Ok! Girrrrl! Let me start off with saying I haven't got my hair cut in 3 years, besides my Bf cutting my pandemic hair. I generally avoid avoid salons at all cost because of my own anxieties and feeling judged by all the beautiful people. I'm a Tina Belcher kinda girl and have just been getting by with my own trims. I had looked for a salon to get my hair done at for quite a long time. To the point that I would still go down to the Bay Area and see my parents + get my hair done there. Then I went to Rachel Strong at Mod Salon and all of that changed. I have extremely long and fine hair. Naturally a brunette with pin straight texture. Somehow Rachel was finally able to balayage my hair into a cool toned ashy brown and silver ombré perfection. I have been trying to get my hair to do this for literal years. Never been really fussy about my hair, came in for a balayage, showed some pics, got something completely different. Tried to embrace it, but the color was too green-ish and made me look like I'm 10 years older or ill - just bad for my skin tone. Called the salon and they were very cool and friendly about it and said, "Yes, of course, we want you to love it, come in we'll fix it". Great. Came in. The stylist and the salon manager looked at my hair. The manager said to the stylist right in front of me, "OMG, you did such an amazing job!" Uhmmmm clearly no, since you have an unhappy customer sitting in a chair right there. They didn't charge me the 2nd time, I also mentioned I'm happy to pay, I just want it fixed (as in - please kindly give me what I asked for). The salon manager and the stylist both (without really listening to me) said they know EXACTLY what needs to be done. Got me 2 tones darker, that's about it. It somewhat got better in terms of making the greenish tone go away, but I went from roughly a 7 to a 5, no definition, no contrast. My hair looked like a rag because it got dyed twice over the course of less than 2 weeks. Overall, the stylist was very friendly and accomodating and I'm sure she is very talented, but it really really does help to just LISTEN to your client's needs. Tried to wait it out, but ended up going to another salon, got a good chunk of my *now damaged* hair chopped off, and luckily the stylist at the other place was able to fix the color and integrity of the hair. read more

