As new residents of the area, we were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed with Mama's Pizza in Matthews. The atmosphere was relaxed with pleasant music playing at a volume so low you could have conversations. And the food...absolutely delicious and abundant servings. We took home enough for 2 meals. Don't forget to order the garlic knots. Big enough to make a sandwich! ​Highly recommend Mama's Pizza. Our waiter, Axel, was courteous and attentive and very pleasant. Went to Mamma's for my wife's bday dinner because we know there food and service is outstanding. We called ahead when we were 20 mins. away and they agreed to hold our table. We got there and were immediately sat. One server was taking care of the entire front of the house including bar tending. She was hustling and still provided great service. My wife ordered the Chicken Parm entree, i order Chicken Picatta over angel hair, Katy ordered Baked Ziti, Brody ordered a traditional Boli, and Karlea and Piper split a Chicken Basil Pesto Pizza. Our server unintentionally made an extra entree and asked us if we wanted it. It was ravioli Alfredo and we split it up between my daughters and wife. My son ordered a traditional boli which was large that came with a bowl of red sauce. Their red sauce is outstanding! Halfway through he asked for more red sauce and she delivered a new bowl quickly. The pizza here is very, very delicious. One of the few places here where I can still get a nice thin crust pizza done right. The pizza and local convenience is the only reason we came here a few times. For the quality of the pizza, I still consider it a great value compared to other "social media trendy" but highly overpriced, overrated places. The environment can be nice, especially with the "night light" lamps they put on the table, music is not overwhelmingly loud or obnoxious. The white tablecloth is a nice touch. The chairs are decent. However, the wait can be very long, even if not busy. We've been here at least 4 times on various days and times (weekdays, late afternoons, early evenings, weekends, etc.) and we typically wait about 40+ minutes or so for the food to be ready. Even when there's only 2-3 other customers around, it takes about 25-30 minutes after ordering for the food to receive it. The last time we were here, it took more than 1 hour for the food to be ready. The service staff is extremely nice. However, there's still something "off" about this place and them. For example, the bar worker is expected to not only pour drinks at the bar, but also attend to non-bar restaurant guests. This is kind of weird. This place seems to give more attention and priority to bar customers and alcohol drinking "buddies" of the bar staff. The staff loves to sit and chat with their "friends" (regulars) while minimally and superficially attending to normal customers with a less sense of priority and urgency. I don't expect them to rush every single thing, but it was extremely obvious that the focus was to prioritize bar patrons over non-alcohol restaurant customers. Perhaps this is for profit reasons and if so, they should just be honest about it and separate bar staff from food waiters, like normal places do, or just simply be a bar place and not a pizza place. Also, the pizza making area is open and you can hear the workers every argument and discussion when it comes to wages, scheduling, next shift coverage, etc.. This is weird. At the price point of this pizza, I didn't think staff was being treated and paid so poorly. The vibe of the workers was just so "off", in general. The waitresses and waiters are very nice but often aloof and behave oddly. Like, is there something sketchy going on at this place? Are they on substances? Everyone is friendly but has no attention to detail, urgency or anything else. The last time we were here, it was very busy. But it took at least 1 hour to make 2 or 3 pizzas. The manager could tell we weren't happy. However, we didn't even know he was the manager as he didn't introduce himself properly but offered to comp our meal. This place gets 2 stars because of him and the delicious pizza . But if I ever come back, it'll just be order out by myself. Since when does valid EVERY DAY mean not valid on weekends and better yet why wasn't I told that at time of order? Store manager absolutely refused to honor. Anna P - thx for reply however you didn't provide any kind of valid response. The coupon I used was valid and I met all of the requirements in order to redeem the coupon. I even specifically told the person taking my order I had that coupon of which he responded Ok we will make it work. It was not until I arrived to pick up order I was told it would not be honored and not because I didn't follow the restrictions BUT because there was a printing error. Worst yet your manager knows of the error and said the error won't be fixed until all of the receipt paper with the wrong coupon info is used up. UPDATE: change from 1 star to 3 Just received a call from the manager about 30 Minutes after posting initial review where he acknowledged their short comings and wanted to make it right. He indicated they made another Buffalo pizza in-house and it did the same thing as ours. Seems tonight for some reason there was a deviation from the usual Buffalo sauce so they will be making sure to correct this and address the short comings. This integrity and caring is what the food industry needs more of. They came up short, owned their stuff, made the necessary changes and are making it right for the customer. This in itself will bring us back to Momma's. If ur looking for a restaurant that stands behind their product good or bad... this is ur place. I don't know where to start this review because me or my girlfriend didn't really