The bustling eatery has only a few items on the menu as they really put their focus into what they are known for, gamjatang. The restaurant has plenty of seating and caters to diners of all ages. I dropped by Mapo Gamjatang with my party of 4 on a weeknight. We of course ordered the sharing size of the gamjatang for 2-3 people as well as ordered the bulgogi and the tonkatsu. Everything was well made and the gamjatang was flavourful and delicious. The dish came with a variety of items including glass noodles, rice cakes, and potatoes. We even ordered an extra set of ramen noodles which soaked up the broth beautifully. The pork bone soup is slightly spicier than other gamjatangs I've had but it didn't' stop me from enjoying the dish. The restaurant also has gloves for you to keep your hands clean as eating pork bone can get quite messy. The gamjatang however, does not include any rice and that comes separately. However, with the addition of the glass noodles and ramen, we were completely stuffed. The sharing portion of the gamjatang definitely feeds more than 2-3 as recommended. I have been anticipating the opening of Mapo since I saw their banner hanging outside the renovating restaurant several months ago. I'm always on the hunt for good gamjatangs! My boyfriend and I came on a weekday at around 6:30 and was surprised to find how packed it was. We were 2nd in line for a table. As we ate our meal, there were always at least 2 separate parties waiting at the door. We ordered a regular gamjatang hotpot to share. Since both of us have a pretty low heat tolerant, we ordered mild. It still had a decent amount of kick to it! There were approximately 8 pieces of pork bone with varying amount of meat. I would say the majority of the pieces were pretty meaty. When the soup reached boiling point, we dug in! I was actually quite disappointed after having the first piece. The meat was not fall off the bone tender. In fact, there were approximately 10% of meat I couldn't get off the bone. The meat did not absorb the flavour of the soup either. However, as the meal progressed, the meat was significantly more flavourful and less amount of meat was stuck onto the bones. Guess you have to be patient and let the soup simmer. There were also other accompaniments in the pot, glass noodle, enoki mushroom, potato, some type of leafy green and onion. I would suggest to not let the glass noodle sit in the pot too long as a combination of heat and liquid makes it turn "gluppy" half way through the meal. The hotpot does not come with rice, which is a bit of let down after paying ~$40 plus tax and tip for the meal. Nonetheless, I will come here again to try their other dishes and get my gamjatang fix due to the convienient location. read more

Menu is more limited and there isnt a choice of the level of spice for the gamjatang. The broth itself you can tell is very legitimate with all kinda of spices. Delicious food with great vibe. Their gamjatang was really different than any other place I've tried. Their meat was not super soft, it was soft but yet chewy. Their Korean rice balls was not what I expected as I've had Korean rice ball elsewhere and it was served in balls, this place gave me a bowl with all the ingredients and you're supposed to make the balls yourself. I was really excited when I heard that this place was going to open in North York. The reason I was excited was not because it was going to be another place that serves Gamjatang but because they will offer the option at an extra cost, a Stir Fried Rice with your Gamjatang leftover, which is very common in South Korea. The place is located on Yonge past Sheppard. Parking can be problematic depending on what time you go there but there's street and Green P parking nearby. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seats. We went for dinner and there were seating available. The only way that we could do the Stir Fried Rice option is to order a Gamjatang Hotpot for 2 or more people. They won't do this for individual portions. The service is efficient and fairly attentive. I don't think we waited long for anything. Now, the rating is partly due to the food. I really thought the food was average at best. The broth was a bit lacking and the meat was not as tender. The worst part is that it doesn't come with rice and you have to pay separately. I really think that the Gamjatang at the certain bird franchise is better. We asked for our Stir Fried Rice afterwards and it was simply just average. The second reason for my rating is the pricing. The meals are not cheap as the Hotpot for 2 was close to $40 and you paying separately for the rice and the fried rice option. Been here couple times with taste and service being always consistent. Menu selection is filled with many choices but tonight feel like the traditional go to dishes - Pork Bone Soup. To start, there's the refillable side dishes which is usually offered at these Korean restaurants. No standouts here but nice little appetizers. One of my favorites is the Pork Bone Soup which can be served with white rice or instant noodles. I always choose spicy but it didn't have the