One of the greatest rewards of dining at a family owned restaurant is going in and being recognized, greeted and properly seated! Mana's has been our family's choice for as far as I can remember. We love the service, the atmosphere and the food. Their chips are so delicious and the salsa is great! There's something about dining here that gives you a sense of trust. You always see the same friendly faces and there is hardly ever a problem. If there is, they are quick to respond! The dining area is a little small but I like it! It feels like home and is very comfortable. The tables are neatly arranged and utilize the space well, giving each person room to eat and chat. The service is fast even when the small restaurant is packed, which is all the time! Even though Mana's is very popular and there is always a crowd, we have never had to wait to be seated, even for dinner! The food is delicious. They have a variety of different Mexican dishes at very reasonable prices. The orders are quick to get in and out making the waiting time less than 15 minutes (lunchtime). Dinnertime less than 30 minutes. Mana's is located in a neighborhood and can be difficult to find. Definitely worth Google's mapping! The parking is small but it allows for a number of vehicles to comfortably fit. Usually when the parking is full, we know it is "rush hour" and come back a little later but we have managed to time our dining around these hours. It's worth it. If you're looking for a friendly atmosphere, fast service and affordable dining....this is your kind of place to eat at. This place is Cheap, Greasy Tex-Mex that only certain people can appreciate. The service is not the greatest , but I still love a place I can show up at with 6 of my friends after a day on the river with a bottle of Jaeger, and not only do the staff remember us , but we end up closing the place down with them and partying to the wee hours of the night. This is one place I miss dearly since moving away from San Marcos. If you want over priced, rude, pretensions food -go somewhere else. Isn't as good as I remembered it. No upscale on the interior of the restaurant. Food is ok. The rice was mushy, the beans didn't have a lot of flavor and the flour tortillas were bland but soft. You ever find something you didn't realize you were searching for? That's how it was for me today when we stepped through the doorway and I felt like I did when I would visit my childhood friend's house and her mom would greet me with a fresh tortilla and a warm smile. The enchilada plate my husband had was good ole from-the-heart home cooking and pleasantly generous with the gravy and cheese. My beef fajitas had a delicious off-the-grill smoky flavor and the tortillas were fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back for the food as well as the genuine warmth conveyed from Richard, who with his family keeps alive the hopes and dreams of his parents who opened this special place in the 1970's. I always get the chicharrón gordita here and it's quite good. Approximately spicy. Lackluster salsa though. Nice ambiance. The rice is okay, better than most, not a huge fan though. The beans are pretty good but it's hard to mess up beans. read more

This rating is ONLY based on the quality of one order of food, which was the Fajita Tacos. Customer service was great and friendly, but jesus the meat was not meat. It was inedible, unless chewed into a nice gooey blob you could swallow in small chunks. So I essentially had a pepper/onion taco and called it good. Also.... if you are an Horchata connoisseur (as my husband is;) you can tell this is Class brand mix, and not authentic, FYI. That's all folks. I realize some people might not see the value in a place like this. It's a converted mobile trailer home tucked back in a neighborhood - the kind of place you have to know about to find. That's my kind of place. :-) While other friends had Garcia's or Herbert's, this was one of my favorite little go-to spots in college. Gosh, I haven't been here in awhile either...kind of makes me sad now. :-( The service was good and the family and staff that run it are friendly. There's nothing fancy about it here but it's a nice, laid-back, casual atmosphere. In fact I'm fairly sure we came here in bathing suits and shorts one time. The food is good and leaned somewhat toward homemade Mexican rather than Tex-Mex to me. Of course depending on the dish - cheese enchiladas were a favorite of mine at the time. I asked about their carne guisada one time and the waitress gave me a whole small bowl to try! Oh I should also mention that they are still BYOB! Most places I'm not a big fan of this, but for Mana's it just works. On another note if they still do it, I'd probably advise against the all-you-can-eat tacos (on Sunday I think) just for your health in general. If you're looking for standout, fancy, tex-mex food then this isn't the place for you. But if you want a homey, casual, easy dinner then it's a perfect spot! read more

This is a small restaurant hidden away in San Marcos TX. We came here because most restaurants were packed and we didn't feel like waiting. When we arrived we saw that they had an all you can eat Enchilada and taco plate. We ordered this and the food was great. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I would not have found this place without help from some locals. We all got combo-plates and shared everything. There was nothing that wasn't exceptionally good. Right from the start, the Chips & Salsa where fresh and well above par! My Chicken Enchiladas were excellent, and just the right spice level for me. I like Hot, but not burn-and-taste-nothing Hot. The waitress let us know how hot a couple of items where when we ordered. Service was fast and pleasant, and pretty too. Tacos were also excellent and full of chicken! My friend's Beef Burrito was huge and really tasty. I lived in Hawaii for 11 years. Mana in Hawaiian means an Inner/personal strength or power or Strength of soul... So appropriate for this place. Hubby and I took the bike from Austin for the day and we ended up right in that area looking at a truck for sale. Really glad we stopped even though the truck seller said it was a dive. He had the soft tacos and I had the chicken flauta's, the food was tasty, had huge servings and the chips and salsa were good. Another plus was they had strawberry Fanta. A dive is one thing, but dead flies and toothpicks strewn about on a dirty cash register counter is another. I didn't see these things until paying the bill on the way out, which is when I decided I would never return unless I had no other option. The food was ok, have had worse but have had MUCH better, and you get a lot of food for cheap (and the waitress was great,) but I'd rather pay an extra buck or two to pitch in for them to hire someone to keep the place clean. Mana's is a great little mexican restaurant. It's in the middle of a neighborhood and is hard to find if you don't know where you're going, but it is very tasty. It's fairly cheap and my wife and I enjoy their queso almost every time we go. I haven't been in ahwile but last time we went they had a special on Sundays where you could order an all you can eat mexican plate. I love to pig out so that was perfect for me. The only reason it didn't get a five star rating from me is because sometimes when we go their salsa seems different and we don't enjoy it as much. It's just kind of random. read more

It's always fresh- including the tomatoes on the salad, which I believe are a good 'tell'- (so many other restaurants pass off watery flavorless pink slices as 'tomatoes'). I digress. I found this hidden gem a few years back and have stopped in for the lunch specials a few times since. Can't beat a full meal with a drink and fresh tortillas for only $5.99. The restaurant itself is a bit run down and customers should avoid using the bathroom, it's gross. The food is always extremely fresh though and very well prepared. The kitchen is also extremely speedy so this is a great place for a quick, inexpensive lunch. read more

I was born and raised in SM. You wouldn't even known that this restaurant exist unless you grew up here. Its hidden away in a old neighborhood. I was lucky cause my grandparents backyard backed up to the restaurant. Richard Juarez (graduated with my older brother in 1980 from SMHS)has kept the family business going for years. It has been in business for as far as I remember 40+ years. If your ever in San Marcos and want some excellent home cooked Mexican food stop by and see Richard Juarez. Awesome HOMEMADE flour tortillas & salsa!! The queso and chips are the best. The grandson of the original owners(been open since the 70's?) helped me and he provided awesome customer service. Actually hadn't been to Mana's since college, over 10 years ago... but tasted the same. Got the Juarez plate to go and took back to Austin, it fed both the hub & I dinner. The best kept secret in San Marcos. When I was going to school down there in the late 80's early 90's, this was the only late night place that was open. Everytime I'm in San Marcos, I stop by to enjoy this one of a kind Mexican Food Restaurant. They make their own chips!!!!!!!
