I had a poor experience with Manny back in February. His suits were old and tattered or coming apart at the seams. The regulator I used had scum on the mouthpiece which seems really unsanitary. And his mask kept leaking...he didn't initially believe me which also soured the experience. The issues with my mask flooding caused me a great deal of anxiety. Instead of being empathetic or trying to understand my concerns, Manny kept telling me, "I can't force you to have fun!" I read another review where it was mentioned that Manny seems to be inpatient with "difficult" students, and I would wholeheartedly agree with that statement. The other person who was present shared that he also felt Manny's equipment was subpar. This gentleman didn't even bother coming back for the 2nd dive day. At least Manny refunded me the camera/photos fee after I asked him... although he initially quickly exclaimed he couldn't refund me the whole charge (which I didn't even ask for). I feel like his quickness to defend his fee might be indicative of this not being the first time someone has felt like the whole experience was just an expensive waste of time and hope... I was originally going to give Manny a higher rating but after thinking through it, I didn't feel I should conceal this information from others about to make an investment in diving. I luckily did one dive with the boat captain on the first day, who loaned me her mask and she took me down. I did a full mask clear and swam for nearly 30 minutes. So, I don't think my negative experience can be pinned on me not wanting to have fun, not being capable of diving, etc. Definitely wasn't worth the money diving with this instructor and had I known the experience would have been so negative, I would have much rather paid more to go with a more experienced instructor who isn't so dismissive of safety concerns. read more

Manny was super kind and asked me to leave a 5 star review. He was one of the more personable dive guides I had on the island in a while, thus I obliged. However, something happened during the dive I was not thrilled with. I told Manny I really wanted to see an octopus. Manny ensured me he knew where to see them. Once at the bottom, Manny pulls a 6" long metal screwdriver out of his tec shorts, and starts prodding the holes of the reef blindly. Sure enough he jabs an octopus hiding in its hole and the creature abruptly zoomed to another hiding spot. To which manny chased and continued to poke it to try and expose it. I mean. I guess I did get to see an octopus... I was surprised and bothered by the marine life harassment, but Manny had really catered to our group with a previous issue, and was friendly so I did not let it shadow the rest of the good service. I must update my review now: A few months have passed and I have read on multiple scuba forums of different people on different occasions having this exact experience I did. Some even more egregious. Manny. Please respect the marine life! Being a guide and instructor, people will learn from you and copy your actions. Poking, grabbing, and making octopus ink isnt cool. In another scuba forum I saw a new diver asking if this is okay to do because his instructor manny in Hawaii did it. I liked your personality bro and you obviously know how to dive. Overall, very unprofessional, impatient instructor, horribly unresponsive communicator, and a gaslighter. Stay away at all costs. Initially, I wanted to support a local small business as opposed to a big dive shop, and eventually wasted hours of time painfully communicating with him to finally get in hand 1 out of 2 certifications I paid for. We did our dives in November after paying $850, when he gave me a general idea of 7:30a-230p the first day and 10a-230p the second day. However, he wouldn't text me where/when to meet until 11p the night before the first day and not until the morning OF the second day. Each day was very rushed and ended up being half the time he had proposed, despite us being his only 2 students those days. During the training, he was very impatient. He gave us no reading materials beforehand, and we went straight to the beach for him to explain all the equipment and skills. English is my wife's second language, though she is fluent and did her PhD in the USA. Nonetheless, Manny was very rushed in explaining skills/equipment from the get-go, and when she would ask for clarification or for him to repeat more slowly the jargon-heavy SCUBA language, he would be very condescending and blame her for not being able to understand immediately. On the first open water dive, she ended up inhaling salty ocean water at 40 feet deep during the mask clearing skill, which created the sensation that she was drowning. Of course, she freaked out and when we got to the surface, she was shaking and crying. The response from him and the boat captain were literally, "You're so dramatic." He also picked up and played with a live conch, despite PADI's clear standards of protecting ocean wildlife. In the end, I completed my 4 dives and my wife only 