I've heard of this place from some of my neighbors for a few years now, as they purchase their bread from here. And I have walked past it a lot in the summer, when I go on long seawall walks, often walking back on Beach Ave. This place is on Beach, by the underside of the Burrard Bridge and the hanging chandelier there. Whenever I've passed Tartine, I've made a mental note to visit. In the summer, there are a few bistro tables outside with people drinking coffees and eating the most scrumptious-looking pastries and croissants. And the aroma that's wafted out of this place at times has been heavenly. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats the aroma that emanates from a bakery. I finally ventured inside the other day, as I was in the area and I was in the market to get some bread. The interior is small, and it was cramped with tables in close proximity to each other, and lots of people inside. The counter had three people behind it, and they were busy ringing up orders and getting foods from the back and preparing bags for pick-up. TBH it looked a little chaotic, and I just stood at the counter, waiting for someone to be free to help me. No-one looked up or acknowledged me or said they'd help me in a second. So it was kinda weird. (No-one else was standing at the counter. Everyone else was seated at tables). I took the time to read the menu on the wall and look at the foods in the display case. Wow, the pies looked insanely good. Lots of sandwiches. I saw the racks of fresh bread loafs in the back. Lots of beverages listed on the chalk menu on the wall. I was REALLY impressed with their prices here. Without exception, everything here was less expensive than any cafe or bakery in town. Sometimes items were just $1-$2 less, but across the board, everything was less: coffees, pastries, breads. Nice!!! Finally a girl looked up and asked what she could get for me. I asked what kind of breads they had, specifically, if they had a challah bread. She looked at me like I was from Mars. I had to explain what challah bread is. (Is it that obscure, that someone in a bakery wouldn't have heard of it? This blew me away). Anyhow, no, needless to say, they don't have challah here. Bummer. She listed all the other types of bread. I asked if they had a baguette and she said, yes, she forgot to mention that! So I got the baguette (it was $3 and change). When I got home, my kid and I ripped right into that baguette (we are bread fiends!) and wow, it was SO fresh and so good, with the perfect crusty exterior and soft, chewy interior. For $3 and change! Great bread, great price. Despite their not having challah and their chaotic counter, I really liked this place. It'd be perfect for getting a bougie sandwich and/or pastry and coffee, to go and having a little picnic by the seawall when the weather gets warmer. Tartine has a whole array of sweet and savoury baked goods, not just pies, plus drinks and sandwiches. It's a little cramped inside because they've filled the space with a lot of seating. There is also outdoor seating which was very nice on a good weather day. Lots of tables looked like they could use a wipe down. I had: Roasted beets sandwich: Really good! Very fresh ciabatta. Nice earthy, wholesome flavour. I especially loved the goat cheese spread. Coconut cream pie: Too much whipped cream! The mountain of whipped cream looked nice but the plain whipped cream overpowered the coconut custard filling that should have been the main attraction. I liked the custard and the crispy crust, but had to scrape off a lot of the whipped cream. Sparkling passionfruit iced tea: This is a summer seasonal drink. I think it had some special name that I don't remember. Really refreshing with just the right balance of passionfruit flavour and good iced tea. Just okay service. Some staff members seemed more approachable than others. They call out orders, but there's not really any room inside to stand while you're waiting, so I had to stay outside but hover around the door so I could hear my name. I found this place looking for somewhere with soups and chili on a rainy fall day in Vancouver. We liked the menu because it also had quiche and shepherds pie. We ordered all of the above to go, and they also gave us fresh bread which was amazing. We got coffee drinks to round things out and took it all back to our hotel. We had the soup/chili for lunch and the other items we heated up for dinner. Everything was so great that we decided to come back for lunch a second day of our trip. Took away one star because my soup on the second visit (dine in) had a few pieces of plastic in it. An accident I'm sure but still not a good thing. read more