I went in for a huge change. I hadn't had anything more than a trim in two years. Hadn't had short bangs in seven years. I asked for 70's bangs(curtain bangs) and several inches taken off. Stephanie was the second stylist I've seen since moving to town, and my search is over. I'd wanted to transition back from years and years of reds to my more natural color (which is something of a mystery to me), and something easier to maintain. She thought carefully about how to lift all the old brassy color out of my hair and talked to me about how we could transition the color. I felt very comfortable that she understood what I wanted, and that I was in capable hands. She NAILED IT. I'm so happy with how the color came out, very natural, with nice dimension. And the cut was perfect. Since then, I have also seen Alison for a cut and color, because Stephanie was out of town. She also did a beautiful job! The salon itself is roomy and nicely decorated. I got my hair done by Kiki yesterday and she was AMAZING! My hair was very damaged and with a 4 month old I just don't have time to be keeping up with getting my roots done so I was planning on just chopping my hair off and dying it all brown so I didn't have to deal with it anymore. She suggested that because summer is coming up instead of going all dark to bring my roots down so they blended out, that way it would be less upkeep but still light for summer. It was an awesome suggestion and I'm happy she said something because I'm so much happier with my hair than I would've been otherwise. Now besides the awesome hair she was just an overall awesome person. Hair stylists are usually friendly people and ask you questions about yourself and all that but Kiki was very funny and easy to talk to so it didn't feel so forced like many other times I've gotten my hair done. Katie is just fantastic. With years of box color on my hair (brown, purple, red, you name it), she is currently walking me through process (and believe me, it's a process) of going blonde with total honesty and transparency. She's taken the time to understand my hair, and understand what it will take to help me reach my goal. After my first visit, I felt uncertain whether I had received the amount of blonde I should expect (and I honestly shouldn't have expected much, given the state of my hair), so I sought a second opinion. The stylist suggested I reach back out to Katie and talk to her about my concerns. A day after I had spoke with someone at Mod Salon, I had received a text from Katie while she was on vacation with her family, asking to schedule another session. She squeezed me in a few days later, and although I was insanely nervous to confront her, she was incredibly compassionate and understanding, and she totally addressed all of my concerns. I love the feel of this place! The staff is very friendly. The salon is very clean. Thorough with COVID precaution. Took my temperature when I arrived, and asked about any symptoms and exposure to COVID. Stephanie did my hair. I had horrible COVID grow out, had to get color correction, because of the incompetence of the person who did my hair at a different salon. I had to have two visits with Stephanie to fix my hair. The final result was great! She gave me a great recommendation of a protein hair mask to use at home. Wow! What a difference! As much as we had fun at my hair visits. She didn't want to see me for at least two months! I was heartbroken. Who was I to have girl talk with? Who was going to spoil me with my hair? Who was going to make me look beautiful? (I am hot. But, she made me look much hotter). I begged her to change her mind! I cried like a baby! Just kidding! I have over processed my hair from bleaching it so much throughout the years. I'm a brunette, trying to have Elsa/Daenerys hair. Stephanie doesn't want my hair to fall out, and look like Cinderella's ugly step-sisters. Stephanie is not a selfish person, and wants me to have beautiful, and healthy hair. I'm planning on seeing her again in April. My last visit with her was in December 2020. My hair has had time to become stronger, and healthy enough to finally achieve my Elsa/Daenerys look. Especially, with the protein hair mask that Stephanie recommended. I came to Katie Barnhart when my usual stylist of 9 years (whom I adored!) was out on maternity leave. I left super happy with my cut - Katie made a few small changes that made a big difference! And when my usual stylist decided not to come back to work, I knew I wanted to stick with Katie. My hair is long, with a lot of wave, and a mind of its own. I prefer being able to just get up and go each day, without having to fuss much. Had high hopes for this salon and left with a pretty mediocre haircut. Pixies are very hard to cut and require precision and attention to detail. My overall experience was very rushed and the haircut was very sloppy in the back. I guess I wanted to grow out my pixie anyways so probably it's the time to give up on Portland hair salons until my hair is at least shoulder length. The next day update: the more I look at myself in the mirror the more upset I get. This salon wasn't a cheap Chinese chop shop, but the quality of the haircut I got is the same if I spent $7 instead of $70. No person should feel 10x uglier after going to a hair salon, mind that it wasn't a drastic change for me to begin with. This just really sucks horribly. I have no idea how to live with this horrible haircut for the next month until it grows out at least a little bit to be fixed by someone else. read more

Really love Shelby! Had my first blowout with her last Friday and I am still looking like a rockstar 7 days later! Can't believe I stretched it out soooo long but got compliments all week too :). This is my first blowout after my Brazilian blow out with Sean at de stilj but I still cannot believe how smoothe and resistant to Portland's humidity and rain this blow out has been. Her technique is great - very thorough blowout with appropriate tension using round brush technique only that I requested and preferred. Also like that she is skilled with layered cuts and utilizes the French technique of dry cutting. She is also so very sweet and fun to chat with! Sad news though - Shelby is moving away from Saturday booking this Summer 2018. Since I love my regular Saturday blow outs, will have to restart my search again for my blowout queen once she stops her Saturday appointments. But for now - I have found my go to gal! read more

It was average honestly, I got a partial highlight and I felt like they could've been place better and less streaky. She rushed washing my hair and didn't even let the conditioner sit for more than a 15 seconds, my hair is super thick and dense and my hair was breaking off cuz it was so dry and she kept running out of dye and still missed spot so I have a few blond streaks when I just wanted auburn. I told her I didn't wanna be charged a for a style so I was gonna air dry but she offered a blow out but my hair was dehydrated, tangled and still damp when she was done and she cargoes me and extra $40 not sure if it's because the blow out or because she had to use double product but either way my hair wasn't silky couldn't even brush my finger across it and she missed sun highlights with the dye so either or not what I expected if you want high end gotta go somewhere else with higher price read more
