I had a great experience with Orian for a haircut and blow out. This was my first time going to Mandy's. I showed Orian some photos of my old cut and she spent a lot of time asking me questions and looking at my hair to determine the best approach to what I wanted. She was very methodical, but also so nice and friendly!! I booked another appointment with her for highlights and a cut. This has been my favorite hair salon in Riverdale! The stylists are very friendly and are very nice. They do an excellent job. What's nice about here as they did offer me an ammonia free hair dye which I have not found in many places. I would definitely recommend this place and I will be going back. read more

I took my niece to color her hair today. While there, she complained because she felt discomfort on the back of her neck. When I got home I noticed she had very bad burns on the back of her neck. I believe the burn was caused due to the bleach being left on her hair for too long (over an hour and a half). Her stylist was Sonja or Sonya. I will not recommend this place to anyone. Very disappointed. Post edit in response to the owner: Sonia did not rinse the bleach out after 30 minutes. The bleach was left on for over 1.5 hours. After my niece complained, a little of the bleach was removed (wiped off with a towel). Also, the end result is also poor as the color is uneven. read more

I took my mom here for her birthday ...she did an angular bob and blow out, costs about 70 total (more than worth it) my mom loved it!!! And my mom is picky. The receptionist was nice; Mandy did SO good! My only qualm is I wish she was warmer in demeanor but that's ok, I'm sure she's a busy woman and as long as she's not mean or rude (which I've encountered plenty smh) The place is beautiful, too! I had a great haircut from Orian. I have loose curls, and I have had bad experiences elsewhere when my hair was cut wet and the layers dried weirdly. I requested a dry cut ahead of time, but I went in sort of nervous and wanted to confirm that my hair could be cut dry. When Orian explained the advantages of a wet cut, I did the "no, I know my hair" thing. I've never actually insisted on what I want at a haircut before, and I was afraid a stylist might feel defensive or annoyed, but Orian just listened and made sure she understood what I was asking for. She cut my hair without wetting it, paying attention to where it curls naturally, and the cut came out great. I have washed and dried it a couple of times since the cut and the layers work well with my hair texture. read more

Love Mandy! This was one of the best cuts I've had in a long time without paying over $100! She asked questions that I've never been asked and collaborated with me on what I liked and disliked about past cuts. She really wanted to know what I wanted in detail. WOW!! I'm knocking stars off because I was there for roughly 4hrs for just a balayage and a haircut, which normally takes me 2hrs in another place. I did end up liking my color (after toner) but I did not like my haircut. I should have said something once it was done but after 4 hours I just wanted to go home. read more

It was my favorite Salon in NYC. I would come from far to have my hair cut and color done here. They could be overpriced but still their quality was good. Now no only there is a lack of accuracy on what they are doing but what is worse they have a lack of professionalism. If someone is paying you for something so important as their hair, the very least that you should do is listen to theirs concerns and give an solution. To be good in anything you do you have to know your business and second you must learn how to treat your customers. It is sad because this was my favorite salon but I will not go to a place that the whole experience feels uncomfortable. read more

I was going to save my review but I saw my hair this morning and got upset all over again. This salon is nice but IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR STAY AWAY. I made an appt. for a cut/blowout due to the reviews and proximity to home. Unfortunately my experience was not good. To make things short my stylist did not know how to work with my hair texture at all. She cut my hair wet which I thought was fine until she attempted to blow dry it - it was clear the cut was super choppy. She claimed to have done long layers but she must be an apprentice still because there's no way. She didn't know how to straighten my hair correctly, and used the flat iron so many times I had to tell her to stop. She could tell I was unhappy so she offered to cut my hair even more in order to level out the ends. At that point I politely declined as she had damaged my hair enough. Even more upsetting is the fact that no one followed up or offered some resolution once I complained. On the other hand the stylist disappeared to the back as soon as I got off the chair. Short of everything - including an apology - I paid my bill and left. Its possible I came on a bad day or got the wrong stylist. Its also possible this salon is just not for everybody, if you catch my drift. Might have been my mistake for coming here in the first place but if you're a curly girl, I wouldn't trust all the reviews or pictures. Save yourself the headache and go to another salon instead. read more

Honestly the best service by far. Usually when i get my hair done the hair dresser will burn me while blow drying but here absolutely no burning which i absolutely loved. They are very sweet and work really fast. The place is beautiful and the music they play puts it all together. After doing some research I decided on Mandy's for a much needed trim because it's near my home, the reviews are good and the prices are decent. They also offer a "haircut only" price which is exactly what I needed. I have long, curly hair and normally get a dry cut. I didn't need a blow out or any other service. I've gotten wet cuts in the past but generally have a hard time finding someone who can deal with my hair so I always just get the cut and leave with it wet. (My curls and I have come to an understanding over the years.) I made a same day appointment with Orian. I arrived 10 min early and they took me right back to the shampoo area. Points for no wait time!! The shampoo lady was really friendly and did a good job. I would have liked a stronger wash but that's my preference. (My mom is a retired hair stylist so my scalp is used to a through scrubbing!) She tested the water temp to make sure I was comfortable with it then washed my hair twice before conditioning it. No complaints. I then went to the chair with Orian and she asked me what I wanted. I told her that I like my hair long and asked her to trim just the dead ends. She nodded and went to work. It was strange to me that she was so quiet. I find that most stylists are quite talkative but she did a good job and I prefer that over chatter any day! Overall she just seemed quiet and not very confident. But again, she was nice and did a good job so I'm not complaining! NOTE: Shout out to Mandy for paying attention to Orian and me even though she had her own client! I love business owners who are involved. More points!! NOTE: you can't tip on credit card and they don't take Amex so bring cash, Visa or MasterCard. :) NOTE: When I arrived, a client walked up to pay and the guy in the front told her there was no charge for whatever she had gotten done. She asked for change to tip the stylist anyway. Translation: happy customer. Also, there was a woman there whose hair looked FABULOUS when she left. Translation: another happy customer. When I'm ready for another cut, or even color, I will definitely return and hope for another positive experience. read more

Orian goes absolutely above and beyond - my services took the entirety of Monday's hours and some change, but she managed to get my hair from a brassy dark blonde to my natural black hair with the most gorgeous ash blonde balayage and highlights of my dreams. Mandy also helped a bunch when it came to coloring, and the tiniest details she pointed out made a world of difference. The staff here is very friendly, however I was not listened to regarding my hair cut. I was kind of horrified but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it since I don't know if it would've been appropriate to or not -- but a lot more of my hair was cut than I ever wanted to be. I asked for the minimum to be cut and she showed me how much she would be cutting, but it was much more than that. Long hair that has taken years to grow out to be just taken away in an instant because the stylist didn't listen to me. Everyone was kind though but I just wish that didn't happen.
