Myself and 3 friends came here on a Thursday night to play pool, there were no more than 5 other people in the bar. We all ordered drinks and started a game once two people had finished theirs. Not even 15 minutes in, the bartender came over and told us we were being really slow and to hurry up. We brushed it off and kept playing. He came over again, and continued to berate us saying people were waiting and we had to get off the table. None of the other very friendly people (with whom we had been talking to) had even asked us to play next. He was was extremely aggressive and rude. He took the remaining 3 pool balls off the table, and shoved a few quarters at us. Will not be going back, and will be telling my friends to avoid this "bar". read more

The Williamsburg scene is liable to drive me to vomit or cry, especially at the end of the night. And I generally think that North Williamsburg is pretty much Bushwick; dirty, sketchy, depressing, and remote. Cash only establishments piss me off. On top of this, I'm a horrible dancer, especially if I can't hide behind making ironic and skilless gyrations to the beats of hip-hop. Yet, none of these conditions (plus the rain/hail of last Friday night) prevented me from having an unreal time at Maracuja. I'm giving Maracuja five stars just for the bar and impromptu wooden dance floor, and the fact that food is involved at all only impresses me further. A part of the awesomeness of the time I had here can be attributed to the fact that I was with a perfect mix of great people. Riding on a buzz cultivated much earlier in the evening, we kind of just wound up here. I made a beeline for the bar, and was in that "surprise me" mood. "Well," said the kind female bartender, "Our punch is really good." And it was, for being punch. It was $8 or $9 (it's all a blur), but with the strength of as many drinks as the dollars in its price. Then the music began (or had it always been playing?). It was ALL be-boppy, diner-y, swing type stuff. Usually, places and/or deejays do this a little bit, but never had I been in a situation that was NOT deliberately themed towards this era that was so relentless in its musical genre. At one point, my drunk ass went up there calling for hip-hop. A lady with gold between her teeth said, "No. No hip-hop. We NEVER play hip-hop. We HATE hip-hop." At first, I wanted to default by acting indignant for being thus rebuffed, but then something weird happened and I just got into it. Yes, by refusing to change their song selection even one tiny bit, the Maracuja staff commanded all our respect and opened our minds to jiving to songs normally reminiscent of the most contrived Quentin Tarantino film soundtracks and possibly bar mitzvah reception repertoires. I got into twirling around with my buddies, and following their lead in the dance moves of the '40s through '70s. Soon, I started feeling like I was a part of good old boy Americana, earnestly forgetting the reality of how I may have been marginalized or persecuted or simply not here during this era. I was having a fine time (and a lot of punch), and it was "a gas." Mysteriously enough, I had no hangover the next day. I was, however, sore from head to toe, wondering, with a smile on my face, "Where WAS that crazy place?" It was Maracuja. read more

It's not that they're not pretentious - they just prefer ironical representations. Never had a pickleback? Stay right there. The waiter will be around to see if you'd like some yuca fries, or maybe a cheesesteak sandwich to nosh on. CAN there exist a single true neighborhood bar? IS Maracuja a microcosmic biosphere, with systemic, proportional representations of all of Williamsburg's perks and jerks? Without a doubt, Maracuja is my favorite bar in all of New York City, and therefore the World. All of my Very Important Criteria are fulfilled: * The drinks are adequate and sensibly priced. I'll pay $11 for a good Manhattan but I'd just as soon pay $3 for a PBR out of the beer spout thing * The music is excellent, it's what I play at my own parties. Heavy on the Motown. * Cocktail waitrons. The bar gets crowded, don't make me arm wrestle for my drinks! * Best backyard in Brooklyn. It's not like the backyard at Spuytin Duyvil where you feel like you're sitting in a parking lot, or at No Name where you're sitting on the floor in an air shaft. It's perfect. And the cocktail waitress means you don't have to leave it. * Cheesesteaks. Check. * Soft, dim lighting. I have to see these ugly people enough on the subway. * A smart floorplan. Plenty of seating when you need it, and enough space between for a makeshift dance floor. * Well-behaved clientele. Not a lot of yelling or horseplay. * Very friendly bar staff. Question... What do you get when the two nicest people to ever walk the face of the earth get married and give birth to a bar? Answer: Maracuja - the perfect bar. Charlie and Connie are just fantastic human beings and they've created a wonderful bar. The decor is breath-taking, from the vine covered front to the beautifully painted ceiling to the stringed lights and the magical backyard garden. The beer selection is not massive, but features quality microbrews at reasonable prices for Williamsburg. And the food is shockingly delicious. They have a simple menu, but the homemade empanadas are to die for and the chicken (and steak) cheesesteaks are the best in town. The bar is very low-key 90% of the time, but gets crowded late on Fridays and Saturdays. The lack of a television keeps the jocks away! read more

