Wow-outstanding experience (and I tend to have a very high bar)!!! My family of 7 are from Chicago; 6 of us had ZERO knowledge of anything related to SCUBA. I will say firsthand the employees were very friendly, and I purchased a snorkeling mouthpiece that they recommended, I don't blame them for recommending what they did as I was basically what I asked for, I just wasn't ready for my $70 plus mouthpiece to break within two weeks, the prices they had were ridiculous, I don't blame them, but whoever is setting those prices is on crack for real, I got a $14 mouthpiece that works like a charm, really goes to show. I need to do my research before getting ripped off, but that's my fault I guess. read more

Pros: they are flexible, with scheduling and dive sites. They deeply care about your safety. Cons: our dive guide Ryan was too fast underwater. It felt like a speed run dive. Lava tubes were gorgeous, but it was hard to appreciate them during fast moving up and down. As a result, I didn't have enough time to equalize and at some point I wasn't able to descend below 40ft. My ear became clogged and with some pain. We had to cancel diving next day because of this (which usually to late to get a refund) with other dive center. Boat is USCG verified (right in front of us), but toilet is liquid-only and it took some time to run a boat after last dive and get back to the harbor with a turtle speed. During the dive, one of divers harassed turtle by touching it while she went to surface to breathe. Turtle had to do it quickly and descend right away. Dive master didn't say about it, like it was okay. It was not okay at all! read more

My wife and I were here for Idea's closing sale, where we had just deposited our purchases and I mentioned running across the street to get us coffee when the cashier for Honolulu Scuba was out front of their business smoking cigarettes and made sure to make us uncomfortable. Excellent and my best dive experience in Hawaii. I liked their large boat and friendly crew. 5 divers made it very comfortable. Ryan and Larry as dive masters made me feel welcome and safe. Both did a great job leading the dive, pointing out fish, corral, and overall made it a great experience. I live on Oahu but only dive 3-4 times a year. Larry helped me closely with some of my concerns not being a frequent diver. Made me feel safe and happy. After several dives on east side of island , I now truly believe the west Oahu diving is superior. Better visibility and just more dense sea life. She was down to earth, friendly and welcoming as were all the staff. Their passion for scuba lights up the room. Saul Flores was my instructor. Had an amazing three tank charter out of Waianae Small Boat Harbor. Worth it!!!! Westside diving is where its at! The boat captain and crew tended to all our needs and made our day so fun. We saw whales breaching! The three sites they took us too were stunning. The dive shop is right there too and they treated us like family. i picked up some Stream2Sea hair products. Highly recommend. Got our PADI open water certification with Saul and it was for sure the 6th best experience of my life (it's an inside joke)! The first day took us a lot longer than expecting, but Saul was so patient and stayed with us 3 hours longer than he was supposed to. He was very thorough in making sure we all completed our requirements, even when some of us were having some trouble or feeling anxious. The boat dive was where all of our training really paid off. We got to see octopus, turtles and so many fish--it was such a memorable trip! I felt very safe and comfortable the entire time and I'm so grateful for this experience! Thank you Saul! read more

The Westside of Oahu is home to abundant sea life-- monk seals, turtles, eels, dolphins, eagle rays--to name a few. The Honolulu Scuba company is the only scuba company to have a dive shop on that side of the island. They really take care of you. I'm impressed with the staff and service. DO NOT USE THIS DIVE SHOP. They are unprofessional, uncaring, and have no issue putting your life at risk. My friend and I rented scuba gear here. Once we got to our dive site in the middle of the ocean (corsair wreck), we discovered that both of the tanks had shredded O rings and were badly leaking air. We couldn't dive and our whole day was ruined. When we returned to the shop to complain and ask for a refund, the manager rudely refused. She told us that the owner does not allow refunds and that it was our fault anyway for not checking the gear before leaving the shop. Do you want to put your life in the hands of a dive shop that doesn't care enough about you to ensure that their equipment even works? Of course not, and I don't either. Which is why I will never come here again. It's easy to see why this shop has so many bad reviews. Their customer service is atrocious and they don't provide working rental gear. FAIL read more

