This was once the best, most highly recommended vet in the Keys. Those days ended when it was sold to a corporation. After our dog's yearly exam, which went very well and was expensive but not outrageous, the vet recommended a dental cleaning. A few days later we received a sample invoice for the cleaning which was incredibly expensive. I replied that we could not afford the cleaning this year. Our dog is young, has no substantial dental issues and the quote was well over a thousand dollars. Within 24 hours, I received a phone call from one of the vets (who was not blatantly rude but wasn't very polite either) informing me that our dog's urine sample had blood and protein in it and it was important that we bring him in for X-rays. I was told there was no evidence of infection (which could be treated with relatively inexpensive antibiotics) but it was most likely "crystals, like kidney stones, or it could possibly be a tumor." Our last dog passed from cancer while in their care. The suggestion hit hard like she knew it would. Despite being scared for my dog's health, I could not get past the feeling that this was a cash grab. I felt that the moment I said "no" to the dental cleaning, they switched to high pressure sales tactics like a desperate salesman trying to hit his sales goal for the month. I had my dog's records sent to a new vet and made an appointment for one week after his yearly visit at Marathon. I collected his first morning urine, brought it to the new vet who was able to test it right in their building rather than send it out to a lab and THANK GOD- it was fine. While I am not accusing Marathon of faking a lab report, I am thankful I trusted my instincts and went to another vet. Maybe there was a mistake with the lab. There was never the suggestion of a second urine test--it was straight to 400 plus dollars worth of X-rays and the strategic mention of a possible tumor that will keep me from ever going back to this establishment. We love our pets. We will sacrifice a lot to keep them healthy. If this place is manipulating that love to fleece their customers, they should be very ashamed. read more

I went with my husband several times to take his two Jack Russell Terriers to get their yearly shots and get allergy medicine, etc. The vets were all very young and not all that experienced, in my opinion. Was the only office in the Keys that was able to properly diagnose my dog with a minor issue as opposed to "stage 4 cancer" that she would "die from" within one to two years (Stacey Kimball of Island Paws in Islamorada made this ridiculous diagnosis by touch only, no confirmation cytology, bloodwork, or X-rays). That was over two years ago and all she needed was anal gland supplements and pumpkin in her diet and more frequent anal gland extractions. I wish that I could give them 10 stars!! We needed boarding, doctor care, x-rays, and prescription medicine. They cared for our 8yo Cockapoo like the treasure that he is (to us)! When we pulled into the parking lot, he couldn't wait to get out of the car and inside. Believe me, that was a very welcome and noticeable difference from our home vet visits!! We were greeted warmly from the receptionist and seen by Dr. Whipple and Londyn. Our Alvin loved them both! Even though we were from out of town, we were treated like a local. We can not say enough about the kindness and compassion the staff used every step of the way with Alvin. He was made comfortable for a thorough examination and for x-rays. We were so appreciative. Personally, I don't feel like we were overcharged for anything, as some other posts claim. EVERYTHING costs more down here, and I feel like they did everything they could to keep me informed about what things were going to cost before any treatment was even given. There were no surprises. This is the only vet hospital in the Keys that gave truthful information and was able to provide diagnosis for a plugged anal glad that Island Paws in Islamorada (that my husband is actually friends with the office manager/husband of head veterinarian) told us my dog had over 90% chance stage 4 cancer with feeling the anal gland alone without ANY other tests (X-ray, bloodwork, cytology, MRI). The other vet (Island Paws) recommended I go to LeadER in Homestead to schedule cancer diagnosis and treatment. LeadER wanted to charge $10,000 (no joke) to just DIAGNOSIS the cancer (did not include surgery or anything else). LeadER wanted me to do a complete body, MRI and CT to give the best diagnosis possible for "my baby". Marathon vet got us closer to the truth for about $325 by taking blood work and a cytology of the inflamed/impacted anal gland. We had an appointment with a well known Veterinary cancer specialist in Ft. Lauderdale and after both their vet and surgeon looked at my dog, they agreed with Marathon Vet's diagnosis over LeadER and Island Paws. Marathon Vet is one of the only Veterinary hospitals capable of caring for exotic animals, as they have vets that care for animals at the Wild Bird Center, the Sea Turtle Hospital, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Animal Farm, and even Aquarium Encounters, among others. Since having this experience with my sweet dog, I take the hour drive to go to Marathon to have my pets seen here over all the veterinary hospitals in the Upper Keys. read more