enjoy any aspect of this dinner. To start off we got there around 8 (2 hrs before closing) and got sat at a table with a little underwhelmed with the spot being our first time, didn't know what to expect, but was not expecting such a small establishment. The people at the bar seemed like they were at our table eating with us. The people at the bar were also disruptive (loud videos on phone, one with a child watching cartoon on the tv in front of us. No issue with it just definitely not expected for what seemed to be like a nice casual date night.) besides from the ambience our service was mild at best. We sat down and didn't get greeted for 10-15 mins. Given there is only one server for whoever is not at the bar counter sitting. We were going to start off with a bottle of wine placed the order and then was told didn't have anymore after she checked. Waitress then suggested the most expensive bottle of wine for a substitute. Was disappointed about the wine but were excited to find that they had stuffed blue cheese olives which pair amazingly with a dirty martini. Asked the waitress about them and she said yes we have blue cheese and regular. We went with the dirty martini and blue cheese stuffed olives only to find our waitress coming back after 2 mins saying they had ran out earlier after she had told us they had them. (This process was about 30 mins from starting to order the wine to being told they didn't have anymore after more blue cheese olives. We went with the bottle of wine placed that was recommended because we were annoyed and just wanted a drink at this point and haven't been asked about food yet and was waiting to order. Finally order and the food took longer than normal for any Italian restaurant, we ordered chicken parmesan and spaghetti and meat sauce with meatballs along with a Caesar salad. It took at least 40 mins for us to be brought our food. We didn't get our salad and the food was room temperature at best. The chicken parm tasted like a Bojangles fillet biscuit with tomato sauce and cheese. I didn't get nearly any noodles compared to the chicken cutlet. My girlfriend plate was very underwhelming with the amount of noodles compared to sauce. The smallest portion sizes I've seen from an Italian restaurant. Got the check and the salad was still charged so I had to tell the waitress which she said oh im so sorry which at this point I had heard 5+ times and was tired of hearing it. I want results at this point. If you want to be underwhelmed and dissatisfied for a date night on a Friday come here. read more

And in between, they were bringing dishes to other tables. The waitress said they were short staffed. Again, it was not the server's fault, but it was unacceptable. This is directed toward ownership: This place should simply not exist. For customers: don't bother providing feedback. Management/ownership will publicly offer to make it right, but they won't actually follow through. On three different orders of the same item over the past few months, the simple, as described on the menu order has somehow been repeatedly impossible for the staff to fulfill. How is it possible to ruin a Marguerita pizza over and over and over again? Why does the staff have to literally ask me if the pizza is ok? (Hint: they knew it was messed up and were thankfully prepared to make it again regardless of my answer-they knew it was foul when they pulled it out of the oven) Somehow, there is NEVER a manager on staff (Alex?) to assist. The poor kitchen staff appear embarrassed to work here. I completely understand why. I've been a customer many times, and yes, have had great experiences in the past. Recently, ownership and management appear to have abandoned this place, leaving customers to suffer. Dear potential customer: don't do it. The menu on the website? "Alex's menu" does not actually exist. Don't even ask. Never ever going to waste my time and money on this establishment again. Tried out Mamas since I was in the mood for Italian. It was super cold out and the restaurant was also very cold. The restaurant is very small only a few tables and does lots of takeout business so the bartender was our server. Penne Vodka was flavorful and the pasta perfect Calzone was HUGE and delicious, perfectly cooked too. Two sandwiches: meatball sub. Meatballs were really good, perfectly formed meaning not overly compacted, they remained tender and flavorful. On the sandwich I would have preferred a little more marina but it did not detract from the taste at all. The Chicken parm was tasty too - chicken was perfectly cooked, crunchy crust yet tender and juicy. The defining element - the marina (the gravy). Very balanced flavor, no sweetness detected, just a hint of that desirable sourness. On a side note - the fries. Thank god for people who properly season fries as soon as they come from the fryer. The night before my c section I wanted a big meal and mamas came recommended from family. We ordered the fettuccine, Caesar side salad, house side salad and cannolis to go. Mamas texts you when you order is ready which is nice if you want to run into Harris Teeter while waiting on your food. The salads were great and the fettuccine portion was easily enough to split. The food here is delicious, no question about that. My fav is the chicken piccata and toasted ravioli. The service could use some help though. The wait is long, whether you order out or dine in. We dined in and waited so long for our app and main dishes, and they still got the type of pasta we chose incorrect. We didn't have enough patience or energy to order dessert, but our fav is the pistachio cake when we order to go. They have forgotten some items in our to go orders as well. Seems like there is a lot of business but it's hard to keep up. Hope they hire another server or two and some more folks in the kitchen to help, but other than that this is a restaurant we love. read more

