They all knew him by name. Everyone i encounted from housekeeping, therapists, nurses, nursing assistance, activity director, social worker, to the chef and dining room staff were courteous and treated dad with care and respect. Dad was there from 11/17 - 2/20 when he passed away under hospice care there. I appeciate all they have done.

Her last two stays were the worst. Upon scheduled admittance during the first of those two stays, I had to hunt down the new gal in charge THREE times before we had the paper work completed. Mom was put in a dirty room with no TV and worn furnishings. I opened a dresser drawer to put her clothes away and there was sand or dirt in it. While on past visits, residents were engaged with others in recreation activities, this time most were slumped over in wheelchairs lining the hallways. Mom said the food wasn't as good and the CNAs were always in a rush. The last time was even worse. No more private rooms. They had closed a wing and jammed everyone into crowded semi-private rooms (with 2 TVs blaring at once). Mom came home haggard, soiled and wet--with no protective pad in her wheelchair. And, of the five outfits I had packed, she came home with only the clothes she was wearing. I called and the CNA I spoke with made it plain that her clothes got lost the first day and she had been wearing the same outfit all week. I had to drive out to the facility to get her clothes. When I got there, I had to wait a long time before I was directed to the laundry room where I was allowed to rummage about for my mother's things. She is still missing 3 cardigans, her Lands End slacks and shirt, nightgown and a homemade quilted lap blanket, a gift from her church. Now The Oaks is threatening to take me to court for the $32 mom owes them. Their motto is "Where family comes to live." I wouldn't even send my exes there to die.

She comes in at 5 am, leaves at 1 pm 2 days a week so as to avoid residents as much as possible. We have a 20 year disabled resident whose little 540 sq ft apt HAS NEVER BEEN RE-PAINTED, RE-CARPETED or updated in any way despite her asking. Personally, I find that shameful and neglectful but Ms. B says HUD is not required to do so. (SO MUCH FOR CHRISTIAN ATTITUDES UMRC! ) I have decorated 2 floors, the entire building the last 3 Christmas's using my things and items I purchased with my own funds because there are no funds or allotments for decor or replacement of the 20 yr old furnishings. FOUR yrs in a row our double closet size storage room has been robbed of Christmas decor. The 1st time 2019 there was almost NOTHING left by thief. Mngmt refuses to install any surveillance in the building (Yes, we have a thief or two and visiting thieves too.) citing expense but you can now get DIY systems for under $200 for 4 cameras. After 2 yrs they changed storage locks but refuse to give me a key so I cannot lock up nights during the decorating process over TG wk & wkend. Staff are all gone for a full week or more. Again things disappeared. Ms. B attitude is basically TOO BAD, SO SAD. One of the other facilities was so discouraged by her they did no Christmas decor at all Dec. 2022. REALLY SAD! We have many disabled residents who live independently with part time assistance and this woman has not a shred of empathy. She lifts not a finger for anyone or anything. She has refused to do wellness checks or ph calls on residents who have not been seen (we have had several die (another 1/16/23) or lie injured in their apt's. This is the reality of Sr. places) but we do try to look out for our neighbors. These issues are just the tip of the iceberg and I and others could honestly go on all day.

I have attended various events at this place, and once a year I brought our senior saints from church to their event in March and their staff was very friendly and happy to see us. I planned to this again this year but just got a call from Cheryl who basically told me that events are for people who are interested in their place as a future home. Well, that's a bad thing to say to an influencer on this topic. Within a year we had 2 familes move into Samaritas Senior LIving of Grand Rapids. And last year, I did meet a old work colleague who actually moved to Covenant Living. My point to her was "you never know when someone will need a place like this in the future", as my friends had to make that decision, last year. If I'm going to spend my last days on earth, leave my home, move to a new place, it better be a friendly, happy place and they should not be greedy with an emphasis on money.
