Ok so I visited one of these places in Los Angeles California a while back my family owns a restaurant close by so thought I'd set an appointment and give it a go. I sent a picture of what I was looking for in my style. upon my arrival I was told he wasn't able to do it because the style I wanted required razor work and would cost extra hmm I know the difference between a taper and high fade but I played along the issue came down to time and the fact that I selected selected a style that is a high fade that would cost extra so I volunteered the extra even though the fade is included in the cost. Area for improvements If you see a style that requires more work reach out to the customer to make sure that you iron out the details. And address concerns or clarification when it's the shop that has an issue. 5 other shops would have taken my business if the work was to much to fit into your time window. The fade looked great until I got home and started looking at the details more carefully the left side of the fade left out the details on the front part of my head and right side was cleaned up to make the fade consistent. Also my definition of a fade vs a cut you fade your razor into the fade which I asked for #1 fade so that means a 0 razering into a #1 fade at the high fade point. The location in my opinion was a tossed salad they had a very nice 30s and 40s Gentleman theme going and the music to match it. A New York Barber Theme or Old Town Los Angeles Theme but then you added Portland clown culture to it. Multi color chairs like a circus trash em, old generic barber chair with worn and torn leather not consistent with the theme colors of more black and white and bolder colors at all compliments a old style faded green which I noticed was chipping at the base of the floor. They have lots of older pictures of old 1941 Chevy's and wise guys in suits and few other photos that make the place look decent but then ruined by throwing in a deer head on the place and several other sloppy things to the walls like adding manwich to an Italian spaghetti dish. Cmon if ain't broken don't mess it up like you did. You made a nice shop look like a circus. Drinks are Makers Mark and some kind of off branded tequila which to me is lower shelf quality. Self Served out of shot glasses or a coffee cup with coffee next to it. The temperatures of the drinks are room Temperature no ice available. For $35.00 for a fade that isn't even a fade. I'm very disappointed in the experience from a company that has so many locations I expect your price to match your quality. I wouldn't mind a refund for the job and poor experience. read more

Just moved to Portland a few months ago. Roommate said to check out Manly. Made an appointment online, with 1st avaialbe in about an hour. Tony was my cutter. Told him what I wanted and he delieverd. Wish I had more to tip him but will be prepared next time whom ever I get. Definate cruiser/biker/Harly vibe. Everyone seemed cool. I honestly hate leaving bad reviews. I love supporting local. But I went in expecting a more thorough beard trim and I was disappointed. All the work done I could have done with my own trimmer for free, given the expectation set by the reviews. I told the lady it was a beard trim for my wedding, and I asked for a slit on my eyebrow. She ended up cutting my eyelid and it had to be edited out of the professional pictures. read more

Appointment cancelled twice in three days by Jax. First, I want to say that I have difficult hair (coarse/cowlicky). Jax is one of *four* different barbers I've seen at this location, and she did the best job. I've seen her several times. This is important later. Back to the cancellations. First time was via text at 10pm the night before (had a 6:30pm appt the next day, a Wednesday, so fairly close to 24-hr notice); second time, two hours before the rescheduled (7pm, Friday) appt. Reasons given were, in order: "something came up and I have to work at the other location" and "power outage so we had to close the shop". (She apologized both times.) I checked PGE's outage map out of curiosity and saw nothing amiss for their location. Hope they get their circuitry fixed, I guess? Sounds like a problem. While she offered an alternative barber for my first appt, I declined as I wanted her to do my hair. The second time, she suggested a couple alternatives for the weekend and said the cut would be free. I appreciated the offer, but the suggestions were barbers I'd already tried and not liked as much. I had an important event coming up that I didn't want to take chances on with my hair. Unfortunately, I decided to pass on both the cut and this shop after this experience. read more

