One of my two go-tos in Portland for Middle Eastern cuisine. The food is always good (their fresh baked pita bread is the best, the baba ganoush is delicious, I could go on). The service here is always lovely and we always feel welcome when we come here. And the in-house ambience is pleasant for when we want to eat in (more often we get food to-go). The only thing keeping me from giving them five stars: my partner can't eat raw onion. We usually get one of the combination mezza platters and always ask to substitute extra baba ganoush for the tabbouleh, since the tabbouleh has raw onions. Half the time they forget to change this and we don't realize until we get back home with our to-go order. Other than that, they're wonderful! read more

Mamma Khouri's is a "hidden gem" in Portland! This restaurant serves Middle Eastern food, which I had never tried before visiting here. Some of the food was similar to Indian food, like the rice and lentil dishes. My friends and I tried the falafel sandwich, tabouleh, mujadra, and lentil soup. Everything was delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the falafel, which was not try at all, and the lentil soup, which was flavorful and perfect for a chilly day. The owner was super sweet, and he was happy to recommend dishes based on everybody's preferences / interests. Our food came out quickly because the restaurant was not very busy. My friends and I are already planning another trip here so we can try even more of their foods. I would recommend trying this restaurant with a large group of people so you can taste many different dishes! read more

We tried this lovely, bright, airy little Middle Eastern restaurant in the N Williams neighborhood for the first time. It's been on my list for a while. We loved their food! The flavors were delightful-fresh and tasty. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall a great experience to enjoy with friends. Here's what we ate: -Chicken Kabobs with rice, salad and Toom sauce (which is made by emulsifying garlic, lemon, & olive oil into a butter-like substance to spread on your meat or dip pita in). -Lamb Kabob with rice, salad and Toom sauce -Lamb shank with rice & salad -Gyro & salad The meat had great flavor. My chicken had onions skewered between. The salad had a bright dressing (probably lemon & olive oil) and was a nice fresh component to my meal. If you haven't tried Toom, you need to. Unless you don't like garlic. It is very garlicky! My husband really enjoyed his lamb kabob, our friend loved his lamb shank, which came with a comforting broth (see the picture) and our other friend loved her gyro. It was quite large, as gyros go! This place is AMAZING!!! I'm always on the hunt for a good middle eastern food spot and this place is absolutely going to be a new go to. The inside of the restaurant is a smaller, cozier vibe restaurant. We were greeted by staff who were extremely friendly and helpful with the menu! We started off with the fries and a hummus plate. Hummus was okay, nothing special and that's more than okay but the fries were really delicious and they serve TOUM ketchup which I have never even heard of but the combination of garlic sauce and ketchup was genius! When one sees a rating of 4.7 on Yelp it's usually safe to assume that the place is quite good all around. Unfortunately that is not always the case. I ordered food on GH from Mamma Khouri's today and it's probably gonna be a one and done for me. The food was just OK and not nearly worth ordering again when there are many other better options available for good Mediterranean food. I ordered the Vegan mezza plate, arnabeet, lentil soup and fries. Arnabeet is a favorite of mine and this one was tasty. The hummus and baba ghanoush were also tasty but the amount given was paltry for the price charged. The lentil soup was watery and blaaah. The fries were soggy and bland. I also didnt care for the soggy grape leaves or the very crunchy falafel. I'm quite familiar with Mediterranean food, having enjoyed this particular cuisine from many, many different places. Really a pleasant dining experience on all levels before seeing a show a mile away at Wonder Ballroom. The interior was lovely and peaceful. The server was chill and kind. The food was delicious and filling. We got the combo plate (steak , lamb and chicken skewers ($24) that came with tasty rice pilaf and a side salad. A surprising detour led us to an amazing Mediterranean place. We tried this place on a weekend. It wasn't much crowded and the staff was welcoming and nice. I met a friend here for supper on a Thursday. They had some good traffic and the wait staff was super friendly. The toum is so good! The lamb was tender and very well seasoned. Been here a couple times now and am super happy to have a great Medi food option so close. We've gotten similar items both times we've gone, and the chicken shawarma is outstanding. My wife was quoted saying 'this is the best falafel I've ever had in my life.' While it had a bit more cumin than I would like, they were cooked perfectly, still moist and pillowy inside, with a thin crispy shell around the outer. The hummus and baba have been extremely fresh, and the grape leaves a nice snack too. It's awesome they offer GF pita, and appear to make them in-house and fresh to order as well. The regular pita was pretty good, but no match for Nicolas'. Service has been very friendly, though a little slow at times. Most recent visit our server was also the chef cooking dinner, who I assume was one of the owners, and seemed very vested in our good experience. Overall a great spot I'll be a regular at. Very good food. lol I could end the review there honestly. We tried a Combo Meat Plate, I enjoyed all the meats, especially the beef/lamb (but I always do). Also tried one of their Mammas Special Sandwich, but I would say it's more of a burrito for sure w/ a toasted tortilla or thin pita. Lots of fresh parsley flavor and tender meat. I was excited for a night out, a rare thing in this economy. Unfortunately both the food and the service made the $100 spent feel like a waste. The dolmas were bad, very dry and the baba ghanoush also had a strange flavor. The worst part was we ordered both two appetizers and two main dishes, but after waiting 30-40 minutes without even getting our drinks, suddenly everything came at once. The fresh pita came out warm and it was delectable! For dessert we got the K'taef Bil Ashta... the waitress reported that their restaurant is the only one in Portland serving it. Don't miss it! We've been wanting to try this place after walking past it a couple times down the street and seeing people coming in and out. For a dinner for two we split: - Tabouleh - Lamb Shawarma Sandwich - Chicken & Lamb Shawarma Plate - Knafe - Lebanese Soda (Mulberry and rose water with soda) ___________________ I've never had lebanese soda so it was a must item to try this visit. The mixture seemed to be more floral in the taste but super light. I can see how it could be popular in the summer when it's hot. The tabouleh was OK but had more parsley than expected. Still a nice option if you want to start off your meal with something light. To move on to our mains I would probably pass on the lamb shawarma sandwich next time. The meat was good but it became a little messy to eat with each bite. I would highly recommend the chicken & lamb shawarma plate as it was nice to taste the meats separate from the sauces and veggies. The plate was a good option to get as well if you want to have the rice with your dish. Super filling and you can get sauces to dip on the side as well. I also have never had knafe before but I've always wanted to try it after seeing a couple food bloggers have this abroad. I got the chicken kabob plate. The chicken and hummus were pretty good. Not very much chicken and The salad was so so, they put the hot chicken on top of the salad so it was mushy and wilted when I got it and I live literally a 3 min walk away from the restaurant. Got a $5 Coke that was for a child and had about 5 sips of Coke. A dollar a sip is asinine. Photos to show. I ordered lentil soup for an extra $10 and got a 1/4 bowl of soup maybe half depending on the size of the bowl but it was RIDICULOUS how little lentil soup they gave me for that much money. I've gotten better value at an expensive steak restaurant. To make matters worse the soup was 75% potatoes! Wth? It is a terrible value for the money. I paid almost $40, picked it up myself and I was still hungry when it was all gone. Terrible for a restaurant if you ask me. I'm posting photos and I will continue to write reviews because the audacity of restaurant owners in Portland charging so much for so little is outrageous and I can't believe people here pay such a high price for just a little bit of food that is ok at best. It's not inflation. It's greed. I did some research and discovered that they have raised their prices at least $2 per item in the last 11 months. So during a pandemic when people are out of work, sick at home they are being over charged for very little food, is horrific if you ask me. Way to support your community. Ugh.
