When I first walked into Cheese + Wine I was a little confused, there was one gentleman of color and one of Asian descent behind the counter. I was expecting some frou-frou Northern European with an accent like someone gargling hot sauce. Apparently cheese-loving knows no boundaries and come together to make dat bread, chedda' and dough. Steve - has an encyclopedic knowledge of cheese, I challenge you to stump him. He can sound off the name, type and nationality of any cheese in the store with a gag in his mouth, plugs up his nose, and double eye-patches. His patience is legendary because I'm the 2nd most indecisive person in the world, after Bret Favre. Once he gets to know your tastes he'll tailor his suggestions and encourage you to sample every delicacy before committing. Chung - is the master of the gourmet domain; he gives away recipes, knows where to find the best Korean BBQ, and makes his own cheese, which he sells at a bargain. Besides that he stocks the shop with a wide variety of specialty goods, here are some examples -- Refrigerated Provisions: insane collection of hard to find foodstuffs like not from concentrate blood orange juice, sheep's milk Greek-style yogurt, Orangina, organic soy milk, pignoli, semolina pasta and mozzarella di bufala (especially the burrata variety with its creamy center). Dry Goods: you find everything dried, pickled and brined under the sun. Oils from deep green Kalamata olive to fragrant Truffle grace the shelves (keep the bottle as it can be reused once or twice and still retain that sinful essence). Cured meats aren't second-string to cheese at C+W there's; Prosciutto di Parma, Saucisson Sec, Sopressata, and my personal favorite, Jamón ibérico aka Pata Negra with its amber flesh and acorn flavored fat. It's worth every cent of its $89.99 per lbs price tag. Baked goods abound with selections like cranberry + walnut baguette, French country sourdough and every flavor of Margaret's Artisan Bakery Crisps including; almond + caramel + apricot, cranberry + pumpkin seed, date + walnut and the star of the show...goji berry + pistachio. Kitchen necessities like cookbooks, cheesecloth, knives and Fondue sets are available for sale. If you're worried about investing in something as expensive as a Raclette grill shhhh...don't worry...buy two pounds of the cheese and they'll let you borrow theirs' for free. Speaking of cheese, this is what we're here for. Here are some of my favorites -- Prairie Breeze: dry and growth-hormone free hard cheese that I swear is infused with hazelnuts. My newest favorite cheese that I've taken the liberty to nickname, Cheesy F. Baby. Delice de Bourgogne: texture of whipped butter, flavor of a Blue Camembert, but with a hint of sweetness. In the words of acter ternt sanga, Drake -- "Delice, you my everything, you all I ever wanted. I can do it baguette big, bigger than you ever done it. You be spread on everything, other snacks ain't never on it. I want this forever; I swear I can spend whatever on it." Greek Feta: made only from a combination of sheep and goat milk. It's creamier than the Italian version from buffalo milk, and not as salty as the domestic variety from cow's milk. Cheese + Wine is a gourmet market that happens to specialize in cheese but trust me there's something for every dietary restriction, but heed my warning those of you on budgets, diets or both. I can't walk in there without spending at least a Ulysses, not because it's expensive, but because I want everything. You'll have to control yourself from bursting into a cheesetarian rage and scooping handfuls of feta into your mouth like a zombie scooping out brains. read more