My husband, English bulldog (Charlie) and I just drove down from Boston. On the second or third day, we could tell he was not feeling well. He wouldn't eat or even go outside to relieve himself. We noticed that he started developing welts all over his body. When we called the hospital, not only did they get him in immediately (without charging the emergency visit) and treated him, they followed up with a call later in the afternoon to check in on him. A really disappointing experience after Lola's supposedly routine teeth cleaning! A total lack of communication and unprofessionalism - doctor actually said to me on the phone later that "she was whining and carrying on" when she awoke from the anesthesia and this was the reason, I only learned much later, that they asked me to pick Lola up early (they said they don't keep dogs if they are agitated (?! side effect ya think from anesthesia!?) It's like they wanted her out of their hair. I had to bring her home still heavily sedated. Unacceptable! (I was caught off guard by this terrible service because the first time we went we had good experience - friendly, attentive staff, etc.) Long summary here but I feel it's necessary: I dropped Lola off at 7:30am and was told on three separate occasions that pick up time would be at 3:30 - with no mention that I could expect it would be earlier. At 10:30am, I received a voice mail from the doctor saying that everything went well and I could come pick her up. I called back to confirm as I was surprised. Upon arriving at 11:30am and paying $680 we were told that the doctor would come into the exam room and "go over the costs" (?). When Lola came into the room with the tech, she was obviously very sedated - walking slowly, uncoordinated, and looked like she didn't recognize us. The tech didn't say much except that she would sleep most of the day. I had to ask all the questions and she just repeated that the doctor said everything went well. I asked to see the doctor and they said she was "in a procedure right now." The doctor never came in to talk with us, did not communicate findings from the procedure (except briefly over the phone), and nobody gave us any specific home care instructions; e.g., when to feed her, if she'd be in discomfort, etc. While we waited for the taxi, Lola appeared really dazed and confused. When she could barely walk to the taxi, I hesitated to take her home but again just assumed the staff knew what they were doing - should've gone with my gut! I became more worried when on the ride home she was falling all over the place - just flopping around - I had to ask the driver to go slower. We had to lift her out of the taxi, carry her onto our boat and down the stairs. Very distressing! Once home, Lola flopped down on the floor. For three hours she continually cried in her sleep, making strange vocalizations we've never heard before. I called the office, very upset, asking why they released Lola while she was still heavily sedated. Wasn't it their job to observe her in recovery from anesthesia?? Their response: she was released early because of "aggressive" behavior in the cage upon waking up from the anesthesia - agitated, gnawing on the crate, screaming. Lola has never been like this. Of course she was scared and anxious waking up in a cage! In the doctor's words: "she was whining and carrying on." Seriously?! How unprofessional, uncaring, and rude! It's like they didn't want to deal with her. Nobody explained that we would see behavioral changes due to anesthesia after the procedure. I learned only after reading online that agitation and disorientation are common after anesthesia. "An animal may exhibit behavioral changes for several days after general anesthesia." Why did I have to learn this myself after the fact? Why wasn't I told this?? Why wasn't she kept longer for observation? I asked why they couldn't remove her from the cage? The doctor said she doesn't have the staff to watch her. What kind of answer is that? If that's the case, then don't do these procedures if you do not have sufficient caretakers - and release a pet before they are well enough to go home. The worst part is not communicating this fully to us, its the least they should do. The doctor said that she had to sedate Lola again after the procedure. And they didn't communicate this either at pick up! There was a serious lack of communication on so many levels. If they had given me more details about why they released her early, I could have been more prepared. In reality, though, the doctor should have waited to release Lola until she could talk to me in person. We still have questions: is she experiencing pain in her gums?? Pain in her throat? Was she crying because of pain or anxiety or both? There was no explanation of what to feed her, when, how much? Softened kibble, canned food? Hard treats starting when? Will she be sore from the cleaning? Sore throat from anesthesia? There weren't even any written materials answering these questions. This vet hospital is convenient - just 4 minutes from our marina - yet I will absolutely not be going back. I just wish I had waited to have Lola's teeth cleaned when we go back up north in May. Thank god she did not need any extractions - I can't even imagine what that would've been like. read more

