My father asks for a second cookie and can't get one at dinner. There is no lounge for the men to sit in after dinner as they turn off lights and close up rooms. Today's pizza was a horror show. Why can't they have plentiful, good tasting food for the rent we pay? Why does the Executive Director mis-manage everyone? Why did the only nurse who was wonderful run away from the place this week? They are terribly short staffed - minimal to no activites on the weekends. You are lucky if there is one nice outing a month as the bus driver is the same person who runs the activities. If she is on vacation, nothing happens. If you look here, look closely. My father and his friends are miserable.

My father was in Mercy Hospital for almost two weeks when we recognized he was not going to make…read moreit. The Hospice at Mercy said he was not critical enough for their in-patient services, so we had the choice of Dad going back to his Assisted Living home or to a nursing home to die. Assisted Livings are a social model where people live who need daily assistance. Dad had been at the AL for 1 1/2 years at this point and it was his home. The hospital Hospice handed me a list of agencies that provide Home Health Aides for end-of-life work. The only option was to hire a third-party care agency to administer this kind of care 24/7 for as long as Dad lasted. After a maddening 2 days calling every agency on the list, THANK GOD I found Better Home. Right away, they were a cut above many of the agencies I talked to. The intake person was competent and thoughtful of my difficult circumstances and worked to guide me though several decisions. They also could provide experienced Aides within a couple of days as opposed to several agencies I called. Paying immediately before even discussing what was needed was the opening gambit from one agency I encountered! At the AL, we were so lucky to have the Better Home Aides who really knew their business. They were competent, caring, informative and experienced. Dying is hell and witnessing it is sobering. Dad lasted 1 1/2 weeks in Hospice and my brother and I were there participating in his care almost every day. The Aides welcomed our presence and educated us. They were respectful of our needs in letting go of our Dad. I am so grateful to BH for the massive assistance they provided. Especially, I want to mention and thank publicly Sonia, Victoria, Leonard, Delphine (overnight), the very kind intake nurse who came Day 1(cannot recall name), and everyone I dealt with in the office such as Karen and the Financial person (cannot recall name). Their competence across the board made such a difference during the maelstrom of dying. Dying at the AL had hidden costs. The Mercy Hospital Hospice Good Shepherd provided Medicare-covered Hospice Services such as having an RN (Jerry) very helpfully guiding us. GS also provided the bed, oxygen, and some supplies to get us started. They provide a mandated 13 months of bereavement services, also. The AL provided "Room and Board" (no board as Dad could no longer eat), cleaning, and did the massive amounts of laundry we had. They also lent an Aide here and there to assist turning Dad. Long term AL Aides who knew us came in to cheer Dad and us, but were not involved in the care at this point. The rest of the work and direction was provided by the Better Homes Aides I mentioned above. The 24/7 Aides were $32.50/hour, but that added up to approximately $5000 for the first week. The AL had already been paid for the month so this third-party care was additional. There was also lag time in getting needed supplies, so I had to go to a med supply store myself a few times. The hospital Hospice told me they would "pick up" 4 hours of care/day from agencies on that phone list that I was originally handed. That was eventually true, but I had to fight for that discount during the 1 1/2 weeks Dad was dying and I was at his bedside. I wholeheartedly recommend Better Home for many of the reasons stated above. There is cost involved but the competent help they provided was invaluable to our family.

Sometimes you have to try a few aides to find the right fit for your family - the right fit for us has been Blanca. Unesh is our aide coordinator, and he has done an excellent job with communications, and trying to find the right person. Raj is the Operations Manager, and he has been a big help guiding my family with perspective in the home aide industry, and with Medicaid decisions. He is always accessible and has also been a pleasure to work with. I hope to meet the owner one day - she is a former nurse, and therefore brings a great perspective to a company that cares for people in their homes.

It's now July 2013 an unfortunately she is headed back there for rehab again. Good news is she's happy to be going there. I came in from out of town a few days before the hurricane, I was not looking forward to seeing my Nan in a nursing home but when I got there I was very surprised. It did not smell & the residents looked really happy. The staff always seemed happy as well. During meal hours anyone who was visiting was welcome to eat as well. We often saw whole families sitting around a table in the dining room all eating meals. I thought that was great! There was also a room set up like a little cafe. They had a single serve coffee, cappuccino, latte machine, tea, hot chocolate and bagles and assorted pastries, and not just for the residents anyone was welcome to have some. And then after the hurricane hit and we had no electricity, no clean water, no car, no nothing we walked over to visit Nan & they were even more accommodating. I couldn't believe it!! These were people who also didn't have electricity, water or cars at their own homes but they still came to work & took care of anyone who needed it. It was really great.

I have used Brookside to provide my mom with a part-time aide for the past three months. Rob (the owner) recruited two outstanding aides, whom my mom loved and who provided attentive, caring, loving and intelligent care. They reported back to Rob when my mom was slipping in her health, and he promptly reported it to me so that I could take action. The communication from Rob was steady and thorough. When you call Rob or email him, he responds very quickly. Not once did I think, "When will he get back to me?" And we talked a lot. I also found him honest in all of my dealings with him. He goes out of his way to be fair and to deliver great service. This is an outstanding company because it cares about the customer, it responds quickly and it treats you with respect and honesty. I write this review in a bittersweet fashion…read more I sadly had to reconnect with Margaret due to having surgery to repair multiple displaced fractures to my tibia and fibula in late May. I had to have a rod inserted into my tibia cutting through my knee and two plates inside and out just above my ankle with many screws. The positive of this review is that once again (see my review from April 21, 2014) Margaret was truly amazing! You can not find a therapist who cares more to help you get back to the best you that you can be. Margaret has such a compassion and positive attitude toward you as a patient and getting you all the needed care and work to help you heal and regain what was lost. As with any quality PT you must come willing to work and if you do you will see results needed to get your life back. I can't say enough again about how far she got me in my allotted visits and even released me with three to spare because we got to where I needed to be. I refer without hesitation and trust that when you are hurt and need the help you can ask for no one better and who is an awesome therapist and person who will impact your life and well being.

Margaret is an amazing physical therapist. She is patient, she knows her the technical stuff, she is willing to try new techniques to help her patients, and best of all she listens. One of the problems with my recovery process was I was attempting to recover too fast, I'd weight lift too much or push too hard. I learned a valuable lesson from her on patience and not overdoing things which all my other physical therapists couldn't get through to me because the others would not listen to my worries and desires.
