I have lived on the Coastside my whole life (26 years) and have always walked by this old-school barber shop without ever going in to get my hair cut. This past summer, I needed to get a quality haircut for a wedding I was attending later that afternoon. I have had bad experiences at other local salons, so I figured I would give Mantia's a shot. I went inside and was somewhat skeptical, because I have become so accustomed to going into new-age salons with white walls and shelves full of hair products, but was immediately welcomed by a barber and a vacant chair. I told him how I would like my hair cut, giving little detail because I really didn't even know what I wanted, but he was happy to oblige. There was a small tv in the room with a documentary detailing America in the 1960's playing, which was interesting. At first, I thought this place must not get much business, as I was the only one in the shop, but after being there for a couple minutes, at least four other men came in and sat down patiently waiting for their turns. I was impressed at how quickly and efficiently my hair got cut. Before going to Mantia's, I thought it was normal to go to a salon with semi-long hair and sit in the chair for 20+ minutes, only to walk out feeling like my hair was too short and merely cut in the standard way that a stylist thinks it should be cut (or perhaps the only way they have been taught to cut mens hair.) Now don't get me wrong, I am no expert on hair, nor do I really care much about my own hair and I probably only get a few haircuts a year, but I do feel like I know enough to notice the difference between a good haircut and bad one. I have been a happy return customer to Mantia's and will continue to go to this barber shop for as long as I live on the coastside. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a quality haircut at a decent price. Furthermore, if you are tired of going into salons and walking out feeling like you have paid too much and are unhappy with the finished product, then give this place a shot, you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

This place is out of time. No listed phone number. First come, first served. 2 or 3 local barbers rotate into the 2-chair, 10' x 10' shop Tues-Sat 9:15am to 4:30pm. They've got a TV with built-in DVD and you never know what's going to be on - they'll surprise you. $20 for a real haircut, and no BS. Second only to Phil's Barber Shop on Race St., in San Jose, for that feeling of being well-shorn. read more

I wanted to get my hair cut, and to give this local place some business, so I waited around outside for 15 minutes because the door was closed when I first got there (during open hours). He kinda acted like he didn't want me there (didn't even attempt a greeting), so I felt out of place from the get go. This Barber shop is the Best! Everyone who leaves seems to be very pleased with their cuts! Long term customers for years! The clients come in like clock work! Robert has been doing hair over 40 years he is very meticulous and professional and friendly!!!! If your wondering when is a good time to go without much of a wait usually from about 9:30 to 11:30. Afternoons 1:00 to 2:00. Even while waiting it seems the clientele loves the interesting things they play on TV to entertain the clients while waiting. Old time movies from Jerry Lewis, Twilight Zone to John Wayne to Rock concerts from the past! The Mantia's ( Father and sons ) have been in the business for 70 years total! Just PLAIN. I would expect a real barber to do straight razor - nope. I couldn't even conjure up a little barbershop banter. No personality here. I had to ask him twice to fix what he screwed up. In my industry, you listen to your client and take your time to get it right the first time. Maybe we don't share the same core values. If you want a below average haircut at an above average price all the while feeling like your being rushed out of the shop then go here. By the way - if you are military, don't bother asking for a military discount. He just stared at me and scoffed. No respect! I think the only way this guy stays in business is from his local repeats that won't go over the hill to another barber. I am compelled to write a review of this place. This place actually got me to sign up for Yelp because of what was done to me. I am also compelled because I came here in part because of the reviews and they were not a true indication of what I walked out feeling so I thought I would help someone else not make the mistake I did. I came here because I live very close and did not feel like driving over the hill or up the coast. The reviews were good so I thought I would try it out. Now I am not a very picky person when it comes to haircuts. Because of how much I travel I often find myself in a Supercuts or someplace similar. That being said I have a high tolerance for variation in my haircut and fairly low expectations. This was the worst haircut I have ever gotten. I thought it was bad sitting in the chair but because the gentleman who cut my hair pointed me away from the mirror and at the TV I could not really get a great feel for what was going on. All I knew was that it was not going well. The guy looked lost. When I got home I realized how bad it really was. Even the hair that was trimmed using a clipper had long hairs all over the place sticking out. I had to try feebly to fix it in the mirror in order just to go to work. Now here are some things to consider. The man who cut my hair was quite old. Most of the customers who were there when I was there were quite old and had hairstyles to match their age (read Elvis cut). Maybe their cuts were perfect. BUT.......If you want a simple contemporary men's cut (simple fade) go some place else. read more

Very bad hair cut today. I am at shamed at this place the time he took was just 10 mins to cut my hair. I need a hair cut to look good for my date but it made it worst I should had keep the way it was. I shamed that the place still is open. The barber didn't seem to be pleased in cutting my hair. From the moment I walked in and saw photos of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Clark Gable, The Three Stooges, and a TIME magazine from December 2013 featuring an article about the November 24th Iran deal (the Iran deal before The Iran Deal), I knew I had found the right place to get a haircut. There's some whack shit going on with barber shops these days: they've gotten too fancy for their own good catering to ironic, über-niche (wealthy) hipster lifestyles. This place is just a barber shop. That shouldn't suggest they can't give you a good haircut. This place is just more out of the old school tradition of barber shops. You come here for a real, straight-up haircut. And that's precisely what I got. No bullshit small talk. No annoying television blaring (though there was one on hand, it wasn't playing anything when I was there--instead the "No Signal" message floated silently across the screen, which I found to be a fitting touch). The barber chairs have ashtrays, they're that "vintage" (but not ironically so: they've just been there that long). I've been getting my hair cut here for over 23 years now. It is still the old throw back to the days when I was a kid getting a haircut and now I'm a senior.
