We were visiting Cortez and our 17 yo chihuahua passed away suddenly. Not being familiar with the area and not near our own veterinarian, we called Montezuma Veterinary Clinic. The lady who answered the phone said that they would take care of disposing of our previous fur baby. Then, with no further questioning on my part the lady said, "I'll be honest with you, we just send the bodies to the landfill." That is not what we needed to hear after just losing our pet. I would recommend that the staff be trained in how to handle the pain of a customer losing a valued and loved member of their family. read more

My dog has been a patient here for 11 years. I called them for a swollen and red eye. They asked for my name and other info and then replied "You are inactive, therefore we can NOT see you". They then said "situations with an eye can escalate quickly, you can try ADOBE ANIMAL HOSPITAL or VIBRANT PET ANIMAL HOSPITAL and there are also Veterinarian's in DURANGO that you can try". These people DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANIMAL HEALTH. They only care about the $$$$. This was reiterated by the other two local Vet's in which I called. I was at VIBRANT PET HOSPITAL WITHIN 10 MINUTES!!!!!! I have a 15-year-old dog who started aspirating and coughing and I was concerned for him so I called around and talked to folks. One Acquaintance told me "I'm not sure about Montezuma vet clinic I don't think they're that good.". I found out firsthand the opposite is true! They are down to earth awesome. Compared to other Vets, they were welcoming and got us in the day I called. I was met by a very intelligent, clear and patient front desk supervisor. Montezuma vet clinic is very accountable, and I like it that. I believe it is a smart business practice to secure financial agreements. As a LMT for 19 years I do have some medical training and basic understanding of respiratory issues, I told the Staff I do not want any immunizations I'm solely here for a radiograph. My request was received with respect. No one tried to influence me to add this or that to charge for. I didn't have to wait long for care. Our veterinarian assistant was kind, genuine and a true animal lover. We got the radiograph with results in under 15 minutes. We discussed the different possibilities of what the X-ray revealed. Standard practice is to rule out probable cause. Even though I felt a heartworm test would be futile, the doctor assured me it's good to know. If there was an infection he would be treatable. Doc Erin was very patient and tolerant in our conversation which I appreciated. The heart worm test was negative. We talked about the sad news, and Doc assured me the radiologist will look at the x-ray and get back to me in a 2 days to determine the cause of the tumor. My sweet dog is inoperable so I brought up the subject of euthanasia. The Doctor was very supportive and took time to educate me on reading the signs and symptoms of dogs when they are in pain. Putting your own loving dog that's been with you for 15 years down is very difficult. I'm so glad I chose Montezuma Vet Clinic. I am grateful for my Vet. She hustles hard, and is a kind, caring, supportive, intelligent and a clear communicator. I am blessed she is coming to my home to help Jackson be with God. read more

Having had animals all my life I have spent some time in vet clinics. I can tell you over the course of a few days visiting the area we spent some time with the staff at this clinic and they all seem to truly love animals. While on vacation with three kids and our 11 yo golden our dog began trying to vomit around 9:45PM shortly after my children fell asleep in the little town on Kayenta. We didn't think much at first, but within 10 minutes I knew she was in danger. The look of complete panic in her eyes as she paced the hotel room was terrifying. We quickly started to google emergency vets as I called our few back home (all of who couldn't be bothered to help us!). I ended up having to leave a message for this vet and really felt I was going to watch my dog die. To my surprise, the vet called back immediately. At this point is was just before 10:30PM and we were two hours away from the clinic. On the other end of the line was an amazing vet going through the options and the worst fear that it's likely our pup wouldn't make the nearly 2-hour drive to the vet. My husband quickly put our pup in the car as I stayed at the hotel with our sleeping children. I said if it looks like she's going to die, just pull over and be with her as they walked out the door. Upon arriving at the clinic with a dog still alive, but very very sick, the Dr. Hawkins and a technician carried her inside. She performed a quick x-ray which revealed her stomach had bloated and then twisted (GDV). For many dogs, this is a death sentence. Dr. Hawkins performed the life-saving surgery in the wee hours of the morning as my husband sat in the waiting room. He left the clinic around 3AM to head the two hours back to get us. About 8:30am the next morning, the doctor called to inform us she was doing well but needed to eat and drink before she could go home. Later that day we stopped by to check on her, but she wasn't yet ready to go. We left for lunch and came back around closing time for her very ready to be back with her family. I have never met such a devoted and wonderful vet in my life! We stayed near town with her for a few days and a few days later her 9-inch incision looked a little red. Without hesitation the receptionist said to bring her in, we'll keep an eye on her for the day and you and your family go have some fun. She was happy and healthy when we picked her up and incision was only bruised. This time, Dr. Hawkins was on vacation, but another wonderful vet took care of our pup. We have just arrived home with all our family members still alive thanks to these wonderful and caring individuals. Thank you doesn't even begin to come close. read more