My friends got three cheese platters for their engagement party. There is something about getting married where people assume a couple will start consuming blocks of cheese on a regular basis. I guess it makes sense, once you're married there is no need to regulate your cheese consumption. Even if your partner is not on board with it, they signed a legal contract committing themselves to you for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part. Unregulated cheese consumption covers a lot of those things. If I'm single by 40, I'll probably be getting juicers and gym memberships for my birthday. Or maybe my friends and family will give up on me finding love and give me cheese platters too. Enjoying a lovely assortment of cheeses would definitely distract me from the thought of dying alone. Anyway, after the engagement party was over I was lucky enough to use one of the three cheese platters with the soon to be bride and groom. *** Disclaimer didn't really get a chance to taste or buy cheese. I was nearby working and needed a quick bite. The Cheese Store to the rescue! I popped in and asked if they had sandwiches, they did. A selection between an italian, ham, turkey, caprese and cheesy goodness I went with the turkey, brie, lettuce on multigrain for $7 and change. I expected the kind gentleman to make the sandwich then and there but, he gave me one pre-made. Suspect. Suspicions put to bed. This sandwich was simple, fresh and delicious. The fresh turkey was piled in between multi grain bread, with crisp, green lettuce and I would say about 4 cuts of brie. It was a delicious combo that I heartily ate. I ate only half and happily shared the other half with my friend and felt satisfied. It was exactly what I wanted and needed. Looking around the store, they had a great selection of cheeses, with other items such as olives, crackers, and dried goods - all items that would be perfect for a classy cocktail party. Oh, how I wish there was a store like this in Jersey City. (Hint, hint). I'd most definitely pop in for another sandwich if I was in the 'hood and most definitely will come back when I need some cheeeeese for my classy parties and don't wanna trek into the city to Murray's. Seriously? Cheese and Wine has over 75 kinds of cheese. That is just during the summer when they say business is slow. Today was yet another awesome experience at Cheese and Wine. It is a new location just down the street from the old one they moved in about a week ago. They have an entire wall dedicated to wines from around the globe. If you are a big wine lover or just enjoy a good wine you should check them out. Me, I am all about the cheese glorious cheese. This is my heaven. There is also a craft beer section and small area of specialty items such as pasta, oils, vinegars and even mayonnaise. Pre-made sandwiches which are delicious. Today's pick for me was the turkey and cheddar on multi-grain bread. The Mrs. had a ham and Brie on baguette. If you are having a party they cater with several platter options starting at $60.00. Today we picked up some Brie. The staff was very helpful letting us sample the two bries in stock. Can't wait to dig into that. read more

Disappointed. I've gone here a bunch of times. Cool wines. Different stuff. Also, I've gone to their wine tastings. Customer service is the issue. I bought a new Georgian (the country) white wine -$20. Got it home. Tasted like 50% vinegar and mold. Just going wrong. I haven't had too many bottles turn in life. It happens. I kindly returned the bottle (empty) and bought three more bottles saying - hey - it would be cool of you to comp me as this was bad wine. The guy at the counter says ok. I get a call 2-3 days later saying I should have brought in the contents as their distributor wouldn't give them their $ back. I was a bit stunned. Since when is the customer wrong? And what does my purchase have to do with their distribution? Zero. It's not like I said I didn't like it. It was bad. I'd be too embarrassed to say I disliked the wine and return it. Then, I was told it was a natural wine and I didn't understand it should taste odd. Like mold. Jesus.... so they said no reimbursement. My fault. I then said, hey. I'm not in the business of returning wine. I mean, how often could one even try that? Seriously. I'm upset the wine was crap and I'm out the price of the wine. But, I'm more upset they didn't even say sorry. Crap, I would have taken any gesture saying "hey, we are a small shop, and here's a $5 cheese." But no, even though I gave them a 2nd shot at making good on the phone they never called again. So now, as the customer, I was blamed for being the fool who bought their bad wine. Thanks Wine and Cheese for making me out to be the fool and congrats on losing a customer. Well done. read more

I hate being that person that writes a bad review even though I never got to taste or buy anything, but hey, that's part of the experience. I will say that it looks like they had a great variety of cheeses from mid to high end pricing. The wine selection was enough to make any normal person happy, and there were a few other type items such as fig spreads and olive oils. My gripe is that my husband and I went in and walked around looking very interested in purchasing. The only employee that was working who was helping another customer, never acknowledged us. I began to grow impatient as the woman he was helping was one of those "let me try every cheese in the store type", so I mentioned loudly to my husband the one cheese I wanted (hoping this would get his attention). After waiting around for 10 minutes, we gave up and left. Too bad because I really wanted some cheese! I wish he had done the polite thing like said "hey ill be right with you" or tried to take our order while this lady was hemming and hawing away. read more

Cheese + Wine, oh how I love you. This place is an amazing addition to the Hoboken food scene. While the space is fairly compact (it occupies a store front in the creepy/undeveloped Monroe Center all the way in West Hoboken) they pack it to the gills with great products. The cheese selection is phenomenal! I'm strictly a non-blue/cows milk only/not too soft kinda cheese girl (seriously - when I found out Feta came from sheep, I cried but I still refuse to ever eat it again) but they have a wide variety of cows, sheep and goat cheeses ranging the gamut from every day to super funky. In addition to the large cheese selection, they have beer and wine (!), crackers, some charcuterie and lots of interesting snacks and condiments. The staff is amazingly knowledgeable about the products and give great recommendations based on what you are looking for. The last time I was there the guy who was working recommended a Scharfe Maxx which is a new kind of cheese from Switzerland. He told me the back story too - basically the Swiss are super rigid about what kind of cheese their country's cheese makers are allowed to produce (so they were all sort of stuck making appenzeller, gruyere, raclette etc.) but the rules were recently relaxed, so people have been getting cray cray with their cheese making over there. Like everything else I've tried and purchased from Cheese + Wine, it was awesome. There are a few reviews on here that complain about surly service, but I have never encountered anyone who wasn't super helpful and friendly. A few visits ago I actually spent a good 20 minutes chatting with two of the workers about the grocery woes of living in Hoboken and how awesome the Park Slope food Coop is. But even when they aren't super chatty, everyone is great! read more

