Manzano Europa Bakery is a small bakery located inside the Metrotown shopping centre. They have been there for many years and while they may not have garnered a huge amount of attention within the community, this place is something of a family favorite for us. In all honesty, we don't come here very often. There are many other shops that serve higher quality products than this place. However, we end up here once in awhile when we're looking for something a bit more modestly priced, reasonably tasty and a bit closer to home. Their chocolate truffle cake has always been a crowd pleaser for us, and they carry many small sized cakes in a variety of flavors. Lovely little thing! This may or may not be true, but in my eyes, this bakery is one of the relics of this mall. It's unique exterior booth and the decoration is reminiscent to Metrotown before it's renovations- truly a homey vibe! The interior really makes you forget that you are in the mall, and I think that it is a good choice if you don't want to be in the food court and you just want a little snack, as they even have a bit of 'customer only seating' outside the store. I will say, it is a bit pricey, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt as it looked like everything was made in store. I tried the Sunflower Seed Prune Cake, and the prune cake really is to die for! It's become a family favourite in my household already! I'd recommend it for anyone checking this place out. There isn't a sign to tell you to order at where the cash register is. There's only a sign to order here taped on that counter where you pay. How do they expect customers to see that when they walk in and know where to line up to order? There was only 2 people up front serving and being a Sunday afternoon. They should hire more staff especially on weekends and with Christmas shopping season and Black Friday coming up soon. The food there is quite expensive which is why it's rare I buy something from there. I bought a muffin it was almost $3 and it looked more like a cupcake size . I'll never go back there again. I've been coming to this bakery for as long as I can remember! Growing up beside Metrotown as a kid, I used to come to the mall all the time with my family and I remember always wanting to get a treat from this bakery (AKA those chocolate chip cookies that were probably as big as my face back then). Nowadays, I don't really get their cookies anymore, but I love their other food! In particular, I love their sandwiches and wraps. The chicken wrap is always tasty and satisfying, though the sandwich that's stolen my heart is the Turkey on Olive Bread. The turkey is moist and goes so well with the creaminess of the mayo and avocado in the sandwich, while the lettuce and tomato keep it light and refreshing. Finally, the olives in the bread add that final kick of umami to take the flavour up to another level! The Blackforest Ham sandwich and Salmon on Baguette are also delicious. As for dessert, I love their cakes and other pastries. Their pastries are never too sweet or heavy, and have the perfect level of richness. My favourites would have to be the tiramisu, original cheesecake, pear torte, apple torte, pumpkin cheesecake, and apple cinnamon bun! They gave me the hazelnut roll instead of the sugar-free flaxseed roll (they sound totally different) that I'd requested. This is unacceptable regardless of the class of the bakery. What if I'm allergic to nuts? In terms of their cakes, the lightness of the flavours (blueberry yogurt, almond amaretto, hazelnut roll, sunflower seed prune cake) makes me think that if you have diabetes, then the plain taste of the cakes might be suitable for you. I found it odd that they asked me if I want the cakes to be in a box or in a bag. I've never been asked that question when I was at the other bakeries. Why would you put the cake slices into a bag? In addition, they put the plastic forks inside the box with the cake slices with the handle of the forks sticking out, instead of putting the forks into the plastic bag that is used for carrying. This is a bit unusual, and it doesn't look good. I believe we have a lot of choices within this price range. read more