kick I was expecting. However soup was hot and meat was tasty and very tender. Noodles usually don't come with pork bone soup at other restaurants so nice little twist for those that prefer noodles over rice. Korean pork bone soup was suggested for lunch Sunday afternoon, a quick search on Yelp, I found this place. Reading the reviews on our way, I was gonna say we should just go to our usual safe place in Yonge & Finch area. But my friend said let just try it and see. As the two of us sat down, surrounded by Korean focused on the stone bowl or big pot of Pork Bone Soup in front of them, I can tell we are at a good authentic restaurant. The stone bowls of pork bone soup and ramen caught my friend's attention and he was gonna order that. I suggested the pot style as there would be more pork bone for us, as we both didn't have anything for breakfast. (And there are always option to add the ramen as we go along.) The regular size pot was bigger than I expected. Loaded with pork bone, the perilla leafs and seeds on top really makes the dish(pot?) looks interesting. (As the personal stone bowl size usually doesn't have perilla leafs on top like that, some most affordable places would skip the perilla seeds when they serve the pork bone soup) Pork bones are flavourful and tender enough that is easily taken off the bones. Enoki mushrooms are done as we working on the first bone, then potatoes are ready. Second pieces of bone can go with some sweet potato noodles and the vegetables in the soup. After all that, can go for some soup with the rice cake (I suspected that they actually are dough flake pieces) nice and chewy, a different texture in the soup. By now my friend already feeling full and was glad that we didn't add ramen as extra into the soup. We were thinking if it's not enough, we would also order the fried rice at the end. As the soup are not heavily spiced with hot pepper, it's very mild and should be a good choice for families to enjoy. The regular size should be enough for 3 people, and that's without ordering any of the extra item for the soup or any rice on the side or at the end as fried rice. So I really would urge others to give this place a shot and draw your own conclusions. I had to give 3 stars for my own experience because I've never been so thirsty after eating a bowl of gamjatang. As their star dish and given the limited menu options, I expected the flavour profile to be a lot better but it really was sitting at average. I ordered the ramyeon version and I wished they added a few veggies to balance how heavy everything tasted (it was straight up packaged ramen noodles with pork bones and soup). Rice was so dried, it tasted like more than 2 days and they used to serve the'corn cheese' on the hot plate. Why restaurant changed the food when it gets popular? Oh it is more expensive of course. But there seems to be a lot of other customers speaking Korean and seemed happily eating, so the restaurant must be doing something right. We were fortunate to get a table right away, however it typically is tough to get a table here. The entree choices are limited, favored meal size for for +2, and about 50% of the dishes had some level of spiciness. We started the meal with the usual korean side dishes, although the side dishes seem limited in quantity and variety. When our main dishes arrived, the meat was very tender and easily fell off the bone. The price point was also quite good, and the waitress came by twice to check up on us. Food is good, service is good, parking is only through paid, and wait times can be long. I was soo excited to try this place as soon as I saw a picture of it on IG. The pork bone soup with ramen noodles looked hella delicious in the pictures but I was left very underwhelmed with my experience. I came around 9 PM on a Monday night - it wasn't busy at all so we were seated right away. Of course, my friend and I had to get the gamjatang ramyeon as that seems to be the hype here. The only good part about this dish is that the meat was very tender and fell right off the bone. Besides that I didn't really enjoy it. The broth was already salty on the first taste and got saltier the more I ate it... It was also way too thick so the noodles absorbed the broth pretty quickly too and eventually I barely had any broth to sip throughout my meal :( tbh this looked better than it tasted, which is a huge bummer.... We also ordered the vegetable dumplings too! That was decent. But it is dumplings ... how can you mess that up?? Despite the overall disappointment in the food, the service was at least very friendly and prompt! We got all of our orders taken and food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. Surprisingly the waitress even checked up on us, which I rarely ever experience in Korean restaurants. Sadly I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and am not very likely to return. I've gone twice so far. Once for lunch, and once for dinner. Atmosphere? It is beautiful! So clean... almost reminds me of a japanese restaurant but it isn't haha. The wood and music are all so calming and make the soul feel warm! Service/Staff? The