This place hardly needs yet another glowing review, but I love to hear myself talk (or in this case write), so here you go. For a tiny shop, The Cheese Store offers an awful lot. Go at lunchtime and pick from one of 4 or 5 freshly made baguette sandwiches. Today I had prosciutto, Tallegio, arugula and olive oil and holy moly is it divine. I laugh at my initial plan to go in there JUST to buy a sandwich. As if. I wound up also getting bacon cheddar crackers, aged chevre, a fresh baguette from Balthazar, and Parmesan that will be for grating over pasta but which is so flavorful, I will also be eating it in hunks. The owner is super nice and helpful. I was having a hard time picking a cheese and so I said, "go ahead and help the next person while I look a bit." Instead of leaving me alone, he offered me samples and that sealed the deal for me. I'm sure he could have given me a sample of most anything in that shop and I would have bought it. But he gave me the aged chevre and I fell in love with it. They age a number of cheeses in house, which you can see in a fridge in the front of the store. They also sell various artisan cookies (including the excellent ones from Lark), fresh pastas, and a smattering of sauces and dips and whatnot. Dinner would be almost complete if they sold produce. But that's what the farmer's market is for! read more

This is exactly what it says it is. A cheese store. It's not exactly in the most accessible or popular location in Hoboken, so probably doesn't get the amount of traffic it deserves. I stopped in on my way home from the spa down the street because I'm addicted to cheese (Hello, my name is Courtney and I'm a cheese-a-holic), and I couldn't keep myself from opening the door, even though I didn't NEED cheese (what am I saying, I always need cheese). I got a block of SOMETHING.... I blacked out, surrounded by all the cheese, and I ate it by myself within like 2 days. So yeah, it was good. I didn't realize they made sandwiches, but after reading some of the other reviews, I'd definitely go back to try one. And maybe get another block of cheese or two. read more

Its because they have all different kinds of cheeses you can ever get here. Wide varieties, and I do mean wide varieties! The guy, im guessing he is the owner of the place is super nice! He knows a great deal about cheeses and he even makes his own homemade cheese from what I remember. They also sell different breads there, such as baguettes. I would think this place was French, if I didnt read the name of the store. I just came by to see what type of stuff I can buy there for future reference. Having said that, my wife and I hit this place before Christmas. Selection was paltry to say the least (The pictures shown on this listing are nothing like the selection we saw). Nothing of interest to select from and what we did select from was bad. I don't mean tasted bad, I mean rotten bad. We had a brie that smelled so bad we threw it right in the trash when we got home. Not being sensational here.. I love me some stinky cheese and prefer my blues to bite me back. We swore this place off and were betting it would be out of business before the end of the year. You can just tell that Chung, the owner, runs his business honestly and earnestly. Ordered the same as the last time -- 1/2 lb. each of delice bourgogne and fromage d'Affinoibrie. I also decided to grab some baguettes (they were BOGO... score!). I wanted to use my second groupon offer, but didn't have enough cash to pay the difference so I asked to pay with my card. He told me there was a $6 minimum so I went to grab a bag of chips and the total came out to $5.81 or something... but he still let me use my card anyway. The fromage was so creamy, it tasted like cheese ice cream (sounds gross, but seriously, it was that creamy and good), but the delice was a bit too 'cheesy' for me. Walked in and saw two giant hunks of parmesan - mmm good start. I just wanted to grab the knife and get a big hunk. They have a large selection of delicious cheese and even have an aging cave. They also have a nice selection of condiments. But I am addicted to their sandwiches. They just are the best combination of fresh, delicious ingredients (the bread is balthazar's and I dont know where they get the meat but so tasty). So good I've been thinking about the first sandwich for 2 weeks and just had another and it was soooooo good. I'm hooked. Plus the owners are so nice. Go - you won't be disappointed. read more