The 3 stars is due to friends who have spoke well of this business establishment and only because I believe my friends. My experience with this business establishment was brief and confusing. "Snoopy" was our pet who came to us by a very kind woman who could not care for a dog this size. Our friend provided the shot record and where she went to have Snoopy treated. Now fast forward a year and a need to update shots and we find ourselves needing to update shots. My Wife calls to provide our information and the issue with trying to find out what current shots are needed and the arrogant lady provides the first and last name of owner of dog. To me that was ok. All good right? Wrong! I walk into this arrogant establishment and the front desk person acts as if she is a Vet and an owner. She advises that she cannot give out any information on a pet and/or last owner. However this unintelligent know it all sat with my Wife on the phone sharing all the personal information that she claims she can't do with me there. Sounds almost biased if not down right labeling to not only me but to my Wife. This front desk person should be demoted to janitor because I gave her the information to help me and she chose to create problems instead of solutions. I will be watching this place to see if they have little miss big pants still running the front desk area like a clown convention with everyone holding her stupid rainbow balloons. read more

My husband and I are traveling across the country with our three dogs and we were stopped near Mesa Verde National Park to camp for a week when one of our dogs, MooMoo, started having diarrhea every couple of hours for 2 days straight. We looked up a nearby veterinary clinic and Montezuma Veterinary Clinic came up which was close by so we decided to take MooMoo first thing in the morning without having made an appointment previously, hoping they'd be able to take an emergency case. When we got there, the receptionist was very welcoming and helpful and was loving on all our dogs (JoJo and Chowder tagged along to give MooMoo moral support ;) ), which was very nice as it put us at ease that MooMoo would be well taken care of, and she was! She was at the clinic for a few hours while Dr. Hawkins did a physical exam and a fecal sample test and it turned out that MooMoo had a bacterial infection which could be easily remedied with antibiotics and Dr. Hawkins even prescribed a special probiotic kit and bland canned food to help her digestion. The cost was very affordable, and we were very happy with the care given to our fur baby! read more

Poor communication and overall service. I scheduled an appointment with the most senior vet at the practice because I wanted to speak to someone knowledgeable about dogs with a seizure disorder. I arrived for the appointment only to be told that the vet I'd requested was out that day and I'd be seen by their newest, most inexperienced vet. I was not notified of this in advance, had driven 30 minutes to get to their office, and would have really appreciated getting a phone call about the change before I left home. The office staff acted as if I shouldn't have a problem with their changing the vet who would see my dog and didn't understand why it was an issue. I left without seeing one of the vets. I DO NOT recommend going to this vet practice as they do not understand a client's need to speak with an experienced vet when a pet has special medical issues. read more

I am very disappointed we have been a customer of Montezuma vet since we moved to Cortez and loved Shane and the care we received until today... my sons dog got ran over and he went in to ask if someone could come out and look at her or we could bring her in and was told they needed $400 deposit and she wouldn't be seen until after 5 and it would be after hours then we got there around 2 so we rushed her to Dolores where they got her right in and diagnosed her, I dont understand a clinic that could be more cold to not even look at a child's dog. I understand everyone is busy in this life and I've owned a business for 25 years here and would never treat a customer like that...I would have had no issue paying for her care but to make a dog wait that long in pain and require 400 deposit without even talking to us I guess you don't care if the animal dies while waiting until you have an opening? I wonder if the emergency room would do that to a person with a broken femur...I'm so disgusted right now and hope you sleep well at night knowing you don't have compassion read more