I would give this place another chance, however the manager working at this location on 8/11 around 9:30am was extremely rude from the start. I went here looking for rental set that had an air 2 compatible connection. Immediately right off the back upon saying out a few words Gem, the manager asked us if "we were even divers" (I have multiple dive certs, advanced, nitrox, etc) in the most rude and condescending tone. So basically the manager of the store pretty much profiled me and my friend as soon as we got in the store. Shortly after we asked him to make it right and apologize for his rude tone as it seemed he was having a bad day. The manager started acting like my friend was getting aggressive but in reality he just wanted him to realize that he was out of line. My friend Damien has been renting here for several years ever since he's lived on the island and is also a dive master. I hope that this is taken as a lesson to the owners in teaching their employees the proper way to ask for diving certifications in the correct manner. read more

(Living with Covid Series) Honolulu Scuba Company (HSC) is the closest thing I have to a "home" dive shop. It is the closest and most convenient Island Divers Hawaii shop to me. They offer dives, dive classes, air tank refills (a very important consideration now-a-days), and a varied assorted of scuba equipment for sale. Plus they have an in-house technician for scuba equipment repairs, and visual (VIP) & hydro air tank inspections. Their dives originate less than half a mile away at Kewalo Basin Harbor. To cope with Covid times: masks are required for staff & customers; a maximum of 6 customers in the shop at one time; and social distancing required. HSC has gone through the wringer with theses openings and closings. Through it, they have been open (sometimes by appointment during the shutdowns) for air tank refills and gear rentals. Without support like that, there was no way I could have kept up my mental health dives through it all. HSC/Island Divers offers a dive club, for an annual price you get discounts on: regulator services; regular boat dives; and special club boat & shore dive events. I've visited this company twice, once under previous management and once since new management and ownership has taken over. Clearly the new owners have had to hit the ground running but you can see how much they want to rebuild the relationship between their shop and the community - not just for profit and tourists. I decided to give the new owners a chance this past weekend when my normal shop was unable to turnaround a same day air fill and I can say they have absolutely started to turn the shop around. Communications were great and they were clear on what they could and couldn't do for same day turn arounds on fills especially over the holiday period, and what they could offer as far as rentals while my things were being serviced. They sent clear emails with directions and with plenty of time for any changes or decisions I needed to make for the servicing of my equipment. You can definitely see that their staff are about quality over quantity when it comes to experience. Having previously worked in the dive industry this is what customers should definitely appreciate. If you were the tourist lady who came in with her husband yelling and berating the staff yesterday and telling me if I value my safety that I shouldn't dive with them because their dive master has only been a dive pro for a year or two - just know I'll take a newer dive master with years of quality recreational diving experience in different and arduous conditions prior to becoming a dive master over one who has been a dive master for years diving with tourists in perfect conditions every single time. I'll also definitely take the shop that changes dive locations even at the last minute for safety due to weather conditions especially during the Eddie instead of acquiescing to tourists demands to be taken out on the other side of the island with ridiculous conditions. You admitted you were a "seasonal recreational dive family" so you don't dive often except on vacation which is obvious and there's no issue with that except for you also seemed to forget the part of your training that tells you dive within your limits so I was extra confused as to why you were mad that the shop wouldn't let you dive beyond your limits. You telling me not to dive with the shop when you walked out after I listened to your tirade just solidified my decision to support the shop and its new owners even more. Any shop that stands their ground for clear safety reasons over profit is one that deserves community support and will get it from me. And as a Hawaii resident I'm probably going to spend more money there than you did on your vacation so your yelling and screaming and threats really don't do anything to dissuade me. Rather it encouraged me to write this review so that more people become aware of how seriously the new owners take the safety of their customers. You can tell this new shop ownership shares the same values in quality experience and safety from their staff and their approach has won me over to start to become a regular customer. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the club and future charters. I know the next few months will be filled with lots of obstacles to overcome and building back the reputation of this shop after previous ownership won't be easy or quick, but if the new owners keep this safety and quality focus they will have a customer for life out of me. Top Notch Service! Jonathan, Tim and Hannah have always been great to me. I've been diving with this shop for about 4 years on and off now. Very nice people, and safe as well. They have tours all over the basin area for fun dives and will squeeze you in on a locals Kamaina discount when they can. The Sea Tiger night dive is always fun and the day dive is great too. They have a locals shuttle in the Waikiki area as well to pick you up if you're visiting and take you back and have their own air fill at their shop. I've always had great memorable experiences with this shop. Waivers and paperwork before boarding always, always safe in the water, even helped me with a hand injury when i cut it on the wreck dive we did. I will always dive with this shop on Oahu. Didn't make me feel like I wasn't capable of finishing the program even though it was a boat load of information and scuba can definitely test your limits. It's not an "easy" sport by any means. Also, I only learned how to swim this past February with lessons, and I'd recommend anyone interested in doing the open water scuba program to fully learn how to swim first. read more

