The piers also tend to attract a lot of birds looking for the fishermen's leftovers. The Eau Gallie Pier is just behind the library and north of the Eau Gallie Causeway in Melbourne. It stretches out over the picturesque Indian River. You can see the bridge to your right. Besides the pier there are docks, 2 boat ramps, and couple of picnic tables at opposite ends of parking lot. The pier is perfect for wildlife watching, photography, fishing, and catching the sunset. Eau Gallie has a long history of fishing beginning with the Native Americans and continuing into the turn of the century when James Wadsworth Rossetter arrived in Eau Gallie in 1902 and became a leader in the local fishing industry. Todays sportsman continue to enjoy fishing for snapper, grouper and tarpon in the river. Best of all the parking and pier are both free. The Eau Gallie Historic Distric is steps away with restaurants, art, and shopping. Discoveries like this pier are just another reason to love Old Florida towns.

Houston received an 80-acre homestead on the north shore of the Eau Gallie River. The park takes its name from the once thriving pineapple plantations that used to be in Eau Gallie in the late 1800's. At one point land was selling for $1,000 an acre until the freeze of 1894-95 which killed off the pineapple crops. One Eau Gallie family, John and Juliet Aspinwall, lost 150,000 pineapples and that was the last of the pineapple industry in the area. Grab your hearing protection and stop. These fan boat's are so cool. They go fast! The guy even took us on a mud flat to show off a bird nest with eggs. Soon he will be showing everyone baby birds. The restaurant now is so nice for what it is. I like to come here and take my food down by the water and watch the fish fight over the leftovers. Haha their food is good.