2. She's scarred from this experience but will still complete her certification elsewhere. From the beginning, he only had me fill out the medical clearance form, sign a waiver, and complete the book exam. When I asked if she would need to sign these forms, he said, "Later." It seems like he expected her to fail before we even started. Without warning at the end of the 2nd day, Manny said he had to leave, and that we'd have to meet on a 3rd day to finish the final exam. We had plans already and couldn't meet in person, so he said I would have to go to a local dive shop in California to finish. After I returned, I spent hours on the phone with multiple dive shops explaining this situation, and all said this was clearly not protocol. Manny would always reply, "It's simple - just drive to a dive shop, show up, say I'm here to take the test," which I actually did one time, and they of course refused, as he hadn't sent me the dive logs. Finally, Manny agreed to schedule a time to do the test by FaceTime. For months, he would ghost my texts to schedule, until I finally told him I would submit a Venmo request refund. He then finally sent me iMessage photos of the exam from a book, and I sent back my answers that night. After another couple weeks of ghosted texts and me actually contacting Venmo, he finally processed my certification last night, saying "I did this two days ago, it's your fault you didn't check your junk mail," when clearly I got my certification email from PADI minutes after I told him about Venmo. He still has yet to send the dive logs... He also said another thing that creeped out my wife. "After I learned to dive, I had the choice to work for the military, oil rigs, or instead be able to watch beautiful tourists in bikinis all day, so the choice was obvious." - Manny, introducing his PADI history to me and my wife, who was standing there in her bikini. Combine that with a Yelp reviewer who caught Manny looking through his cell phone, and you have an idea of who you're dealing with. Overall, I'm very disappointed with this experience and do not think that Manny brings a good name to the PADI brand. read more

Kalana booked a Guided Discover Scuba diving session for me with Manny. How I felt: Understood/heard, safe with Manny I appreciate how extremely patient you were Manny, you have no idea! I'm grateful for you. It was definitely all worth it for me after seeing all the colorful fish and octopus! Manny made some magic underwater and I was able to see the most beautiful colorful fish an inch from my face!! Phenomenal experience Manny! Beyond the experience I was expecting! I even loved the octopus sighting! It was a great experience for me especially for it being my first time scuba diving. Manny brought 2-3 extra water swimsuits for me which I appreciated. Flippers and goggles included. Everyone was so helpful trying to help me get into my swimsuit as well as going in and out of the water with the tank. Everyone was quick to respond, I loved that. The thing that stood out the most to me was Manny's energy and responses towards me. Usually I'm a fly/run type of person when it comes to my first experiences and people tell me to take baby steps, but I was more to slow down for this diving session. As Manny was explaining the skills, I let him know that It does take some time for me to understand verbally as I am a visually learner. I told him my brain can't compute a lot at once. Lol He made me feel extremely understood and safe which were very important to me and made my first diving experience amazing. I felt he had a calming demeanor and he didn't try to rush me which actually helped me more than I admit to say. I'm going to be vulnerable and say that I was very transparent with him and used my words to make known that I had only one fear, "that I'd forget to breathe under water." I really do owe it to Manny who responded in a calm and understanding manner throughout my whole experience. I told Kalana, "if my experience was with someone else who was dismissive or otherwise, i probably wouldn't have gotten into the water." And that's why I tipped $40!! I do not recommend for getting your PADI certified here. I would give zero stars if I could. First of all, instructor Manny seems only good at dealing with the "easy" students but loses patience very quickly with the "difficult" students. My girlfriend was freaking out when she stepped into the ocean and Manny pushed her into the water without waiting for her to calm down. At that time, I didn't even see she had her regulator in her mouth. It was too uncomfortable for my GF and she finally gave up that dive. What shocked me is Manny blamed her failure on not listening to the class and always looking for excuses rather than they did not establish mutual trust in the ocean environment. After my GF decided to give up the course given the unpleasant experiences, we asked for a reasonable refund for the remaining 2 boat dives which had not started. Manny firmly refused. He was quite rude at our discussion and blamed even more on my GF for her own faults. He yelled in front of my GF that everyone else in the class can do successfully and it was her problems that she couldn't. Horrible! My GF had a mental hurt. She said she would never do diving again. Other things I noticed about the poor practice for their certification course. 