What an awesome Italian restaurant this place is! The vibe is very quaint inside. You MUST make a reservation. It's a chef and a server. The flow of dinner was very nice. To start we ordered 2 appetizers. They came out timely. They were very delicious! Highly recommend the meatballs and spinach artichoke dip! All of our pastas were cooked to perfection as well. I was in the mood for an Italian pasta meal and found Mangiami Italiano online. It said they were open until 8pm on Saturday, so since it was only 6:30, I decided to take a ride over. From the outside, the place looked inviting.., even had a big free-standing sign on the sidewalk that said OPEN. When I walked in, though, the setting felt dark and dingy. There were about 20 tables total, and only 5 of them were occupied. I asked for a table for one, and the host asked if I had a reservation. When I said no, I was told they were "reservations only." I even asked if they were expecting a big rush, given the number of empty tables and more than an hour left before closing, but the answer was still no. So instead of serving a paying customer, they turned me away. Honestly, what a poor way to run a business, especially when the place was 75% empty. Extremely disappointing experience. Cute little restaurant downtown Fort. Went in on a Saturday night with a friend with a 6:30 resy, but the place wasn't busy. French rosè on the menu was light and crisp and a bargain at $8 a glass. The caprese was good, but with it being summer in Wisconsin I expected whole garden tomatoes not cherry tomatoes. Both pasta dishes were great. Went out on a limb and let my administrative assistant book my Valentine Day dinner here. The place did not disappoint. Perfect date atmosphere as it kinda felt like we were in NewYork city in Little Italy. A different business model as it appears they book a certain amount of reservations for the night and run the dining room with one server. The young man was the hostess, waiter, bartender and bus boy. He excelled at all of his duties! Our cocktails were excellent and our food was spectacular. We both had their special Lobster ravioli and it did not disappoint. We are looking forward to returning and trying other offerings on the menu. My husband and I had Mangiami's cater the appetizers and dinner for our wedding. The food was absolutely delicious; we got so many compliments from our guests. Eric was so great to work with throughout the whole planning process. Before booking, we did a tasting at the restaurant (which, by the way has such a sophisticated and cozy atmosphere) where Eric took the time to check on us and answer all of our many questions despite the restaurant being busy and there being limited staff. Eric was accommodating and flexible with menu planning which we greatly appreciated. Overall, working with Eric was a great experience. Although my husband and I live out of state now, we would love to go back to the restaurant for a nice dinner at some point when we're back in town visiting! read more

The best restaurant between Milwaukee and Madison. I had friends and family visit and they all said that this is the best place. Reservations are needed with what everyone is ordering because all of the food is made from scratch the same day of the reservation is made for. I thought my meal was horrible (the tough overcooked shrimp stopped it from being disgusting). My husband thought his meal was ok. I thought it was unique that the bread was not served before the meal. Though after using the olive oil thats only flavor/taste could be described as old. The bread was delicious and the service was very good. I'm hoping we just hit a bad evening but I honestly don't feel brave enough to try again. If you're looking for a place to celebrate, Mangiami Italiano would not be the place to choose. A group of us had a reservation here one night and we wanted to bring a celebration cake in; however, management refused to let us bring the cake in. After a bit of pleading, they ended up saying we could bring the cake in, but we couldn't eat the cake. Well, what is the point of having a cake sit in front of us that we aren't able to eat? That was enough to turn me off completely, but let me move on to the actual service and food. Our waiter was extremely slow and lifeless. We had to keep asking him for refills all night long. He also didn't bring all of our meals out at the same time, which was weird having to see half of the table with food while the other half stared. I'm not sure why we kept asking the waiter to bring us bread baskets, as the bread was cold and dry. It wasn't worth the carbs at all. I asked if I could order Fettuccine with Salmon since Fettuccine was on their menu and Salmon was a special of the evening and he said no, that there could be no customizations. What restaurant in this day and age doesn't offer special requests? So, I decided to get the Fettuccine with Shrimp and it was the worst mistake of my life. The bland Alfredo Sauce was so rich and thick that even the pasta couldn't hold the cream sauce well. But, what was worst is that my shrimp were not cooked all the way. After eating 1.5 shrimp, I realized they were raw inside and I didn't bother eating anymore of the shrimp. I regret not sending the entire entrée back because the next morning, I was sick as a dog, having to go in and out of the bathroom. I knew it was my dish since no one else got sick. All in all, I wouldn't rush to come back here. The service needs a lot of improvement and the food is anything but thrilling. read more

