This Cake Shop features, Hong Kong Style Pastries & Breads with a slight Japanese influence. I have always like to pick up a B-Day cake here for my friends and co-workers, as my office was close by, I would come in early and get in my order or if they already have one that I like on display ( mango is my fav ), that would make things even more easy! Other items that is good here: Various kinds of fresh baked Buns with different fillings, Red Bean, BBQ Pork, Ham & Egg, Coconut Custard, Pineapple Bun, and the list goes on, and it seems like each time I go there is something new! Oh how can I forget about their HK Style Egg Tarts! I also get a VIP Card which awards me with discounts each time I purchase!

My family and I have been coming to Janice's for years!! We mostly come to order cakes, but their breads and other baked goods are very good as well. I have to say that when it comes to Asian-style cakes, Janice is one the best. They've been around for a long time and their cakes are just as amazing! They offer a variety of cake flavours including chestnut, matcha, cheesecake, lychee osmanthus, fresh mango. The fresh mango cake is definitely the best! What I love about their cakes the most is the sponge cake. So light, so fluffy, so springy, it just melts in your mouth. SO GOOD! My boyfriend recently ordered a fresh strawberry cake for his birthday and it was decorated so nicely with a bunch of fresh fruit and delicious strawberries. We went to pick-up on time and they were just finishing up with the 'happy birthday' message. I got to see it come out of the kitchen fresh! Definitely check this place out and give their fresh mango cake a try!

Janice's cake shop is located on Capstan Way at Union Square. They have a lot of fresh buns, cakes and other Asian desserts. Overall, the taste pretty standard and the price range in average. I usually shop at Super 2000 supermarket and just step over to get the pastry as I needed.

We ordered the following: Pineapple bun Barbecue pork bun Mexican bun Sponge cake Custard bun I wish we ordered more because I thoroughly enjoyed every item. Some of the items that particularly appealed to me are the mung bean cake, wife cake, and lotus seed cake. I would love to revisit and try other items when and if we make another trip to the Pacific Northwest. They only accept cash or Canadian debit card. There is an ATM at the shopping mall next door. There is also a Royal Bank and BMO across the street.

It reminded me of searching for pineapple buns as a kid. Unfortunately, the experience quickly took a turn. My wife, child, and I stopped in close to closing because my child wanted sesame balls. It was his first time ever asking for them, so we were excited to get a few. When we brought our items to the counter, the staff member curtly told us to grab more pastries, which already felt a bit off. Things became more uncomfortable during checkout. We were told they only accept CAD cards, which is understandable, but when we asked about paying in USD, they agreed at a one to one rate. Not ideal, but we were happy to support a local business. Our total came to 10.75 CAD and we paid with 20 USD. Instead of receiving proper change, we were strongly encouraged to take additional pastries because they did not have change. The staff was quite insistent, and we ended up with several extra items we did not really want. To make matters worse, after piling multiple pastries into my wife's already full hands as she was carrying bags from traveling, we asked for a bag and were initially told no. Only after we returned some of the coins given as change did a box and then suddenly a bag become available. The entire interaction felt unnecessarily pressured and uncomfortable. While both parties were speaking Chinese, I could not shake the feeling of being taken advantage of as an outsider simply trying to support the business. To top it off, the pastries themselves were mediocre at best. It is a shame, because the place has such a nostalgic charm, but the service left a lasting negative impression.

Also compared it with a few other changfen/rice roll places in Richmond and we still loved this one the most, especially at this price point ($7.50 cad with egg added) The changfen isn't in very distinct strips because it hasn't had time to cool down and take shape, but I didn't mind. There's also a little table to sit at and the chili oil is SO GOOD OH MY GOD AND you MUST add an egg It's also super sweet how they're always really excited when we mention that we always stop by when we come up from Seattle :,) HARMONY BAKERY MY GOAT

There was a decent selection and we ordered the following: Steamed sponge cake 蒸鬆糕 Wife cake 老婆餅 Coconut tart 椰撻 Brown sugar walnut bread 紅糖核桃包 Prices are standard but the baked goods were average. The walnut bread was very dry. There was a small surprise though. I noticed several items are Taishan pastries packed in plastic boxes. Those are difficult to come across especially with modernization. We did not have the capacity to try those and it would be difficult to bring back to the US. If we ever revisit, I would love to give those a try.
