Mangia has become our favorite Italian restaurant in Winchester. You see a clean kitchen and eager friendly staff when you come through the front door. The food here makes me think there is someone's "nona" in a white apron hidden in the back of the kitchen. The food is classic American Italian fare in ample portions prepared better than most. If you want little stuffed squash blossoms sitting on a big empty plate this is not that kind of restaurant. Caesar salad with shaved Parmesan and optional whole anchovy on top is good and house bread comes to the table with it as it should. The Arancini and Crispy Mozzarella appetizers look and taste homemade. Handmade fresh Fettuccine in a lot of Alfredo sauce is incredibly good and the other pastas and sauces are made in the same fashion. There are the Italian meatballs and sausage and sautéed chicken choices and some fish that come with......plenty of sauce with plenty of cheese and the flavors you are anticipating. The Tiramisu and Torta desserts were good and worth taking home for later because saving room for dessert is a tough task at Mangia. read more

Mangia hit a nostalgic nerve. The food instantly took me back to growing up with my South Philly family and big Sunday gravy around the table. Solid portions, quality ingredients, and prices that won't drain your wallet. Service was great and the ambiance is on point. Bonus: my young boys loved watching the cooks work in the kitchen. That alone made the experience memorable. The only knock was consistency. One person in our party was disappointed with the sausage in the Sunday at Rose Marie's. It was noticeably tougher than the sausage on my sandwich. That said, this place is absolutely worth returning to, and I'd recommend giving it a try. read more

We went here for the first time and had the Monday at Rosemarie's dinner which we split because it was huge. We actually ended up taking some home. I love the Bucatini and overall it was pretty solid, except for the weird look of the short rib. Not sure why they diced it up like that instead of leaving it shredded, but it was a definite turn off for my wife. The bread was decent as was the caeser salad and the soup. Service was great and all the weight staff has uniforms and was very attentive. Not a big fan of the surcharge for using my credit card. Next time I'll bring cash. A group of 8 old curmudgons visited this restaurant for the first time. It was previously a Mexican restaurant. We were surprised with the transformation to a bright, clean and delightfully decorated Italian restaurant. The servers were pleasant and very friendly. Tried the Calamari. It was done perfectly although the arabita dipping sauce was a bit too spicy for me, next time I'll ask for straight marinara. I ordered the rigatoni with vodka sauce and sausage. The entrée came with a well done Ceasars salad. The pasta was well prepared with just the right al dente. Could have used a little more sauce but very good. The portions are offered in half or full sizes. The half size will be enough for all but the most hearty diner. Several of our group got their chicken parm left overs in to go boxes. One negative would be the small amount of bread offered with the meals. A little strange for an Italian joint. Asking for more bread resulted in a $3 upcharge! All in all I found Mangia to be a delightful restaurant with great food and good service. I will be going back to try more foods and their desserts, that we were too full to try on this visit. Home style Italian food for a great price. This place is super cute and right next door to Hopscotch Coffee on Millwood ave. Service was excellent and the food was well prepared and presented. I think of myself as a sort of aficionado of Italian cuisine and while this is not the best Italian food I have ever had, it is very solid. One complaint: not enough of their excellent bread (focaccia) beforehand! First off, let's just say, I am so happy to see a restaurant thriving in this building! Now, the thing that really caught me off guard was the brown wrapping paper on top of the beautiful black tablecloths. I knew about this before I arrived because I normally don't go to a new restaurant without looking at the reviews and I was still caught off guard. All evening long the edge of the brown paper rubbed against my chest no matter how I tried to ignore it. So annoying!! I get wanting to keep the table cloths clean, but why not just put glass over the table cloths like LOTS of other restaurants do?? Or another small table cloth over that one and remove it at the end of the dinner? Lots of linen laundry? Cost of doing business!! I was with a large group and the service was excellent. I think there was only one mixup with orders. One lady at one end of the table ordered a pasta dish with no spice and another lady got her no spice pasta dish and she got the spiced pasta dish. I had the grilled salmon with a Parmesan spinach sauce. Very good! I also had a side salad, broccolini and mashed potatoes with a lovely Italian name. All very good! A wee bit over salted for my taste but that's not unusual in all restaurants. I would definitely go there again although I am not a pasta lover. They have other good dishes to choose from. It is a pleasant, if mildly surreal, novelty to encounter a take on the fare of a checkered-tablecloth Italian restaurant of the old New York metropolitan variety in the Virginia hinterland. Regrettably, the execution is less authentic than the décor. The pasta sauces are unaccountably sweet; the menu's promise of al dente pasta proves false and entirely aspirational; the "Italian" bread belongs unmistakably to that peculiarly American genus of airy, virtually flavorless supermarket loaves; the sausage-and-pepper sub arrives buried beneath an unnecessary blanket of cheese; the sausage itself is enclosed within a casing of such improbable resilience that one is reminded (not happily) of prophylactic latex. It would great if problems like these were solved. I would respectfully prescribe for the kitchen staff a field trip to New York's Little Italy, followed by a brief sojourn along the Jersey Shore, where the traditional preparation of these dishes remains a matter of common knowledge. read more