1. Confined water training was on the shallow beach rather than a swimming pool. First-time divers, especially people who are afraid of the ocean do not build up enough confidence in the confined water and are then directly taken to the ocean. 2. They push you to do everything fast, like marking checkboxes on PADI open water requirement cheat sheets but lacking practice. For example, the "out-of-air" rescue was just one time training without really consolidating the techniques; underwater navigation was taught very casually; no fish identification module which could help divers identify potential hazards. 4. Their boat goes out 2-3 trips a day as they want to have high throughput of their "certification production line". For 2 tank dive, they leave even less than 10 minutes in between. They try to make another trip to bring another group of students. Google "interval between each dive" to learn why this is bad practice. 5. I even saw them take a student directly to a boat dive without taking them to confined water sessions. This was completely against the PADI training procedure. 6. I went with them one dive trip. Before surfacing, they even skipped a 3 minute safety stop. Unbelievable! 7. I cannot see their respect for the ocean. They touched reefs, and played the octopus. I came to Hawaii with an ambitious goal - get scuba certified in less than a week. I was referred to Manny by another dive company, so you know he has good rapport with other locals. He was very easy to get ahold of and super accommodating. He was able to schedule our dives promptly and safely, so my lungs wouldn't explode on the flight back. So my first boxes were majorly checked Once we were on the boat and in the water, I found Manny to be very calming. Outside the water he had ample patience explaining the techniques I was going to need to demonstrate while in the water, and he was excellent at demonstrating them in the water. I always felt as though he and his crew would ensure I understood before proceeding. He even met up with me at a coffee shop to do my written exam at a time that fit into my schedule. Was gifted a lesson for my birthday! The instructor Manny was very patient and he made me and my friends feel very safe.

I'd do zero stars if it was an option. We gifted our three teenagers scuba certification as a Christmas gift this year, and they were all very excited to spend the week after Christmas getting certified. This didn't happen because of Manny and his lack of professionalism and it was one of the worst experiences I've had. Manny cuts corners and does not prepare you for diving at all. The week before Christmas we reached out to him to find out how we would access the PADI e-learning and he told us he didn't offer that and it would only be available for an extra $100+, should have been the first red flag. We showed up at Magic Island, and waited for an instructor for an hour, who never showed. Manny, who wasn't on island, apologized and we arranged to try again the next day. At which point, Manny had another instructor from a completely different dive shop, there to fill in. This older gentleman started the morning by informing us that he hadn't slept the night before, and was in a bad mood, the second obvious red flag. His gear was out of date, and in poor condition, he didn't have my kids do swim tests, or fill out any of PADI's medical forms, and just put them in the murky water of Magic Island and expected them to complete the dive skills with little to no instruction. My oldest, who, at 19 is an avid swimmer, surfer, snorkeler, spear fisher struggled to clear his mask completely due to faulty equipment and a lack of instruction. At this point, the gentleman decided to stop the class, told my teens that they could swim around the lagoon and then told them that they had failed the first day and wouldn't be able to continue in the afternoon. This is after less than one full hour. Manny called me and told me that my kids had decided to quit for the day and I would have to pay an additional $150 to continue trying the next day. When I pushed back as to why the instructor hadn't helped my kids or given them additonal instruction on how to clear a mask, and told him that they had not quit, the instructor had decided to quit for the day, Manny told me that my kids were lying, and that most parents assume their kids are exceptional, but that my kids clearly just couldn't handle scuba diving. The situation deteriorated further with Manny being extremely insulting, abrasive and rude the entire time. I asked for a refund, and he told me he would only offer a partial refund because he had already paid for boat seats for that afternoon and would have to pay the instructor. This turned out to be a lie, I reached