambience is cute, and the music is usually on point. Cute cozy setting, staff was incredibly friendly. Drinks were good. My only bit of criticism would be the amount of time it took to get our food which was close to an hour and no update on our order, but I have to be completely honest, it was worth the weight as the food was really delicious. I was pleasantly surprised being that it was my first visit. I also appreciate it the portions of food which weren't greatly exaggerated as of the places where they give you Flintstones sized steaks. It's one of the best restaurants off Queens Blvd in Forest Hills. I have been going there regularly since the pandemic. I appreciate the many tasty food options and the hospitality. I feel "at home" here, like meeting my neighborhood friends for lunch, brunch, or dinner. It's always a great time. I've had their delicious chicken quesadilla, empanadas, arepas, tacos, pabellon criollo, salmon tropical, mofongo with pork cracking, and various flavored frozen margaritas. I had an incredible time outdoor dining here recently. The table set up was super cute and the service was very good. Outside of that the menu is amazing! We didn't order the drinks, but they did look incredible. We ordered the mango ceviche as an app- it came in this super cute martini glass with plantain chips and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were so on point. Next we shared the churrasco steak which came with this cheesy potato and spinach. I thought the spinach was over salted but the steak itself was divine.
