This was…read moreon a Sunday in mid April and it wasn't crowded at all, with perhaps only another 5 parties or so in the store. Since our visit was during the off season, they unfortunately only had four types of cookies to choose from - apparently during the summer they have 16 different varieties! While we didn't have that amazing selection, the employee did tell us that they cookies in the tray were less than an hour from the oven! We ended up trying one of each (4 for $8.46): Chocolate Chip Cookie - This cookie has a golden brown ring around the edge and the bottom. It has a delicate crunch along the more well baked portions, but the interior remains soft and gooey. Especially the semisweet chocolate chips, which at only an hour after removal from heat, are still melty. The center of the cookie tastes under baked like raw flour with a somewhat granular and sandy texture. Chocolate Parfait - This is a tall cookie that doesn't seem to spread. It looks more like a small scone or biscuit to be honest. It's quite wan in color, so there's no particular baked crust. Instead, the entire thing is soft and tender, but it's not under baked like the chocolate chip cookie since it all tastes baked through. It's absolutely stuffed with large pieces of Belgian milk chocolate, and like the other cookie, the chocolate is still melted and gooey. Oatmeal Raisin - This cookie has the hardest bake with a darker golden brown bottom creating a great crunch. It's otherwise filled with oats and studded with plenty of sweet raisins. Snickerdoodle - This cookie is surprisingly yellow in color. It has the same chewy and tender texture throughout and tastes like a sugar cookie with cinnamon. I do have to say that all the cookies were super sweet. So sweet I had to drink an entire bottle of water afterwards. I drank more water after the cookies than a 5 miles hike the previous day. Way too sweet for my tastes, but I'm sure most people will be okay with that! Bathrooms - Two larger ones with multiple stalls

The bread was touted as homemade but one of us got burnt bread and it was a tiny piece that sort of broke apart as you tried to eat it. One of us asked for another slice and we were charged another $3-4. We tried two of the cookies and thought they were okay. They are the only place around so it there or bring your own.

Cornbread was excellent. Cake was average. I do wish they had ice cream, but I understand the logistical difficulties there...

Phantom Ranch is a unique experience in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. From the south rim, it is…read moreabout 7.5 miles down the South Kaibab trail or 10 miles via the Bright Angel trail. There's cabins and bunk houses that require a lottery 15 months in advance, which adds to the exclusivity of the experience. Steak dinner is offered by reservations only for $70pp U.S. From 8am- 8pm, there's a cantina open selling all the things you'd want while backpacking, including cold lemonade, beer, wine, snacks, and first aid items. This week, the canyon was bursting with color from all the flowers and vegetation growing after the heavy snow season. This was truly a special experience! The trail to Ribbon Falls/North Rim was closed at one of the bridges and the creek running too high to attempt a safe crossing, so we enjoyed a rest day and cooled off on the banks of the stunning Colorado River. We took pictures of the current ranch as big changes are underway with a new water system getting installed, which will impact access to the ranch for a while. Special mention to the staff, particularly Zach, who went above and beyond to show us hospitality. Also, best of luck to new hire Tyler as he settles into his new role at the ranch! The ranch is currently short-handed, and some of the staff are really feeling the stress, which is starting to show in their interactions with guests. Remember to be patient and kind. The bottom of the Grand Canyon can't be an easy place to live and work.

If you have children who go into withdraws when they are not somehow connected to the internet, this probably isnt the place for you. This place is awesome!! It is literally in the middle of nowhere. Absolutely breathtaking scenery both at the motel, and the drive to and from it. The rooms are quiet, and they are clean and well maintained. We stayed at several places on this trip, and while everywhere we stayed had a HDTV, this was the only one who actually had it connected to a device that produced HD signal, with a DirecTV box that had hundreds of channels. The staff were polite and attentive, but somewhat like the DMV, they were a little dry. Nothing wrong with that, as they are just people. I am a humble guy and I don't expect to have my posterior kissed everywhere I go. We drove down to the river which is about a ten minute drive through the most beautiful desert scenery ever! We also enjoyed breakfast at the restaurant, read restaurant review if interested. If you are into the classic, out of the way places like I am, this is a great experience.

I was also hoping to "rent" a pet from the Animal Sanctuary for the duration of our visit, but alas, checked in too late for that. I'd advise anyone who wants to "rent" a pet to call in advance to understand the process and time cut-off. I loved the room. It was super cute and well-appointed for guests with pets. There were two bowls waiting near the front door, and two adorable sleeping areas - one in a cut-out in the wall, and another a pull-out trundle-style bed. The mercantile/ store was stocked with cute apparel for pet-lovers as well as items for pets. Breakfast was also served in the store in the morning - with lots of interesting and yummy options - like vegan egg bites and chia seed pudding. 10/10 recommend this place!!

The BF Animal Sanctuary was on our schedule (at least 2 of the 4 days) and both reviews and their website looked great. Pros: - Location: Convenient, especially is you're visiting the Sanctuary. On the main road in the north part of Kanab. - Exterior: A newish looking hotel with nice views to the north and west. - Room: Excellent. Our king suite was spacious. One VERY large room included a big bedroom, a good sized kitchen and a spacious bathroom/shower/vanity. It also had plenty of space for storage and large closets. All done with contemporary Scandinavian furniture which minimizes clutter and convenient controls for lighting, ventilation and automatic shades. - Employees: Helpful. People at the reception desk and in the breakfast area/"Mercantile Shop" were all very friendly. - Breakfast: Vegan and very good. Included with the room. While it wasn't a buffet, you could order as much as you'd like. Much of it was homemade and I especially liked the "Overnight Oats". Unusual Pros: - Cats and dogs are encouraged to stay with accommodations in the room and across the property - "Barn Door" to create privacy between the bedroom and bathroom - Free laundry - Free iPad to use while in the room - Nicely equipped kitchen - Plentiful towels - Choice of full daily housekeeping, partial or none - Attractive high desert landscaping - If you'd like merchandise from Best Friends, the Mercantile Shop had everything Cons: - Bath towels for our first day were luxurious. Thinking that the trip to the Grand Canyon would be interesting but coming back would be boring with the same scenery....we were wrong. The morning light and the afternoon light gave such a contrast it seemed like a different way. As for the accommodation, it was clean and comfortable. The shower not only worked but was a decent size. We stayed two nights and mainly used the fridge for our cold water. We filled our water bottles from the sink tap in the evening and had chilled water for our little adventures. I think we would have used the kitchen if we stayed longer. Pamela and Brady are excellent hosts and very attentive if you have a problem.

There is a host on site, but its managed by the Kaibab Ranger District in Fredonia, AZ. Big Springs itself is located on a FS logging and fire road that leads from Fredonia up towards the North Rim area of Grand Canyon. There are several cabins with 1-4 beds in each. The main lodge has a commercial size shared kitchen, dining hall, and comfy lounge area; and bathrooms with showers that have been recently updated. The setting is canyonesque with tall fir spruce, aspen, and pine trees and a gorgeous natural spring you can drink straight from. This spot is perfect for a couples getaway, families, weddings, and especially a group retreat. I hope the forest service finds great replacements for the current hosts who will retire after this year. The husband and wife team added so many personal and homey touches to the cabins and lodge it is clear they really lived their assignment. If you like a little out of the way rustic cabin experiences, Big Springs is for you. I just attended a wedding there and it was perfect.