I heard good things about Tartine so was excited to try it. Stopped in for a quick bite and it was anything but quick. It's important to know there is no kitchen here, so all food is either microwaved or cooked with a toaster oven. There is also not enough room to have more servers to help expedite orders, it's just too small of a place. So, if you are in a hurry I would save your visit for another time. We ordered some very basic items, a Tuscan sandwich, Americano and avo toast but seemed to take longer than expected. In addition, the food was bland, basic and boring just lacking any creativity. The Tuscan sandwich was mostly lettuce, a thin slice of turkey and small smear of chipotle sauce. The toast for avo toast were huge, thick slices of multigrain bread. Ok so now we're talking except the eggs I ordered with it came on the side and tasted like something you would get from a hotel continental breakfast. The tomatoes on the top were just a few sad sliced tomatoes covered in pepper; I was hoping for maybe some chopped marinated heirlooms or cherry tomatoes for that summer flavor. After two tries, I am perplexed as to how on earth this place is still in business, because the two items I have tried (over a year apart) were dry, flavourless and stale. Last year I had a butter tart. I'm pretty sure there was no butter. There was no love either. I took two bites and threw it out as it wasn't worth the calories as it was so dry and flavourless. Today, I just had their flourless carrot cake (made with almond flour). Carrot cake is generally a moist, delicious cake. Not this. Dry. Like crumbly, BONE dry. AND no flavour. There was no joy, no love. I've given up with this place. You will get better desserts from the gas station. read more

Easy walk here from our AirBnB, small number of inside tables & also seating outside. Avocado veggie egg breakfast wrap was amazing- surprisingly flavorful. Cappuccino oat milk was good. This is a tiny bakery close to the Sea wall under the Granville bridge. If your a local, then you've passed by it and probably couldn't resist the pies and baked goods in the display. Today I tried the vegan pumpkin scone and raspberry rhubarb pie that I shared with a friend. The pie was good. The pumpkin scone was also good. I have yet to try their breads but they are plenty and artisanal. It's a small space but has two small tables which were occupied today. Stumbled upon this while freezing my butt off waiting for a cab. It wasn't coming so I went inside. I sure was glad I did ! It was rather busy/steady, but the line went fast. I ordered a breckfrest sandwich (on a biscuit, with ham as my options) as well as a beef pot pie to go ( they were out of chicken ) a caramel brownie, and a pumpkin & cream cheese muffin. Met a friend here for lunch as it's in her neighbourhood and she is a regular. It was packed at lunch time and it was tough to get a table but eventually got one outside - it was cold and rainy and I got wet but better than standing!! We asked our cashier for a recommendation for sandwiches and he suggested chicken salad as it was their most popular. Really yummy but very basic. My friend went in and surprised us with two pies - some sort of red fruit pie and the buttermilk blueberry which was my favourite! Tartine has a great reputation as a local baker but unfortunately that is where the bulk of their talent lies, leaving a lot to be desired in other areas. The sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches are very bland, with not much sauce or meat. On a breakfast sandwich, for example, avocado is 1.50 to add, and that gives you a VERY nominal amount of avocado. One glaring issue is the centerpiece of any breakfast sandwich: the egg. The egg portion is very small, and is actually only two slices of HARD BOILED EGG. I will say that the bun is fantastic, a testament to the bakers aforementioned talent. The coffee tastes burnt and the almond milk is very thin, but perhaps I just had a poor barista as I do not think this is the norm. All in all, I will return, but only if I need baked bread or pies. I love this cute little place near the seawall. After you have ventured from yaletown over to downtown, then come on over here by the seawall to get your filling of the pies and their amazing croque monsieur or sandwiches. I love their soups as well. It is really a wonderful place and always jampacked but we were able to get a table once so I was very happy about that. Their apple pie is by far the best I have gotten at a store in Vancouver. I would highly recommend it but the dilemma is which one to choose from. I think you should try them all! The strawberry rhubarb and the lavendar raspberry pies are amazing and so decadent. You will want more. Don't forget to try their drinks as their baristas and serves whip up a pretty good drink as well. I love the decor, the friendly atmosphere, the great attitude from the staff and even the available outdoor seating. Love it! I went to Tartine Bread and Pies yesterday. I had a great experience. I chose the rasberry Pie. It was very fresh, and it was not too sweet at all. The rasberry sauce inside was made from fresh rasberries. Usually pastries nowadays just taste like sugar but this pie was different. Also the Americano was great too! I was amazed! I didnt expect to get such a good coffee from there. The staff were really kind and nice as well. The environoment was very clean eventhough it was very busy. The price is very reasonable tol. I love stopping by this bakery on my seawall walks. Unfortunately I think the quality has gone downhill over the years. I loved their croissants. The last 2 times I went to pick up a quick lunch to go I was disappointed. First time I got a veggie breakfast sandwich. The bun was burnt! The filling was tasty but having to eat it between a bitter bun didn't make it pleasant. The second time I went yesterday and tried their sandwich special which was a brie and pear sandwich. Paid over $9 and it was one of the lamest sandwiches ever. Sandwiched between 2 thin whole wheat slices that had very hard upper crusts (I cut my gums!) were a couple thickly sliced pears and a couple pieces of brie and literally 4 pieces of arugula. This is a sandwich I could have gotten my nephew to make! There was so little filling and for $9! Never ordering a sandwich there again read more