We recently lost our Puggle, 14 years old, while vacationing in Marathon Key, Florida. Marathon Veterinary Hospital was there for us right when they opened in the morning. We arrived, got a special room and got to spend a few minutes together to say our goodbyes. We received her ashes a week later and MVH also delivered her blankets, bed, and toy back to us. Recently, I had to do one of the hardest things in my life. I had to take my cat that I've had for 13 years and my only pet in my lifetime to the vet's office to have him put to sleep. It was all done at the Marathon Veterinary Hospital and I'm writing this to let you all know how wonderful and caring those people are. They are so professional, so sympathetic and they did everything they could to make me and my sweet boy feel as comfortable as possible. Back in early December, I noticed that he was losing weight so I took him to a very popular veterinarian in Marathon. In September, he was 14 pounds and in December, he was 11. They did blood work and said that everything looked good and thought maybe the reason he wasn't eating was because he had some tartar on his teeth that they chipped off. I believed them but then had to take him back when it became apparent that this was not the reason he wasn't eating. The doctor gave me some medications and a food and appetite stimulator, but they never did an x-ray or test. This went on for about 2 months - by this time, my cat was not eating or pooping and he was still losing weight. They never even suggested an x-ray or an ultrasound to see what was going on. After more phone calls to that doctor (several of which were unanswered), I didn't know what to do so I stopped in at the Marathon Veterinary Hospital. A really wonderful person there looked at me and said "what's going on with your cat" and I told her the whole story and she said "we need to get you in here tomorrow" and she did. They did an x-ray and found that he was severely constipated and an ultrasound at my request that showed there was fluid in his abdomen and a dark area on his liver. My cat was at least 15 years old. I rescued him in 2010 and they told me he was about two years old but who really knows. Dr. Andrea gave me laxatives for him and after a few days took another x-ray and the blockage was gone and he started to eat and poop and we thought oh good, that's what it was. But after a few more days, he wasn't eating again. He also had no bowel movements so after five days I called and made an appointment to see Dr. Andréa, who is wonderful. By now, he was not even 9 pounds. She took another x-ray which showed a lot of abdominal fluid. So with that, the results of his ultrasound, his past history, his age and all she knew about him, she recommended that we put him to sleep because she believed he had some sort of liver cancer. So, that's what I did. I'm writing this so that you know that the Marathon Veterinary Hospital is the only place I would take an animal. There are three veterinarians and a wonderful staff. They are smart, they are professional, compassionate -- I just can't say enough good things about them. They made me feel OK at a really bad time. You should all take your animals to them because they are the best in Marathon and probably in the Keys. read more

Our dog had an unfortunate run-in with an unfriendly cat early on a Sunday morning while we were visiting Miami. She was scratched in her right eye and bleeding. We went to the Knowles Animal Clinic where the Vet inspected the scratch and prescribed 3 different eye drops. She recommended we return in 3-4 days for a follow-up. We were leaving Miami the next day heading to Marathon and once we arrived, we contacted the Marathon Veterinary Hospital for the follow-up visit. The Tech staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and after the exam, Dr. Aundria del Pino stated that all evidence of the scratch was gone and our dog was in perfect health. We are very satisfied with the service we received and the cost was very reasonable. read more