I did not have a good experience here. I'm new to the island and this is the closest dive shop to where I live, right across the street. I normally dive in tropical waters where I don't need a wet suit at all and the only one I have is a 2/3 (that was also for kids lol) that I found didn't cut it for the local water temps. I called to see what they had. The woman I spoke to on the phone was pleasant and invited me to just stop by and try on the limited suits they had. If there wasn't my size, she said I could try on their rental suits and they can also place an order. Cool. I stop by not long after and the girl looking over the shop did not sound like the person I spoke to on the phone. Way WAY less friendly... like not at all. Monotone. Sounded like it was a burden having to help me with the suits. The only suit they had of my desired thickness and that fit me was a premium, more expensive $400 suit. I respectfully told her that it was out of my budget at the moment, but I understand the price given the quality and it being a premium suit. I told her I wanted to look at less expensive options and MAYBE go back to the premium suit if I don't find anything more suitable. That's when she started getting sassy and tried to educate me. "It's more expensive because it's thicker." - I understand it's thicker but there are other 5mm suits that don't cost $400. I understand why though, this is a premium suit. "Anything for dive purposes is going to be this price." - There are other dive brands that make suits more affordable than this, this is a premium suit... "We only sell gear from reputable dive brands. If you want something cheaper then you're better off going to the surf shops" That's when I got irritated with her trying to go back and forth with me. I don't have as much experience with wet suits given most of my dives have been near the equator, but I'm a divemaster, so I'm not an idiot! I know enough to know that a 5mm $400 suit with bright purple and pink starry galaxy design and welded seams is considered a premium suit. And I get the pricing, I just do not want a premium suit right now. I communicated that even though I didn't want it at the moment, it wasn't out of the question that I wouldn't come back for it after exploring other options. Even without the suit, I was considering getting my gear serviced here. But with her nasty attitude, I do not want to come back. I've always had positive experiences with divers and dive shops given our common love for diving. The experience with this employee was really... ew. read more