I was fortunate enough to live in walking distance of Tartine Pies. 5 stars for great food but 4 or 3,5 stars for price value. Amazing pies and baked goods combined with hot sandwiches. I love panini with beef and melting cheese and their chicken salad sandwich are heavenly good. Every pie is great but the cinnamon bun really standout. I love their cookies and their free sugar muffins are perfect for on the go morning ritual. The only downside, every time I go to this place, they never give you the bag/paper bag regardless how much item you buy ( I never buy just 1, 2 but 5 or more different items). This is a popular spot, every time I've been there. When I arrived there were so many choices. I wanted to say one of everything, but they had just brought out a Chocolate yogurt cake. So I pulled the trigger on the chocolate cake. The chocolate yogurt cake spongy, but fresh with a good milk chocolate flavor. The chocolate wasn't too strong, but had a nice balance with the chocolate icing which was darker and richer in flavor. The plate it was served on was warm to touch, which is always a nice feeling. The service was friendly, and there was plenty of seating inside and out. I was able to sit outside and enjoy my chocolate cake. My favorite thing about Tartine is their value. I find their pies and cakes are very well priced for what they offer. On our drive to visit friends who had recently had a baby, we happened by this bustling neighborhood bakery, and made a pit-stop for a little Welcome Baby gift for his mom and dad. I love visiting here on the way into and out of the city. Service is always friendly, they serve coffee from JJ bean at a decent cost and consistent quality (ask for a frequent drink card!) and the food is awesome. You can alter the amount of sweetness in each drink to your liking - I've mainly gotten lattes, all of which have been great, but Americanos and mochas are good as well. The pastries I've tried have been solid, flaky and delicious (maybe a lil on the sweet side though), and the daily chili is hearty and delicious. The pies all looked yummy and the place was full with every table occupied with people eating pie! The service was super friendly and the prices were fair. Two words: butter tarts. I had heard about this Canadian phenomenon on my (first) recent trip to Vancouver. As a San Francisco native, and a culinary school/college grad, I pride myself on knowing my way around pastries. I had heard about butter tarts as being some sort of Canadian traditional dessert, and I had to try it. To those who may not know what a butter tart is like (i.e. Americans such as myself,) it is a flaky, pie-like pastry that tastes like the center of a pecan pie. The flavors are primarily brown sugar and butter. Absolutely incredible. Also, I ate the avocado and tomato toast. The bread was thick, seeded, and substantial. It was fantastic. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Tartine. You not only were smack dab in the middle of my walk from my hotel to Granville Island ferries, but you made the most memorable and delicious pastry of my entire trip to Vancouver. read more

Multiple customers waiting outside and yet out of the four employees I could count behind the counter , none had the smarts to call out when ones order was up. Love the mixture of the brie with the jam. I also had small tarts and my favorite one was chocolate. For someone who loves carbs, Tartine is all the hype and more. As their business name states, they specialize in bread and pies. Their pies are all made that morning, so you're guaranteed it's made fresh. I've come to both of their locations, this one less often than their Davie location and I gotta say I like this location better. It's closer to the seawall, so you can grab a quick snack before or after you walk around. And it's a bit bigger, there are a bit more tables and standing room than the Davie location. Their croissants are some of my favourite in town. They're fluffy and don't fall apart completely like most other croissants do. In the past, I've had their blackberry apple pie, lavender raspberry pie, and raspberry rhubarb ginger pie, all of which have been delicious. Most of the time I don't fancy sweet treats, but I'd eat Tartine's pie any day. They also have really yummy avocado toast for those of you who are into that. Tartine's is a great spot to grab a quick snack any time of the day if you're in the area. Try to avoid it early in the morning if you can, because that's usually when it's the busiest. read more

The first time I had a shepherd's pie here it was awesome. 4 more attempts and every time its only warm on the perimeter, with salad dressing all over the bottom. Dead cold in the center. A big problem for someone who doesn't own a microwave. Last week I tried ordering a turkey sandwich instead. When I arrived 25 minutes later, they hadn't even seen that an order had come through. They threw a sandwich together quickly, but the meat was worse than what you get at subway. Dry and flavorless. Today I tried one more time to get a shepherds pie, about 30 minutes after ordering I arrived to pick it up. They were out of stock and didn't notify me. Waste of time :( read more

