I was eating at Jonsey's Fried Chicken across the parking lot and noticed this shop. I looked it up on yelp and saw the numerous positive reviews and accompanying photos and figured I'd give it a shot. I called the number and made an appointment for noon the follow day which was easy. I walked in and promptly sat down and gave him the style I wanted and he went to work. The shop was empty (that's the perk of getting your cut the day AFTER a holiday weekend) so he was able to take a little extra time and 40 minutes later, I came out looking great and feeling even better with my hair finally cut and beard trimmed. Cost was $45 and I added a tip on top of that. I paid cash, but he said he took credit card and Venmo as well.

When I first walked into Goleta Barbers, I paused. As I observed the shop and customers, my reading is that this is a safe, "third place" for men-of-color. A haven free from racist BS. I am an old white guy and I immediately felt like I might be considered as an outsider--maybe even unwelcome. My barber showed up 10 mins late to the appointment without notifying me at all. I had an appointment scheduled for 5:30pm so I showed up about 10 mins early but the doors were locked. I looked inside and no one was in there. I knocked on the doors and called the number on their window a few times but nothing. I waited outside the shop until 5:30pm thinking someone was going to open the door but nothing still. I almost left because I thought they were closed, but I decided to give this place a real chance. So I sat in my car for a few mins and the guy finally showed up at 5:40pm. It would be nice to receive a text message at least saying you're going to be late so I know to wait and not be left in the dark. They have your number because when you schedule online, they ask for it and your email as well. 2. They try to be slick and charge you a little extra for your haircut so be aware: When you walk in, they have a chalkboard sign that says the amount for different types of haircuts and I got the fade which is $40. After the haircut, the barber is able to custom enter a price, and entered my price as $45. When you hit accept, it takes you to a screen where it asks you to tip. I fell for this, unfortunately, and tipped extra when he included it in the pricing without saying he did it. Please look out for this!!! The positive thing was the guy was nice, and my haircut came out great. He even gave me some tips on how to take care of my type of hairstyle.

From the moment I walked in, Chino made me feel welcomed. He asked all the right questions, and it honestly felt like I'd been coming there for years. The atmosphere in the shop is great, too. Most importantly, I love my haircut.