service is okay. Some staff seem more friendly than others and they all seem to work together nicely so that's good. Food/Menu/Pricing? The menu is limited. It is a specialty place just for gamjatang but they have a few more item you can choose from. Not a lot of options though for one person. It seems like more of a sharing place for 2-4 people dishes. This place specializes in korean pork bone stew. The soup base is very different from other places. It is much thicker, darker, and black peppery. It feels like they stew the pork bone for a lot longer than other places, so much that the tender meat soaks up all the spices from the soup. There's so much savoriness in the soup that I almost suspect one of the secret ingredients is Shin ramen flavor packet xD. The restaurant is clean, bright, and service is decent. They don't give a huge selection of side dishes, just the standard kimchi, pickled radish, and bean sprouts. The kimchi is the fresh kind, not too fermented, and just amazing. Menu: There is non pork bone soup stuff, but not sure why you would go to a restaurant best known for pork bone soup and not order pork bone soup. I got their pork bone soup with rice, while my coworker got it with ramen. We both loved it, it is a bit pricier than the usual by maybe a $1-2 but honestly well worth it. Parking is a bit rough since it is paid street parking. Service: No issues. They got a nice patio going on too. Overall: I think I would come back more often if it is easier to find parking. Spicy mapo ppyeojjim made me crave for soju definitely lol. Portion was huge and it was great. It was also kind of spicy as well, so keep that in mind. This porkbone soup was delicious! 3 of us ordered one to share (the smaller size) and it was still too much to share! We added the glass noodles and had meant to order the rice with it at the end but we were so stuffed from the food we decided not to order. My other friends ordered other dishes and really enjoyed it. Our service was also really good and they kept refilling our dishes. I would say that if you have any vegetarian friends this is not the place to go to as they only have dumplings and rice balls as a veggie dish. We had a party of 8 and were able to reserve a table even though it's usually walk-in only. We ordered two pork bone soups, two spicy pork bone dishes (superrrr spicy, you have been warned), korean rice balls (that you roll into balls yourself). There was so much goodness in the soup. You can ask them for more soup base because there's more to eat than there is liquid. Once you're finished with the soup, you can get all the meaty pieces to go (that is if you haven't finished everything) and whatever little bit is leftover, you can ask them for rice. They'll cook the rice with nori over the fire again and make it super crispy and tasty. Come with an empty stomach and leave super satisfied! read more

Their menu is not big but it's a good thing because they are putting their focus on one to make it great. While we were here there was a constant flow of patrons. So I went there a third time, gave them about $50+ at this point breaking my promise not to come back because our friends meetup was taking there and it's too cold outside to make different suggestions. The place was relatively packed and it seems being able to eat porkbone soup at Yonge-sheppard location is a decent deal. As usual, the napkins weren't setup, so when I asked for one, the difference this time is they had metal napkin dispenser prepared this time (metal container where napkins are held). This one I like, but either just having some napkins given out during initial setup or just have that dispenser ready beforehand would be good. Fortunately, we didn't wait 50 minutes this time and food came out quickly. Large porkbone soup actually seemed larger in bowl size compared to my friend who ordered regular (was too lazy to compare, but if someone can, great). Food was good, but not too much meat on the bones so I have to do some digging and disassembly process then throw the bones away and there are very small bits of crystal noodles. So basically it's just a soup with pork bones in them with some kimchi and a little bit of noodles. Honestly, just having some potatoes would make food composition more appealing but personal opinion. My 3rd visit was more pleasant, and normal, that it feels like 3.5 now. If u are a big fans of gamjatang (Korean pork bone soup), you definitely need to visit this place. Their gamjatang is flavourful and spicy, and the pork bone is super soft and tender. I ordered the gamjatang with ramen. Unlike the normal gamjatang, it serves with Korean instant noodle instead of rice. I never tried this combination before, but I personally think instant noodle match better with gamjatang than rice. We also order the deep-fried pork chop with rice and salad. The size of the deep-fried pork chop is huge, it's almost double the size of the regular deep-fried pork chop that you can get from normal Korean restaurant. Unlike the normal tonkatsu sauce, this place serves their deep-fried pork chop with their homemade sweet apple tonkatsu sauce.