I can't stand this bar. Maybe I'm not hipster enough? People there are either too cool or think they are too cool. And music is so loud that you have to yell at your friends. Like, I get it, it's a bar, but my ears hurt and i'm not at a concert. Their patio is very awkward. I've always ended up standing in the middle of 5 tables listening to all kind of amazing conversations people are having. Didn't see the hype about Maracuja. Came here for a friend's birthday gathering on a Saturday night in January. There was already drama once I walked in - apparently a friend of mine took a pic of the decor and was brusquely addressed for doing so rather than saying 'excuse me sir, could you please not do that' or i don't know, have a sign up? That aside, the bartender was cool. We were a large group(ten people total) and we got seating by the door. A plus 'cause the place was packed. We got some food - sliders and fries. Downside was that we had to grab it ourselves from the bar in addition to drinks. With no trays even to help you out with the load. I wanted to like Maracuja, but there seems to be a split between being as hip as one of those spots you'd see on a TV show and actually providing a good all-around experience. This review is in reference to anyone who wants to play pool here. I've been to Maracuja a number of times and always had a nice time. The happy hour is very good, the ambience is nice and I always thought the bartenders were very polite. I came here yesterday about 7:00pm with my friends in hopes of playing so pool. The balls were racked on the table, so we started asking around as to who was playing. These two grease balls took their sweet-ass time to play their game. The table was racked a good 15 minutes before they even started to play. Two of my friends played them afterwards and so on, since the guys were very good. I have NO problem losing in pool. Good for the guys who are so good. My only issue is that they were playing "bar rules" which essentially meant that anything they did was correct and anything we did was incorrect. I may not be the best pool player in the world, but I've played enough pool in bars and pool halls my entire life to know what the set rules are. If you scratch on an eight ball - you lose. Plain and simple. I dont care what rules you play by, this is just a freaking fact. They literally stopped the game and kept asking the woman bartender what the "house rules" were for this situation. Why the hell did they need to get the busy bartender involved. It was SO LAME and SO ANNOYING!!! Just admit defeat and move on with your greasy selves. Their friends were total jerks too, getting involved asking what rules we were playing by, whether rules had been set up before the game and if not then you have to go by the bar rules rather than APA rules - it was so douchy that we just left. So yeah, I had a real shit time here and really recommend that the bar set up a notice with some basic rules to prevent douchebag assholes from running the table all night long. I will NOT be coming back here again to play pool. I will take my business to either the Levee, East River Bar or Zabloski's (even though their table is tiny). I never had an issue like this in all the years I've been playing. If you're looking for a good cheap drink, however, then this bar is just fine. read more

Cute bar with a sign that makes it look like a german beer garden. I asked the bartender about it and he explained that it's an old eastern european neighborhood, so that's where the sign comes from. Ah i see... I ordered the special, marakuja. The bartender carefully explained that it is pronounced Ma da ku sha!! Just so we're clear, it's a sweet drink but all natural! Meanwhile a Neil Young track is playing - Miner for a Heart of Gold. Later in the night Iggy & the Stooges were on. Good music, chill vibe, and they have a pool table in back. Came here once because the arepa place down the block was way too packed, and another time to get some fuel for a board game social. Good place for a stopover or settling in for the night. It's a good thing that this place is a 12-minute walk away from my loft rather than right across the street. Otherwise both my wallet and my liver would be in even more danger than they already were. It was just *that* comfortable. I went here on the strength of Joi B's suggestion and ordered something other than wine. Jim Beam=$6, fair 'nuff. There was a brief panicky moment where we thought that the bartender said $18 rather than "thank you," but she came back with $8 in change and all was right with the world. The music ricocheted between stuff my dad would like, stuff my husband's dad would like, and The Smiths, which made for a surprisingly good nostalgia-inducing blend. The crowd was a nice mix and a bit less self-consciously hip than you'll find at most bars around these parts. I have no complaints. read more

I am still confused by this place. Its cash only, not really cheap, it has a pool table? Soooo this describes every dive bar I have ever been too. The back yard is the only saving grace, which is nice but there is nicer ones on the block. Whatever it was packed, full of what appeared to be the Williamsburg singles dating scene. I guess that is appealing for people... Still totally lost on this place, I guess it is the Williamsburg trend to head towards the median because it feels alternative. I really liked this place. We went after hitting a few other bars in the 'hood and I couldn't drink because of a terrible headache. The bartender was super nice about the fact I didn't feel well and made sure that my water was filled at all times. My group wanted to stay inside so I didn't really get to enjoy the patio but after glancing back at it when hitting the restroom I think it is a place where I could spend a significant amount of time sitting around drinking and talking. Hopefully I will be back in the 'hood at some point and will be able to do just that. read more

