The food here is really disgusting and the owner of the business is very off putting and rude. I'd avoid coming here.

I've tried several different "Asian" restaurants in the Foxboro area, but I have always enjoyed Mandarin Chef the best. The food I've been served is always fresh and made perfectly. To me a tell-tale sign of the quality is how the vegetables are served, always crisp and fresh. Never soggy or overcooked. The meat dishes, including chicken and beef is always perfect. In the fifteen years I've been a patron, I've never had a complaint. The staff is always friendly to me, with the owner (Guang) saying hello and calling me by name. 3 1/2 stars. Mandarin Chef is a little neighborhood place in Foxboro. My kids were playing in a sports tournament nearby. We had not eaten lunch and this was the place the starving boys chose. It served our purpose.....very quick, mostly hot food. For appetizers we ordered some Steamed Peking Duck Ravioli. These were doughy and cold on the inside. I would not recommend them. We also ordered some Beef Teriyaki. These were lean and very flavorful. We all ordered Dinner Combinations since we were staying in a hotel and did not want a lot of leftovers. Every combo came with a choice of Crab Rangoon, Chicken Wing, or Vegetarian Spring Roll. I am not a fan of Crab Rangoon at all so I did not try it but my men loved the Crab Rangoon. The Chicken Wings looked like they were freshly made and were tasty. There was a dollar extra charge for the Wonton Egg Drop Soup which was decent. The main dishes ordered included Spicy Garlic Beef, Shrimp & Veggies, Chicken & Beef Teriyaki, and Beef Teriyaki & Boneless Spareribs. Everyone was pleased with what they ordered. There was only one person taking care of the front of the house of this small place. I give this one 5 stars because they have very good Chinese food and they have reasonable prices. Lunch and Dinner Combo specials are great deals and two of them will feed a family of 4. Owners Steve and his wife are super nice and the service is excellent. Restaurant is small and tastefully decorated. I haven't found anything that wasn't yummy, but I'll keep trying. read more

if it wasn't for the fellow yelpers posting claims like "best Chinese food in town" and even pictures of their menu, i probably wouldn't be as pumped to try the place out. maybe i should have stuck to the less Americanized dishes (do they exist? i know not), but my mental picture of a "sweet & sour" dish urged me to order their lunch in chicken version, along with fried rice and hot & sour soup (reminiscence from another distant memory), AND a teriyaki beef app that came with, all for under $7!!! guy picking up the phone sounded more like an ABC than what he looked like when i finally came to meet him in person. that was quite surprising, actually. he was courteous and efficient, thanking me for patronage and such. the restaurant was practically empty during a weekday lunch time, but that is to be expected in a small town non-American eatery. anyway, excited to open my lunch when i got home, as i was starving since the call was made. only to be disappointed through and through. beef teriyaki was actually the "best" part of the meal, it being an ok, average fare. soup had lots of fixings in there, but was rather tasteless itself, and lacking the vinegary property. felt like i was just dunking plain corn starch paste with a hint of spiciness. needless to say, 1.25 pints of it went down the drain, and that's only bc i have problems wasting "perfectly edible" food. it WAS edible per se, just not enjoyable. meanwhile, the so-called sweet & sour chicken was downright..."horrifying" (see pic). i know i shouldn't be comparing with the Hong Kong style dishes i had in my childhood; i should have expected THIS type of preparation. but, it was really just tasteless chicken wrapped in thick batter, fried and then slathered in this super artificial red colored syrupy goo. the kind that would congeal at the bottom of the takeout box and you could peel it out and jiggle it like Jello. and it was soooo artificially sweet that my throat felt the sugar burn and was desperately begging for water, or maybe even soda, as a cleanser. suddenly, i started to wonder where my great $7 lunch deal went. this fail partially falls on me, really. if I had known they offered pad thai, i might have just stuck with that. but now, that red syrup...really, my mouth hasn't forgiven me yet. blehhhhh!!! really wanted to like this place, and glad to see others appreciating their food. but i'm not so sure after this meal. might give them another chance on next occasion, and see if i have better luck. but for now, I have to sign up for a detox. p.s. they have a sign inside the restaurant stating "gluten-free" dishes available...but judging by their version of classics, take it how you will. read more

Went there for dinner tonight. Food was very good. Service was good, we ate inside it is very clean. We would go back. Wifey had orange chicken, son in law had Kung pao, daughter had general gau's I had Pu Pu platter. Nice size portions. We also had the salt & pepper calamari it was good but a lil dry. This place sucks. Sounds harsh but it sucks. We got a Pu Pu platter and house rice. We ate the wings and threw out the rest of the food. It was old and dried out. Not sure what kind of rice that was, but that too went in the trash. Get this! Even the fortune cookies were stale! WTF read more

Came here for the first time placed an order my husband picked it up the order said Charlie. He then tried to convince him that the order was for Chelsea. It was the wrong food and it tasted like dog food. I would never order from this place again. Probably should stick with the basics like Chinatown. read more

Gross. the owner was rude on the phone and in person through their shower curtain brigade and shovel passing for pick up...so bizarre (even for covid). Pupu platter for 2: eggrolls were burnt and the rest seemed to be sitting under a heat lamp. biggest reason for this review??? All the meat had a rancid undertone, i couldnt even give my dog the pork strips. rice was old and flavorless. they didnt even give enough duck sauce (2 small cups) to give some flavor to the boring and dry lo mein or PFrice. i wish i didnt waste my $35 and i hope i dont get sick later. My coworkers and I often come here for Lunch. The value and quality of the food for the price is amazing. For approximately $8 you get your choice of entree from the lunch menu, choice of white or fried rice, choice of soup, and an appetizer. The quality and freshness of the food is great. It's always made to order and super tasty. You won't leave hungry thats for sure. Not sure what the prices are like for their dinner menu, but the lunch value is great. read more