We had some family visiting from out of state and they wanted to try some Italian food. We always tell our friends and family how friendly the people in North Carolina are. That's why we found it very unfortunate that we Had Allison as our waitress... We arrived at around 8pm there was one other table that had guests and one couple at the bar, So not busy at all. Allison never introduced herself acted as if she was super busy and was very short with us at every interaction. The food we would give 3 and a half stars. But Allison really kind of ruined the experience. Asked for a refill on my Coke (twice). She came by real fast mumbled something about machine broken and put a can of soda on the table and told me I could go ahead and refill my drink? We asked for more garlic bread. She told us "oh it's not complimentary" we didn't ask for free stuff Allison..... She spent the majority of the time we were there just chatting with the people at the bar. We had reservations for dinner on Valentines Day - our first time here. The service was great; the servers share tables. We were very happy with food we ordered; the ravioli app and Grandma's pizza. For years Mama's has been our go to pizza place for takeout. This past year Mama's has had a problem with the quality of their pizzas. This past time, several weeks ago I arrived at Mamas a few minutes early. I observed the person making the pizza sweating over the food preparation area, granted he is rather large and I'm sure it was hot near the deck ovens. When we received our pizza for takeout the pizza was not a traditional NY style pizza, it was more of a greasy preparation like one would find at little ceasars, or Costco. Certainly lower quality pepperoni was used. Hopefully one day they will correct the path they are on and hire a Pizzaiolo who knows their craft. read more

Te be honest, it was pretty meh. Ordered through Yelp (fulfilled via GrubHub) for delivery. The restaurant doesn't do direct delivery anymore. Ordered a medium pizza (half cheese for the kiddo and half pineapple and ham), hot wings and cheese sticks. Yelp confirmed the order but said I'd receive confirmation from the restaurant when they received the order. Waited a bit and no confirmation. I've been skunked before with this process, so I just called the restaurant to confirm. They had the order (yes!). The person who I spoke with was super nice. Explained they were out of medium dough and had to "cut down a large" (whatever that means). But they had the order and me and the kid were stoked. An hour and a half later the food arrives. Pizza was cold and kind of sad. It's paper thin and the crust is crazy hard. And the hot wings weren't sauced...and no sauce on the side. Just almost over cooked plain wings. Cheese sticks were good (although on the cold side). This kicker, this cost me $73. I wouldn't recommend ordering delivery. Maybe it's better in-house. But I for one am done with delivery here. Right off 485/Idlewild is our new Fav for Italian/pizza place. We walked in the door 20 mins before closing and got great service, in an immaculate and cozy setting, crazy good food and a full bar at a good price. Ariana, our server did not make us feel at all rushed. Brought bottled water to our table with our menus and a genuine greeting. She was efficient and friendly with us and her other customers. Then invited us back with sincerity. We ordered Zucchini sticks as an appetizer, and the Margarita pizza. The Zucchini appetizer was fresh, delicious and presented very nicely and was a good portion for an appetizer as well. Now the pizza, ....! We order a Margarita Pizza at every new Italian restaurant we try. The ingredients are always the same but vary immensely in sauce flavor, crust "bite" and taste, amount of basil/sauce/cheese ratio to make the perfect slice. I can honestly say that was the best pizza I have had in years. Seriously! The menu offered great choices and we cannot wait to go back and try some more offerings. What a great place. read more

I visited Mamas this year, 2023 after it had changed hands a few times. There's always a wait, so if you're in a rush, you may want to order takeout and pick it up. However, they did a complete overhaul of the interior, now have a nice bar and smaller eating area. The new owners do a fabulous job with their ingredients, the menu, excellent dishes. On our 45 Wedding Anniversary 8/12/2023, we wanted a quiet and authentic Italian Restaurant to go to without going downtown Charlotte. We are sooo very happy to have found this Gem in Matthews, NC area!!! Few Restaurants bring me joy & excitement BUT ALEX and his recently renovated Mama's Italian Restaurant has done this & I couldn't be happier. I had Shrimp Alfredo and it was FANTASTIC!! It took me back to when I would travel on business to Boston. No surprise because I found out that ALEX (owner) grew up in Boston and WOW HE KNOWS ITALIAN FOOD!! Delicious, Good Sized Portions, Fabulous Service from Allison!! Alfredo Sauce is to die for!! For appetizer I ordered 2 Meat Balls and they were so good & tasty!! My wife ordered Chicken Marsala and she said that by far it was the BEST SHE EVER ATE!! I begged for a taste and was rewarded with a taste that was truly the BEST I EVER ATE AS WELL!! Needless to say we know good food when we're lucky to find it!! We arrived at 6:30 to avoid the regular 5:00 dinner crowd and felt relaxed and at home. To celebrate we ordered a bottle of German Riesling that was just soo smooth it was great to have some left over to take home along with the memories of the good tasting food and looking forward to coming back again and again!