out to the instructor that afternoon, who apologized for his lack of teaching that day and told me wasn't going to charge anything. It took me days, and multiple awful phone conversations where Manny insulted and gaslit me, to get my refund, who only gave us our money back after we threatened to report him to BBB. Also, the refund was short $150 because he refused to refund what he had spent on the boat seats. No beginner is ready to go out on a boat dive after less than an hour of scuba instruction, and with no learning materials. We decided to go with Dive Oahu after we eventually got our money back and the difference is shocking. For the same price we paid Manny, we had the online learning materials from PADI, which my kids completed before getting into the water. That price also includes three days of instruction in a pool before doing two mornings of shore dives. My kids have had zero problem completing any of the skills and the instructors have been polite, friendly and extremely helpful. Manny makes the small local providers here on Oahu look pretty terrible, which is a shame because we really like supporting local small businesses. read more

I should have read the reviews before booking with Manny :( What a disappointing way to deal with customers! I initially reached out to him requesting a two-tank recreational dive and a refreshed course for my Advanced Open Diver certification. Manny told me that a refresher course will not be a problem and will be a $40 extra to the $155 they charge for the 2-tank dive. Manny specified that a refreshed will be done before the two main dives and will require an additional tank, but since I am an Advanced diver there will be no need for a lagoon session and we just do it in the ocean once at the dive site. On the day of the dive, my husband and I were 2 of 4 people the instructor is responsible for. The other two were getting their certification and had to do some skills tests. The entire first dive we spent on the bottom right under the boat, me taking my mask and regulator on/off and the rest of the time just waiting for the rest of the world group to be done with their test. I though back then that it's a very lame refresher and I don't feel "refreshed" at all, in fact the instructor didn't walk me though anything. But it was ok for $40 and I was excited about two other proper dives. The second dive was great, we were still a group of 4, didn't go beyond 35ft, so not really an advanced dive but it was pretty. After that the boat just turned back to the harbour and before we knew it the experience was done. We were communicated 2pm-6pm but it was more like 3pm-5:30pm in reality. We did the dive 48h prior to our flight home, so there weren't that many options to reschedule. When I reached out to Manny asking for a missing dive I offered some time slots in the near future but he was fully booked. I then asked for a refund for a missing dive and that is where is got ugly. I was told that it is a refresher he is ready to compensate, not a full dive and that me hanging out at the bottom with other students was in fact my recreational advanced dive (and I guess I never did the refresher ...?). I was told that it is "not fair to refund me" and that it's my problem that I can't come back and claim the dive when he has time available and that "Ppl come on vacation and don't understand some ppl have to work for a living" and that "Not everyone is on vacation here". This persons business is there to steal your money for the least amount of work possible. Apparently, despite agreeing on a specific date and paying for it, Manny feels entitled to change the terms of the contract as he pleases and decide that it's "not fair" to refund you for the services his business failed to provide. read more

I did my PADI Open Water Certification with Manny's Diving Adventures. I chose to do my certification in 2 days - so the first day was the confided water portion then 2 boat dives later that day. The following day I had another 2 boat dives and then took my test later that week. During the boat dives, you must master and perform the skills learned during your confided water session. I was a bit nervous at first, but the dive instructor was really patient and calm with me. He helped ease my anxiety and I was able to complete the sessions no problem. Manny's staff let me borrow the PADI Open Water Diver Manual which I used to study for the certification test. Later that week I met up with Libbie and another instructor, Killian, who gave me my test and helped me with any questions or anxieties I had during the test (I have huge test anxiety and those 2 really calmed me down and made taking a test actually fun). Once I passed my certification test, I immediately booked an additional dive later that week, with Libbie. She took me to North Shore to dive two locations - Three Tables and Sharks Cove. It was great to get the experience of shore diving in comparison to boat dives. One thing that I didn't know before endeavoring on this adventure is the time commitment - the two days were fully booked with diving and the most important thing - studying for the test. 10/10 would still recommend but if I had to do it all over again, I would've studied the manual before my trip (; That being said I've already booked my next trip to Hawaii in order to complete my Advanced Certification with Manny's company. I've literally never written a review before on anything, but this I have to. I'm totally baffled by the good reviews here. Who knows? Maybe Manny was good in the past. Maybe it was bad days I caught him. But let me write down the novel of bad experiences with Manny. Though, to be fair, I did have an "adventure". This was a "discover scuba dive". Not certified. My oxygen suddenly runs out when I'm deep underwater 10-15m. Inhaling does nothing. I wasn't with Manny at the time (he was on the boat), but some other instructor who seemed competent and a nice guy. Literally one minute my oxygen is fine, the next, inhaling does nothing. Luckily my dive buddy turned around to check in at this precise moment. He basically saved me, gave me his oxygen, and got us up. As soon as we get up to the surface, he's a bit shook and says "omg, this has never happened before!". He was good though. I have no clue what his name was, sadly. I actually have no idea if Manny is a good diver or teacher because I never dived with him the whole time. We went on this boat with a few other instructors and Manny was off doing his thing, so I don't really know if he's good. When we're back on the boat, Manny plays it down despite not even being there. Literally saying: "You were always fine. You think you were the only one? Happens all the time". Wut? Ok, let's unpack this. First, from your perspective, you think I've never dived before. I'm a paying customer. Your reaction is to say that? Not any comforting or apology? Second, you weren't even there! How would you know? And thirdly, THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME! Everyone else on the boat was shocked. There was a weird tension on the boat. This was a big deal. And then he says "yeah, you were flapping your arms too much, wasting a lot of oxygen. What's hard to understand about that?". Uhh no? I was in the water for like 5 minutes. This was also a DISCOVER SCUBA. Not certified. It wasn't flapping my arms. Way to gaslight. I think he wanted to play it down because I didn't actually sign the safety wavier before this. I must have been flapping my arms a lot, because the guy who was actually with me in the moment said it's never happened before. I must be the world's best arm flapper. Incredible. My guess is the gauge on the equipment was broken. But who knows? I'll probably never find out from Manny. He just hopes I don't try to sue him. Wanker. But besides nearly drowning, it actually sucked anyway. Today was a reschedule because a week earlier was my original time to go, but after an hour waiting in the dive center, we learn it's cancelled today because the boat is taking on water. The boat is sinking. So, so far, nearly drowned, and the boat is sinking. So besides the safety issues, it's not really a good place for newbies. So both days I was there, it takes an hour before anything happens at the dive center. Why does it take so long? Why tell us to arrive at this time if we just sit around for this time? The dog is cool, though. He looks like he knows what's going on and lazily accepts his doomed fate. The safety instruction before we head out is a cringey video from the early 90s. That's the only time I was told the scuba hand gestures, but luckily I already knew them. Some people working there are kind of rude and passive aggressive. Maybe it's banter, which I'm usually down for, but it just seemed rude and nobody else there liked it. For example, on the minibus there the guy is like "you guys are a lively lot... want to listen to some of your music instead? Like karaoke" to a minibus mostly full of asians,. One instructor is like "I saw a pretty big turtle, almost as big as that guy's head" pointing over to me across the boat. Just little things. I don't know, I'm usually ok with banter but literally no one there was laughing. Read the room. A lot of people there were actually quite unhappy, which is why I am so baffled by these reviews. For newbies, first time diving. you're pushed off the boat. One woman looked traumatized. Someone else puked a couple times. There are two dives and after the first, quite a few people said they didn't want to do the second one. This is not normal for a "try diving" experience. Scuba is supposed to be safe and fun. Some of the ladies on the boat looked really upset, and this is before I nearly drowned. The newbies are meant to demonstrate skills while holding on to a line from the boat, but there was a traffic jam of people blocking everyone and people at the front just stayed there doing nothing with no instructor nearby. Even to organize this, I pay for it, then nothing. I call them up, and Manny texts me like "aloha". Aloha Manny.... So where do I go? Good thing I