For the first time in her short life, we had to leave her at the vet's overnight for a TPLO surgery. In the lead-up to the surgery, Dr. Kirsten provided us with direct, clear information and presented us with our various options. In contrast to the clinic where we nearly had the TPLO surgery done, Dr. Kirsten and her staff were deeply understanding when I started sobbing when dropping Lunchbox off. Dr. Kirsten's love for dogs is palpable and I felt fully confident that I was leaving my precious dog in capable, loving, and compassionate hands. Lunchbox was so well cared for while at HSW and the entire staff went out of their way to avoid incurring extra charges for us, to make Lunchbox comfortable, and to make the entire experience as painless and minimally traumatic as possible. Post-surgery communication with the office was wonderful, and they fielded my stressed-out phone calls for days afterward with grace and patience. Durango is lucky to have such wonderful veterinary care available!

Her office has a small town feel, she knows my pups by name, and has wonderful flexibility to ensure they have the best care. For example, my dogs have a history of adverse vaccine reactions. She ensured that they were seen in the morning (a time when she typically performs surgery) so if they had a reaction I could call her office instead of paying emergency vet fees. From our experiences with Doctor Steven R. Smolen at the Animal Hospital of Telluride, we would say that he suffers from moral depravity. We have taken all three of our dogs to his clinic over time but recently our little 15 year old 16 pound guy went into convulsions and was yelping uncontrollably at the top of his capacity. I instantly called the The Animal Hospital of Telluride and then called the emergency number. It was just after 5pm on a Wednesday. Doctor Smolen answered the phone and I ended up FaceTiming with him so he could see the dire straits our little guy was in. He saw that Beau was thrashing so wildly and was hard to hold. Like a 16 pound fish out of water. Yelping so loud that I had to go to another part of the house so Dr. Smolen and I could hear each other. He kept repeating, "You have to take him to the emergency hospital in Grand Junction. I can't help you now." He told us four times to take him to Grand Junction. We are two and a half hours away from Grand Junction! Finally, in anger, I yelled at him and said it was a waste of time to talk to him and hung up. I called a vet in Montrose at 5:29pm (time stamp on the phone) and got the same response (Also a clinic where we have taken our three guys many times). At last, I got help from a vet that we had never been to and we were able to drug Beau and take him to a Grand Junction emergency hospital. While we were on the highway, Smolen sent a text: "I was quite incensed that you told me it was a waste of time talking to me..." He did this minutes after seeing how agonized Beau was and how traumatized we were and yet he could not help himself. Moral depravity. You can tell everything you need to know about a person by the way he or she treats animals and children. Not just their own If they have any but all animals and children. And by the way, Smolen's website says: "Emergencies and accidents seem to happen at the worst possible times... Our expert 24-hour care services will be there for you when you need us. Any time your pet has an emergency or a health problem, rest assured that quality veterinary help is nearby." In our experience just after 5pm on a Wednesday, this website is a lie. Also, I have saved the recordings of our experience with Sr. Smolen, so I have proof.

Mercy had been on the tail end of a bad hot spot break out due to allergies and one of the spots on her face had broken open again. I had heard the girls answering the phones telling people they had no open appointments until the next day. My appointment was just a run back with a tech but I asked if she had any advise on how to treat the hotspot. Dr. Hamilton offered to fit us in for an appointment. I was not expecting such a wonderful, caring staff and doctor. I am so thankful they saw her, Dr. Hamilton perscribed a new antibiotic/seroid spray that seems to be working a miracles! I highly recommend this vet! The prices also seem to be half what I pay in Dallas.
