I had the chicken chow mein because I'd not had any in a long time. I was not disappointed. My partner ordered the curry chicken. He and I both were disappointed the curry taste was hardly noticeable. However, that did not keep me from bringing home the leftovers because the amount of food is more than substantial. We went early, about 5:00, and although there not many people at time as the meal continued there were numerous take out orders being picked up. Our service was very good. Ok, let me tell my experience : This is a Chinese fast-food restaurant named "Mandarin Beijing." I called them and speaking in Chinese, to inquire about placing a catering order for a party. The person who answered the phone hung up on me immediately after hearing me speak Chinese, without any attempt at communication. I called back and asked this employee(TONY),"Why did you hang up on me like that ?" He responded, "Because I didn't understand what you were saying." I said, "I understand you work at a Chinese restaurant but don't speak Chinese,but why didn't you ask me anything or say, 'Sorry, I don't speak Chinese,' instead directly hung up on a customer?" He's like " because I don't understand....." So as someone who has lived in the United States for over a decade, this is the first time I've encountered such a situation. I don't want to directly assume or judge whether this employee named Tony harbors any discriminatory malice or other intentions, but as a customer, I feel extremely uncomfortable with this behavior. My family and I love this place. Excellent service every time (the owner? guy who always at the register - knows and recognizes my husband every time he comes in to pick up at this point) and salt and pepper chicken wings are always fire! My two little boys also love the cream cheese wontons, and you really can't go wrong with anything you order from here. We've dined in and have taken to-go orders multiple times over the last couple years and we've never been disappointed. They've catered my 1-year-old's birthday party and were a huge hit, and we always change up our order because they have an extensive menu with a lot to offer. The salt and pepper shrimp is so, so good (this is actually my favorite) because they offer it de-shelled, and unlike some other places, they don't skimp out on the shrimp and fill the party tray with lettuce on the bottom to make it look like they gave you more. I bit into it and said Ahhh Finally decent Pork BBQ Ribs! I immediately ordered a 2nd App. In the car I had a few sloppily riding using napkins and happy! The food here is so delicious and the family meals for various size groups offer a great variety of all the Chinese food favorites. For larger groups, the lazy Susan table that spins is so helpful. The ambience is simple but nice and the place is very clean. My only critique was when we entered no one greeted us. We had to walk up to the take out counter. The waitress also wasn't very friendly. Wanted to try this spot out as we was looking for a new Chinese place in Chula Vista. This is how I rate places: 1 Star : Big mistake, never coming back 2 Star : Decent but won't come back. Don't recommend 3 Star : If we crave this type of food and are in the area, we will most likely eat here. 4 Star : Gonna come back and recommend. Compared to the Chinese spot next to the college, this place is lacking taste Sweat & Sour Chicken. Looked promising but still bland. Not sure if they ran out of seasoning or what. The Sushi House off telegraph has better Sweat & Sour chicken . 2 stars Chicken and Broccoli. It's hard to screw this one up. But yet, this place still made it bland. But maybe 2.5 stars. Mandarin Beijing is like our Royal Mandarin of Chula Vista. They both have good food, they both get really busy and they both have Salt and Pepper Chicken wings. We have come here multiple times and it's always a hit. Chow mein, Broccoli beef, Mongolian Beef, Yu Hsiang Eggplant all delicious. Pre-Pandemic, the dining room is on the small side. It has a huge fish tank by the entrance and a small to-go counter in front of the kitchen. During this Covid era, they have a make shift front window/counter at the doorway. Where you order and pick up your food. On my Latest visit there I ordered their House Special Chow Mein and Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings. As usual the chow mein was good, but the wings were not what I expected. The wings were heavily covered in batter. They were almost double is size due to the amount of batter it was cooked in. It was really crunchy. As I bit into it, my wife said "You have strong teeth" because the crunch was so loud as I bit into a wing. It was good despite the extra crunch. I will be a little understanding that it wasn't the usual wings I love, because I was the first customer of the day. Hopefully it was just a one time thing and not how they're making them for now on. Overall, I still like this place for my Chinese food cravings. I always get the go to items mentioned above because...that's what I know I'll like. I will try to order some other dishes. Everything was delicious, the best was the sesame chicken, they made it crispy on the outside and the sauce was just perfect. The least that I liked was the BBQ pork. Parking is a little difficult to find due to the In N Out amongst other businesses around but the staff is super friendly and the food is clearly good because they do a ton of takeout. Two bowls of soup, curried chicken, salt and pepper wings and beef chow fun ran about $96 but that's from their dinner menu.