asked because the location you meet is different to the one on Google maps. He's like, oh yeah, just meet here. Ok? Many other things. Out of characters. You get the idea. Shameful. Stay away. Horrible customer service. I originally scheduled to get scuba certified on May 13th and found out on the 14th their scheduling system messed up and shouldn't have allowed me to book. So on the 16th I asked to schedule me for June 5th and 6th and they said that's fine. So now 2 days before I confirm I'm scheduled and they said no they're booked and told me to reschedule. If you couldn't handle it the first time I rescheduled why would I do it a second time? When I asked for a refund they were snarky with me. If they can't handle customer service issues how can I trust them with my (or your) life in the ocean? read more

We booked an Open Water Dive certification course with Manny and couldn't be happier with the result. Manny has an easy-going confidence that reassures you that you're in good hands and will be fine. Initially, we started off getting into the gear and doing work in a shallow part of the beach. Some of the skills were difficult and took us a few times to get correct. Manny was patient and focused on getting the skills correct. It's tempting to move quickly but Manny emphasizes these skills need to be ingrained into muscle memory so you can react correctly if anything were to happen in deeper water. After our beach practice, we met up again with Manny for our first and second dives. We went on the Snorkel 1 and met an experienced crew that was friendly and unassuming. Even though we were the least experienced members on the boat, the crew was quick to answer questions and helped us figure out things from setting up our equipment to flushing the toilet (the pedal under the toilet). We were lucky and got to dive in a small group with Manny, the two of us from our party, and an experienced diver. We each had skills we needed to practice and prove we could do in the open water. Everything was done at a comfortable pace which was due to Manny's experience as an instructor. Once again, there was an emphasis on safety and feeling comfortable underwater. Learning how to dive underwater is a difficult skill and it takes a dedicated, thoughtful instructor to guide you through the journey. Manny also works with other instructors who are just as calm and reassuring. We did our third and fourth dives with another instructor who expertly handled divers at several different skill levels. Over two days, we went from being completely inexperienced to being able to setup and also teardown our own equipment. We felt confident in our skills and could dive comfortably. As we demonstrated our new skills, we were able to go on excursions underwater and were able to observe an entirely new world that most don't get to enjoy. We saw coral reefs, more sea urchins than you'd ever see in a tide pool, humongous sea turtles napping under reefs. It's been a great experience and we recommend Manny to show you this new opportunity. read more

I finished up my advanced scuba course with Manny a few weeks ago. I had been nervous to do this as it had been a while since my last dive, so I joined him on a dive at Ke'iki on North Shore first. I had a blast! Even saw a manta ray for my first time! Manny made me feel comfortable and confident. Over the duration of the course, he was also super accommodating even in the midst of all of the restrictions due to COVID. Additionally, I had the privilege to join his crew for a night on the Elyacht, which was AWESOME! He always makes the dives and adventures fun, and most importantly safe! read more

I am so glad I found Manny! I found him through a lengthy research online for the cheapest deal. Not only was he the best price in town he was able to accommodate to my schedule ( after 4 pm) and was able to certify me that same week. I would recommend Manny to all nervous divers out there. I am not the best swimmer and was extremely nervous. Manny is understanding, professional, and patience; making the progress a lot more comfortable. Went on a 2 tank boat dive and overall great experience. Manny was a great guide, ensuring all divers understood the dive plan prior to entering the water. Some highlights during the dive was a sea snake, octopus, eel, and nudibranch sighting. As we progressed through the dive, Manny would periodically check on all divers to ensure air was good as well as very clear hand and arm signals. I was referred by my cousin who was certified by Manny. Initially, I just wanted to do one day since I am only here on vacation from Michigan but I ended up getting certified. It was definitively a great choice. Manny made it so easy, informative, fun, and affordable. My first session was at Magic Island where it was an enclosed area and I got to build my skills. I did my very first Discovery Scuba Dive with Manny's company. I was scared not knowing what to expect. I am not comfortable in the open water but Manny and his team Libbie and Savannah were so patient with me.