My wife and I visited Mangia in the afternoon of February 14th, Valentines Day. Though reservations are recommended and we didn't have one the staff was super accommodating and managed to get us a table. We had heard about Mangia and were excited to visit. Everything we heard was positive and they didn't disappoint. We were comfortably seated at a charming table for two and immediately given the VIP treatment. Everyone was super nice and our server, Jaime, made our experience even more enjoyable. We will be requesting him on future visits. The food was amazing and lived up to the hype. My wife ordered the Chicken Marsala while I ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. The Chicken was cooked perfectly, and the Marsala was, in my wife's opinion, absolutely delicious. The dish came with two sizable chicken breasts, a side of Broccolini and Pasta. All were wonderful. The Spaghetti came with two large homemade meatballs, and the pasta was cooked to perfection. Note, the pasta is cooked El dente, and the marinara sauce is some of the best I've ever had. Both entrees came with a choice of side salads and my wife, and I chose the Caesar. We were very pleased we did. The dressing tasted homemade, although we didn't confirm, and the crotons were airy and crispy. We finished our meal with dessert. My wife chose the Gelato and I the chocolate dipped Canoli. The perfect finish. As my wife and I both hail from the New Jersey/New York area, where some of the best Italian food in the country is served, we consider ourselves "snobs" when it comes to judging Italian cuisine. We've been to Mangia twice. The first time the food was good but nothing exceptional. Our second visit was disappointing. We ordered the chicken parmigiana and chicken marsala. Two chicken parmigiana were brought to the table. We were ok with that. Everyone makes mistakes. The server promptly brought the correct meal to the table. What was not ok was the quality of the meals, Both dishes were flavorless and dry and tasted like battered chicken you would get in the freezer section of a grocery store. We were unable to eat either dish. On the up side the service was excellent and the ambiance was nice. read more

Service was excellent. I did not like the paper over the table cloths. More like you'd find at a crab shack than an Italian restaurant. Food was okay, not spectacular. There are other Italian restaurants in town where the food is better. Was shocked that if you wanted more bread it cost $3. You only get 4 small pieces of bread for two people and would have to pay the $3 to get 4 more. Needless to say, we did not get more bread, but would have liked more. Typically, I like to give reviews that have some constructive criticism, in order for a restaurant to improve upon the experience. This restaurant is not one of those that I can do that for. This was an absolutely perfect meal. We happen to visit during restaurant week, which did have a three course meal option for a very reasonable $35. The meal started with fresh focaccia, which was so delicious with the perfect crunch to softness ratio. The bowl of Italian wedding soup was packed full of tender, flavorful meatballs, and the broth was absolutely fantastic. The pappardelle with Bolognese sauce was chuck full of tender bites of beef, and you could absolutely tell the pasta had been made fresh today. The butternut squash ravioli was a nice compliment to the Bolognese, as it was somehow both rich and light at the same time, seasoned with sage and sprinkled with crispy fried cheese pieces on top. Oh, and did I mention that it was dripping with hot melted butter? How can you go wrong? For dessert, I had one of the best tiramisu I have had in the years, while my husband enjoyed his affogato. I would be doing the restaurant a disservice if I did not also give a shout out to the very attentive and friendly staff. Everyone seemed very happy to be working in this establishment. I read all the reviews before my daughter and I went there having high expectations however; it turned out to be a terrible experience. Our server was pleasant and helpful. My daughter and I ordered a drink which was enjoyable. We both ordered the chicken piccata. When the order came, the plates were piled with food. Not appetizing looking. The piccata was dry with harder any sauce, lots of capers though. My first bite of chicken was tasteless and as I kept eating no flavor at all. The broccolini was delicious. My daughter stopped eating because it was not tasting good. We both left most of the food. We left and did not feel good. I had bad pains in my stomach and nauseous. My daughter had the same symptoms but she was shaken. I had pains all night and had bathroom issues all night. Luckily I was feeling better the next day. My daughter was a different story. She was sick all the next day with bathroom issues, shakes and headache. We had to stay another day at the hotel. This illness ruined our plans. Daughter was not feeling well the following day however; we did leave to go to our destination. It was an awful experience and hope no one else experiences eating at this restaurant. read more
