I walked past it each morning as it stands between where I was staying and my office this week. There is some video online of the fountain with water and it's very lovely. The sculpture depicts six slender ballerinas posed in "grant battement," a classical ballet position meaning "great brush off the floor." They are bronze and have the usual green tint that would be expected. They were installed in 1990, dedicated to Dance Saint Louis and are on loan to the art council. Folke Filbyter is by…read moreSwedish artist Carl Milles (1875-1955) and the plaque indicates that it is on loan from the Saint Louis Art Museum. According to the artist's statement, "Milles had been inspired by an episode in the Swedish author and Nobel Laureate Verner von Heidenstam's novel Folkungaträdet when he created Folke Filbyter, who was the heathen ancestor of the Folkunga dynasty. According to an old Swedish myth, Folke Filbyter was searching for his grandson who had been kidnapped by the monks. In this sculpture, he is apparently crossing a brook while engrossed in his search." The detail in the sculpture is quite impressive.