I had bookmarked Mandarin Chef more than a year ago. Today I finally get to it, but sadly my original review is now obsolete. This location has been a string of Chinese joints since I moved to Foxboro. None lasted until it became Mandarin Chef. The owner, Stephen, was a pleasant guy that surprised me by remembering my name after only having been there for take-out once or twice. The food was excellent. The sauces were light and flavorful. Nothing was greasy or heavy as some 'Chinese' food can be. Service and delivery were quick and personal. A couple of months ago I noticed a real drop off in the quality of the food. And the portions, which were never large (quality over quantity), got smaller. A new menu that came in the mail recently has been completely reworked. The past couple of times that I've been there, I have been hoping to see Stephen and express my concern that he was messing up a good thing. Though I see from recent reviews that he's no longer affiliated with the place. The new owners may coast a while on the loyal customers that Stephen drew (and we are many) but unless they improve the product I'm not expecting it to last. read more

When Steven was bought out earlier in 2011, we were sad and disappointed. Half of the charm of Mandarin Chef was that Steve knew everybody in town, their children, and was on a first-name basis with many of us. The other reason to go was the food. His recipes, his ideas, all executed beautifully. We finally ordered takeaway on May 15, and, although the new owners are friendly, the food was dreadful. Lo Mein tasted moldy, sauces were a bland mixture of the same ingredients: salt and sugar. Everything was oily. Ingredients in general were somewhat inferior, especially the chicken wings, which used to be jumbo, but are now medium size. Only the current owners know their motivations for proffering inferior food to customers who already know how high the bar was set before Steven left. I venture a guess that they thought it would be a cash cow, but what they don't realize is that what we all tasted in the food were "seasonings" they just don't have anymore: love and trust. We won't be going back, and we'll travel to wherever Steven sets up shop next. read more

It is without hesitation that I recommend Mandarin Chef of Foxboro, MA! The food is excellent, portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. A great value! We decided to stop here when we were in the area based on the reviews so far. It's a tiny little place with a handful of tables. So I expected it to be fairly quick. The meal started off good. The Egg rolls were huge and nice and crispy, just the way I like them. The Shrimp dumplings were a bit of a letdown. They were a bit to gummy for my liking. The house Lo Mein was good, but a over salty. As if too much Soy got added during the cooking. The Shrimp with Curry sauce was the biggest disappointment. Overcooked shrimp in a grainy curry sauce. It tasted like a jar curry paste was added and not cooked trough or added anything to smooth it out. The service was good and polite. The only negative was that our meal took longer than i expected to come out based on the fact that we were the only people there. Overall it was an average Chinese place to me. My boyfriend and I usually order delivery, though we have grabbed take-out several times and dined in once - it is always quick and delicious! The owner is a great guy, who often delivers our food and always asks how we are doing, how our vacations were, etc. He knew us by name and what we like to order very quickly, and has never forgotten! You haven't had fried rice until you have the Mandarin Chef's House Fried Rice! It is Foxialicious..... that's 'delicious' for Foxboro! (Lol!) We've NEVER had anything to to eat from here that we all didn't like, that's a hard thing to say when you have a family of 4, 3 kids.... I mean 2 kids and 2 adults!!! The delivery service is fast, professional and the food is as hot as it would when it comes right off the stove, oh and did I say FAST??!! I've been going to Mandarin Chef for the past year. I tend to have to stay away from gluten and they some excellent choices for that. I go with the gluten free house rice. It has raisins, pork, pineapple to name a few. Also I get the gluten free crispy chicken. My stomach has no reactions from these which is great. The rest of my family also enjoys numerous items on their regular menu. The staff is also very friendly. Keep up the great work! read more

Went for lunch shortly before 1 PM today. No customers present, no one to seat us, so we finally sat ourselves. When staff (2) were present there was not a smile the whole time. It was as though we were a nuisance they had to put up with. There were no complaints with the food, but the atmosphere certainly was lacking today. A far cry from when Steven owned it. We keep going back hoping for a more welcoming environment, but this might be the final straw. Too bad. No "good bye" or "thank you" as we left, even though we passed by the waiter. read more

I took friend for launch to the Mandarin Chef. It was a terrible experience for me and my guest. The manager or probably owner showed attitude problem. We walk in the so-called restaurant around 1:00 P.M., as soon as we sat down he shouted that they will be serving launch until 2:30. However we were the only customers. a minute later he came back to take the order. We told him to give us a few minutes to choose from the menu. He raised his voice and said they serve launch until 2:30. I asked him why you are rushing us out when the pa\lace is not busy? It was a bad experience for me and my gusts. I would never go back to this restaurant, not a place to enjoy being with friend. They better improve their behavior and treat customers with respect. I urge people not to even go to this restaurant maybe they learn how to treat customers with respect. read more

This place has been run by the most amazing owners for about 10 years now. Just took new ownership (crab rangoon has changed :-(, but still the nicest people you'll meet. They know your name, remember what you order, it's great food and good portions. I love this place and we eat at a lot of chinese restaurants.