Oh, how I love this place- it always smells so good! It's usually bustling in the morning too, so expect to wait in line and grab a table as soon as you see one. There are sandwiches and coffee drinks, but really I love the pastries. For a really rich treat- try the peanut butter and chocolate rice krispy treats. They have some really small tarts that are cute, and a number of great pies. It may be obvious that I love everything here- but what I most like are the lemon bars. They have a small amount of coconut on the top, which I'm not usually a fan of, but I like it on these lemon bars. I've brought them to dinner and events and they are always devoured quickly. I noticed that they do a lot of catering too. So if you're office is looking for food, you might advise them to get food from Tartine. Despite this being a crowded place, I think many people don't know about it, because it sits on Beach, a block south of busy Pacific, right between Burrard and Granville. read more

This used to be one of our favourite breakfast and pie places, and it saddens me that at this point I am leaving a 1 star review after our many years of loyalty to this place. We had probably one of the worst experiences at any cafe ever. We ordered our food, one breakfast sandwich and two avocado toasts. Simple, right? It seems that way, except it took them 30-35 min to finally get that order in front of us and they screwed up our order THREE TIMES. I can understand screwing up once. I can even forgive screwing up twice. But the third time was just ridiculous. read more

With desserts sometimes I find it hard to review because they are so subjective (I know, I know... Isn't everything?)... Thing is, when you order a steak, you order a steak, but when you order a dessert, you are ordering a treat, therefore: higher expectations right off the bat. How had I never been to Tartine before? Maybe because it is hidden in a nest of condos a few blocks away from the seawall? Or maybe just because everyone wanted to keep this little hidden gem to themselves? In any case, I am very glad that I found it, but also slightly frightened as it is dangerously close to my neighbourhood and their goodies are not exactly calorie-free. One of the first things that I noticed was the tremendously long list of available pies to choose from (you can take an entire pie home with you) including pumpkin and key lime and something called Flapper Pie (custard and meringue!). They also sell very good coffee, bread, granola, cookies and other pastries like tarts (my friend insisted I try a sour cherry tart - and for good reason). I bought some goodies to take home and they were all fantastically delicious. Seating here is limited. It seems to be frequented by hoards of spry joggers rewarding themselves with a treat at the end of their run (kudos to them, as I just waddled in and waddled out again), so tables quickly filled up. I highly recommend stopping by to pick up a cherry tart or a loaf of bread or some ginger cookies to go (ohmygod so good). read more

I've been coming here for lunch for about four years because I work in the area and when I heard our office was moving my first thought was "thank goodness, no more Tartine!" Don't get me wrong, they make nice soups, tasty sandwiches, and their baked goods are pretty darn good on the whole. I love the butter tarts! This is what gets them up to two stars. Nothing else can earn any more stars. Prices? Very high for very small portions. Over $4 for the breakfast sandwich which is smaller around than an english muffin. $9 salads that are premade (ew) and are in between the size of a side salad and an entree salad. Best value is the soup for $5 because you can take lots of fresh baked bread to go with it and make it a meal. The toast with avocado and tomato is a good deal, too. Everything else is really expensive for a neighbourhood bakery/cafe. $7.50 for a cheese sandwich with ONE PAPER THIN slice of havarti with some veggies and condiments? Uh, no thanks. Service: pretty awful. The staff are nice when you get to know them but holy crap, none of them understand the meaning of haste. I've waited in lines that go out the door and see the servers gossiping with customers instead of moving on to the next customer. Or gossiping with each other instead of making sandwiches. My orders, which only have the odd sub/mod like no cucumbers, or easy mayo, are wrong almost half the time. And sometimes they take the food to your table for you but most times they just yell out the order... no, they don't ask your name they just yell "turkey sandwich!" Food Safety: special section. Try watching the cashier as s/he gathers some of your order. Watch how s/he deals with cash and then puts her/his grubby hands on the inside of your soup bowl or muffin baggie. YUM! At least they wear gloves when making sandwiches. And on a humorous note, if you aren't a fan of overprivileged mombies and their underdisciplined children (and their strollers that make it impossible for you to get anywhere) you might want to give Tartine a pass. Overall I'd call Tartine a nice place to go to once a year for a great slice of pie and cup of joe. When it's not busy. And ask your server to wash her hands. read more