This is a beautiful facility! We boarded our small dog while we camped in the keys. The staff is wonderful. Everyone was welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable. They took us on a tour of the hospital and helped us feel comfortable, knowing that our fur baby would be well cared for. We also liked the fact that there were plenty of vets and techs on hand in case our dog needed medical attention. There is a kennel "Mom" on staff who knew the personalities of all the dogs in the small dog area. She was wonderful. We were pleasantly surprised that the rates for boarding were very reasonable. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to Marathon Veterinary Hospital for the wonderful care they gave our dog, Beast. We came in and met with a tech, who asked us several questions to relay to Dr. Jason, who we saw just a few minutes later. He quickly got Beast x-rayed and determined that he had a blockage in his intestinal track from a ham bone he had eaten a couple of days prior. He explained all of our options and the risks and benefits of each option. I particularly liked that they gave a low and high range for the estimate, and explained under what conditions the higher rate would apply (i.e. if the manual extraction did not work and we needed to do surgery). At no time did I ever feel we were being quoted for unnecessary services and the prices were quite reasonable for the type of service they provide. Dr. Jason and the staff answered all of our questions and eased our stress during this difficult time. You can tell that they all really love animals. A few days later I called and spoke to Dr. Gerry, who assured me that the elevated pancreatic lipase levels identified by our regular vet in Miami were to be expected and should decrease on their own (our vet had suggested an expensive treatment plan) and that he would not need further treatment unless there was a deterioration in his condition. Dr Gerry was absolutely right and saved us considerable unnecessary expenses. The following day Dr. Jason called us to follow up on Beast's condition, which is back to normal now thanks to the wonderful care he received from everyone at Marathon Veterinary Hospital. Okay, don't get me wrong, the staff is really nice, but this place is WAY too expensive. I had brought in my guinea pig for a check up because I noticed he wasn't eating his usual foods, and they had prescribed him medication that costed about $400 which had done nothing for him, PLUS an estimated $150 walk in fee. I had to go in again the next week because he kept getting sicker, and I asked them to fully examine him. When I first went in, I first requested for them to look at his teeth. Instead, they denied any complications with the mouth and said it was all stomach problems. when I went in the second time, they all of sudden see a problem with the mouth? This required surgery and hospital stay, which at a DOWN PAYMENT was $500 BUCKS. The surgery itself was going to cost over $1k. At this point I feel hopeless, and there wasn't much left to do. I had called them once I returned home and asked for them to cancel the surgery and to put my baby to rest. I was already upset, but then finding out I had to pay at least $230 to put him down, I was even more upset!! I made it very clear that I am only 17 years old and work a minimum wage job, and this was all too expensive, yet they refuse to cancel any payments. On my way to pick up his ashes they tell me there is ANOTHER $180 payment due?! All of my personal savings were completely swiped away, and I couldn't help but to feel scammed. read more

PLEASE do not take your pet here, I don't want any one else's beloved pet treated like mine!!! It is incredibly expensive (I paid nearly $600) and my dog is still in terrible pain, mostly because of poor decisions made on their part I feel. For what I paid, my dog should not be in this condition. In my opinion, they either don't know what they're doing or simply don't care. I took my dog in to have an infected salivary gland drained that had grown very large very rapidly. The Dr. Didn't drain it, but recommended $200 culture test be done and gave us antibiotics. We trusted that the antibiotics would take care of it like she said. 2 days go by and it continues to grow and gets huge. (They could give us no explanation why this this happened to my dog in the first place by the way). The cyst ends up rupturing and exploding pus and blood all over and my dog is now in excruciating pain. I take him back, and they insist on sedating him to shave and clean the area, because he was in so much pain and sensitive. Yet, when I leave that day, they didn't give me any pain meds for him! He has now been up for 2 days straight, won't lay down, and is MISERABLE. I had to take the day off work to get his pain managed because he's in such awful shape. I called to complain and they didn't seem to care, offered a pathetic speech about "we know how hard it is to see your dog in pain" and prescribed pain meds. OH! And they wanted to make sure to keep in mind he will probably have to get surgery in the future to have it removed. Probably because they are money hungry. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE, I beg you! read more