Drove 70 minutes, partly through a hailstorm to get to Fort Atkinson and wanted to try this restaurant. Looked "cozy" as they say on their Facebook wall from the street through the pouring rain and hail. We made a run for it at 6:45 (they say they close at eight ) and got in the door soaked to see several tables of diners. A young employee said "when we saw the storm, we assumed nobody else would show up. Sorry, we're closed." When my wife pointed out that we are here, you're obviously not closed he said "we're closed." She said "we won't be back." He said, "OK." The hospitality business is apparently not for them. Have been looking forward to trying this place as it's listed in the top 3 of Fort Atkinson. You walk into tables immediately which was kind of awkward because there is no designated hostess area -- also probably freezing for patrons sitting near the door. Asked off the bat if we had a reservation (lots of empty tables) was somehow off putting like we were going to get turned away. We ended up being sat although he warned us that "we don't have any kids menu or high chairs or anything like that" Not rude. Just "chilly" as another review mentioned. Going against the YELP advice we brought our toddler (who is honestly aways well behaved and just watched a show the whole dinner). He ended up sitting on my lap the whole time which was fine. *our waiter ended up warming up a bit but overall We ordered bruschetta (good not by any means excellent or would make me go back just for that) & the fried ravioli - seemed like it was homemade , not with a breading but rather just a fried pasta ravioli - these were good- they were our toddlers meal. Weirdly served with blue cheese & they could just keep it simple and serve it with marinara. Husband had the fish special- just okay & I had the gnocchi. I would not recommend the gnocchi - the sauce was so thick and entire dish was white - very unappetizing at first glance even. The peas in it were the best part. Had a good taste but that sauce needed to be lightened up a bit. Gnocchi is heavy as is. Food took a very long time out from the kitchen and other tables - who listening to their convos, seemed to know the chef- got their food out faster. I have been a customer since they opened. I average about 4 visits a year. I spontaneously stop in and do at times make reservations for days like Valentine's Day There is not a broad choice of menu items but I enjoy lasagna and a seafood spicy pasta. However, I stopped in at 6. My daughter in out of town over the holidays wanted to take family out. It was 3/4 empty and we walked in. Server came to us and asked if we had a reservation. We did not. He did not seat us. Said he was alone and he had to have some boundaries with the owner that did not provide enough server help. We left and went to Fanatico's in Whitewater WI, about twelve miles from Fort Atkinson. We had no reservations. They were full but made room for us. Table for 3. We eat there about 6 times a year. The owner remembered us and did not turn us away. Did was excellent as always. I did reach out to owner of this restaurant and he did respond reaffirming his servers decision to turn us away and that we should make reservations if when we come back. We won't be back. I'm glad this business can turn away business and treat town customers this way. Lots of better choices both were n town and just a town away. read more

Save your money and buy spaghetti O's. Never done a Yelp review before but we felt like we had to give a warning about this place. The positive reviews on this place have to be fake or by the owner and friends. First of all the lay out is just strange, it's very small and you walk right in and there are tables right there in front of you, you feel like you're intruding on the people at those tables. Right away you are not greeted by a hostess, rather the smell of cigarette smoke smacks you in the face and says hello, clearly the staff smokes in the restaurant after hours. On to the food.. it's just a over priced sad excuse for Italian food. To kick things off, the soup my wife had tasted like curdled milk. And there was no broth, it was as thick as Greek yogurt, even calling it soup is a stretch. All our pasta had a consistency and texture like they just dethawed it in the microwave, rubbery like and still almost mushy at the same time!? Not surprisingly it wasn't to busy, but we still waited over an hour for our order, it would probably help if your waiter wasn't also your bartender and had to make all his own drinks, it felt like they were just keeping staff to a minimum, winging it, and barely keeping things together. An almost frantic vibe. The Atmosphere is flat and lifeless feeling. Awkwardly quite and you feel like you need to whisper because the few people that are there are right on top of you, and you can hear