This bar has one big thing going for it - its back patio. It is a really amazing back patio. Everytime I've wanted to go here it's been because of the beautiful back patio. Otherwise, the staff is friendly and the drinks are good. Also, they serve tasty empanadas. I have always enjoyed my visits, but somehow I always manage to meet insufferable people. Stressful day? Their 'Caipirinha' mixed drink from Brazil will solve everything. This drink is so GOOD. I thought I was in love with Margaritas, but this is my new favorite now. As a vistor from SF, I only came to this place once. But I felt as though, I was back in the bay area. Dim lights, cool music, and a great bartender. The place wasn't too packed and the bartenders were pretty responsive, although we had gotten a table and the waitress didn't come by until after we had already had two rounds up at the bar. Maracuja has a cozy atmosphere with an AMAZING back patio- I continue to go on a regular basis. It's a more laid back crowd than other bars in the neighborhood, but the drinks and music are great. Charlie and Connie are friendly friendly bartenders and will make you the best White Russian you'll ever have. The prices are good and the new menu (featuring cheesesteaks) is exactly what you need. read more

This might be one of my new favorite bars. I came here on a Saturday night with a small group (5 people) meeting a few more friends who live nearby. The bartender, who now I know is the owner, Charlie, was more that attentive to us and made us feel welcome immediately. He even replaced my La Fin Du Monde when I accidentally dropped it outside with no questions and waved away any money I offered. The food is good. It's a bar reminds me of the Brooklyn Ale House. Dim lightings with a pool table and music selected with their taste. What happened to the ceiling?Normally I do not go to a bar unless my friends draw me there, so any bar would not be my favorite spot to spend time. However this bar has plenty of space and seatings and not too loud to hear what friends are saying. The bartenders are nice and easy to talk to, and drinks are made simple and quick. I visited here for my 25th birthday way back in October. The yucca fries were great! We ordered a LOT of those. I wasn't very impressed with the drinks. The ratio just seemed a bit off. Some were strong, some were watery. I didn't see much consistency, except for the food. I just wasn't in-tuned to the atmosphere. I guess I expected something different because it was for my 25th. No one went outside because the weather was crappy. I was upset because I heard the garden is nice. I still enjoyed myself, and I would like to go back to experience everything the place claims to offer. It's definitely a nice place to just chill out at. read more

I've been here a couple of times; most recently last night after having dinner at nearby Caracas Arepa Bar. We came in since HH at Caracas was over and Maracuja has HH until 8pm. The first thing I'll tell you from the few times I've been here is that it's always dark! So by now I can tell it's just how they do it. Drink specials are ok, nothing to rave about... $4 drafts, $4 basic well drinks. They have food, but I've never tried any of it. Pool table in the back and booths. The real star, IMO of Maracuja is the garden in the back. You'd never know it was there unless you saw the sign out front that the garden is open...even then you'd walk in and think " there's a garden? Where the heck is the garden"... then you'll find someone from the bar or walk through a non-descript door and viola!...the garden. You go outside, and it opens to decent sized space with small and longer tables. The center area is open (for movement, socializing? It's cobblestone so I know it's not for any dancing). there are lots of plants and shade and a gazebo structure to provide additional shade and intimacy. It's actually a really great spot! My only real gripe w/ this spot on the times I've been there is the music. I don't really remember what they were playing... probably just didn't recognize it; but music is very subjective and so it just wasn't my cup of tea. It was not offensive enough that I wouldn't come back for a drink or two if i'm in the neighborhood, but I probably wouldn't make this a main spot with so many other places in the area that probably would be more appealing if I wanted to listen to music. read more

Charlie might be the nicest bartender I've ever met. Friendly, easy to talk to, but by no means chatty. I can't remember the last time I felt affection toward the dude pouring me vodkas. The bar is really well stocked too, they pretty much have everything you want. Which is awesome if you're feeling experimental. A Stoli and soda will cost you $7, which is just about right. Their glasses were smaller than I would have liked but Charlie gives you a good pour. The bar itself is pretty much a dive. It's got an awesome juke box, pool table, and booths in the back for groups. The outdoor garden is fantastic. Adorable. Too bad it's so cold all the time in NY. But anyway, with so many pretentious bars in the area (many on the same street!), Marajuca is a happy little gem. Very glad to have discovered it. read more

Very nice and low key bar. Outside of one guy playing pool looking at me like he had never seen a black woman before, it was a pleasant experience. The real sell of this place is the outside seating area with loads of lighting but not alot of noise. Great for talking until the smokers come and you leave the space with secondhand cancer.