I have three birds and have had nothing but wonderful experiences with this clinic and especially Dr. Aundria who has gone above and beyond. The entire staff has been exceptional and have taken good care of our animals. Unfortunately, one of my birds has several hard-to-diagnose issues that were eventually solved. Even though the diagnosis for the one bird was heartbreaking, they have been very helpful. Dr. Aundria has done extensive research, consulted with several other veterinarians on several occasions (including pulling Dr. Mader in to see us), and has gone far above and beyond. She is quick to respond to e-mails, remembers details about visits from a year ago, words things in ways that are gentle and in ways we can understand, and is thorough when discussing things on the phone. We have taken one of the other birds in to a different veterinarian, and she too was terrific. The entire staff is. While the prices may be a little higher than at other facilities, it is because they have top-of-the-line equipment and staff. I would recommend this clinic in a heartbeat and would not take any of my pets elsewhere in the keys. read more

The day after Doctor Doug and Jason both called to check on us and said they did everything according to practices. After X-rays and blood work my bill was very reasonable and on par with what I pay at my regular vet in Miami. I had to take him back on July 4th. They had to call in emergency doctor on call who came in specially for my pet. They were friendly and professional. They could have charged me $200 emergency fee, but only charged regular fee($80). Total charges were reasonable. I recommend this veterinarian. 24/7 emergency availability is the only one I know of in the Keys. After seeing the 2 negative reviews I had to write something wonderful about Marathon Veterinary Hospital. The 2 previous reviewers are entitled to their opinions, but I must state that I have 3 dogs and a cat, and would never take my pets to any other veterinarian in the Keys. Dr. Mader and the entire staff including the vet techs and gals at the desk are pretty terrific.. My oldest pittie girl was recently diagnosed with mast cell cancer and had to have surgery to remove some growths in various places on her body. Dr. Mader and his staff could not have been more empathetic and professional as well as taking care of my dog before, during and post surgery. I will always trust these folks to take the best care possible and provide outstanding services. Of course, you always get what you pay for, even with medical care, and my dog's bills for the surgeries and the lab work and meds was not inexpensive. I love my pet enough to open my checkbook for her ultimate well being and outstanding services that Marathon Veterinary provides. There are plenty of other less expensive, less professional and questionable vets to choose from down here. Let me start by saying I have been a multiple dog owner for over 30 years. My dogs are my family. I moved from the Keys 2 years ago and what I miss most is Dr. Kristen and the whole staff at Marathon Veterinary Hospital. I was actually just checking in to see how the hospital is doing after the hurricane and came across a couple negative reviews. I just learned a new lesson. Never believe a review. I have been to many great veterinary facilities in my lifetime. I have had everything from a hip replacement to cancer surgery done on my dogs through the years. I brought my dogs to Marathon Veterinary Hospital for the 8 years I lived in Key West. They are with question the finest veterinary facility I have been to in my life. Great doctors, great techs and the place is state of the art. To the woman who claims she is a medical expert with the one star review you obviously know nothing about veterinary care. When boarding a pet there are rules. If you were too stupid to verify the hotel you were staying at allowed dogs that's your problem not the Vet Hospital. There are dozens of hotels in the keys that allow pets. Maybe you should wake up and not write a fake review because of your incompetence. I will close by saying I now live in Sarasota and there is not one Veterinary facility close to the quality of Marathon Veterinary Hospital. We are staying in marathon for a weeks vacation along with our 2 dogs. Our Rhodesian ridgeback has an autoimmune arthritic disease he has been receiving treatment for over the last year. I thought I had all my bases covered and meds needed for our trip but sure enough day 3 he's not feeling well. I knew we needed to get to a clinic right away as things go south quickly with his disease. I checked reviews on yelp which I'm sad to say there weren't many and made a few phone calls. Monday morning after Super Bowl and needing to get in right away was not easy. When I called Marathon veterinary clinic they said to be there in 1 hour. The entire staff there was welcoming, efficient and very knowledgeable. The tech, Lauren and the vet we saw, dr Andrea were very familiar with my dog's disease and we quickly came to a decision to help him and relieve his pain. We were in and out in an hour and back to vacation mode. The meds helped my guy and I can't thank them enough for their help and sound advice. read more