Manly & Sons is a new addition to the Hawthorne strip, a classic den of bartenders for men, in the simplest sense. There's a little backstory to this place, so I'll share it. Manly & Sons was first opened in LA by a guy who used to cut hair at in Portland. Recently, the Modern Man (a mere few blocks away) imploded. Rumors of mismanagement, bounced paychecks, etc. So the best barbers from the Man struck out to set up shop in this new Portland outpost of the LA original. And I followed. Sure I often get my hair cut by Vinnie down at Vinnie's in the Ford, but sometimes I spread my business around, and Eric Katzenbach, who I originally discovered at MM, is my other #1 choice for cuts in this town. He's a whiz with the clippers and puts a lot of care into his craft. He's also a nice, low-key dude who's super easy to get along with. Someone I don't mind having a straight razor close to my spinal cord. In short, I trust his hands. So I followed Eric over here to Manly & Sons. M&S ditches the kitsch that was abundant at Modern Man, and keeps the best things. The shop is stocked with excellent barbers and they sell quality hair and shaving products (as well as some ties, socks, and other men's furnishings). You can drink whiskey or beer while getting your cut. The decor is simple and straightforward. It's a place where dudes can stop in and get groomed. I'll definitely be back. From the moment you walk in to this establishment you are greeted with a friendly "hello..." and then they offer you something to drink, Water, Coffee, Beer, or Whiskey- pretty awesome. Most of my experiences here have been nothing but amazing- I usually go with Jax because she was the first barber I went to. The other guys have their regulars too and they all do a very good job. I called on a Sunday morning the barber said he had time later that day. I got there a few min early and he was ready for me. He talked the entire time to his coworker. I had asked for a high bald fade. I did not get a high bald fade and he did nothing about fading my side hairs onto the top of my head. No wonder it took him 20 min to complete the job all the while assisting his coworker. Honestly I've never had this bad of a hair cut. And it was the most expensive hair cut. I typically wouldn't just go to Yelp for a review like this but this was especially bad. I would never recommend the male barber there with a mullet. This is really the best barber shop in Portland. It has that great vintage barber shop vibe, but with great energy. I go to Chris to get my hair cut and beard wrangled back into shape. He takes his time and gets everything right. I never come home to find a stray beard hair that's too long or my lineup to be uneven. Plus, they're all super nice cool people! This is not an easy review to write, I've been a regular customer of my barber Randall for more than a year, at his old shop (which shall remain nameless) - he does a great job, and continues to offer a great haircut... However my overall review is tainted because of the experience at the new establishment, I feel it is not appealing at all to me or my family. The decor is mostly spotted with pin-up girls and the only magazines to read are adult nude magazines. It's not the upclass feel that I expected and made it really uncomfortable for a family man. I was downright embarrassed that my wife and son came with me to wait (as she often does). She mentioned to the front desk staff some her feedback about how she felt about the table full of playboys mags and the response was very dismissive of her feelings rather than appreciating all customer feedback. I would suggest a more rounded approach in the assumption of men's interest - Can you offer a wider variety of décor and reading material? Sports, Music, Fishing, Travel, Money, Philosophy, Politics, Clothing Style, Fitness, Camping, Survival, Martial Arts, Guns, Food, Video Games (how about a game system?) Unfortunately, I plan find a new barbershop that provides a better overall experience and am sorry to lose my regular barber unless Manly and Sons Barber makes a bold change to the customer experience. read more

If i could give it a zero rating I would. I walk in at 6:00pm and there is not one customer. Only 3 employees who one is drinking a beer, and one mopping, and one sitting doing nothing. I ask if I can get a hair cut and they say "no we're all booked up for the night" as they all just stare at each other awkwardly trying to decide what to tell me...I walk back 30 minutes later and there is still not one customer. I got my first haircut at Manly and Sons this week, and it won't be my last! I booked my appointment online for the services I wanted (cut, beard trim, beard line-up, and straight-razor shave). I exactly got the appointment time I wanted, just after work. Street parking was really easy. I showed up, and Mike T. took great care of me! The shop itself is new to Portland, but the barbers aren't. Some of PDX's best barbers work here, and it shows -- bad hair walks in, great haircuts walk out! The place has a real barbershop vibe; these guys are The Real Deal. This is just like the place my dad took me when I was a little kid.
