We hosted our wedding weekend welcome party at Woodhul Wine Bar after having had drinks here with our friends one night and falling in love with the ambiance and the menu. We were desperately in search of a new spot to host our event after our original venue suddenly shut down, and in hindsight, that was probably the best thing to have happened to us, because everything about Woodhul is just fantastic - from the food, to the drinks, to the people. A huge shout out to Dan who not only helped us get our event organized in a pinch, but also ensured that the open bar and light bites were flowing, ensured that our family and friends felt welcomed and "at home", and who is just overall a really genuine and sweet human. I used to come here all the time. (The server even came up to me and told me he remembered me). But on this particular night I was alone and needed to use the bathroom. The server (who claimed he remembered me) stopped me before I entered the bathroom and said "you need to be careful, you can't bring your drink in the bathroom. I'll watch it for you." Woodhul is one of my favorite wine bars to go to in the area! The atmosphere is great for either a date or catching up with a group of friends. They have a smaller list than some wine bars, but the wines they choose are good. I especially enjoyed the Barolo and, surprisingly, the Troublemaker Red Blend which I will come back for again and again. It is a heavy wine and unmistakably New World, the kind of wine you'd have with barbecue and gamey meats. I never expected to fall in love with it to this extent, but when the heart wants a heavy New World wine, that's what it wants. I highly recommend trying it if you are into big, bold, fruit forward red blends. One day, I'll try some of their other wines, but for now the Troublemaker has captured my heart. However, while in the mood of globetrotters, she found another place way more interesting. On the way back to Emmanuel's (our fantastic host from Venezuela thought airbnb), we passed in front of this place, so we suspected that the stars were shinning on a way that it was our destiny to go inside... The decoration of the place made us feel comfortable. The bartender was swinging&moving at the rhythm of the songs sounding while pouring our wine's election on fancy cups. I loved the Ecuadorian gentlemen helping that barman (I think he was the most charming being with his feet strongly posed on the floor). I have no clue how it happened, but after some interrogations by the bartender, we ended up, knowing the @owner of the joint. He loved how we were from South America and he kept telling us stories about his backpacker's days down there (Guatemala and South Easter of Mexico). I had a preprandial xa at Sort Of Wine Bar, and a post-theater pinot at Woodul just across the street, and found a ~70% overlap in offerings. The N4th wine bar-off, below: Romance factor: Where Woodhul's ambiance is slightly bustling, Sort Of's is definitively "intimate". Advantage: Somewhat. For groups: Woodul wins. Groups of 3, 5, 7+ can sit and sip around one of several bar tables. For food: Elsewhere. SO's cheese and charcuterie plates are more more presenting and more palatable, but less substantial than Woodhul's sandwiches and small bites. Get your grub at one of a billion neighboring destination restaurants instead. For snacks: Woodhul. Free popcorn FTW. For "the wine list": Woodhul, by a nose. The menu is a little longer, but truthfully neither bar is for buffs (I doubt there's a sommelier on the block); hit up Brooklyn Winery or Oenology instead if you're an aficionado. The Food was good the wine was good the 2 orders of whiskey ok meaning the first one was not what I expected, the second one was better, but the portions and they never offered a house drink I purchased 3 drinks, but it's Manhattan I mean Brooklyn. The bartender was too busy attending to the other end of the bar with conversation and was very inattentive. He was the only one there and he needed assistance, because the bar back/food preparer was unable to touch drinks or transactions. The bar was not busy. So I had to initially get the bartenders attention via the other guy(bar back food preparer) I wanted to order food he brings me the bill. He was not attentive at all. I would have given 3 stars or maybe less, but the food was good. I have no idea how this place is being ran, but for a first experience I have to seriously think about going back.