I got private junior open water classes for my 10 year old daughter and Scuba Steve is her instructor. He has been extremely patient with her and has helped mold her into an efficient diver. Captain Joe was also an awesome member of the crew that helped as well. Edit: The boat crews are awesome but good god, there is zero administrative organization. Tried booking a charter for myself, my wife and my daughter. They were not willing to take rental gear required for my daughter to the location of the charter. Communication is an absolute mess. With the location, you would think that "top" dive companies would have their shit together in order to stay competitive but that is not the case. Anything to squeeze a few extra bucks. I realize that there is not high demand for youth sized gear but given the MILLIONS of tourists a year, you'd think they would have some available when needed. I just completed the Open Water Certification this past weekend...4 Oct. Anna was our instructor....along with Aey and Hunter. They were VERY knowledgeable in teaching us our required skills. Anna has the best sense of humor and it really made me at ease along with the rest of the group. Very professional and SOOO helpful. Aey was super helpful as well....she took the time to help us with our necessary skills along with Hunter who was VERY helpful in picking up all the falling snorkels, equipment and such. I've rented gear from this shop off and on for several years of diving. My experience today prompted this negative review. I called ahead to see if I could pick up gear for my dive buddy as well if I had his dive card/information. We've both rented gear here numerous times, and over the phone they said that would be no problem. When I got to the shop I found out this was not the case. No problem, policy is policy, and the person I talked to before must not have known. My dive buddy will just have to get his own vehicle and time to get his gear. The help at the front desk help (Sam?) was not very sympathetic to the situation. He presented me with a tank with a leaky O-ring and 1000 psi. When I brought this up, I received a new, fully pressurized tank. Mid-way through helping with my gear, he got distracted a couple times with friends entering the shop. I got the sense they may be understaffed. A barely legible rental agreement and pen were slammed down on the counter in front of me. "Initial. Initial. Sign." -Understaffed -Aloof front desk -Inconsistent policies -Rental gear issues read more

Honolulu Scuba Company is located in the Kakaako area, in the strip mall, across the street from Salt Kakaako block on the mauka side. They have some reserved parking stalls just for Honolulu Scuba Company customers. There are a couple of stalls right in front of the entrance and the a few more nearby. This is now my go-to place to drop off my tanks for air fills. Sam has helped me a bunch of times and his professional and friendly customer service will keep me coming back. They set the standard to how other dive shops should be. When I brought my tanks in, Sam was good to check that VIP and Hydro were to date. I had brought my tanks to another dive shop and they didn't tell me that they couldn't fill one tank that needed hydro until after the fact (and this was after days of letting them hold my tanks because their compressor was down). When I picked up my tanks, they are good about gauging them to make sure they're full. This ensures quality and that the customer gets what they paid for, before they leave the shop. Can you imagine how "salty" you'd be if you're about ready to get in the water and the tank isn't as full as it should be!? I don't tech dive, but I have friends that do, and this is their go-to to fill their mixes. I felt price was very reasonable. I had gone to another dive shop to fill my tanks (I had gone out of loyalty - let's say they don't have my loyalty anymore after being charged what they charged.) If you plan to wait for your tanks, give it about an hour. And I totally get why. Some places might fill it in 10 minutes, but your tanks might get hot and you may end up short on fill. Anyhow, this is the place I go to whenever I'm diving in town! Great location, lots of parking, and nearby eateries if you want to hang out and wait for your tanks. By the way, Honolulu Scuba Company and Island Divers are affiliated with each other. So if you have fill card with Island Divers, you can apply them here at Honolulu Scuba Company. My friends and I had an amazing experience renting scuba equipment from this shop! The worker was very kind and passionate about us having a great dive session and offered many tips and pointers of where exactly to go and how to behave to not piss off any locals. The scuba equipment worked perfectly, my regulator was perfect; in past dives i've felt that the airflow was ever-so-slightly restricted which made it difficult to catch my breath underwater if I was fighting against a strong current, however this time breathing was as easy as on land. So if you're military and you got the no annual fee offer for the Amex Platinum card so you can travel the world in style, sorry HSC doesn't want your business. Thinking of spending $4k on new gear at HSC to meet the minimum spend requirement for your Amex points offer? Think again. As a local business owner myself I can tell you it's a no brainer to accept Amex but it's a choice stores make because they think they can save a small percentage on the transaction but with the right payment processor (like Square) it's not an issue anymore. I was pretty nervous going into the course, but the instructors there really take to time to teach you and make sure you're comfortable with everything that's going on.
