A white wine with didtinctive character
    John L.

We came here early on a Saturday evening, driving up from Sperryville. The drive itself is a treat, winding through the lush Virginia countryside, with the Blue Ridge Mountains providing a scenic backdrop to the west. You almost expect JEB Stuart and the boys to come riding over the ridge any minute. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Arriving at the restaurant, we were struck by its modest size and authentic appearance. The interior is covered in maps and scenes of Italy--attractice and informative. We were greeted immediately and seated promptly by servers who seemed genuinely happy we were there. Not sure why that is surprising these days..... We ordered a bottle of italian wine, which we loved--check out the pictures for the label. We split 2 appetizers between the four of us--the stuffed mushroom caps and the meatballs. Both delicious. Then we split 2 caprese salads between us and each had just the right amount. For mains, we tried the cacio e pepe, lasagna, pappardelle al ragu and branzino. All were very very good. The thing that really stood out to me was all the food seemed lovingly prepared. It felt like the chefs truly cared that the food looked and tasted fantastic. It was obvious they had put great care into their work and it translated into artistic dishes with great flavor. I cannot remember the last time this much culinary artistry came through to me as a diner. If you don't go, you will be missing a wonderful experience.

    Octopus appetizer and focaccia bread

I had octopus appetizer, arugula salad and Supertuscan wine. Food was 3/5- octopus was Ok and focaccia bread was dry and tasteless. Service was 2/5- for no water refill, no balsamic/olive oil to dip the bread, which it desperately needed and no offer of another glass of wine.

We came here for a retirement party. It's almost an hour and a half from DC, so it had to be special to get a good rating. This is totally authentic Italian. The food was just amazing. From the prosciutto, the meatballs, the pasta, the rockfish, and the chicken was just amazing. The desert was also spectacular (have no idea what it's called but just great). The service was great as this is a family so mom was managing the bar, son was the chef and granddaughter was the waitress. As we were at a party with a prefix menu I could not see the full menu, but I do not suspect they do much in terms of gluten-free. The decor is okay. So the story here is really all about the food. But if you are gluten-free, you may want to call and check what options they may have.

    Margherita Pizza

I always come here when I am in town to hike in Shenandoah, so this review is a bit overdue. As a native NYer and seasoned traveler who now lives in the DC area, I have been missing pizza, and am also very picky when it comes to my favorite food. While it is not a Napoli pizza, Osteria Maria gets it pretty close. They understand the crust. I appreciate this place. It is a slice of an ever shrinking Italian American landscape.

Planning golf outing in May and curious if you can accommodate group of 20.? Private room would be ideal.

Hi John! I haven't seen any private rooms in this restaurant. While I can't say for certain that the owner wouldn't allow a group of 20, it would pretty much take up the whole restaurant seating area, so this may be a tough one to squeeze. Best of… Read more

I think you can find something on the varied menu and because it's a small family run business I think they would but I can't guarantee

This is a down home breakfast place where clearly everything is made to order from scratch. When we arrived, there was a woman waiting on a large takeout order. The order was for the wedding party for her daughter who was getting married that day. The bride so loves this place that she wanted her wedding party to share breakfast from her favo spot. So you get the picture. Very simple, very local. We ordered an array of breakfast items that included omelettes, grilled cheese, egg and cheese and pancakes, toast, along with coffee. The service was wonderful, the people who work here are wonderful. The food is good, certainly not great. I am from a bigger city and perhaps my expectations are skewed from that. This is a great place to visit for breakfast just outside of the National Park and it feels nice to support the local business. Just know what to expect.

I've eaten crab cakes all over including several famous MD crab cakes and I work at a fresh seafood market where we make our own crab cakes. So when I say I know my crab cakes.... I know my crab cakes. Talk of the mountain: this is a super cute and friendly small restaurant located on Main Street. It is very local friendly and the kind of place the staff/owners would know your name and your regular order. I LOVE that. The staff are warm and inviting. You can watch them breading your food and chat with them as you eat. I loved watching. We got the crab cake with fried oysters and shrimp plate with Mac n cheese and fries and hush puppies and another fried shrimp plate with their slaw. It was pretty pricey but we expected that when buying quality seafood. The fried shrimp were absolutely incredible as were the fried oysters (minus the pearl my son found in the one he ate... but again not too much of a surprise). The taste was great, the cook time was perfect, they were delicious! The fries were seasoned and tasty as were the hush puppies (nothing to scream about but definitely good!) the slaw was good (according to my son... I'm not a slaw person). The Mac n cheese was definitely different but not exactly mind blowing. I felt indifferent I didn't love it and feel like I needed it tomorrow, but it wasn't bad. I honestly didn't have an opinion either way on it but I did eat it. The crab cake. The good: this was literally packed with crab meat. Obviously we seek out places that Jam Pack their crab cakes with actual pieces of quality lump crab. Talk of the Mountain certainly does this.... In my opinion to the extreme. When they say zero fillers, they MEAN IT. So does zero fillers make a good crab cake? In my opinion not this way. It was not my cup of tea and I love crab and crab cakes (obviously). It seemed like their formula for the binder was a mustard based concoction and then it was solid crab. The flavor left a lot to be desired and it didn't feel like eating crab cake because there was no filler at all. Making crab cakes is such a delicate balance, a true art in my opinion and while TOTM most definitely is serious about ensuring you taste the crab in their "cakes" the end result was more of a pile of lump crab with a sauce. All that being said I would absolutely eat there again. They were fabulous and I truly applaud their style. This is just my personal perspective from the one visit. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area! Rating: my knee jerk is to give this a 4 because I really am not a fan of the Crabcake and would not order it again, however everything else and the people were 10 stars so I feel like a 5 star rating is deserved. If they ever modified their recipe I would try it again happily AND will def eat there again. The shrimp and oyster was phenomenal.