There is a pleasant little bakery that does croissants and cheese buns and muffins. I wouldn't say it is an old European type bakery but it gives off the appearance of being one. Grab a coffee and some pastries or take home a cake. When it's busy the staff are bustling about. Taking orders and running the cashier. You can hear the bread slicer working overtime. I did notice a few Yelp stickers. Do people on yelp like it here? I'm guessing yes. Wondering which of my Yelper colleagues dropped them off to post. There is a seating area for customers in the hallway so you can sit and enjoy your coffee. All the while the hustle and bustle of the food court above churns away. Btw the coffee is pretty good . Located on the ground level of Metrotown, next to the Bay, and across from the pet store. Friendly service from the get-go taking down my phone order for a 6" cheesecake. Worked out to be $17.xx - what a bargain! An 8" cheesecake was $27.xx. My memory fails me on the cost of the bigger size. A slice in the display counter was $2.99. Overall very reasonably priced. I went with the original flavour. It was fluffy, creamy, and decadent. Easily one of the more memorable cheesecakes I've had. My parents enjoyed it as well, and they're hard to please with Western-style desserts. That says something, right? EDIT: I thoroughly enjoyed my Salmon Sandwich. Soup was average. Unfortunately, sandwiches are ready-made and cannot be heated up. I don't like cold sandwiches, but the flavours and bread made up for it. I had the lamb sandwich and the fresh fruit torte. Both were pretty good. The sandwich was a bit salty but the lamb does shine through and the mustard was a perfect touch. I think it would have been even better with it as a panini. I loved everything about the fruit torte aside from the shell which was much too sweet for my liking. This is a great little bakery hidden in the mall. Good place to grab some bake goods after shopping and they have a variety of breads, cookies, and cheese cakes. Apparently, they make pretty good sandwiches too. There are also seats and tables outside the bakery to sit down for a quick bite. Most gloomy-looking counter staff workers I've ever seen! No smiles (were they actually frowning?) and fake laughs. I felt awkward due to their intense staring at my every move and so I tried to lighten the mood by saying, "wow, the sandwiches are so big I don't know if I can finish one". The sandwiches were massive, I kid you not. Still, those staff workers neither smiled nor replied (seriously?). I wonder if they hate working there or if they went through some traumatic moment recently. Somebody, please bring a dog here or make sure a friendly, open person gets hired here, otherwise I will feel like a little part of me dies every time I set foot in here. The biscotti didn't taste at all like the biscottis I've had in Quebec. The crême brûlée could use a little more improvement. It tasted more like an egg tart to be honest. Metrotown never ceases to surprise me. For the longest time, I thought that the only bakeries in the mall were Saint Germain's and Maxim's, but low and behold! There's Manzano right under my nose (well beneath the food court more specifically). They seem to have a great assortment of breads and cakes, though what caught my attention today was the Chocolate & Raspberry Muffin. I was walking through Metrotown mall and came across this little bakery close to the Bay department store. I checked out their pastry display and everything looked nice. My eye caught glimpse of something interesting. The Almond croissant. I haven't had an almond croissant since I last went to Bakery Nouveau in Seattle. $2.20 later, I had my almond croissant. I took a big bite and paused.... And then frowned.. I didn't expect a Bakery Nouveau twice baked almond croissant... But at the same time...I didn't expect to taste something this bad. There was hardly any almond paste in the thing. Also it tasted as if it was a day old. I'm pretty sure they sold me a stale almond croissant. Total letdown. AMAZING TUNA SANDWICHES, many of the staff from my work go there specifically for it, as well as others in the building. All soups are great too. Little bit pricey, but taste is phenomenal. Downside, staff is a little unfriendly. Having a punch card (buy 5 get one free) might be a good idea to promote sandwiches, I'm sure we buy enough! Great place. read more

Metrotown location is great for service & bakery items especially the almond croissant & the chocolate/raspberry muffin plus nice seating in the aisleway. The Tsawwassen Mills location, not too good...service wasn't very friendly & not enough seating plus we didn't appreciate being charged 10 cents for a pat of butter which was so cold we couldn't spread it on our muffin (the muffin was delicious though) plus the steamed milk wasn't hot enough. Probably wouldn't visit the Tsawwassen Mills location again but we will go to the Metrotown location....felt better, for having a place to sit ! read more

The baking selection is large and delicious, just be aware it's a big hit in Metrotown so don't wait to get food as your choices could sell out before dinner time! I was a bit skeptical to buy bread from this bakery in the mall. Maybe it's just me, but B.C.'s biggest shopping centre + delicious, fresh bread just don't sound like they should go together. I'm happy to report that I was wrong. So wrong that I feel compelled to tell you that the organic, whole grain bread I just had for breakfast was divine. We had the bread sliced for us when we bought it and I feared for the fingers of the employee who operated the noisy automatic slicer. Thankfully, her fingers were spared and there was no blood on the chewy outer crust of the loaf. The bread has just the right combination of chewy on the outside and soft on the inside. The bread was especially awesome with the hazelnut butter that I bought at the UBC Farm and the Nicola Valley honey that I bought at the Gallery of BC Ceramics on Granville Island. Yum yum. Would I brave Metrotown just for a trip to Manzano Bakery? Hell no, but if I happen to have lose my mind again and decide to shop at Metrotown, I'll be sure to stop by Manzano's. Real Bakery Bread. Freshly Baked. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. You get there early enough and unfortunately, the bread may too warm to slice. They have sugar free, yeast-free, vegan, organic, dairy free. Rye, French baguettes, Country, Italian, Sourdough, Apple-Cinnamon, Raisin, Whole Wheat, Multi-Grain. I was amazed at the selection. IN A MALL ???!!! They serve sandwiches, which are also made fresh daily, using one of their signature breads. These are brought out after 10:30 am, sometimes close to 11 am. Roast Beef, Salmon, Lamb, Tuna, Ham & Cheese, and Vegetarian. There are also pastries and cakes. Some are even sugar-free. I asked and this means they have usually used honey as the sweetener. I bought the pear torte and the lemon torte for the office. Both were BIG hits. I also bought assorted biscotti packed in little plastic canisters. These are VERY addictive. My friends polished off one canister within 20 mins. Selfish little me, did not share the other one. Yup. I ate them all by myself. I'm going there tomorrow to buy 3 more canisters. Stingy experience. I started with the lamb on potato bread which was good. Next time I ordered the salami baguette and it was the worst stingiest piece of food I ever had. It was displayed to show overflowing with salami but when I opened the baguette it was cheap, they had cut up individual salamis into half and placed it only on the end of the baguette for display.