every word everyone is saying. It's just very uncomfortable. The decore is out dated and odd, It felt like eating in a retirement home cafeteria, only sadder. It was actually a relief to get out of there and feel like you could breath again. It's not quaint and cute, it's just clostraphobic. For what you get the prices are outrageous. Cheap wine you could get a bottle of at a gas station served for $9 a glass. The menu is tiny and very basic with fancy descriptions trying to make it something it's not. And when you finally do get your food you're left feeling like oh... That's it!? Everything is a la carte and racks up the bill fast! If I had a good thing to say it would be that there are places within walking distance where you can go get a decent burger at least. She did a Very good job but seriously the service could be better with at least 1 more person! Last night we were treated to one of the most fun and fantastic meals we could have ever imagined! As a group of 4 couples we had reserved their private party room with the food ordered as the Chef Eric's Menu. Our server "Sam"was amazing, as he kept us on our toes with his exceptional service and pleasant banter. Everything was served family style, starting with 4 platters of appetizers, followed by 3 different and equally superb salads. The main course consisted of 5 totally amazing entrees, followed up with 3 decadent deserts. $50 per person for one of the Truly most amazing dining experiences we have had in a long time! The private room was cozy with the maximum of 8 people, allowed for conversation, jokes and general enjoyment from 6 to 9 pm without interfering with the other diners. Each and every platter of food was amazing and the total experience of great food combined with good cheer and great friends and exceptional service ranks this at the top of a 5 star experience. read more

Be glad our communities have this restaurant. We where immediately greeted and seated. I started with a nice glass of red wine and then ordered Calamari Fritti. It was a nice blend of small whole and larger pieces. The sauce was well spiced. For the main course I ordered Puttanesca. I really loved the green and black olive combination with the capers. It was served in a large shallow bowl with a great hot sauce drizzled about the rim. The sauce alone could be too hot for some, but was just right along with the Puttanesca. The serving size was just right, I was full but did not need a take home box. We finished our meal with a delicious dessert and cup of coffee. A personal visit from the chef was enjoyable. I wish we had a restaurant like this in Janesville. Return trips are being planned as I intend to go through the whole menu one dish at a time. read more

I can't say enough good things about Mangiami and Eric and his team. Every time we have visited we have had excellent food, service, and ambience. This place is truly a find! The pasta, fish, appetizers, desserts, wines, martinis, ports, espresso...you name it they know what they're doing! Having been to Italy 8 times I can certifiably say this place is worth the visit. I personally recommend the lasagna, pasta regs, pasta rustica w meatballs...but you should try everything. The salads (bacon vinaigrette yes please!) and desserts are to die for. Port? Yes. Espresso? We had the Pasta Rags, which was a delicious and unusual concoction of fresh pasta sheets with braised beef in a gorgonzola cream sauce. It was a surprising, unique, and delightful dish. I went to Mangiami last Friday night for dinner, and it was such a great experience. The best Italian food I've had in the area probably ever. We arrived around 8:30 - 8:45 pm for dinner. There were several tables. I caught a glimpse of the table in the back room as we were seated. That looks really cool for a party, or a larger group. Our waiter took our drink order, told us the specials, and told us that the kitchen closes at 9:00 so we needed to get our order in fairly soon. He was very nice about it. It was no big deal. I'm just used to living in an area where restaurants are open a little later. I had a Caprese salad. The tomatoes, basil and mozzarella were so fresh. It was awesome. For my dinner I had a special. The braised short ribs pasta. It was excellent! Wow! It had an excellent cream sauce with larger almost lasagna noodles, and the braised short ribs were sooooo good. We both agreed we would've paid a lot more for this kind of quality food in Chicago, which we were both very thankful for! I am always impressed when the servers/kitchen respond well to an unexpectedly busy night. I walked in along with a few other couples to find only the server and bartender, but they stepped up and kept things flowing really well. My water glass was never empty, even though the single diner who isn't having alcohol is often easiest to overlook! And my food came out almost too hot to eat. We went here with my mother in law and her husband who are fairly regular customers. They wanted to take my husband and our family for a nice meal. The restaurant requested that we provide our own seat for our daughter which we happily did. Our kids are young (two under 4) and entertained themselves fairly