It has now been over 5 years since I had PRP injections in my Left shoulder by Dr. Darrow instead of rotator cuff surgery on BOTH of my shoulders by my orthopedist! I have been treated with stem cell therapy and PRP for three different injuries now and each one was 100% successful. My recent treatment was for plantar fasciitis. In the past I was treated for and avoided surgery for two tennis injuries: a torn meniscus in my knee and a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder. I have learned three things: 1) stem cell therapy requires patience and if you expect healing after one treatment, you likely will be disappointed; 2) you have to have trust in the healing process, and 3) you have to explicitly follow doctors instructions for non-use of the treated area of the body. Hi, I'm writing this review for any TMJ sufferers out there. I visited the Joint Rehab Center in mid-January due to significant pain in my TMJs and neck. The symptoms at the onset of my diagnosis were jaw pain, neck pain, occipital neuralgia, vertigo, nausea, and complex migraines with stroke-like symptoms. A CT scan of my TMJs revealed some bilateral flattening of the mandibular condyle bone. The doctor I was seeing at the time didn't call it arthritis, but that's how arthritis begins, and I was in the early stages. Additionally, an MRI of my TMJs showed no disc displacement with a very limited range of motion. When I went to see the wonderful Dr. Grove, my pain level was 10 out of 10. My employer had also asked me to go on short-term disability earlier that week, so I guess you could say my situation was pretty bad. From the initial consultation, Dr. Grove was amazing--hands down, the best doctor I've ever had. As a patient, information is the most important thing to me, and Dr. Grove took the time to educate me about my condition and explain what was causing me pain. In my case, it was the joint capsule, which led to joint instability and caused the disc to shift in and out of place. He provided all the information I needed to feel comfortable and confident in proceeding with PRP and stem cell therapy. Additionally, I have never felt judged by Dr. Grove for showing my emotions or pain on my face. He has always been patient and understanding, no matter how many questions or concerns I've brought up. He truly prioritizes patient care. He even calls his patients the day after an injection to check in and ensure they're doing okay. The entire team is also amazing: Jeff, Evelyn, Christina, and the rest of the gang. As far as results go, I've gotten 3 PRP injections to date, and I feel 50% better than I did at the initial consultation. I haven't ruled out surgery yet, as I'm still taking every possible step to avoid it. I'll be getting another PRP injection soon, followed by stem cell therapy with PRP. I had issues with 3 sites. Bursitis in the greater trochanter (left hip), the tendon that attaches my lateral hamstring to the bone and my hip flexor (left). I had the left hip flexor pain, which was mild, but the pain had been present for 4 years. Nothing helped. Certain positions would make it hurt, but it was not debilitating at all. The lateral hamstring tendon pain was very bad. It limited my activities for the past half year. Dr. Darrow injected all 3 sites with PRP, and all sites are completely healed after just two weeks. Dr. Darrow's PRP treatments for my joints have been key to being fully functional in life (the other part is cutting out inflammatory foods: wheat, dairy, sugar, alcohol). Let me preface by saying my condition was chronic and got progressively worse over time (IMO 20+ years). My issue was sharp pain in my lower left back area to go along with pain/tingling going down my leg. I went to my primary doctor and was told that I may have to live with it but he referred me to an orthopedic doctor who ordered an MRI. They also did some nerve and strength tests. My original diagnosis was "radiculopathy". The doctor showed me my MRI which in turn he stated that one of my discs was arthritic. Treatment plan was physical therapy and a prescription for gabapentin for close to a year at which point we would reassess. If things didn't improve the next step would involve surgery. Surgery on my back didn't sound appealing at all which prompted me to see if there was any other way. For years I have been hearing about athletes getting PRP injections for any number of orthopedic maladies. My thought was, "if all these athletes are getting this done, there must be something to it, right?". So there began my search for information and for a doctor that did this. My due diligence ultimately led me to Dr Marc Darrow and 2 other doctors in the LA area. After some communication and thought, I decided to give Dr Darrow a try. My initial consultation/examination with Dr Darrow was something that my "current" doctors did NOT do. After reviewing my records, he pressed upon, prodded areas of my lower back area simultaneously asking me if there was any pain. He also asked me to walk up and down the hallway while he was observing my walk. His observation was that surgery was NOT necessary and that my problems lie within the ligaments and tendons that essentially are connecting my back with my hip. The doctor mentioned that it is probable that the arthritic disc is a result of the ligaments (in my case primarily the iliolumbar ligament) being damaged to the point where it allows too much movement between discs, creating the arthritic condition. In other words, the damaged disc was a symptom of something else. He also mentioned, that he believes that I am a candidate for PRP injections. I agreed and that day started treatment. My initial DD told me that I would probably need multiple injections which I was preparing myself for but it in all honesty took more than I thought but ultimately the injections worked. I went from looking forward to back surgery, (aka, "failed back surgery?"), to being able to do the day to day things again essentially pain free. I still have symptoms periodically but they are just mild tingling and an occasional twinge. I have had the procedures performed on me by both Dr Darrow and Dr Grove. For the record, Dr Grove's exam procedures are essentially the same as Dr Darrow's, hands on and ears open. I am quite happy with my results and if the mild tingling and occasional twinge don't improve anymore, I will be back to address it. I am doing just fine now, just want to be symptom free. 18 months ago I saw DrDarrow on the advice of a friend who'd had success with his treatments. My issue was severe knee pain where I could hardly walk around. I was reluctant to get out of bed in the morning just fearing the pain. MRIs revealed tears, fluid and spurs. My doctor suggested replacement. Darrow injected me for three separate visits, after each visit the pain subsided to the level that after the third treatment I felt comfortable again walking. Now after 18 months there is no pain - an occasional discomfort that goes away after a few doses of Glucosamean. I have referred 3 or 4 others to him and every one have said that he helped them tremendously. After trying many treatments for low-back pain, this doctor recommended an expensive prolotherapy treatment not covered by insurance. Three visits totaling $1500. Absolutely nothing changed.