Fondue and Wine event This review is purely based on the Fondue and Wine event that I recently attended. The store itself is beautiful and they have a great smallish selection of nicely curated cheeses and wines. The gentlemen hosting the demo was fantastic. In short the event was overcrowded and very skimpy with the actual 'Fondue and Wine'. Costco portions of samples are bigger than what you can expect at this event. The price point doesn't match what you get. I understand that this wasn't meant to be a meal, but it should be enough to feel like you are at least having a snack, especially given that is was over 100$ a couple. The event opens with a description of the cheeses used in the fondue, accompanied by a sample of the three cheeses used. All samples were the size of an orbitz gum slice, cut in half. I have never seen cheese sliced this small. The wine was fantastic but seemed to be hiding. It wasn't a free-flowing wine event. You had to keep asking for wine and you were given a side eye for asking. The event had at least 35 people and the Fondue was made and served in a one fondue pot, the pot size was similar to a fondue starter set that you may gift your 14 year old niece. When suggested that they should fire up a second one given the crowd size, they refused. Picture this, 35-40 people in a single file line, to dip bread, ham, apple or a carrot into a mini bowl of cheese. You get a sample then, get back in a 10 min line to possibly get a second piece of bread. Double Dipping! Icing on the cake, people who went back for second round, where using the same skewers! Verdict: Buy high quality cheese, a french white, a fondue starter kit and host an event in your own home. read more

This place is GREAT. I love cheese and used to go to Murray's Cheese Shop for mine. But, although their selection is not a big as Murray's, the Cheese Shop has a lot of my favorite cheese. They have a wide variety, and all of the trimmings you would need to put together a killer cheese plate. The have lots of specialty foods too. read more

Chung hosts an inexpensive monthly tasting. Last night we checked out the Mediterranean cheese event. You pay $35 and get way more than that in cheese, and are provided with crackers, bread, dried fruit, and water. It's bring-your-own-wine which is great. Burrata? Check. Fresh ricotta drizzled with truffle honey? Check. Local herb infused Fleur du Maquis? Check. So, so, so, so worth it. I came here before a dinner party I was attending. Since I don't cook, cheese is always a safe bet. The guys behind the counter were SO helpful and knowledgable about their products. They have a huge cheese selection and plenty of crackers to stock up on to go along with your purchases as well. I wasn't in the market for wine that day but will certainly be going back to check out their large wine selection. This shop also has cheese and wine tasting nights. I slapped myself for realizing that I have not Yelp'd this gem! I've been coming here for over 2 years and once you visit, you'll never again purchase store bought cheese. Chung (owner) is one of the friendliest and helpful people I've ever met who clearly takes pride in his work. Buying cheese is typically an experience for my boyfriend and I. Chung makes it a delightful one by always offering samples and suggesting new comers to his cheese counter. Customer Service Needs Major Improvement I've been shopping here for literally years. The selection of wine and cheese is great. The store is very nice. I am constantly disappointed in the customer service. The same workers have seen me for years - they never hello - never acknowledge that I may even look familiar after they've seen me for years - never try to get to know me. I signed up for customer rewards and I have no idea what they are for. I've never received an email w/specials, never got a discount on wine... I've spent hundreds of dollars at this store and have yet to receive a single perk/reward. I've never had anyone recommend a wine to go w/the cheese I ordered. I've never had anyone care enough to look at what I've ordered on my profile and suggest anything else I would like. They are one of the few nice wine stores this side of town - if it wasn't for that - I would have gone somewhere else a long time ago. Step up the customer service - even the owner doesn't go out of her way. In addition if someone is ordering cheese - be prepared to wait. The workers do not go out of their way to try to speed up a line ex: one person should do the cutting, the other should ring up the other customers. Pretty simple. read more

Amazing! The guy (didn't get his name) behind the counter let us taste all the cheese we wanted to make the perfect decision. Then he let us taste the wine as well to compliment the cheese. They have a big selection of Raw cheese, which is an even bigger plus. The bottle of wine we bought called Fattori, super good. I want to love this place as I've had great sandwiches there. But recently I got the same sandwich three separate times and each time was a different price. First time I got the sandwich and chips for $8.98 Second time: $11.12 And the third time the sandwich alone was $9.62 I couldn't justify adding chips to that and spending probably $13 for a small sandwich and chips.