quietly. They maybe got a bit loud twice for very brief periods of time. Someone came out very rudely from the kitchen asking if we would keep them quiet. When my husband said that we could leave if we wanted, the employee said "well if it comes to that." My husband was so offended that he left with our youngest and did not come back. The restaurant still charged us in full for everyone's food even though my husband and daughter never came back. They also still added the automatic gratuity for a party of 6 when only 4 of us stayed to eat. We do not get out much as a family and will never return there. If they do not want families coming then they need to state no children allowed. Excellent meal! I loved the space too, it was very well decorated, and tasteful rather than campy. We ordered the Arrabiatta and the Mediterranean, as well as the Sensual Malbec and J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cab. The wine were delicious. I thought the tasting notes in the menu were spot on, the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The Mediterranean had plenty of artichokes, sun dried tomatoes and olives, though they were green rather than the kalamata I was expecting. The shrimp was large, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The Arrabiatta though was the star of the night. The flavor was so perfect: spicy, savory, with melt in your mouth pasta. Our service was wonderful, attentive and helpful. I have a food allergy and they were than willing to work with me to find something on the menu and made me feel welcome despite the inconvenience. Chef Eric came out to personally check on how our meal went, which is the exact kind of added, personal touch that will have me raving about the restaurant to anyone who will listen. My father, sister, and I had dinner at Mangiami Italiano on a Thursday night after Christmas. I grew up in Fort, but moved away to a big city in the south for work almost 10 years ago. Usually, when I come home, I want my hometown faves, but I'd heard really good things about this place, so I convinced my family to give it a try. SO glad we did! The wine list isn't huge, but it's definitely adequate - our red was even served at a good temperature! My father had the special, which was lasagna. Despite being really picky about his pasta, he loved it and finished the whole thing. My sister and I had pasta dishes off the menu, but we both changed our orders up a little (adding peas to one thing, changing the sauce on another). The kitchen and our server were super nice and accommodating, and everything came out exactly as we'd ordered it. I had the seafood pasta in spicy marinara, and it was exceptional. We ordered the tiramisu to split for dessert, and that was a hit as well. The only thing I didn't love was the caesar salad - mine was pretty underdressed, so I had to order more dressing on the side. My family enjoyed theirs, though. I've traveled extensively in the US and Europe (even did my honeymoon in Italy), dining at very upscale restaurants (I'm a corporate event planner) and this is some of the best Italian food I've had. A wonderful place in any context, but exceptional food for this little, out-of-the-way Wisconsin town. My friend Larry pointed us at this place, and we are glad he did. Four of us arrived for a Friday night dinner. The floor was clearly short-handed; I saw one waitress and one hostess/busser for the entire floor (more than a dozen tables.) so the service was a little slow and a bit ragged; the food more than made up for it. The Garden soup was a wonderful blend of tomatoes, zucchini and spices. Wisconsin seasonal cuisine at it's best, and we all enjoyed it. Larry had the puttanesca, and found himself very satisfied with the blend of olives and capers, with a chile sauce finish. He'd ordered the trout puttanesca, and got that very rapidly when the mistake was pointed out. But I think he actually preferred the "naked" puttanesca. Joy raved about her Parmesan walleye, with good reason. The fish was moist and tender, with a savory Parmesan crust with a nice hint of red pepper. Patty had the chicken cacciatore, and pronounced herself very satisfied with the blend of savory mushrooms and marinara. I heartily recommend one of the four dinner specials, the "Pasta Rags." This melange of beef and Gorgonzola cheese with "rags" of torn sheet pasta had a deep, rich flavor, without (somehow) seeming heavy. The sheets of torn pasta were especially toothy, balanced off against the very tender beef tips -- the entire dish had body without being weighty. I had my doubts for such a robust dish on a hot August night, but it was excellent in every way. The wine list matches the menu -- not deep, but generally well-chosen. I did only see 3 or 4 hearty, solid red wines, and more variety there might serve. Mangiami doesn't follow the fashion right now for fluffy "Italian lite" -- the menu offers mostly authentic (read substantial) north Italian cuisine, but there only a few wines on the list that will stand up to the hot sauce on that puttanesca. Mangiami could hold it's own in any restaurant market. Tucked away in this little town, it's delightful. It is well worth the trip. read more
